Mae Martin (Adele Jergens) rejoint la chambre qu'elle partage avec sa fille Peggy Martin (Marilyn Monroe) où elles sont reçues chez Mme Carroll (Nana Bryant), la mère de Randy Carroll (Rand Brooks) que fréquente Peggy. Mae a passé une partie de la soirée à discuter de mondanités avec Mme Carroll, un sujet de discussion pourtant éloigné du milieu social de Mae, qui préfère s'en amuser.
Peggy est quand à elle émerveillée mais elle fait part à sa mère de son ressenti vis à vis de la situation qu'elle semble être trop belle pour être vrai ("J'éspère seulement que ce n'est pas qu'un rêve et que je me réveillerai un jour").

Mae Martin (Adele Jergens) joins the bedroom she shares with her daughter Peggy Martin (Marilyn Monroe) where they are received at Mrs. Carroll's (Nana Bryant) home, mother of Randy Carroll (Rand Brooks) whom Peggy frequents. Mae spent part of the evening discussing social affairs with Mrs. Carroll, a subject of discussion yet far removed from Mae's social middle, who prefers to have fun with it.
Peggy is on her own amazed but she tells her mother how she feels about the situation that she seems to be too good to be true ("I only hope it is not a dream and someday I wake up").

Pendant ce temps, Randy Carroll (Rand Brooks) finit de rédiger un courrier dans son bureau quand sa mère Adele Carroll (Nana Bryant) frappe à la porte car elle désire discuter de Peggy, prenant un ton plutôt solennel. Randy, embarassé, souhaite commencer la discussion (il désire en réalité dévoiler à sa mère le métier de Peggy, danseuse et chanteuse de revue dans un cabaret), mais il n'a pas le temps d'aborder la discussion, que sa mère l'interrompt pour lui annoncer son idée d'organiser une fête de fiançailles, avec beaucoup de divertissement, voulant ainsi faire plaisir à son fils de le voir enfin si amoureux; on apprend qu'il est par ailleurs son fils unique.

Meanwhile, Randy Carroll (Rand Brooks) is finishing writing a letter in his office room when his mother Adele Carroll (Nana Bryant) knocks on the door wanting to discuss about Peggy, taking on a rather solemn tone. Randy, embarrassed, wants to start the discussion (he actually wants to reveal to his mother the profession of Peggy, dancer and singer in a cabaret), but he does not have time to start the discussion, so his mother interrupts him to announce her idea to organize an engagement party, with a lot of entertainment, thus wanting to please his son to finally see him so in love; we learn that he is also his only son.
