Dior vient de dévoiler le nouveau spot du parfum J'adore, tourné à la galerie des Glaces, au château de Versailles, par Jean-Jacques Annaud. Au son de Heavy Cross de Gossip, l'égérie Charlize Theron se prépare à défiler pour la marque. Sur son chemin, elle croise Grace Kelly, Marlene Dietrich et Marilyn Monroe, habillées par la maison. Cette fausse Marilyn -pourtant fan d'un certain Numéro 5, selon ses dires- s'empare du parfum avec enthousiasme.

  Joe DiMaggio et Lefty O'Doul ont quitté Tokyo et sont arrivés à Kawana dans la matinée du vendredi 05 février; et Marilyn Monroe, accompagnée de la critique de cinéma japonaise Kazuko Komori (cf photo ci-contre), connue sous le nom de "la Tante de Komori" et qui connait bien le milieu Hollywoodien, ont quitté Tokyo en train et sont arrivées à Kawana plus tard dans la journée.
A peine arrivée à l'hôtel de Kawana, Marilyn va rester au lit, car elle souffre toujours de maux de ventre. Joe DiMaggio dit à la presse que son état de santé est du à l'excitation du voyage et à des tensions nerveuses. Kazuko Komori passera aussi la nuit dans le même hôtel.

Pour le dîner, Marilyn a commandé un steak d'agneau fin et sec, de la salade et du thé au citron sucré.
Les jours suivants, elle se fera notamment livrer, par le service en chambre, une omelette de riz: elle aime tellement ce plat, qu'elle en commandera à deux reprises pendant son séjour. L'omelette de riz est toujours aujourd'hui proposé à la carte de menu du restaurant.

Kawana se situe sur la péninsule d'Izu, dans la ville d'Ito, et appartient à la préfecture de Shizuoka.
Ils logent tous au grand complexe hôtelier luxueux de Kawana, entouré d'un immense terrain de golf et où se trouve une grande piscine. Marilyn, Joe et Lefty resteront trois jours à Kawana, passant les deux nuits à l'hôtel Kawana; Marilyn et Joe sont dans la chambre n°316.
Il semble qu'ils aient tous passé le week-end à se reposer et à profiter du cadre de vie: ils ont joué au billard, se sont détendus dans les fauteuils rembourés devant les cheminées Art Déco de l'hôtel, ont dîné dans le restaurant de l'hôtel aux poutres apparentes sous les plafonds, et ont pu ainsi bénéficier d'un peu d'intimité, loin de la foule et de l'agitation médiatique qui les secoue depuis leur arrivée au Japon.

Joe Di Maggio and Lefty O'Doul left Tokyo and arrived in Kawana on the morning of Friday February 5; and Marilyn Monroe, accompanied by Japanese film critic Kazuko Komori (see photo), known as "Komori's Aunt" and who knows the Hollywood scene well, left Tokyo by train and arrived in Kawana later in the day.
Barely arriving at Kawana's hotel, Marilyn goes to stay in bed, because she still suffers from stomach aches. Joe DiMaggio told the press that her state of health was due to the excitement of the trip and nervous tension. Kazuko Komori will also spend the night in the same hotel.

For dinner, Marilyn ordered a thin, dry lamb steak, salad and sweet lemon tea. The following days, she will have a rice omelet delivered by room service: she likes this dish so much that she will order it twice during her stay. The rice omelette is still offered on the restaurant's menu today.

Kawana is located on the Izu Peninsula, Ito City, and belongs to Shizuoka Prefecture.
They all stay at the large luxurious Kawana hotel, surrounded by a huge golf course and where there is a large swimming pool. Marilyn, Joe and Lefty will stay in Kawana for three days, spending both nights at the Kawana Hotel; Marilyn and Joe are in the room n°316.
It seems that they all spent the weekend relaxing and enjoying the surroundings: they played billiards, relaxed in the upholstered armchairs in front of the hotel's Art Deco fireplaces, dined in the hotel restaurant with exposed beams under the ceilings, and were thus able to benefit from a little privacy, far from the crowds and the media agitation that has shaken them since their arrival in Japan.

Joe DiMaggio et Lefty O'Doul profitent de l'immense terrain de golf attenant à l'hôtel pour aller jouer au golf, qui est l'une de leur grande passion, avec M. Takeda, président de Hochi Shimbun, et M. Takashi Shoriki du Oji Paper, le fils aîné de M. Matsutarô Yomiuri Shôriki.
Mais pas Marilyn Monroe qui est gênée dans ses mouvements par son pouce cassé (elle porte toujours son attelle). Par ailleurs, elle se sent toujours fatiguée et malade: en plus de ses douleurs abdominales et de la fatigue et du stress cumulés, les diverses injections de vaccins pour sa prochaine tournée en Corée nuisent à son rétablissement et la rendent nauséeuse et léthargique. Elle serait ainsi donc restée à l'hôtel pour se reposer.
Après le dîner, Joe et Lefty jouent au billard.

Jean O'Doul, la femme de Lefty O'Doul a pris l'avion de San Francisco le 04 février en destination d'Honolulu, Hawaï, où elle est arrivée la nuit du 04 février. Elle prend ensuite un avion de la Pan Am pour venir au Japon: elle arrive à Tokyo en fin d'après-midi (vers 17h00). Elle passe la nuit à l'hôtel Imperial de Tokyo.
A Honolulu, elle a téléphoné à un animateur radio, Joe Rose, pour lui confirmer que sa venue au Japon est dans le but d'accompagner Marilyn pour sa tournée en Corée et dont l'organisation se précise: les dates sont du 16 au 19 février, avec au moins deux shows par jour; il est déjà prévu que Marilyn chante aux soldats le titre "Somebody Loves Me", que le pianiste qui l'accompagnera sera le Caporal Al Guastefeste, âgé de 21 ans et originaire de Long Island, avec la troupe de musiciens "Anything Goes".

In Honolulu, she called a radio presenter, Joe Rose, to confirm that her coming to Japan is to accompany Marilyn for her tour in Korea and whose organization is becoming clearer: the dates are from the 16th to the 19th February, with at least two shows per day; It is already planned that Marilyn will sing to the soldiers the title "Somebody Loves Me", that the pianist who will accompany her will be Corporal Al Guastefeste, aged 21 and originally from Long Island, with the troupe of musicians "Anything Goes".

Puis ils partent en taxi pour se rendre dans un petit village de pêcheurs, pour lequel Joe porte un grand intérêt: il était lui-même fils de pêcheur et aurait du suivre les traces de son père si sa mère ne l'avait pas encouragé à poursuivre ses efforts dans le sport du base-ball. Marilyn et Joe traversent le village à pied, se rendent sur le petit port, et se prêtent au jeu des poses photographiques avec les habitants. Le photographe David Cicero, envoyé par le magazine militaire américain Stars and Stripes, les prend en photos, avec d'autres photographes japonais (comme Reiko Iwashita).
Au début de leur promenade, le couple bénéficie d'une certaine tranquilité et intimité. Mais au fur et à mesure de leur visite, ils rencontrent quelques locaux et notamment un jeune garçon de 10 ans qui reconnaît Joe DiMaggio, qui est une idole du base-ball au Japon. Dans cet endroit reculé du Japon, le cinéma n'est pas un produit culturel connu des habitants, tandis que le base-ball a séduit toute la jeune génération du pays. C'est la première fois depuis leur arrivée que Joe DiMaggio passe en premier plan en redevenant la star. Rapidement, plusieurs personnes du village commencent à se regrouper autour d'eux et à les suivre.
On raconte qu'ils ont invité une vieille dame du village à l'hôtel Kawana.

At the start of their walk, the couple enjoys a certain tranquility and privacy. But as their visit progresses, they meet a few locals, including a 10-year-old boy who recognizes Joe DiMaggio, who is a baseball idol in Japan. In this remote part of Japan, cinema is not a cultural product known to the inhabitants, while baseball has seduced the entire young generation of the country. This is the first time since their arrival that Joe DiMaggio has come to the fore by becoming the star again. Quickly, several people from the village begin to gather around them and follow them.
It is said that they invited an old lady from the village to the Kawana Hotel.

Après avoir passé le week-end dans la station de golf du complexe hôtelier de la ville de Kawana, Marilyn Monroe et Joe DiMaggio reviennent à Tokyo: soit ils ont pris l'avion pour Tokyo l'après-midi du dimanche 07 février, soit le matin du lundi 08 février (il semble plus probable qu'ils soient arrivés le dimanche). Ils retournent à l'hôtel Imperial, où ils ont logé à leur arrivée au Japon. Le couple O'Doul (Lefty et sa femme Jean) est déjà sur place.
Dans la matinée: il est possible que ce soit ce matin là que Marilyn ait acheté son collier de perles Matoba à la bijouterie à côté de l'hôtel.

After spending the weekend in the golf resort of the hotel complex in the city of Kawana, Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio return to Tokyo: either they took the plane to Tokyo on the afternoon of Sunday February 7, or on the morning of Monday February 8 (it seems more likely that they arrived on Sunday). Ils sont arrivés à 17h28 à Itami, une base aérienne américaine d'Osaka (qui est aujourd'hui l'aéroport international d'Osaka).
Ils sont une dizaine de personnes à voyager: Marilyn, Joe, le couple O'Doul, Bobby Brown, des interprètes et les organisateurs japonais. Ils font une courte pause dans l'aéroport d'Itami où ils sont chaudement accueillis dans un salon d'attente privé où on leur remet des bouquets de fleurs et on leur sert une tasse de thé, en attendant l'heure du prochain avion qu'ils doivent prendre pour aller à Fukuoka. Le journal japonais The Yomiuri Shimbun publie un article le 09 février 1954 sur l'arrivée du couple à Itami en disant que "Le typhon Monroe a balayé l'aéroport d'Itami."

There are around ten people traveling: Marilyn, Joe, the O'Doul couple, Bobby Brown, interpreters and the Japanese organizers. They take a short break in Itami airport where they are warmly welcomed in a private waiting lounge where they are given bouquets of flowers and served a cup of tea, while waiting for the time of the next plane they have to take to go to Fukuoka. The Japanese newspaper The Yomiuri Shimbun published an article on February 9, 1954 about the couple's arrival in Itami saying that "The Monroe Typhoon swept through Itami Airport."

Ils prennent l'avion et arrivent à 19h35 à la base aérienne d'Itazuke (aujourd'hui l'aéroport de Fukuoka). Sur le tarmac de l'aéroport, ils font face à une large foule composée de fans, de spectateurs et de journalistes et sont malmenés. Il semble qu'ils aient du -encore- pu s'échapper de l'avion en passant par la soute des bagages.

Ils sont emmenés à l'hôtel international Kokusai (renommé le Nikkatsu et aujourd'hui hôtel Shiroyama), à côté de Fukuoka Nikkatsu le long de la rivière Naka dans le quartier Nakasu de la ville d'Hakata (Nakasu est une petite île au milieu de la ville de Fukuoka entourée par les rivières Nakagawa à l'ouest et Hakatagawa à l'est; Fukuoka est une ville qui se trouve sur l'île de Kyūshū).
Une foule d'une centaine de personnes (dont de nombreuses adolescentes étudiantes) sont regroupés devant l'hôtel et bloquent l'entrée. Des policiers japonais interviennent pour sécuriser les lieux et d'ouvrir un passage pour permettre à la voiture de Marilyn et Joe d'atteindre l'entrée.
Bobby Brown est dans une chambre au 3ème étage et Marilyn et Joe occupent d'abord une suite située au 2ème étage mais des néons clignotent sans interruption et Marilyn se sentant toujours nauséeuse (et elle a toujours eu aussi un sommeil difficile, elle a besoin d'une pièce plongée totalement dans le noir), alors le couple est déplacé: ils occupent la chambre 313 et passeront 3 nuits dans cet hôtel.

They are driven to the Kokusai International Hotel (renamed the Nikkatsu and now Shiroyama Hotel), next to Fukuoka Nikkatsu along the Naka River in the Nakasu district of Hakata City (Nakasu is a small island in the middle of the city of Fukuoka surrounded by the Nakagawa rivers to the west and Hakatagawa rivers to the east; Fukuoka is a city located on the Kyūshū island).
A crowd of around a hundred people (including many teenage girls students) gathered in front of the hotel and blocked the entrance. Japanese police intervene to secure the scene and open a passage to allow Marilyn and Joe's car to reach the entrance.
Bobby Brown is in a room on the 3rd floor and Marilyn and Joe initially occupy a suite on the 2nd floor but neon lights are flashing non-stop and Marilyn still feels nauseous (and she has always had trouble sleeping too, she needs a bedroom completely dark), then the couple is moved: they occupy room 313 and will spend 3 nights in this hotel.

Joe DiMaggio et Lefty O'Doul sont allés au stade de baseball de Kashii pour donner des entraînements à l'équipe des Shochiku Robins. Joe dit à un joueur: "Si vous frappez bien la balle, votre balle s'envolera vers la lune." Ils y ont passé plus de temps que prévu et ont pris du retard: Marilyn et Joe doivent donner une conférence de presse à 15h00 à l'hôtel qui est donc décalée de 2 heures.
Joe DiMaggio a donné des consignes aux reporters: "Personne ne parle à ma femme jusqu'à mon retour."

They spent more time there than expected and fell behind schedule: Marilyn and Joe had to give a press conference at 3:00 p.m. at the hotel which was therefore delayed by 2 hours.
Joe DiMaggio gives instructions to reporters: "Nobody talks to my wife until I get back."

  Lasse d'attendre que la conférence de presse commence, un journaliste japonais, Masaharu -Shoji- Kawamura, 26 ans, qui représente la presse Yukan Fukunichi, accompagné de trois photographes, se rendent à l'hôtel international Kokusai dans l'espoir de pouvoir interviewer Marilyn. Le patron de Kawamura lui a demandé d'apporter "un scoop" sur Marilyn. Le journaliste va simplement demandé le numéro de la chambre occupée par Marilyn (n°313) et va monter à l'étage pour toquer à la porte. C'est Marilyn Monroe en personne qui lui ouvre, avec un large sourire aux lèvres. Le journaliste, qui parle anglais, demande à Marilyn si elle accepterait une brève interview et d'être prise en photos. A sa grande surprise, Marilyn accepte en répondant "Bien sûr, je voudrais rendre hommage aux médias locaux et à mes fans." et les invite dans sa suite et l'interview se déroule par l'intermédiaire d'un interprète, le journaliste étant bien trop anxieux pour parler en anglais. Interrogée sur sa blessure au pouce, Marilyn plaisante: "J'ai attrapé une ampoule à force de signer trop d'autographes".
Les japonais, qui sont désormais au courant que Marilyn séjourne à l'hôtel international Kokusai ont commencé à se rassembler autour de l'hôtel dès le matin. L'après-midi, avec la foule de fans (environ 500) qui entoure l'hôtel, Marilyn Monroe apparaît à la fenêtre du deuxième étage vers 16h et disperse des pétales d'œillets tout en saluant la foule et envoie des baisers aux fans.
Elle est ainsi photographiée par les reporters du Fukunichi, de dos, accroupie à la fenêtre en train de saluer la foule. L'autre photographe se tient en équilibre sur le rebord pour la photographier de face, en se penchant à la fenêtre.
L'équipe du Fukunichi obtient alors leur scoop, et le numéro suivant présentait une histoire illustrée intitulée "La bombe H Monroe est tombée à Hakata".
Malheureusement, cet engouement médiatique autour de Marilyn (et son initiative d'avoir donné une interview improvisée) ayant eu lieu pendant son absence, ne plaît pas du tout à Joe DiMaggio qui fait annuler la conférence de presse dès son retour à l'hôtel (donc sans doute après 17h).

Tired of waiting for the press conference to begin, a Japanese journalist, Masaharu -Shoji- Kawamura, 26, who represents the Yukan Fukunichi press, accompanied by three photographers, go to the Kokusai International Hotel in the hope of being able to interview Marilyn. Kawamura's boss asked him to bring "a scoop" on Marilyn. The journalist will simply ask for the number of the room occupied by Marilyn (n°313) and will go upstairs to knock on the door. It's Marilyn Monroe herself who opens the door, with a big smile on her face. The journalist, who speaks English, asks Marilyn if she would agree to a brief interview and to have photos taken. To his great surprise, Marilyn accepts by responding "Of course, I would like to pay my respects to the local media and my fans" and invites them to her suite and the interview takes place through an interpreter, the journalist being far too anxious to speak in English. When asked about her thumb injury, Marilyn jokes: “It’s a blister from signing too many autograph.”
The Japanese, who are now aware that Marilyn is staying at the Kokusai International Hotel, begin to gather around the hotel in the morning. In the afternoon, with the crowd of fans (about 500) surrounding the hotel, Marilyn Monroe appears at the second floor window around 4 p.m. and scatters carnation petals while greeting the crowd and blowing kisses to the fans.
She is thus photographed by the Fukunichi reporters, from behind, crouching at the window greeting the crowd. The other photographer balances on the ledge to photograph her from the front, leaning out of the window.
The Fukunichi team then got their scoop, and the next issue featured an illustrated story titled "Marilyn the H-Bomb hits Hakata".
Unfortunately, this media craze around Marilyn (and her initiative to have given an impromptu interview) having taken place during his absence, did not please Joe DiMaggio at all who has the press conference canceled as soon as he goes back to the hotel (so probably after 5 p.m.).

Marilyn consomme la soupe de gratin à l'oignon.

Marilyn and Joe dine in a private room at the French restaurant Royal Nakasu Honten (this restaurant opened in 1953. Marilyn and Joe will dine there every evening during their stay in Fukuoka; the restaurant is now called Hananoki and has been moved, located today in Ohori Park, where a "Monroe Room" is recreated identical to the one where Marilyn and Joe ate with a photograph of Marilyn and Joe at the table in the restaurant). Marilyn eats the onion gratin soup.

Ils ont été photographié -avec Lefty o'Doul- par un journaliste de Nishinippon Shimbun, mais celui-ci sera vite expulsé (on ne connait qu'une seule photographie, aujourd'hui exposé dans le restaurant Hananoki - cf ci-contre). Ils ont dû se faufiler par la sortie arrière pour éviter la cohue des fans qui tentaient de les apercevoir.

They were photographed - with Lefty o'Doul - by a journalist from Nishinippon Shimbun, but he was quickly expelled (we only know only one photograph, today exhibited in the Hananoki restaurant). They had to sneak through the back exit to avoid the crush of fans trying to catch a glimpse of them.

A 19h00, Marilyn Monroe et Joe DiMaggio sont invités pour une "soirée base-ball" à l'American Center du Consulat Américain (baptisé la "Maison Blanche de Fukuoka") à Tenjin, dans la ville de Fukuoka, qui était essentiellement fréquenté par les civils américains (les épouses des forces militaires stationnés dans la région).
Joe DiMaggio et Lefty O'Doul prononcent un discours (des conseils et instructions) devant une centaine de personnes, dont des joueurs de Shochiku et de JNR Swallows, avec aussi la projection de films d'actualités autour du base-ball des World Series et d'autres sports.
L'opérateur du projecteur Akira Ogata se souvient de Marilyn Monroe, assise au fond de la salle à côté du projecteur, qui semblait s'ennuyait. Après la représentation, Ogata a fait la queue pour lui serrer la main et a fouillé ses poches à la recherche d'un morceau de papier pour obtenir un autographe, mais tout ce qu'il avait sur lui, c'était sa carte de bus qu'elle a ainsi signée. L'American Center affiche désormais fièrement une photographie de Marilyn prise lors de sa visite.
Des fans se sont aussi rassemblés devant le centre américain.

At 7:00 p.m., Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio are invited or a "baseball evening" at the American Center of the US Consulate (called the "Fukuoka White House") in Tenjin, in the city of Fukuoka, which was mainly frequented by American civilians (the spouses of military forces stationed in the region).
Joe DiMaggio and Lefty O'Doul give a speech (advices and instructions) in front of a hundred people, including players from Shochiku and JNR Swallows, with also the screening of newsreels around World Series baseball and other sports.
Projector operator Akira Ogata remembers Marilyn Monroe, sitting at the back of the room next to the projector, looking bored. After the performance, Ogata waited in line to shake her hand and searched in his pockets for a piece of paper to get an autograph, but all he had on him was his bus pass which she thus signed. The American Center now proudly displays a photograph of Marilyn taken during her visit.
Fans also gathered in front of the American Center.

Le matin, Marilyn lave ses sous-vêtements dans le lavabo de l'hôtel Royal; c'est un employé de l'hôtel, Yasuo Yamagata, qui le racontera dans une interview, précisant que "C'est la première fois que je rencontre une cliente qui ne salit pas la chambre. Elle ne manque jamais de vider les cendriers et tous les bouts de papier dans la corbeille. Contrairement aux actrices japonaises, elle n’est pas snob."
Après le départ de Marilyn, des rumeurs ont circulé selon lesquelles le personnel de l'hôtel aurait soigneusement fouillé la salle de bain et le lit de sa chambre à la recherche de cheveux et les aurait revendus au marché noir à un prix élevé !

Joe DiMaggio et Lefty O'Doul vont délivrer des enseignements à un cours de baseball.

  Marilyn visite la base aérienne d'Itazuke (devenue aujourd'hui l'aéroport de Fukuoka) qui comprend 3 unités installées par l'US Air Force: Itazuke AB, annexe administrative d'Itazuke (Kasuga) qui se trouvent sur le continent et la base aérienne de Brady (Camp Brady renommé par la suite Station Gannosu) situé à Saitosaki; l'ensemble forme la baie de Hakata.
Elle fait son arrivée assise dans une voiture décapotable qui défile dans les camps, reçoit un bouquet de fleurs, rencontre et discute avec le personnel (des employés et civils, famille des officiers, le groupe de la 315ème Division) et leur signe des autographes; elle se rend dans le réfectoire des aviateurs, le club des sous-officiers et le club des officiers Brady. Elle s'entretient avec des membres de l'équipe de basket-ball Brady, qui a récemment remporté le titre de la conférence Japan Southern. Une réception est organisée dans la base: Marilyn participe au brunch et tient même un discours.

 Marilyn visits Itazuke Air Base (now Fukuoka Airport) which includes 3 units installed by the US Air Force: Itazuke AB, administrative annex of Itazuke (Kasuga) which are located on the mainland and the Brady Air Base (Camp Brady later renamed Station Gannosu) located in Saitosaki; the whole forms Hakata Bay.
She arrives seated in a convertible car which parades through the camps, receives a bouquet of flowers, meets and talks with the staff (employees and civilians, officers' families, the 315th Division group) and signs their autographs. She goes to the airmen's dining hall, Non-Commissioned-Officer's club and the Brady Officer's Club. She talks with members of the Brady basketball team, which recently won the Japan Southern conference title. A reception is organized on the base: Marilyn attends the brunch and even gives a speech.

Le journaliste japonais Kawamura que Marilyn a recontré la veille à son hôtel, fait parti des reporters qui la suivent au Camp Brady. Kawamura a réussi à voir Marilyn et lui fait dédicacer une photo prise la veille à l'hôtel: cette photo dédicacée est un objet inestimable pour Kawamura qui l'encadrera dans son salon (cf photographie dédicacée ci-contre).

The Japanese journalist Kawamura, whom Marilyn met the day before at her hotel, is one of the reporters who follows her to Camp Brady. Kawamura managed to see Marilyn and have her autograph on a photo taken the day before at the hotel: this autographed photo is a priceless object for Kawamura who will frame it in his living room (see signed photograph opposite).

The image is from the personal files of Lotte Goslar, Monroe's friend and teacher, and is accompanied by a letter from the Goslar estate. Goslar was the director of the Pantomime Circus Dance Troupe and taught Monroe in the mid-1950s. They remained friends, and Goslar was one of the few people invited to Monroe's funeral. 9 by 11 1/2 inches.
