Le 28 février 1951 se tient le dîner organisé par l'Association hollywoodienne de la presse étrangère (le Hollywood Foreign Press Correspondents Association), une organisation regroupant des journalistes spécialisés dans le cinéma américain et présidé cette année là par le compositeur de musique de films et journaliste Bert Reisfeld. Ses membres votent et décident chaque année des nominations et attributions des Golden Globes, récompensant les productions de l'année précédente. D'ailleurs, à la cérémonie, le film Eve est nommé dans plusieurs catégories tout comme Quand la ville dort, ce qui pourrait expliquer la présence de Marilyn Monroe qui sert alors de support de promotion et de représentation aux films:
- Eve est nommé dans la catégorie "meilleur film" (c'est "Sunset Boulevard" qui est récompensé);
- Bette Davies est nommée "meilleure actrice" dans Eve (c'est Gloria Swanson qui a le prix pour sa performance dans "Sunset Boulevard");
- George Sanders est nommé "meilleur acteur dans un second rôle" dans Eve (c'est Edmund Gwenn qui a le prix pour son rôle dans "Mister 880");

19/06/1951, Long Beach - Marilyn visite le navire USS Benhamn
Le navire destroyer de la marine américainé Benham (le DD796, la troisième version du navire après la destruction des deux premiers pendant la guerre) est construit en 1943 et participe à la seconde guerre mondiale contre les Japonais. Désarmé en 1946, le navire est stationné pendant cinq ans à Long Beach, en Californie, jusqu'en 1951 et la guerre de Corée.
Le 19 juin 1951, Marilyn Monroe est invitée sur le navire USS Benham, juste avant le départ du navire sur la côte Est. Marilyn visite le navire et une projection du film "The Frogmen" ("Les Hommes-grenouilles") sur le thème des équipes UDT de la Marine avec Richard Widmark, est organisé à bord. Pour couvrir l'événement et en faire un reportage photographique, le photographe John Florea accompagne Marilyn.
Marilyn a emprunté sa tenue aux studios de la Fox, une robe en satin noir de la costumière Renié, qu'elle porte dans le film Rendez-moi ma femme - qui sortira sur les écrans de cinéma aux USA le 02 août 1951.
The American navy destroyer Benham (the DD796, the third version of the ship after the destruction of the first two during the war) was built in 1943 and participated to the Second World War against the Japanese. Decommissioned in 1946, the ship was stationed for five years at Long Beach, in California, until 1951 and the Korean War.
On June 19, 1951, Marilyn Monroe is invited to the USS Benham, just before the ship left for the East coast. Marilyn visits the ship and a screening of the film "The Frogmen" on the theme of the UDT teams of the Navy with Richard Widmark, is organized on board. To cover the event and make a photographic report, photographer John Florea accompanies Marilyn.
Marilyn borrowed her outfit from the Fox studios, a black satin dress by costume designer Renié, which she wears in the film "As young as you feel" - which will be released on cinema screens in the USA on August 02, 1951.

Le 8 mars 1961, c'est accompagnée de sa secrétaire May Reis que Marilyn Monroe se rend à l'enterrement d'Augusta Miller, mère d'Arthur Miller, dont Marilyn vient de se se séparer. Elle va devenir de plus en plus proche de son ex beau père, Isadore Miller (le père d'Arthur).
Juin 1961 Baptême du fils Gable
En Juin 1961, Marilyn Monroe se rend au St Cyril's Catholic Church, au baptême de John Clark Gable, l'unique fils de l'acteur Clark Gable, né le 20 mars 1961; Clark Gable venait de mourir d'une crise cardiaque quatre mois auparavant (le 16 novembre 1960). La chroniqueuse Louella Parsons (vêtue en bleu) est aussi invitée.

La mort de Clark Gable souleva des interrogations et certains mirent en cause Marilyn: en effet, ils venaient tous deux de terminer le tournage des Misfits, qui fut fatiguant pour Gable car il avait insisté pour réaliser lui même les cascades sous la chaleur étouffante du désert du Nevada. De plus, on le disait souvent stressé de par les retards incessants de Marilyn, ainsi que les nombreuses prises à refaire car comme à son habitude, elle ne savait pas son texte et se montrait capricieuse. Cependant, la présence de Marilyn au baptême fait taire les rumeurs de discordes avec Kay Gable, la veuve de Clark, qui, disait-on, reprochait à Marilyn d'avoir causé la mort de son mari. Marilyn se sentant coupable, elle sombrit davantage dans la dépression, mais finalement, Kay soutiendra Marilyn en lui affirmant que ce sont les cascades sur le tournage qui ont épuisé son mari.

11/07/1961 Sortie du Polyclinical Hospital
Le 11 juillet 1961 à New York, Marilyn Monroe, accompagnée de John Springer, quitte le Polyclinical Hospital de Manhattan, après avoir subi l'ablation de la vésicule biliaire. Tantôt souriante, tantôt appeurée, amaigrie et fragilisée (elle sort dans un fauteuil roulant, avant de se lever), Marilyn quitte l'hôpital deux semaines après y avoir été admise. Comme toujours, la presse est à l'affût, mais Marilyn garde le sourire; elle est escortée par des policiers pour affronter la cohue des 200 photographes, journalistes et admirateurs.
On July 11, 1961 in New York, Marilyn Monroe, with John Springer, leaves the Polyclinical Hospital in Manhattan after surgery to remove the gallbladder. Sometimes smiling, sometimes frighten, thin and fragile (she comes out in a wheelchair, before to get up), Marilyn leaves the hospital two weeks after being admitted. As always, the press is on the lookout, but Marilyn still smiling. She is escorted by police officers to face the mob of 200 photographers, journalists and fans.

Auparavant, Marilyn avait appelé la photographe Eve Arnold de l'hôpital car le magazine "Good Housekeeping" souhaitait faire un article sur son coiffeur Kenneth Battelle. Eve Arnold retrouve Marilyn le jour de sa sortie d'hôpital, dans son appartement new-yorkais au 444 East sur la 57ème Rue, pour la séance photos.
Eve Arnold: "Marilyn et Keneth firent les fous devant l'objectif, elle le taquinait parce qu'il ne montrait que son profil le plus photogénique. Nous n'avons fait qu'une bobine. Une seule photographie était nécessaire et je ne voulais pas fatiguer Marilyn. (...) Ce fut ma dernière entrevue avec Marilyn et la dernière fois que je la photographiais."
Eve Arnold et Marilyn ont convenu de retravailler à nouveau ensemble: la photographe venait de signer un contrat avec le "Sunday Times" en Angleterre et voulait soumettre ultérieurement à la rédaction un reportage photos avec Marilyn. Mais les deux femmes ne se revirent jamais.
Previously, Marilyn called the photographer Eve Arnold from the hospital because the magazine "Good Housekeeping" wanted to do an article on her hairdresser Kenneth Battelle. Eve Arnold meets Marilyn the day of hospital discharge, in her New York apartment on 444 East 57th Street, for the shoot.
Eve Arnold: "Marilyn and Kenneth played up for the camera, she teased him about his showing the more photogenic side of his face. We did just one roll of the film. One photograph was necessary and I did not want to tire Marilyn. (...) This was the last time O saw her and the last time I photographed her".
Eve Arnold and Marilyn agreed to work together again: the photographer had just signed a contract with the "Sunday Times" in England and would later submit in writing a report photos with Marilyn. But the two women never met again.

Le théâtre en 1960
Le "Circle" est l'un des premiers groupes de théâtre professionnels basé à Los Angeles et formé en 1945 par un groupe d'étudiants de l'université d'UCLA. Parmi les premiers élèves, trois auront une certaine renommée: Kathleen Freeman, William Schallert et Sydney Chaplin (l'un des fils de Charlie Chaplin).
D'ailleurs Marilyn connaissait bien Sydney Chaplin: elle avait eu une romance avec l'un de ses demi-frères Charlie Chaplin Jr; et il semblerait qu'elle ait aussi eu une liaison avec Sydney.
"The Circle" was one of the first Los Angeles-based professional theatre groups and formed in 1945 by a group of UCLA university students. Among the first students, three will have a certain fame: Kathleen Freeman, William Schallert and Sydney Chaplin (one of Charlie Chaplin's sons).
Besides, Marilyn knew Sydney Chaplin well: she had a romance with one of his half-brothers Charlie Chaplin Jr; and it seems she also had an affair with Sydney.

En novembre 1949, des membres de la troupe (Kathleen Freeman, Paul Levitt, Ted Thorpe et une douzaine d'autres - surnommés "le groupe des dissidents" par le magazine "Variety") décident de former leur propre théâtre, où ils reprennent la particularité de se produire en ronde: c'est le "Players Ring". Ils transforment un ancien magasin d'antiquité en un théâtre de 200 places au 8351 Santa Monica Boulevard sur North Flores Avenue (dans l'actuel West Hollywood). Le théatre acquiert rapidement une renommée: leur première production en février 1950 "Street Scene" d'Elmer Rice avec 50 acteurs fait sensation. Leur deuxième spectacle "Androcles and the Lion" de George Bernard Shaw commence en mai 1950 et la presse leur consacre des articles. Bon nombre d'acteurs (débutants et confirmés) se précipitent au théâtre qui devient le lieu où se montrer pour faire parler de soi: Shelley Winters, Roddy MacDowall, les Marx Brothers (Groucho et Harpo) sont aperçus dans le public.
Beaucoup d'acteurs débuteront en passant par ce théâtre: Jack Cassidy, Michael Landon, et le plus connu reste Jack Nicholson (il y tient son premier rôle sur scène en 1956).
C'est le 12 mars 1950 que Marilyn Monroe passe une audition pour un rôle au théâtre "Players Ring": est-ce pour leur deuxième production qui verra le jour en mai ou une autre pièce, il n'y a aucune information. Le photographe Richard C. Miller saisit ce moment.
In November 1949, members of the troupe (Kathleen Freeman, Paul Levitt, Ted Thorpe and a dozen others - named "the dissident group" by "Variety" magazine) decides to form their own theater, where they takes the particularity of performing in the round: it is the "Players Ring". They transform a former antique store into a 200-seat theater at 8351 Santa Monica Boulevard at North Flores Avenue (now West Hollywood). The theater quickly gaines fame: their first production in February 1950 "Street Scene" by Elmer Rice with 50 actors makes a sensation. Their second show "Androcles and the Lion" by George Bernard Shaw began in May 1950 and the press devoted articles to them. Many actors (beginners and confirmed) rush to the theater which becomes the place to show off to talk about oneself: Shelley Winters, Roddy MacDowall, the Marx Brothers (Groucho and Harpo) are seen in the audience.
Many actors will begin by passing through this theater: Jack Cassidy, Michael Landon, and the most famous remains Jack Nicholson (he played his first role there in 1956).
It is on March 12, 1950 that Marilyn Monroe auditions for a part in a play at the "Players Ring" theater: is it for their second production which will be released in May or for another play, there is no information. Photographer Richard C. Miller captures this moment.
