Letter dated May 26, 1947, written by Len Cormier to Marilyn Monroe, at her address of "11348 Nebraska Avenue, West Los Angeles, California"; 5-page letter recto, on "SkyMail" stationery, posted from Sydney, Australia, where Cormier is located.
Len Cormier was a young Navy pilot who dated Marilyn for a while in 1946. They had at least two dates: one where they danced at Tommy Dorsey's Casino Gardens in Santa Monica (in 1946), and one another where he took her flying in his plane (the only civilian he ever took up in plane, he later recalled).

In his letter from training camp, he writes, "I'll have to admit that I don't leave your picture out all the time, since nobody would get any work done if it were." He relays his experiences with flight operations and traveling, and ends his letter with a thoughtful message to his career-oriented friend: "I've still got my fingers crossed, hoping that all the breaks in the world come to you."

Quelle grande nouvelle concernant ton dernier casting - bon - j'espère.

1st page transcript:
Dear Marilyn,
Maybe you didn't believe me when I told you how slow I was about writing - but you're probably convinced now. Even though there was a feeble excuse (wasn't sure of the address). I am very sorry.
What's the big news about your last test - good - I hope. It will just be a matter of time with you either way - but it will be a nice shortcut. (That's a lot of training to call a shortcut, isn't it ?)
I'll have to admit that I d'ont leave your picture out all of time, since nobody would get any work done if it were. Everytime everyone sees it, it's good for a couple of low whistles and a salvo of questions.

Actress Jean Peters and Marilyn Monroe in 1947 at the 20th Century Fox commissary, named the "Café de Paris", in Los Angeles.

1947-LA-at_20th_Century_Fox_Commissary-MM_with_Jean_Peters-1

As we notice it by its clothing, Jean Peters is in filming of "Captain from Castile", which is besides her first role in the cinema and in which she shares the headliner with Tyrone Power. The filming of the film lasts from November 25, 1946 to April 4, 1947.

1947-LA-at_20th_Century_Fox_Commissary-set_Jean_Peters_Captain_From_Castile-2
1947-LA-at_20th_Century_Fox_Commissary-set_Jean_Peters_Captain_From_Castile-1

For her part, Marilyn Monroe is filming in that year 1947 her first film for the Fox which is summed up by two brief scenes in "Scudda Hoo! Scudda Hay!" and whose filming takes place from February to July 1947. Moreover, Jean Peters was even tested for "Scudda Hoo! Scudda Hay!" but was not retained, getting much better as she stars with the female role in "Captain from Castile."

It is possible that Marilyn's presence at the canteen is linked to the shooting of another film (she only obtains extras during her first filmings at Fox in 1947: "The Shocking Miss Pilgrim", "You Were Meant For Me", "Green Grass of Wyoming", and whose brief appearances remain unidentifiable in the final versions of these films, being in scenes among crowds).
Or again her presence is only fortuitous, Marilyn going almost daily to the Fox studios, waiting to be able to obtain a role.

NANCY SAUNDERS

She began by being a dancer, and it was while performing at the Cocoanut Grove nightclub that she was discovered by Don Dillaway, actor and talent scout, who lead her to an audition for the RKO studios, with whom she signed a six-month contract and made her shoot five films (including "The Locket" in 1946 with Robert Mitchum) because she knew how to ride a horse: she will also become a recurring actress in Western movies (in the Durango Kids series). She then signed for Columbia; in 1947, she was 22 years old and she was on screen in 13 films that year. She is also on the cover of LIFE magazine along with other aspiring actresses "The 9 Hopefuls" with Jane Greer, Martha Hyer, Debra Alden, Virginia Huston, Mimi Berry, Bonnie Blair, Bonnie Lester and Nan Leslie. Her career declined in the 1950s, she moved away from the middle and worked as a receptionist in a travel agency (for Air Cal Airlines). However, she returned to the screen in the late 1990s and early 2000s, filming in some TV series. She died on June 13, 2020, at the age of 94, from leukemia.

DOROTHY MALONE
Of all the starlets, Dorothy Malone is the one who managed to make a name. Born January 29, 1924 in Chicago, her family moved to Dallas; she has four brothers and sisters and the family will be struck by the tragedy: two of her sisters die of polio and her brother is struck by lightning. Popular in high school, she is athletic and wins swimming and riding awards. She moved to Hollywood and in addition to pursuing a pin-up career, she signed a contract with the RKO in 1943 (she knew sing and dance and played in two musicals with Frank Sinatra) then with the Warner Bros in 1945, and turns in the now great classic "The Big Sleep" with Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall in 1946 but the Warner doesn't renew its contract. She leaves the cinema and returns to live in Dallas and works in an insurance agency and it's during a business trip that she discovers the city of New York which fascinates her. She moved there and took acting lessons (at the American Theater Wing) and appeared in front of the small screen in B-series movies and TV shows (like the Martin & Lewis Show).
Naturally brunette, she faded into platinum blonde, signed a contract with Universal and played small roles (in a few westerns and minor films) until winning the Oscar for best actress in a supporting role in "Written on the wind" in 1957 with Rock Hudson and Lauren Bacall. In the 1960s, she played in the TV soap "Peyton Place" and continued her career on the TV screen until the 1980s, before retiring to return to live in Dallas, only returning to Hollywood occasionally: her last role was a participation in "Basic Instinct" in 1992 with Sharon Stone. She died of natural causes in 2018, at the age of 93.
On the private side, she married (and divorced) three times: with the French actor Jacques Bergerac (from 1959 to 1964, with whom she has two daughters), with Robert Tomarkin, a stockbroker (in 1969) then with a businessman, Charles Huston Bell (from 1971 to 1974).

"

Having just signed her first contract with 20th Century Fox (at the end of August 1946), the photographer Earl Theisen (who worked for the American magazine Look) is hired to take official photographs of Marilyn Monroe for the studio. It is during the year 1947, in a field of Los Angeles, that the shooting takes place. However, no one og these photographs will be published. They will not be unveiled to the public until 2012, thanks to the photographer's daughter, Ines, who found them and sent them to the Getty agency.

This is the first photo shoot between Earl Theisen and Marilyn; the photographer will tell:
"I remember a series I shot with Marilyn, oh back in 1946 or 1947. I picked her up at her place and I saw a big book on the human anatomy open and all marked up, and I said, 'What was the idea,' and she said, 'I'm studying the bone structure of the body. Your body does what your bones do. Did you know that?'
Anything she does is calculated and is based on a more scientific knowledge of the human body than anybody has except doctors. She's built kind of like a sex machine. She can turn it on and off. I've seen her turn the sex machine into operation. I'll focus on her, get ready to shoot, and then looking in the finder, I can actually see the sex blossoming out, like it was a flower. If I'm in a hurry and want to shoot too quickly, she'll say, 'Earl, you shot it too quick. It won't be right. Let's do it over.' You see, it takes time for her to create this sex thing. And don't let anybody tell you it's in her hips or in her bosom. I'll tell you where it's located. It's in her mind. That's where it is."
