Début novembre 1944*: Norma Jeane Dougherty à l'usine Radioplane Munitions Factory, où elle travaille dans deux postes: d'abord à l'inspection des parachutes puis -vers novembre - au vernissage du fuselage des avions dans la salle des enduits dans ce qui est nommé la "salle toxique". Une équipe de photographes de l'armée -dont le sergent David Conover- ont été envoyés à l'usine par Ronald Reagan, Capitaine au sein de la First Motion Picture Unit de la U.S. Army Air Force; Reagan connaissant bien le directeur de l'usine Radioplane, Reginald Denny, un ancien acteur et scénariste. Les photographes photographient et filment les jeunes femmes en plein travail à l'usine. Il semble qu'ils soient venus plusieurs fois à l'usine pour prendre des photos, mais Norma Jeane était alors absente: elle écrit à "Tante" Grace Goddard, le 4 juin 1945: "Ils ont tous demandé dans quel service j'avais été cachée. Je leur ai répondu que j'étais de retour après une absence où j'étais avec les miens." 
Dans la même lettre, elle raconte: "la chef et le chef m'avaient fait sortir pour que l'armée prennent des photos de moi. (...) Ils ont pris beaucoup de films de moi (...) Ils étaient tous des officiers de l'armée bien sympathiques. Après avoir fini de faire les photos, un capitaine de l'armée du nom de David Conover m'a dit qu'il était très interessé d'obtenir d'autres clichés de moi en couleur." Ainsi, Norma Jeane a été photographiée et filmée par une équipe de photographes.
Frappé par la beauté de Norma Jeane, David Conover demande l'accord des responsables de l'usine pour la photographier. Elle est ainsi déplacée dans une autre unité au sein de l'usine et il la photographie à la chaîne de montage des drones RP-5.

Early November 1944*: Norma Jeane Dougherty at the Radioplane Munitions Factory, where she worked in two sections: first inspecting parachutes then - around November - varnishing the fuselage of aircraft at the called “doper-brush room”. A team of Army photographers - including Sergeant David Conover - were sent to the factory by Ronald Reagan, Captain in the First Motion Picture Unit of the U.S. Army Air Force; Reagan knew well the director of the Radioplane factory, Reginald Denny, a former actor and screenwriter. The photographers photograph and film the young women working in the factory. It seems that they came to the factory several times to take photos, but Norma Jeane was away at the time: she wrote to "Aunt" Grace Goddard on June 4, 1945: "They all asked where in the H... I had been hidding. I told them I had been back East on leave of absence with my folks." 
In the same letter, she tells: "the leadlady and leadman had me out there having the Army taking pictures of me.(...) They took a lot of moving pictures of me (...) They were all nice army officers and men. After the finished with some of the pictures, a army Cpl by the name of David Conover told me he woud be very interested in getting some color still shots of me." Thus, Norma Jeane was photographed and filmed by a team of photographers.
Struck by the beauty of Norma Jeane, David Conover asks the factory managers for permission to photograph her. She is thus moved from another unit within the factory and he photographs her at the RP-5 drone assembly line.

David Conover lui propose de faire d'autres photos à l'extérieur, pendant sa pause déjeuner. Avec l'accord de sa hiérarchie, elle accepte et ils vont sur le parking de l'usine pour prendre des photos à la lumière naturelle.

Struck by Norma Jeane's beauty, David Conover suggested that she take more photos outside, during her lunch break. With the agreement of her superiors, she accepts and they go to the factory parking lot to take photos in natural light.

David Conover lui demande si elle n'aurait pas autre chose à se mettre; Norma Jeane retourne à son vestiaire et apparaît vêtue de son pull rouge.

David Conover asks her if she has anything else to wear; Norma Jeane returns to her locker room and appears wearing her red sweater.

Les photos de Norma-Jeane ont-elles vraiment été publiées dans Yank ?
Le reportage photographique de David Conover était destiné à illustrer un article sur le rôle jouée par les femmes pendant la seconde Guerre Mondiale, et leur participation à l'effort de guerre, en travaillant dans les usines, remplaçant la main d'oeuvre masculine partie faire la guerre. Un article "The Women in Industry" sera bien publié dans le Yank du 22 décembre 1944 (édition USA), mais sans aucune photo de Norma Jeane / Marilyn.
Une autre rumeur va aussi circuler: celle que Norma Jeane aurait fait la couverture du Yank du 2 août 1945, mais c'est totalement faux (nb: le 02 août 1945 correspond à la date à laquelle elle signe son contrat à l'agence de mannequin Blue Book). D'autres dates de Yank seront aussi communiquées, déclarant que Marilyn figure en photo dans le magazine: on peut notamment lire que le Yank, The Army Weekly du 26 juin 1945 aurait publié l'une des photographies où elle travaille à l'assemblage d'un drône. Bien que le magazine Yank existait sous diverses éditions selon le pays de destination, il n'y a jusqu'à présent aucune photographie de cette séance de Conover qui n'a été retrouvée publiée dans le magazine.

Does Norma-Jeane's photos were really published in Yank?
 The photographic report by David Conover was intended to illustrate an article on the role played by women during the Second World War, and their participation in the war effort, by working in the factories, replacing the male workforce left to do the war. An article "The Women in Industry" will indeed be published in the Yank of December 22, 1944 (USA edition), but without any photo of Norma Jeane / Marilyn.
 Another rumor will also circulate: the one that Norma Jeane would have made the cover of the Yank of August 2, 1945, but it is totally false (nb: August 2, 1945 corresponds to the date on which she signed her contract with the Blue Book modeling agency). Other dates of Yank will thus be communicated, declaring that Marilyn appears in a photo in the magazine: one can in particular read that the Yank, The Army Weekly of June 26, 1945 would have published one of the photographs where she works on the assembly of a drone. Although Yank magazine existed in various editions depending on the country of destination, there are so far no photographs of this session of Conover which have not been found published in the magazine.

Ils ont tous demandé dans quel service j'avais été cachée. Je leur ai répondu que j'étais de retour après une absence où j'étais avec les miens."

Premières photographies professionnelles de Norma Jeane Dougherty au printemps / été 1945 par David Conover, le photographe envoyé par l'armée qui l'a "découverte" à l'usine à la fin de l'année 1944, et qui la photographie au printemps 1945 dans son studio.
Norma Jeane écrit à "Tante" Grace Goddard, le 4 juin 1945, en parlant de Conover: "Il avait un studio sur Sunset Boulevard, dans le quartiers des night clubs." C'est certainement dans ce studio sur Sunset Boulevard qu'a été prise cette photographie.
