En parlant d'artistes... Nous en avons une vraie parmi nous, cela devient de plus en plus évident. Dans Bus Stop, Marilyn Monroe dissipe une fois pour toutes l'idée qu'elle serait uniquement une séductrice avec un corps parfait, des lèvres pulpeuses et des yeux bleus aguichants.

Ce film est un cadeau de Marilyn, et, mes amis, elle offre beaucoup: son corps, sa beauté, son talent. Elle est autant grande comédienne que petite chanteuse de bastringue. Son passage à l'Actors Studio de New York ne lui a apparemment pas fait de mal.

Il y a un an et demi, Marilyn Monroe quitta Hollywood pour l'est des Etats-Unis afin d'étudier sérieusement le métier d'acteur. Actuellement, elle revient sur les écrans... et tout le monde assiste au spectacle de la nouvelle Marilyn.
Dans Bus Stop, elle a un rôle formidable, qu'elle interprète avec un mélange d'humour et de souffrance, très touchant. Ce contraste est également le génie du film, qui passe d'un instant à l'autre de la drôlerie la plus délirante à la tendresse la plus fragile. D'une certaine façon, le réalisateur Joshua Logan est l'artisan de ce délicat équilibre.

Cramponnez-vous à vos sièges et attendez-vous à un spectacle renversant. Marilyn Monroe vient d'administrer dans Bus Stop la preuve qu'elle est une actrice. Le film et elle sont formidables !... Mr Logan a réussi dans ce film à lui faire faire autre chose que se tortiller, faire la moue, battre des cils et jouer la vamp. Il est parvenu à en faire le personnage de la pièce de William Inge, une fille quelconque, écervelée, avec l'accent des monts Orzak et de l'eczéma. 
Il a su faire d'lle uen gourde, une poupée de faux luxe découverte dans une boîte de Phoenix par un cow-boy assez mal dégrossi. Celui-ci la poursuit avec assiduité jusqu'à un arrêt d'autobus bloqué par la neige dans un coin sauvage de l'Arizona. Et, plus important encore, il réussit à allumer en elle la petite étincelle de dignité qui la transforme en jeune femme émouvante.
Heureusement pour elle, et conformément à la tradition qui veut que le travail mène au succès, elle donne à voir dans ce film un vrai talent d'actrice et non pas, comme auparavant, l'image d'une très jolie femme et d'un sex-symbol.

Jamais Marilyn ne fut plus belle et plus émouvante que dans cette comédie lui offrant l'un de ses plus beaux rôles. Une oeuvre admirable.

Tour à tour lumineuse, vulnérable et attendrissante, Marilyn trouva l'un de ses plus beaux rôles dans ce divertissement enlevé, qui oscille sans cesse, à l'image de sa star, entre gaieté et mélancolie.

Les Inrockuptibles (Hors Série - 2012 - par Clélia Cohen)
Prenant l'air en peignoir fleuri dans l'arrière-cour d'un saloon de Phoenix, c'est une toute nouvelle Marilyn qui apparaît au bout de quinze minutes de Bus Stop. Le film de Joshua Logan est celui de son "retour" à Hollywood après un bras de fer avec la Fox pour plus d'indépendance, un exil de quelques mois à New York, les cours de l'Actors Studio et la création de Marilyn Monroe Productions. Après les années d'ascension progressive, puis celles de l'explosion du mythe (Niagara, Les hommes préfèrent les blondes, etc), Bus Stop inaugure la troisième (et dernière) phase de la carrière de l'actrice blonde.
Une phase plus consciente, à la fois de son personnage et de sa biographie, que Les Désaxés prolongera. Marilyn a passé du temps à l'Actors Studio, et elle veut que ça se voie. Visage trop poudré, accent plouc, voix dissonante, costume rapiécé: au départ, on craint l'overdose. Mais Cherie, son personnage, explique que depuis qu'elle est gamine elle vit dans les films, montre une carte des Etats-Unis où elle a tracé une ligne qui va de son bled natal à Hollywood. On comprend donc vite que ce qui est beau dans Bus Stop, c'est précisèment que Marilyn y joue une paumée influencée par le mythe de la femme la plus connue au monde à ce moment-là. Et lorsqu'elle monte sur scène pour chanter That Old Black Magic d'une voix mal assurée, orchestrant elle-même les changements d'éclairage d'un coup de talon branlant, tentant de capter l'attention d'une horde de gueulards imbibés, on image qu'il y en eut plein, des pas si jeunes filles du Midwest, qui, à la fin des années 50, se trémoussaient mollement dans les bars à cowboys en rêvant à Marilyn. Mais cette distance réflexive ne marcherait pas sans sincérité, et l'actrice se dévoile aussi: son amie serveuse lui fait répéter les répliques et déplacements qu'elle doit mémoriser pour échapper au jeune cowboy qui a jeté son dévolu sur elle et veut l'emmener de force dans son ranch du Montana. Le moment venu, Cherie oublie ses répliques, s'embrouille, bégaie, comme la vraie Marilyn.
Le dernier acte du film, huis clos dans un relais routier entouré de neige, semble juste construit pour suivre les oscillations de sa conscience et de son corps (va-t-elle ou non se décider à suivre ce cowboy maladroit ?) dans un ballet erratique où, harrassée par le doute et le désir, elle se déplace avec peine, allongée sur le bar, enlaçant le juke-box avec une douleur indécise très physique. Sa décision enfin prise, elle se love dans le blouson qu'il lui tend, poussant des petits cris de biche, une manche après l'autre, presque au ralenti. Suspendre un moment aussi anodin (enfiler un blouson) si longtemps, tout en ayant la certitude qu'on ne la quittera pas des yeux et que ce sera le moment le plus gracieux du film, il n'y a que Marilyn pour se le permettre.

"C'est la chose la plus gentille qu'on m'ait jamais dite" avoue Cherie en pleurs à Bo, qui vient de lui murmurer qu'on l'aime "telle qu'elle est". Etait-il donc impossible d'aimer Marilyn telle qu'elle était ? Bus Stop n'est pas le premier rôle "dramatique" de l'actrice, mais ce rôle-là, elle l'a voulu. Après son passage remarqué à l'Actors Studio, et alors qu'on se moquait d'elle lorsqu'elle rêvait d'interpréter la Grouchenka des Frères Karamazov, Bus Stop, oeuvre a priori mineure dans sa filmographie, la consacra enfin aux yeux de la critique. "Marilyn est devenue une vraie actrice", entendit-on. A bien y regarder, pourtant, Marilyn n'a pas changé: certes, elle a modulé sa voix dans les tons suraigus; elle a donné à Cherie un fort accent provincial du Sud; elle a accepté de chanter terriblement faux et de se ridiculiser dans des vêtements vulgaires, elle qui avait un sens si aigu du style. Enne enfile de nouveau avec sérénité le costume de la blonde stupide qu'on lui a collé à la peau. Simplement, sa fragilité ne se cache plus derrière un masque: dans Bus Stop, les deux visages de Marilyn ne font plus qu'un. A travers Cherie, c'est l'actrice qui rêve: quand elle s'était tracée une voie royale vers les étoiles de Hollywood, n'aurait-elle pas mieux fait de s'égarer en chemin ? "Au-delà de l'amour, j'ai juste envie de sentir que celui que j'épouserai me respectera." Il est grand temps, cinquante ans après sa mort, de ne plus seulement aimer Marilyn.

lot 1257: MARILYN MONROE MEDICAL FILE
A medical file pertaining to cosmetic surgery performed on Marilyn Monroe. The file includes facial X-rays and doctors' notes from the office of Dr. Michael Gurdin, M.D., and the X-ray office of Drs. Conti and Steinberg. Dr. Gurdin's chart on Monroe begins on July 14, 1958, and lists the patient as Marilyn Miller with addresses in New York and Los Angeles. The chief complaint listed is "chin deformity" and goes on to give a medical history that begins in 1950 and ends in 1962. Listed are a 1956 bout of neutropenia in England; 1957 ectopic pregnancy in New York; 1950 cartilage implant in chin that the doctor observed had slowly begun to dissolve. Those with knowledge of the implant procedure have explained that this was done in association with a tip rhinoplasty, a procedure involving the tip of Monroe's nose only, not the bones. The last entry is dated June 7, 1962, and reports a fall at between 2 and 3 a.m. resulting in swelling and tenderness of the nose. Monroe was brought to Dr. Gurdin by her psychoanalyst, Dr. Ralph Greenson. Monroe was referred to Drs. Conti and Steinberg for X-rays. For her visit to the radiologists she was given the alias "Miss Joan Newman," and that name appears on the paperwork with Monroe's Brentwood home address. Six X-rays appear in the folder: a frontal facial bones X-ray; a smaller X-ray that is a composite of the right and left sides of her nasal bones; and four small dental X-rays into the roof of Monroe's mouth, looking upwards toward the nasal bones. The conclusion, written by Dr. Conti and dated June 7, 1962, is that there was no damage to Monroe's nose due to her fall. A more recent evaluation of the X-rays indicates a very minute hairline fracture of this bone. Monroe had turned 36 less than a week earlier. On June 8, the following day, Monroe was fired from the film Something's Got To Give (20th Century Fox).

lot 1247: MARILYN MONROE IN KOREA PHOTOGRAPHS AND COPYRIGHTS
An album of photographs taken by Daryl Mitchell, who served in the Korean War from August 1952 to August 1954 as "Senior Still Photographer" of the 101st Signal Battalion. Mitchell photographed visiting dignitaries, government visitors including Senator Richard Nixon, generals, and entertainers, namely Marilyn Monroe. Included in the album are approximately 93 vintage black and white photographs Mitchell took in Korea, including approximately nine of Nixon and eight of Monroe during her visit to Korea. The images of Monroe show her entertaining, signing autographs, getting out of a Jeep, getting food in line, and two of Monroe with the troops, wearing a flight jacket. Also accompanied by 10 color transparency slides of Monroe on stage entertaining the troops. Seven photographs of Monroe are 14 by 11 inches; one is 10 by 8 inches. Copyrights to these images will be transferred to the winning bidder.   An original photograph of Marilyn Monroe with Ron Stein of Hollywood Fancy Feather Co. Stein provided feathers for studio props and costumes. This image hung in his North Hollywood shop. Accompanied by two black and white images of Monroe and Jane Russell in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (20th Century, 1953), three publicity stills from other Monroe films, and four other images of Monroe.

Lot 1264: EARL MORAN (AMERICAN, 1893-1984) MARILYN MONROE NUDE
 An oil on canvas painting of Marilyn Monroe reclining nude in bed. Signed middle right “Earl Moran.”
Earl Moran was a prominent pin-up artist during the 1930s and 40s with a stylish flair that helped sell millions of calendars for publishers Brown & Bigelow. In 1946 Moran had the good fortune of meeting an aspiring model named Norma Jean Dougherty, soon to become famous as Marilyn Monroe. Dozens of photographs were taken of Monroe in various poses which Moran then used to paint seductive nudes in oil and pastel, portraying Marilyn as a blonde, redhead and even as a brunette. The painting shown here was purchased by the consignor's wife directly from Moran after they met him at the Laguna Art Festival. The consignor fondly recalls how Moran explained to them that the model for the painting was a young woman named Norma Jean Dougherty.
