Venant de signer son premier contrat avec la 20th Century Fox (fin août 1946), le photographe Earl Theisen (qui travaillait pour le magazine américain Look) est engagé pour effectuer des photographies officielles de Marilyn Monroe pour le studio. C'est au cours de l'année 1947, dans un terrain de Los Angeles, qu'a lieu la séance. Aucune photographie ne sera cependant publiée. Elles ne seront dévoilées au public qu'en 2012, grâce à la fille du photographe, Ines, qui les a retrouvées et transmises à l'agence Getty.

Il s'agit de la première séance photos entre Earl Theisen et Marilyn; le photographe racontera:
"Je me souviens d'une séance que j'ai fait avec Marilyn, en 1946 ou 1947. Je suis allée la chercher chez elle où j'ai vu un gros livre sur l'anatomie humaine ouvert et tout annoté, et j'ai demandé: « Quelle était l'idée ? » et elle a dit: « J'étudie la structure osseuse du corps. Votre corps réagit en fonction de vos os. Le saviez-vous ? »
Tout ce qu'elle fait est calculé et se base sur une connaissance scientifique du corps humain, plus que quiconque, à l'exception des médecins. Elle est construite comme une machine à sexe. Elle peut l'allumer et l'éteindre. Je l'ai vue mettre la machine sexuelle en marche. Je vais me concentrer sur elle, me préparer à appuyer sur le déclencheur de l'appareil, puis en regardant dans le viseur, je peux réellement voir le sexe s'épanouir, comme s'il s'agissait d'une fleur. Si je suis pressé et que je veux déclencher trop vite, elle dira: « Earl, tu as appuyé trop vite. Ce ne sera pas bon. Continuons et finissons-en.» Vous voyez, il lui faut du temps pour créer ce truc sexuel. Et ne laissez personne vous dire que c'est dans ses hanches ou dans sa poitrine. Je vais vous dire où il se trouve. C'est dans sa tête. C'est là que c'est."

Having just signed her first contract with 20th Century Fox (at the end of August 1946), the photographer Earl Theisen (who worked for the American magazine Look) is hired to take official photographs of Marilyn Monroe for the studio. It is during the year 1947, in a field of Los Angeles, that the shooting takes place. However, no one og these photographs will be published. They will not be unveiled to the public until 2012, thanks to the photographer's daughter, Ines, who found them and sent them to the Getty agency.

This is the first photo shoot between Earl Theisen and Marilyn; the photographer will tell:
"I remember a series I shot with Marilyn, oh back in 1946 or 1947. I picked her up at her place and I saw a big book on the human anatomy open and all marked up, and I said, 'What was the idea,' and she said, 'I'm studying the bone structure of the body. Your body does what your bones do. Did you know that?'
Anything she does is calculated and is based on a more scientific knowledge of the human body than anybody has except doctors. She's built kind of like a sex machine. She can turn it on and off. I've seen her turn the sex machine into operation. I'll focus on her, get ready to shoot, and then looking in the finder, I can actually see the sex blossoming out, like it was a flower. If I'm in a hurry and want to shoot too quickly, she'll say, 'Earl, you shot it too quick. It won't be right. Let's do it over.' You see, it takes time for her to create this sex thing. And don't let anybody tell you it's in her hips or in her bosom. I'll tell you where it's located. It's in her mind. That's where it is."
