Isabelle Adjani: “In Cannes, you are placed between blondes and hotties”
On stage, she dialogues with Marilyn, in Cannes, she will defend the films of François Ozon and Nicolas Bedos. And, as always, Isabelle Adjani reinvents herself to the point of vertigo. For us, she replays the mythical photo shoot signed Bert Stern, in 1962, and confides in the time of a meeting, necessarily intense.
There are encounters that take on magic, secret correspondence… When Isabelle Adjani pays homage to Marilyn Monroe on cover of ELLE, the alchemy is so strong, so obvious, so natural that no photo editing is necessary. As if two girlfriends were meeting in secret. Isabelle and Norma Jeane, it's a long story of crosswords that the first evokes in an extraordinary single on stage, on tour this summer: "Le Vertige Marilyn". But before that, there is Cannes, the Festival, another vertigo. And two very different films: that of François Ozon, “Peter von Kant”, a tribute to Fassbinder. And that of Nicolas Bedos, "Mascarade", "a necklace of little nightmares of youth", as he likes to define it. In each, Isabelle plays with the cliché of the divine and devouring diva... and wins! Because Isabelle thwarts, too. With the same seriousness, this desire to do well, this "good little soldier" side that we attributed to Marilyn, she first answers a first round of questions by email. Then, once this meticulous work is done, late at night, she offers to meet us for a coffee. Newsboy cap, sunglasses, "cream" and a morning croissant at hand, she is adorable (and insomniac?).
Mixture of nonchalant impertinence and depth. Each sentence is a track on the way to freedom. And when she summons Cocteau to speak of an “interrupted” woman, the formula remains in our minds for a long time. Adjani is cerebral, you can't get over it, magnetized by a lucky star.
Elle – You pose for us as Marilyn Monroe: why this choice and what unites you two?
Isabelle Adjani – Oh dear! I'm not posing as Marilyn Monroe, it's Madonna or Kim Kardashian posing, right? [Laughs] I sit there, as a tender admirer, on the eve of the 60th anniversary of his death. On the set of Jean-Paul Rappeneau's "Tout feu tout flamme", before each scene, Yves Montand told me that I reminded him of Marilyn! I was very modest and anything but peroxide, so I didn't understand what he wanted to tell me. I could see that he was moved, but at the time I had to tell myself that he was using his "Marilyn aura" as a girl trap! [Laughs] Later, during a shoot for the magazine "Egoïste", the great Richard Avedon had put on my body, on my shoulders, the shearling jacket that had belonged to Marilyn and in which he had photographed her. My first physical and mystical contact with her was that, almost skin to skin... Today, it's this long Dior dress photographed in 1962 by another great, Bert Stern, and of which I'm wearing an exact copy my turn on the stage of "Vertige Marilyn", a text by Olivier Steiner, which is a dream dialogue between her and me and a theatrical poem. He imagines that there have been points of contact between us over the years, such as brushings, synchronicities, whispers that would have ended up tracing an invisible path, a bond of sisterhood, in my existence. And then, Marilyn never went to Cannes, the Croisette didn't have the chance to have Miss Monroe, so when ELLE offered me this series with Jan Welters for a Cannes special, we immediately had want this nod to Bert Stern's unforgettable cult shoot, and thus take him for a ride to the Festival, also to make me feel less alone.
Another tribute to Marilyn in these photos, you are wearing jewels in "Diamonds are a Girl's best friend" style...
Yes, it's the Courbet brand, which has made it its mission to reinvent jewelry while respecting the environment. I was touched to the heart by their process of creating diamonds, in a high-tech laboratory, because they are real diamonds with the same precious qualities of purity and transparency as those extracted from the entraielles of the earth, from these monstrous craters that mess up the environment. Marilyn would have loved to have them as friends, she who loved nature. It's my instinct.
When we think of Marilyn Monroe, we think of star, sex symbol, but also loneliness, childhood flaws, violation of intimacy... Does that speak to you? Do you sometimes feel like a survivor, of having survived to this job?
In all the actresses I feel close to, the faults of childhood have dug a deep desire, a vital need to be different. Going from survivor to "reviving", I think that's what they do, that's what I did, that's what Norma Jeane did by creating Marilyn Monroe. Trials are not avoided, but I believe in a star that keeps watch and allows us to move forward in the dark night. A star made of love, of spirit, of blood, of the big bang of our birth. And even dead, her light continues to travel and reach us.
What do you think killed her?
Arthur Miller? Barbiturate enemas? Robert Kennedy? The death ! What killed Marilyn? The death. To live with all her being, Marilyn herself built the legend she became, then, as Pasolini said, she "surrendered to her destiny of death".

Expo Divine Marilyn

The coat has broad shoulders, a cordé collar, a satin lining, and a Jerrold's Van Nuys, Calif. label. Although the black colobus is currently on the endangered species list, it was quite fashionable in the 1940s. Monroe wrote in a letter to Grace Goddard dated December 3, 1944, "I found out that its [sic] possible to buy a Gold Coast Monkey Coat. I shall write to you about it later." The coat was gifted from Monroe to Jacquita M. Rigoni (Warren), who was the great-niece to Anne Karger, mother of Monroe's voice coach, Freddie Karger. Monroe had a close relationship with the family, and the coat has remained in their possession. Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Jacqui Rigoni detailing the family's relationship to Monroe and the history of the coat.
The monkey species used to make this Marilyn Monroe monkey fur coat is on the Endangered Species list. U.S. Endangered Species Act regulations required by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service impose certain regulations on the sale of this coat. Please read the following carefully:
Please read the following carefully: The Marilyn Monroe monkey fur coat may be sold to a resident of California without requiring a Federal permit. A non-California resident may bid on this coat and if he or she were the winning bidder could apply for a Federal permit to remove the coat from the state of California. Julien’s has been advised that a Federal permit would likely be REFUSED by the governing offices. It is vehemently advised that non-residents of California DO NOT bid on this Marilyn Monroe owned monkey fur coat. If you bid on this lot and are unable to obtain a permit Julien’s has no liability and will be unable to refund you for your purchase.
A California resident who purchases this coat and later moves from California to another state would not be required to obtain a permit if he or she maintained ownership of the coat when changing state of residence. When Monroe was taken ill while filming, Le Brun, who was responsible for overseeing the distribution of all finances, which involved the insurance and wellbeing of the cast and production team, stayed by her side. As a thank-you, Monroe gave him this fan, or more specifically gave the fan to his wife as an apology for keeping Le Brun from his family. Lot 155: MARILYN MONROE BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S SCRIPT AND REPORT
A clean copy of the screenplay for Breakfast at Tiffany's written by George Axelrod and dated July 9, 1959. Monroe was considering the part, and she sought the opinions of her professional team including the Strasbergs, her husband, and management team. The script is accompanied by a single-page, typed "report" dated September 23, 1959, which also has the name "Parone" typed to the left of the date. Literary luminary Edward Parone was at the time running Monroe's production company and most likely is the one who wrote this single-page, scathing review of the script, leading with the simple sentence, "I think not." It goes on to criticize the screenplay, determining, "I can see Marilyn playing a part like Holly and even giving this present one all the elan it badly needs, but I don't feel she should play it: it lacks insight and warmth and reality and importance." It has been long reported that Monroe declined the part upon the advice of Lee Strasberg, but this document provides further evidence that other people in her inner circle advised her not to take the role. Together with a four-page shooting schedule for November 4, 1960, for the film.

Lot 158: MARILYN MONROE MEDICAL FILE
A medical file pertaining to cosmetic surgery performed on Marilyn Monroe. The file includes facial X-rays and doctors' notes from the office of Dr. Michael Gurdin, M.D., and the X-ray office of Drs. Conti and Steinberg. Dr. Gurdin's chart on Monroe begins on July 14, 1958, and lists the patient as Marilyn Miller with addresses in New York and Los Angeles. The chief complaint listed is "chin deformity" and goes on to give a medical history that begins in 1950 and ends in 1962. Listed are a 1956 bout of neutropenia in England; 1957 ectopic pregnancy in New York; and 1950 cartilage implant in chin that the doctor observed had slowly begun to dissolve. Those with knowledge of the implant procedure have explained that this was done in association with a tip rhinoplasty, a procedure involving the tip of Monroe's nose only, not the bones. The last entry is dated June 7, 1962, and reports a fall at between 2 and 3 a.m. resulting in swelling and tenderness of the nose. Monroe was brought to Dr. Gurdin by her psychoanalyst, Dr. Ralph Greenson. Monroe was referred to Drs. Conti and Steinberg for X-rays. For her visit to the radiologists she was given the alias "Miss Joan Newman," and that name appears on the paperwork with Monroe's Brentwood home address. Six X-rays are in the folder: a frontal facial bones X-ray; a smaller X-ray that is a composite of the right and left sides of her nasal bones; and four small dental X-rays into the roof of Monroe's mouth, looking upward toward the nasal bones. The conclusion, written by Dr. Conti and dated June 7, 1962, is that there was no damage to Monroe's nose due to her fall. A more recent evaluation of the X-rays indicates a very minute hairline fracture of this bone. Monroe had turned 36 less than a week earlier. On June 8, the following day, Monroe was fired from the film Something's Got to Give (20th Century Fox, 1962).

Lot 2: A Natalie Wood bound screenplay of Scudda Hoo! Scudda Hay!
US$ 700 - 900 - €650 - 840
Twentieth Century-Fox, 1948. Mimeographed manuscript, revised final screenplay by F. Hugh Herbert, 149 pp, February 19, 1947 (with revision pages dated as late as March 4), burgundy leather cover stamped in gilt to upper cover with film's title and "F. Hugh Herbert." Some pages annotated in ink by Wood, who also inscribed her name, character's name address, and phone number on the title page, and some of her dialogue in pencil on the verso of the last page. This was Wood's eighth film, but is better remembered as the movie in which Marilyn Monroe utters her first speaking role.
Lot 206: A Marilyn Monroe signed contract for The Asphalt Jungle
US$ 20,000 - 30,000 - €19,000 - 28,000
Document signed ("Marilyn Monroe"), 2 pp, Hollywood, November 29, 1949, a Twentieth Century-Fox/Screen Actors Guild contract "for Free Lance Players," countersigned and dated on the verso beside Monroe's signature, inscribed in ink on the recto, "12-8-49 M. Monroe / J.S.," with additional partial page stapled to verso.
John Huston's film noir The Asphalt Jungle marked one of Marilyn Monroe's most important early, breakthrough roles, as gangster Emmerich's (Louis Calhern's) much younger moll, Angela. At the time, Monroe was virtually unknown and this contract states she received only $300 per week for her work on the film.
9 x 23 in.
Lot 207: A Marilyn Monroe suit from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes
US$ 350,000 - 500,000 - €330,000 - 470,000
Twentieth Century-Fox, 1953. Gray wool jacket with cream-colored embroidered linen collar, wired so that it stands, hook-and-eye and black button closure at the center, fitted at the hips, with partial gray crepe lining; together with a matching knee-length pencil skirt with a navy grosgrain waistband and buttons that attach to the jacket (to prevent the skirt from moving when Monroe danced), and a small slit in the back, bearing a bias label inscribed in black ink, "1-69-1194 M. Monroe A-698-40." Monroe, as Lorelei Lee, wears this suit when she and Dorothy (Jane Russell) go shopping in Paris, the hotel refuses them, and they wind up at a sidewalk café, singing "When Love Goes Wrong."
Provenance: Purchased by Debbie Reynolds from Fox in 1971; Butterfield & Butterfield, Entertainment Memorabilia, March 14, 2000, lot 5842.
A 1949 musical based on a novel by Anita Loos, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes was initially purchased by Fox as a vehicle for Betty Grable. However in light of Grable's waning popularity and comparatively high salary (almost ten times Monroe's), studio head Darryl Zanuck decided to cast the starlet Monroe instead, borrowing Jane Russell from RKO to serve as her costar. Gentlemen Prefer Blondes was a massive success and 1953 became Monroe's breakout year. She and Jane Russell put their handprints in cement at Grauman's Chinese Theater to celebrate the film's premiere, Monroe appeared on the cover of Photoplay and received its Fastest Rising Star award, and also appeared on the cover of the inaugural issue of Playboy.
A report by leading costume conservator Cara Varnell is available upon request.
Lot 208: A Marilyn Monroe red saloon gown from River of No Return
US$ 300,000 - 500,000 - €280,000 - 470,000
Twentieth Century-Fox, 1954. 19th century style saloon gown with a red cotton bodice adorned with large black sequins in a swirling pattern with black sequin trim along the neckline and each of the three shoulder straps, a black satin bustled skirt with matching red cotton trim with black sequins on either side of a high slit, and a yellow silk rose at the hip, bearing a label inscribed in black ink, "1-25-1-4413 A713-06 / M. Monroe"; and a matching pair of red cotton panties with red lace and green ribbon trim, bearing a label inscribed in black ink, "1-25-1-4413 A713-06 / M. Monroe" and a Fox cleaning tag. Monroe wears this dress while singing "One Silver Dollar" in the saloon.
Provenance: Purchased by Debbie Reynolds from Fox in 1971; Butterfield & Butterfield, Entertainment Memorabilia, March 14, 2000, lot 5843.
River of No Return stars Monroe as Kay Weston, a singer in a mining tent city in the Northwestern United States. Matt Calder (Robert Mitchum) arrives there in search of his son Mark and meets Kay, who has been looking after the child. Kay and her fiancé (Rory Calhoun) later set off on a rafting trip to Council City, and Matt rescues them after they run into trouble on the river. River of No Return was directed by Otto Preminger and shot on location in national parks in Canada to take advantage of the beautiful appearance of the landscapes on CinemaScope.
Monroe wears this dress in her first scene of the film. As Robert Mitchum enters the tent and walks around the stage, watching Monroe sing and strum a guitar, neither he nor the audience can take his eyes off of her. The image of Monroe in the dress also appears on the original one sheet poster and features prominently in the other promotional material surrounding the film.
A report by leading costume conservator Cara Varnell is available upon request.

Lot 214: A Bert Stern photograph of Marilyn Monroe
US$ 1,000 - 1,500 - €940 - 1,400
C-print signed ("Bert Stern") in green ink at lower right, and numbered 27/250. New York: Sherwood Atelier, 1978. Celebrity photographer Bert Stern is intimately linked with Monroe by the 2,500 photographs he took of her for Vogue less than two months before her untimely death. Stern later compiled those photographs for his book The Last Sitting, and this photograph was printed as part of a portfolio of ten prints in 1978. This sultry close-up of Monroe is a classic example of her vamping for Stern's camera.
Sheet: 20 x 24 in.; image: 19 7/8 x 19 7/8 in.
Lot 215: A Marilyn Monroe signed U.S. Dept. of Defense identification card
US$ 10,000 - 15,000 - €9,400 - 14,000
Card serial no. 129279, undated, signed ("Norma Jeane DiMaggio"), inscribed under the signature by the military policeman who issued the ID, with "VOID" across the body of the document. On the verso of the card, Monroe has stamped her fingerprints in black ink. Accompanied by a press photograph of Monroe visiting the Tokyo Army Hospital on February 5, 1954.
This is the file copy of the ID card issued to Marilyn Monroe during her famous visit to entertain the American soldiers in Korea. Monroe had just married Joe DiMaggio on January 14 of that year, and they traveled to Japan for their honeymoon. She received this ID card from the US Army Provost Marshall's Office in Tokyo before flying to Korea. Monroe performed in ten shows over four days before a total audience of 100,000 soldiers.
In 2008, Bonhams sold Monroe's copy of this ID card, with the date February 8, 1954, the preceding serial number of 128278 and an identical inscription from the MP on duty, for $57,000.
Provenance: Accompanied by a notarized letter of provenance from the consignor, describing how he purchased the ID card from the estate of one of the military policemen on duty that day.
3 5/8 x 2 3/8 in.
Lot 218: A revised final screenplay of Let's Make Love
US$ 500 - 700 - €470 - 650
Twentieth Century-Fox, 1960. Mimeographed manuscript, revised final screenplay by Norman Krasna, 162 pp, December 20, 1959 (with revision pages as late as January 11, 1960), bound in brads in yellow Twentieth Century-Fox wrappers printed "Revised Shooting Final," with some notations in pencil to upper cover.
George Cukor's Let's Make Love was Marilyn Monroe's penultimate completed film role. Yves Montand stars as a man impersonating an actor impersonating himself in a play costarring actress Amanda Dell (Monroe). The finished film runs 119 minutes, which indicates that various scenes were probably deleted from this lengthy script. Monroe's then-husband Arthur Miller and Hal Kanter also contributed to the screenplay.
Lot 219: A large collection of rare contact sheets of Marilyn Monroe in Let's Make Love
US$ 50,000 - 80,000 - €47,000 - 75,000
Twentieth Century-Fox, 1960. 134 contact sheets, in two sets bound at tops in clasps (one set totaling one-hundred and twenty-one sheets; the other, thirteen), each with twenty (though sometimes less) 2 3/4 x 1 3/4 in. black and white photographs, "Approved Set" inscribed on first sheet of smaller set in permanent marker, Advertising Code Administration "Approved" and "Disapproved" stamps on versos with dates in green and red ink, housed in a Kodak Photographic Paper box inscribed, "Monroe / Somethings [sic] Got to Give" (though the photographs are from Let's Make Love).
Taken throughout the production of Marilyn Monroe's penultimate film, there are approximately 2,700 individual black and white images in this collection. Monroe is pictured in almost every shot, though her costars Yves Montand, Tony Randall, Gene Kelly, Bing Crosby, and others are also prominently featured, as is director George Cukor. Most of the photographs were taken during filming, but there are also many candid, behind-the-scenes images. Monroe herself went through the contact sheets and crossed out dozens of images she didn't like, using a thick black or red ink pen, and sometimes crossing herself out so thoroughly that she couldn't be seen at all. Thankfully, she left hundreds of shots untouched.
