Als ein junger, unbekannter Fotograf 1959 das Angebot bekam, Marilyn Monroe exklusiv zu begleiten, konnte er sein Glück kaum fassen. Die Bilderserie wurde nie veröffentlicht – hier ist sie.

Manfred Linus Kreiner war ein deutscher Fotograf im Amerika der fünfziger bis achtziger Jahre – kein ganz Großer der Branche, und doch hatte er ein paarmal im Leben das Glück, Stars seiner Zeit zu treffen, und die Gabe, ihr Vertrauen zu gewinnen. So porträtierte er Henry Miller in Kalifornien, und 1961 begleitete er John F. und Jacqueline Kennedy auf ihrer Südamerikareise. Kreiners größter Coup war es wohl, drei Tage mit Marilyn Monroe zu verbringen, als einziger Fotograf in einem Hotel in Chicago.
Beim Skifahren hatte Kreiner, damals 30, den Pressemann der Monroe kennengelernt, auf einer Piste im Staate New York. Die beiden befreundeten sich, und schließlich bot der Pressemann Kreiner an, ihm jene drei Tage mit Marilyn zu verschaffen – exklusiv. Kreiner beschrieb die erste Begegnung in einem Tagebuch: »Nicht im Traum hätte ich mir vorgestellt, dass ein Skifreund mir die Gelegenheit verschaffen würde, im Frühling 1959 Marilyn Monroe zu treffen, mit ihr zu sprechen und sie zu fotografieren. Amerikas Superstar, sagte er mir, stelle nur drei Bedingungen. Die erste und wichtigste: Sie müsse mich mögen. Zweitens nehme sie sich das Recht, aus meinen Fotos diejenigen auszuwählen, die veröffentlicht würden, und – drittens – jedes Foto zu zerstören, das ihr nicht gefalle. Ich stimmte allen drei Bedingungen zu und brach nach Chicago auf. Dorthin flog Marilyn Monroe für drei Tage, um für ihren neuesten Kinofilm zu werben: Some like it hot. Um Massenaufläufe von Fans und Presseleuten zu vermeiden, wurde beschlossen, Marilyn solle inkognito reisen. Die Fluglinie American Airlines spielte mit, und nachdem alle anderen Passagiere auf dem O’Hare-Flughafen in Chicago die Maschine verlassen hatten, wurde diese in einen entfernten Hangar gerollt – dort wartete ich mit meiner Kamera. Nur ein paar Flughafenarbeiter waren ihr Publikum, als sie ausstieg.

«Möglicherweise schoss Kreiner schon in diesem Hangar seine ersten Bilder. Als dann die Monroe mit ihrer Entourage im Hotel eintraf, gab es eine Cocktailparty zu ihren Ehren. Nun war es Zeit für den jungen, wenig bekannten Fotografen, der Diva vorgestellt zu werden; der Moment, der über alles Weitere entscheiden würde. »Ich war natürlich sehr nervös und sagte mir, warte den richtigen Moment ab. Es kam anders. Marilyn selbst entdeckte mich in der wartenden Menge hinter einer Topfpalme. ›Was ist los mit Ihnen?‹, fragte sie, und ich küsste schnell ihre Hand. Bevor ich nach Amerika kam, war ich in Wien aufgewachsen, wo alle Herren den Damen die Hand küssen. Marilyn, das übliche Sodaglas mit ›Ginger Ale‹ in der anderen Hand, war überrascht und gerührt. In einer gebieterischen Geste legte sie ihren Arm um meine Schultern und sagte: ›I love Manfred.‹«
Den Handkuss, der die Situation und den Job rettete und Marilyn Monroe dahinschmelzen ließ, hatte Kreiner – im Rheinland 1929 geboren – zu seinem Glück nicht verlernt. In Wien hatte er nach dem Krieg Malerei studiert. In der Erinnerung von Freunden blieb er zeitlebens der deutsche Amerikaner von der wienerischen Art. Bald nach seiner Übersiedlung in die USA lernte er seine künftige Frau kennen. Die beiden heirateten kurz vor Weihnachten 1953 in New York. Ihr Mann habe damals Cartoons gezeichnet und für Zeitungen geschrieben, sagt Sally Kreiner.
In den sechziger Jahren repräsentierte er den Heinrich-Bauer-Verlag in den USA und war Mann der Zeitschrift Quick in New York, für die er Fotogeschichten einkaufte. Seine eigenen Bilder vertrieb er über die Agentur Black Star ins Ausland, die legendäre New Yorker Drehscheibe deutscher Emigranten der dreißiger Jahre, darunter berühmte Fotografen wie Robert Capa. Mit einer Leica habe er gearbeitet, erinnert sich Sally Kreiner, mit einer Nikon und einer Hasselblad – und an noch etwas: »Seinen Vornamen hatte ihm seine Mutter gegeben. Sie war eine große Bewunderin von Manfred von Richthofen gewesen, dem tollkühnen Jagdflieger des Ersten Weltkriegs, und so nannte sie ihren Sohn Manfred.« Nachdem der Mann, der den Vornamen des Roten Barons trug, Marilyn Monroes Zuneigung so charmant erobert hatte, legte sich seine Nervosität gegenüber dem Superstar. »Ich wurde sogleich in den Kumpel-Status erhoben. Das hieß, ich gehörte nicht nur zu ihrer Entourage, sondern ich war nun einer, mit dem sie plauderte«, schrieb er in sein Tagebuch.
»Marilyn«, fährt Kreiner fort, »besaß ›Radar‹. Ihre Zuneigungen und Abneigungen waren legendär in Hollywood. Sie hatte einen eisernen Willen, nach außen jedoch lächelte sie stets und warf mit ihren üblichen Chanel-No.-5-Bonmots um sich. Ihrer Entourage gegenüber war sie der schiere Terror. Unbeschreiblich. Niemand wusste, wann sie explodieren würde. Wenn sie in die Luft ging, blieb kein Stein auf dem anderen.« Kreiner beschreibt sie als Hyperperfektionistin. »In diesen drei Tagen lernte ich ihre zwei Seiten kennen. Schon bald stand ich in ihrem magischen Bann, zugleich lagen meine Nerven blank – es ging mir gerade so wie allen anderen, die um sie waren. Wir rauchten alle Kette. Marilyn kümmerte es nicht. ›In diesem irren Geschäft brauchen wir alle einen Schuss‹, sagte sie vollkommen ernst, ›ihr habt euren, ich habe meinen.‹ Das war das Signal für ihre Entourage, ihr ein großes Wasserglas voll Piper-Heidsieck-Champagner zu bringen. In ihrem Badezimmer stand ein großer Plastikeimer, gefüllt mit Eis und voller ungeöffneter Flaschen. Für jedes neue Glas, das sie verlangte, wurde eine neue Flasche geöffnet, sie bestand darauf. Jeder von uns durfte sich aus dem Champagnerreservoir frei bedienen.
« Dann waren die magischen drei Tage um, eine Ernte von 36 Bildern war eingefahren – und dabei blieb es. Manfred Linus Kreiners größter Erfolg, seine exklusive Serie von Marilyn Monroe in der Chicagoer Hotelsuite im Jahre 1959, wurde, bis auf einzelne Bilder, nie gezeigt. Er hatte sie dem deutschen Journalisten Hanno Pittner gegeben, mit der branchenüblichen Absprache, ein mögliches Abdruckhonorar 50 zu 50 zu teilen. Aber es kam nie dazu. Die Bilder gerieten in Vergessenheit. Kreiner selbst hat anscheinend auch nicht mehr versucht, sie zu veröffentlichen.
In der Zeit des Vietnamkrieges wagte er noch einmal etwas, er flog als Fotograf nach Saigon. Seine Rückreise, erzählt Sally Kreiner, verlief dramatisch. »Er aß nicht viel, aus Angst, krank zu werden, er wollte nur raus. Er ergatterte einen Platz in einem Flugzeug, es geriet unter Feuer, flog eine scharfe Kurve, um dem Beschuss auszuweichen, wurde aber getroffen und musste in Hawaii notlanden.«
Im April 2005 starb Manfred Linus Kreiner in Winter Haven, Florida, wo seine Witwe heute noch lebt, ziemlich genau 46 Jahre nach den drei irren Tagen in der Hotelsuite in Chicago.

Manfred Linus Kreiner war ein deutscher Fotograf im Amerika der fünfziger bis achtziger Jahre – kein ganz Großer der Branche, und doch hatte er ein paarmal im Leben das Glück, Stars seiner Zeit zu treffen, und die Gabe, ihr Vertrauen zu gewinnen. So porträtierte er Henry Miller in Kalifornien, und 1961 begleitete er John F. und Jacqueline Kennedy auf ihrer Südamerikareise. Kreiners größter Coup war es wohl, drei Tage mit Marilyn Monroe zu verbringen, als einziger Fotograf in einem Hotel in Chicago.
Beim Skifahren hatte Kreiner, damals 30, den Pressemann der Monroe kennengelernt, auf einer Piste im Staate New York. Die beiden befreundeten sich, und schließlich bot der Pressemann Kreiner an, ihm jene drei Tage mit Marilyn zu verschaffen – exklusiv.
