Some people don't really want to be helped, you know. They want the help; they need the attention; they enjoy the comfort. I felt that Marilyn was this way. She was terribly sweet: I liked her. But Marilyn couldn't do anything--I mean, anything--without the approval or the consent of this persistent group that was around her. I had a group, too, you know, but they were moving children and dogs and luggage and getting me from one sound stage to another. Marilyn's people were analyzing her; berating her; grooming her. I really think she'd be with us today if she had allowed herself some time alone to learn how to open a can or deal with loneliness or just talk to someone for the sake of conversation.
She over-analyzed a life she never had the chance to live.

Certaines personnes ne veulent pas vraiment être aidées, vous savez. Ils veulent de l'aide ; ils ont besoin d'attention ; ils apprécient le confort. Je sentais que Marilyn était comme ça. Elle était terriblement gentille : je l'aimais bien. Mais Marilyn ne pouvait rien faire – je veux dire, rien – sans l'approbation ou le consentement de ce groupe persistant qui l'entourait. J'avais aussi un groupe, vous savez, mais ils déplaçaient des enfants, des chiens et des bagages et me faisaient passer d'une scène sonore à une autre. Les gens de Marilyn l'analysaient ; la réprimander; la toiletter. Je pense vraiment qu'elle serait avec nous aujourd'hui si elle s'était accordée du temps seule pour apprendre à ouvrir une boîte de conserve, à gérer la solitude ou simplement à parler à quelqu'un pour le plaisir de converser.
Elle a sur-analysé une vie qu’elle n’a jamais eu la chance de vivre.
