Books loved by Hollywood's golden era stars

Books loved by Hollywood's golden era stars, from Marilyn Monroe to Audrey Hepburn
02/09/2019 | en ligne sur Evening Standard

The great American novel is a girl's best friend

Way back before the advent of the Internet and social media, movie stars had to find ways to entertain themselves on set without getting into highly public Twitter spats.

Many celebrities from Hollywood’s golden age were avid bookworms, with the likes of Marilyn Monroe tearing through American classics and Grace Kelly curating a private library in Monaco. Old Hollywood's reading habits have now been documented in new book, The Hollywood Book Club: Reading with the Stars.

While we might be more used to seeing Audrey Hepburn or Marlon Brando bringing literary adaptations to life onscreen, the book by Steven Rea, published thismonth, is a collection of black and white pictures showing stars enjoying some reading time of their own.

From shots of Gregory Peck researching his Oscar-winning role by reading Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird to Monroe's reading nook filled with Hemingway, Steinbeck and Tolstoy, the full collection comprises of 55 candid shots of Hollywood stars reading.

Described as a “bibliophile-meets-cinephile celebration of the convergence points between these two very different media”, it’s a fascinating insight into what a golden era shelfie may have looked like.

We’ve compiled a list of books that celebrities including Monroe, Kelly, Hepburn, James Dean and more were into to add to your reading list.

Marilyn Monroe

Endless books have been written about Monroe and her quotes have been immortalised in low-res Instagram posts, however, she found her inspiration from her vast personal collection of books. In fact, Monroe loved poetry so much that evidence of her own poems surfaced in 2010 when a collection of her personal documents was released. The poems were later released in the book Fragments: Poems, Intimate Notes, Letters by Marilyn Monroe.

Monroe had a huge book collection, with many of her novels put up for auction in 1999 in New York. Monroe was a major fan of landmark American novels, as well as poems, hulking great Euronovels and plays. There were a couple of surprising choices, like the occasional children’s book or pop culture novel.

Marilyn Monroe's favourite books and authors

  • The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway
  • The Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald
  • On the Road by Jack Kerouac
  • Ulysses by James Joyce
  • Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky
  • Long Day’s Journey tInto Night by Eugene O’Neill
  • From Russia With Love by Ian Fleming
  • The Little Engine that Could by Watty Piper
  • Selected Plays of George Bernard Shaw
  • The Portable Blake by William Blake

Description: Ella Fitzgerald and Marilyn Monroe were mutual supporters according to this historical picture book.Ella and Marilyn were different on the outside, but both were "full of hopes and dreams" while their circumstances were humble. After they got their big breaks, Ella in jazz singing and Marilyn in acting, each struggled to reach her full potential. In the United States, Ella faced barriers due to racism and places that only hired "glamorous" stars. Marilyn got plenty of roles, but as a woman in an industry run by men, she lacked control over her career. When she got a script with a big singing role, she listened to her favorite singer, Ella, to practice for it. The movie was a hit, and Marilyn was finally able to get her voice heard as a professional. She went to thank Ella in person at one of Ella's shows, and the two talked into the night. When Marilyn learned of the barriers Ella faced, she used her star status to negotiate a performance for Ella at a popular nightclub. While Marilyn is shown attaining fame first, this warm story emphasizes Ella's role in her success, thus avoiding the trap of the white-savior narrative. Many white artists have benefited from imitating black ones; this is the rare narrative to acknowledge that. Harris' illustrations are stiff but engaging; saturated with color, they capture the iconic looks of the two stars. A good volume to include in a larger conversation about friendship, allyship, and social justice.(author's note, sources) (Picture book/biography. 5-10), Kirkus Reviews

African American singer Ella Fitzgerald and blonde movie star Marilyn Monroe shared their need to be heard and helped each other along the way. Kirkfield describes the obstacles these women faced: Fitzgerald battled racism, and Monroe was underestimated due to her gender. Monroe taught herself to become a better singer by listening to recordings of Fitzgerald's songs and achieved star status for her role in the 1953 film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. In turn, she convinced the owner of a formerly whites-only Hollywood night club to hire Fitzgerald, paving the way for the jazz singer's more universal recognition. The relatively simple text is supported by an author's note and extensive sources, both primary (videos and interviews) and secondary (books and online resources). Kirkfield makes clear that both women brought deep personal feelings to their performances. Harris's digital illustrations are varied, from vignettes to full and double-page spreads. One striking spread echoed on the title page and cover shows the pair still engaged in conversation in an otherwise empty and darkened nightclub.

Un Biopic et Une Série en préparation sur Marilyn Monroe

Le Biopic sur la vie de Marilyn
Actuellement en tournage à Los Angeles, le film est produit par Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner et Jeremy Kleiner pour la plateforme en streaming Netflix et dont la diffusion est prévue en 2021. Le réalisateur et scénariste australien Andrew Dominik, qui travaille depuis une dizaine d'année sur le projet du biopic, s'inspire du roman "Blonde" de Joyce Carol Oates, pourtant déjà adapté pour la télévision en 2001 dans lequel l'actrice Poppy Montgomery y tenait le rôle de Marilyn. Cette fois-ci, après Naomi Watts et Jessica Chastain qui avaient été évoquées et envisagées, c'est finalement l'actrice cubano-espagnole Ana de Armas qui prête ses traits à Marilyn. Agée de 31 ans, et plutôt méconnue du grand public (bien que prochaine James Bond Girl), ce rôle fera sans doute parler d'elle. Des photos prises sur le tournage où l'on découvre l'actrice en Marilyn, fuite sur les réseaux sociaux et déclenche d'ores et déjà un tollé de la part des admirateurs de Marilyn, reprochant à l'actrice sa silhouette trop longiligne, pas assez pulpeuse;

La série s'inspire du livre "The Final Years of Marilyn Monroe", écrit par Keith Badman.

Earl Moran y a peint Marilyn Monroe.

mickey_bach-gift-illustration_from_7_artists-1

Unique painting with contributions by seven famous illustrators, including Dr. Seuss. Sixty years ago, cartoonist Mickey Bach hung a blank canvas on the wall of his home with the words ''Watch This Space!'' on it, with the intention of having his famous friends lend their contributions to the piece, which they did: Dr. Seuss, Earl Moran, Andy Loomis, Jefferson Machamer, Henry Clive, Clifford McBride and one other unknown artist all painted upon the canvas. Dr. Seuss' drawing features a Seussian character staring at an Andy Loomis drawing of a busty young woman, admiring her shapely figure as he says ''Nature Lover''. Jefferson Machamer paints a nude young woman staring straight ahead with her hand resting on the head of a Santa Claus painted by Henry Clive, with a caption reading, ''What are you wasting your time reading this for?''. Earl Moran paints a portrait of Marilyn Monroe and Clifford McBride paints a man and his dog, both looking happily startled. Portrait artist Randy Taslar paints an image of cartoonist Mickey Bach to upper right. Framed painting measures 35.5'' x 29.25''. Weighs 7.6 lbs. A fun piece in very good condition.
