Janvier 1957 - La lune de miel de Marilyn et Arthur en Jamaïque

Marilyn Monroe et Arthur Miller passent leur lune de miel en Jamaïque du 3 au 17 janvier 1957; ils passent leur séjour avec un autre couple, Morton Miller (le cousin d'Arthur) et sa femme Florence.

Ils séjournent à Ocho Rios qui se situe dans la paroisse de Saint Ann (région surnommée "le jardin botanique de l'île" par sa beauté et sa diversité florale).
Ils logent dans la villa "Moot Point" appartenant à une aristocrate anglaise, lady Pamela Bird, qui se trouve à 12 mètres de la mer. D'un étage bleu pâle, la villa a trois chambres, trois salles de bain, un immense salon, d'une terrasse surplombant la mer et d'un grand jardin. Lady Bird dispose de cinq employés pour l'entretenir, qui se considèrent chanceux de pouvoir servir le couple star: en exemple, l'un des employés, Owen, refuse de prendre sa journée de repos pour être présent à chaque instant.
Elle constitue alors l'une des cinq villas d'Hermosa Beach, alors en plein développement (aujourd'hui appelé Hermosa Cove, les villas sont devenues des complexes hôteliers de luxe). Le manoir des voisins "Cotton Wood" est celui de Sir Bernard et Lady Docker, et la villa située à l'Est "Lime Tree House" est celle de Terry Marsteller.

Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller spend their honeymoon in Jamaica from January 3, 1957 to January 17, 1957; they spend their stay with another couple, Morton Miller (Arthur's cousin) and his wife Florence.

They stay in Ocho Rios which is located in the parish of Saint Ann (region nicknamed "the Garden Parish of Jamaica" for its beauty and its floral diversity).
They stay at the "Moot Point" villa, belonging to an English aristocrat, Lady Pamela Bird, which is at 40 feet from the sea. A pale blue one-story, the villa has three bedrooms, three baths, a huge drawing room, a terrace overhanging the sea and a big garden. Lady Bird has five employees to maintain it, who consider themselves lucky to be able to serve the star couple: for example, one of the employees, Owen, refuses to take his day off to be present every time.
It is one of the five villas of Hermosa Beach, then in full development (now called Hermosa Cove, the villas have become luxury resorts). The neighboring mansion "Cotton Wood" belongs to Sir Bernard and Lady Docker and the villa at the East "Lime Tree House" is owned by Terry Marsteller.

- Saint Ann ; Ocho Rios -

Le 4 janvier, Arthur Miller se rend dans la baie de Saint Ann pour obtenir son permis de conduire jamaïcain, avec Lord Ronald Graham et sa femme (qui louent la villa aux Miller; Ronald Graham est agent immobilier et voisin de la villa). Quand à Marilyn, elle se détend et va nager dans la mer carribéenne quand le temps s'y prête car la météo est changeante, il y a notamment beaucoup de vent. Marilyn aimerait faire du vélo et un peu de plongée, les reporters du journal Daily Gleaner lui ont offert masque et tuba: elle leur est apparue sans maquillage et vêtue d'un petit short blanc et d'un top d'été quand ils sont venus lui offrir à la villa. Elle leur fait part de son enthousiasme en découvrant les sublimes couleurs changeantes de la mer. Arthur Miller leur dit qu'ils passeront les prochains jours à dormir.
En réalité, Marilyn sort peu car elle évite de se mettre au soleil car sa peau devient rose et brillante (comme le rapporte le journal Daytona Beach), il lui arrive surtout d'aller nager et de s'allonger dans le sable.
Le couple déclare aussi adorer la nourriture jamaïcaine: le fruit d'arbre à pain, le corrosol, les ignames et le homard; et ils sortent de temps en temps pour visiter quelques lieux, Arthur s'intéressant à l'agriculture locale et à l'histoire de l'île.

Le 11 janvier, ils se rendent à l'hôtel Jamaica Inn, où Arthur Miller joue au tennis avec son cousin Morton pendant que Marilyn les regarde. Le soir, ils sont allés dîner chez Jonas Reiner, dans sa résidence "High Hope" située dans la baie de Saint Ann.
Le 12 janvier, ils donnent une interview aux reporters du Daily Gleaner et le soir, ils sortent écouter de la musique locale.
En fait, le couple ne planifie rien et font des "activités spontanées" comme dit Arthur.

Marilyn, Arthur et son cousin Morton et sa femme Florence se rendent aussi parfois dîner à l'hôtel Jamaica Inn à Ochos Rios, au nord de la côte, où le barman sert à Marilyn un punch au rhum.

Arthur Miller déclare dans la presse locale (le Jamaica Gleaner) qu'il est en train d'écrire une pièce de théâtre pour sa femme, qui parlera de "la vie contemporaine".
Le couple rapporte aussi qu'ils sont à la recherche d'une maison à louer, exprimant l'intérêt d'acheter une propriété au nord de l'île. Ils expriment aussi l'envie de revenir passer des vacances (propos recueillis le 12 janvier par le Daily Gleaner), Marilyn racontant aux journalistes qu'il s'agit "d'une vraie lune de miel" et Arthur ajoutant que "personne ne nous embête ici. C'est merveilleux. C'est la raison pour laquelle nous reviendrons. L'intimité."

On January 4, Arthur Miller goes to Saint Ann's Bay to get his Jamaican driver's license, with Lord Ronald and Lady Graham (who rent the villa to the Millers; Ronald Graham is realtor and neighbor of the villa). As for Marilyn, she relaxes and goes swimming in the Caribbean Sea when the weather is right because the weather is changeable, there is particularly a lot of wind. Marilyn would like to cycle and do some diving, the reporters of The Daily Gleaner Journal offers her a mask and snorkel: she appeared to them without makeup and wearing little white shorts and a summer top when they came to give her at the villa. She shares with them her enthusiasm by discovering the sublime changing colors of the sea. Arthur Miller tells them that they will spend the next few days sleeping. In fact, Marilyn doesn't go out much because she avoids going in the sun because her skin becomes pink and brilliant (as reported in the Daytona Beach newspaper), she sometimes mostly goes swimming and lying in the sand.
The couple also say they love the jamaican food: the breadfruit, the soursop, yams and lobster; and they go out sometime to visit a few places, Arthur taking an interest in the local agriculture and the history of the island.

On January 11, they go to the Jamaica Inn hotel, where Arthur Miller plays tennis with his cousin Morton while Marilyn watches them. In the evening, they went to dine at Jonas Reiner's residence "High Hope" located in the bay of Saint Ann.
On January 12, they give an interview to the Daily Gleaner reporters and in the evening, they go out to listen native music.
In fact, the couple don't plan anything and do "spontaneous activities" as Arthur says.

Marilyn, Arthur and his cousin Morton and his wife Florence also sometimes go to dinner at the Jamaica Inn hotel in Ochos Rios, north of the coast, where the barman serves Marilyn a rum punch.

Arthur Miller declares in the local press (the Jamaica Gleaner) that he is in the process of writing a play for his wife which would be about “contemporary life.” The couple tells to reporters they are looking for a house to rent and express interest in buying property on the island’s north coast. They also express the desire to come back for a vacation (comments collected on January 12 by the Daily Gleaner), Marilyn telling to reporters that this is "really a honeymoon" and Arthur added that "no one has bothered us. It's wonderful. That's why we will come back here. The privacy."
