Norma Jeane visits Huntington, Virginia

Witnesses say Monroe visited the Tri-State

By BOB WITHERS - The Herald-Dispatch

HUNTINGTON - You may remember her as Marilyn Monroe, the buxom beauty who took the movie crowd by storm back in the '50s.
You may also recall that she took part in several revolving-door marriages with men such as baseball star Joe DiMaggio and playwright Arthur Miller -- and had a fling with President John F. Kennedy. You also may know that she is said to have committed suicide in August 1962, at age 36.
But did you know that she had family ties to Huntington -- and that two people say they once saw her visiting here?
It appears that she did, back when she was Norma Jeane Mortensen -- or Norma Jeane Baker, as she also was known.
Thanks to some research by city resident Joe Platania and verification by a former city man and two local women who knew Monroe's stepsister, the little-known encounter has come to light.

Norma Jeane was born in the charity ward of Los Angeles General Hospital on June 1, 1926. She was the daughter of Gladys Pearl Monroe Baker Mortensen.
Norma Jeane lived a deprived childhood, being shunted back and forth between an orphanage and several neighbors while her mother worked as a film cutter at Columbia Studios and ended up being treated for depression in a mental hospital.
Grace McKee, a close friend of Gladys Mortensen, eventually was named Norma Jeane's legal guardian. She subsequently married Erwin "Doc" Goddard, a research engineer for Adel Precision Products Corp. who had three children of his own from a previous marriage.
Norma Jeane lived with Grace Goddard's own mother for a while, but when she was about 13, she finally moved in with the Goddards -- where she became good friends with Doc's daughter, Eleanor "Bebe" Goddard, who was about her age.
"She was nicknamed 'Normi' by her new sister," Adela Gregory and Milo Speriglio wrote in their biography titled "Crypt 33: The Saga of Marilyn Monroe -- The Final Word." "They shared the same room, clothes and shoe size."

In early 1942 when Norma Jeane was 15, Doc Goddard was transferred to Adel's plant at 1444 Washington Ave. in Huntington, where he became plant superintendent, according to Polk's City Directory. But Gregory and Speriglio, two of many biographers of the beauty queen, wrote that Goddard did not want to bring Norma Jeane here with the rest of the family. So his wife arranged to have her introduced to James Dougherty, a son of their neighbors and longtime friends. The youngsters were married 18 days after her 16th birthday; the marriage would last a little over four years.
In 1944, Dougherty enlisted in the U.S. Merchant Marine and eventually was shipped overseas. His young wife became quite lonely, and it was during this period that local residents say she visited Huntington.

Nelson Cohen of La Jolla, Calif., grew up in Huntington and says he saw Norma Jeane here during the summer of 1943 or 1944. He says the encounters may have been at the Goddard home, 322 Wilson Court, but more than likely they took place at one of the places where the Huntington High School crowd hung out -- such as Maully's South Side Confectionery at 915 8th St. or South Side Confectionery at 803 8th St.
"It was very brief, no long-term relationship," says Cohen, who was married to Goddard briefly in 1950-51. "She didn't look like Marilyn Monroe at the time, I can tell you that. She was pleasant enough, perfectly normal."

The elder Goddards returned to California in late 1944 or early 1945, but Eleanor stayed here to finish her education.
It was in 1945 that city resident Diane DePree Miller says she saw Norma Jeane during a visit with Eleanor when she lived with Thomas and Mary Ptomey at 702 12th Ave. "She was an ordinary-looking girl, with light brown hair," Miller says. "She was very shy and kept to herself. When I saw her, she was laying across a bed."

After Eleanor Goddard graduated from Huntington High School in the spring of 1945, she stayed in Huntington for six years, working in sales at the Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Co.
Another city resident, Virginia Linsenmeyer, remembers going with Goddard and several other friends to four or five movies in which Goddard's refashioned stepsister -- now called Marilyn Monroe -- had bit parts and would point her out when she appeared on the screen.
"It was either at the Roxie or the Rialto," Linsenmeyer recalls. " 'Oh, there she is,' she would say."
"Eleanor had a high school picture of her on her piano," Linsenmeyer says. "She was always talking about her."

Further details are lacking -- and likely to remain so. Eleanor Goddard died in California on Feb. 11, 2000, at the age of 73.

Par BOB WITHERS - The Herald-Dispatch HUNTINGTON -

The Saga of Marilyn Monroe -- The Final Word".
