Lot 0948: MARILYN MONROE: HANDWRITTEN LEE STRASBERG NOTE
A personal motivational poem handwritten in pencil by Marilyn Monroe on Beverly Hills Hotel stationery.
An original note handwritten in pencil by Marilyn Monroe to her acting mentor Lee Strasberg.
In the note, Monroe writes: "Dear Lee, One of the most personally helpful things I've heard so far in my life was what you said in class Friday afternoon - it was helpful in that I feel as though I'm a little bit freer - also more - I can't think of any I mean by that more relaxed 2 and 2 don't necessarily make 4." Part of the note is crossed out by Monroe, but still legible.

Lot 0950: MARILYN MONROE: HANDWRITTEN "ON HOSPITAL GOWNS" POEM ON ENVELOPE
An envelope with a rhyming poem titled "On Hospital Gowns" written in pencil on the back by Marilyn Monroe, making light of the fact that hospital gowns do not cover her "derriere."
The full poem: "My bare, clarrie derriere, is out the air, in the air, when I'm not aware, aware, several, Handel Concertos, Vivaldi Concertos, Benny Goodman, my pair."
The envelope also contains a list of composers and musicians: "Beethoven/ Last 6-quartets/ Ravel-the Waltz/ Bartok-quartets of his."

Lot 0952: PERSONAL HANDWRITTEN ACTORS STUDIO CLASS NOTES
A sheet of Marilyn Monroe's personal notes from her acting classes with Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio in New York, NY, handwritten in pencil on stationery from The Towers of The Waldorf-Astoria in 1955 (Monroe took Actors Studio classes with Strasberg between April and September 1955).
The opening salutation and start of the letter "Dear Art" has been scratched out. The notes begin with Monroe quoting something said by Strasberg: "I want you all to know that this exercise went on for/ 1/2 hour and her concentration did not/ give way or slip once-and Marilyn there/ will be very few times ever on the/ stage where it will be/ necessary to keep/ such a concentration/ for one half hour/ straight." Monroe then asks herself, "Why did it/ mean so much to me."
On the back she continues to ruminate about class, writing, "Strasberg/ it makes me (him he said) feel badly (and sadly) for you that you do/ things out of fear/ You must start to do things out of strength-/ (my question: where do I get the strength)-he said-by not looking for strength/but only looking & seeking tecnical [sic] ways and means."
This presents a fascinating demonstration of how seriously Monroe took her formal acting training in New York.

Lot 0953: HANDWRITTEN ACTING EXERCISE DIALOGUE AND NOTES
A single sheet of lined yellow paper with dialogue and additional notes written out in pencil in Monroe's hand. This document was likely part of an acting exercise.
The dialogue reads:
"Where did he go? He told you I know he did/ If you'd only have given me a little longer - He was in love with me - we'd have been married you didn't want me to have him from the beginning/ you wouldn't let me wear those pretty things/ Even when I told you about the doll - you/ sent those people around/ He died! But he said/ he came back - Tell/ Me - tell me -."
The front and back of the page is then covered with small performance notes, including:
"The thought focus on partner not on word then let go of word"; "don't do with words & voice"; "Let go everything elastic keep the pick up lay on the horse"; and "to be as relaxed let go of mouth speech thought," among many others.

Of significance, a letter dated December 19 to Miller from acclaimed producer, director and screenwriter Elia Kazan wherein he provides feedback on The Misfits. "You've got the makings of a superb movie here. The last big sequence (Mustangs) can be a masterpiece. And its (sic) perfect for Huston." He goes on to write, "Perhaps it all suffers from not quite pointing to any definite ending. And to tell it all, I thought the girl a little too - well too a lot of things, too right, too often, too pure, too aware. But, on the whole damned good. I hope you work on it more before you start shooting." The letter is signed "Gadg," Kazan's nickname.

Lot 1021: SAMMY CAHN SIGNED 1960 PERSONAL NOTE
A short, personal note from composer Sammy Cahn to Marilyn Monroe, typewritten on Sammy Cahn letterhead and dated "14th June, 1960." Cahn has typewritten "ammy" and signed an "S" in pen to complete the signature. The note reads: "I can't tell you how flattered I was to be asked to your party. As I told you I was almost positive that you might have thought I was Van Heusen. I was so pleased that you knew he was out of town and that the invitation was intended for me. I had a marvelous time and if you ever give parties again, no matter where, don't forget your chum."
Cahn co-wrote the song "Let's Make Love" with James Van Heusen (mentioned in the note), sung by Monroe in George Cukor's film of the same name (Twentieth Century Fox, 1960), as well as several other featured musical numbers.

1956s - Recette Dinde et Farce

Pas d'ail
Levain
Pain français - tremper dans de l'eau froide, essorer, puis déchiqueter
Pour les abats de poulet - faire bouillir dans l'eau 5 à 10 minutes
Foie - cœur puis hacher
1 entier ou ½ oignon, hacher et persil / 4 branches de céleri, hacher ensemble en suivant les épices - mettre le romarin
Thym, laurier, origan, assaisonnement pour volaille, sel, poivre,
Fromage parmesan râpé, 1 poignée
1 / 2lb - 1 / 4lb moulu rond - mettre dans une poêle - brun (sans huile) puis mélanger les raisins secs 1 ½ tasse ou plus
1 tasse de hacher les noix (noix, châtaignes, arachides)
1 ou 2 œufs durs - mélanger ensemble

Préparer la volaille
Sel et poivre à l'intérieur du poulet ou de la dinde - à l'extérieur et beurre
Refermer les oiseaux avec des pinces mettre le poulet ou la dinde dans le four 350
Poulet rôti - 3 ou 4 lb ou plus
Cuit 30 min à 1 lb
Faire revenir le poulet ou le faisan (vinaigre, huile, oignon, épices) - laisser cuire dans son jus
Ajoutez un peu d'eau au fur et à mesure
½ verre de vinaigre - mis à moitié cuit
Cuit 2 heures
Mettre les pommes de terre
Champignon - bouton en conserve
Pois - frais

For the Stuffing
    No garlic
    Sourdough
    French bread – soak in cold water, wring out, then shred
    For chicken giblets – boil in water 5-10 mins
    Liver – heart then chop
    1 whole or ½ onion, chop & parsley / four stalk celery, chop together following spices – put in rosemary
    Thyme, bay leaf, oregano, poultry seasoning, salt, pepper,
    Grated Parmesan cheese, 1 handful
    1/2lb – 1/4lb ground round – put in frying pan – brown (no oil) then mix raisin 1 ½ cups or more
    1 cup chop nuts (walnuts, chestnuts, peanuts)
    1 or 2 hard boiled eggs – chopped mix together

To Prep the Bird
    Salt & pepper inside chicken or turkey – outside same and butter
    Sew up clamp birds put chicken or turkey in 350 oven
    Roasting chicken – 3or 4lbs or larger
    Cooks 30 min to 1lbs
    Brown chicken or pheasant (vinegar, oil, onion, spices) – let cook in own juice
    Add little water as you go
    ½ glass vinegar – put in when half done
    Cooks 2 hours
    Put potatoes
    Mushroom – button canned
    Peas – fresh

Dear Miss Monroe:

Pursuant to your requestto have your salary pro-rated over the balance of Option (a) of your contract, this will confirm our mutual understanding.
Under the provisions of your contract, Option (a) began on May 11, 1952, and will expire on May 10, 1953, covering a period of Fifty-Two (52) weeks, of which you are guaranted Forty (40) weeks salary at Seven Hundred Fifty Dollars ($ 750.00) per week, or a total of Thirty Thousand Dollars (V 30,000.00).
The remaining Twelve (12) weeks of the term represents the suspension period of which we have the privilege of taking you off the payroll, subject to the conditions imposed by the Screen Actors' Guild.
From May 11, 1952, the beginning of Option (a) of your contract, through May 31, 1952, is an elapsed period of Three weeks. During this period, you were paid Two (2) weeks and Three (3) days at your contract rate of Seven Hundred Fifty Dollars ($ 750.00) per week, or a total of One Thousand Eight Hundred Seventy-Five Dollars ($ 1,875.00). The other Three (3) days were layoff, for which no compensation was due. This leaves a guaranteed balance of Twenty-Eight Thousand One Hundred Twenty-Five Dollars ($ 28,125.00) to be paid over the remaining Forty-Nine (49) weeks of your term.
Pro-rating this balance over the remaining Forty-Nine (49) weeks, we will pay you Forty-Eight (48) weeks at Five Hundred Seventy-Four Dollars ($ 574.00) per week, a total of Twenty-Seven Thousand Five Hundred Fifty-Two Dollars ($ 27,552.00), and One (1) week at Five Hundred Seventy-Three Dollars ($ 573.00), a combined total of Twenty-Eight Thousand One Hundred Twenty-Five Dollars ($ 28,125.00) which together with the One Thousand Eight Hundred Seventy-Five Dollars ($ 1,875.00) already paid, equals Thirty Thousand Dollars ($ 30,000.00), the entire amount guaranteed in Option (a) of your contract.

It is understood that in the event your contract of employment with us is terminated prior to the expiration of the term described in Article First thereof, as said term may be extended, and as of the date of such tzrmination you have been compensated under the pro-rating arrangment hereinabove set forth in an amount which is in excess of the amount which would have been earned by you had you been compensated pursuant tothe provisions of Article Second of your above mentioned contract of employment, then and in such event, you agree, upon being requested so to do, to repay to us the amount of such excess which has been paid to you under said pro-rating arrangment.
Please understand that this arrangement is for your convenience only, and in no way affects your original contract, nor does it affect any additional monies due you according to the overtime provision or any other provision of the Agreement of the Screen Actors' Guild. If this is in accordance with your understanding of our arrangments, kindly confirm the same by affirming your signature below, under the word "Accepted" and return two copies to us. The original is for your records.

Lot 89001: A Marilyn Monroe Signed Black and White Photograph, Circa 1953.
An original print with a glossy finish, depicting the star in one of her most famous publicity headshots, signed in blue ballpoint ink on the center right side "To Rick, / It's a pleasure to / work with you, / Marilyn Monroe" -- 'Rick' being bit-part actor Dick Ryan (who did sometimes go by 'Rick') who worked in Hollywood from the 1940s to the 1980s; consigned directly by Ryan's family. (Please note there is a dirt smudge on the upper left side and there are very slight dents on the right side seen in raking light only but image and inscription are not affected.)

Lot 89002: A Marilyn Monroe Signed Black and White Photograph, Circa 1953.
An original print with a glossy finish, depicting the star in one of her well-known cheesecake publicity poses, signed in green fountain pen ink on the center right side "To Dick, / It's a pleasure to work with / you. / Marilyn Monroe" -- 'Dick' being bit-part actor Dick Ryan who worked in Hollywood from the 1940s to the 1980s; consigned directly by Ryan's family. (Please note the inscription is somewhat faded but it looks like the ink was probably running out as MM was signing it.)

Lot 89003: A Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio Signed Menu from Their Honeymoon, 1954.
From the famous Trader Vic's restaurant in Honolulu where the couple ate dinner during their quick stop while en route to Japan and Korea, signed in blue ballpoint ink on an interior page "The food was wonderful / Marilyn Monroe DiMaggio" and "Lefty O'Doul" [one of DiMaggio's baseball buddies who accompanied them on their trip]; further signed in the same ink on another page of the menu "Joe DiMaggio." (Please note the menu is somewhat wrinkled and yellowed due to age but Monroe's signature is still clear.)

Lot 89004: A Marilyn Monroe Group of Rare Black and White Snapshots, Circa 1947.
Six total, all original prints with a glossy finish; four taken the same day and two taken other days, all showing MM in an outdoor setting either alone or with Aviv Wardimon (who later changed his last name to 'Blackman'); according to his distant relatives who consigned this lot, he was a security guard at one of the movie studios (most probably 20th Century Fox) who evidently struck up a friendship with the then-starlet as these images seem to indicate; also included is one extra black and white snapshot of Wardimon with actor John Carroll (who is wearing western garb on a movie set) -- coincidentially, Monroe was living with Carroll and his wife at this time. (Please note there is handwriting in blue ink on the verso of some and a faint typed note on another.)

Lot 89005: A Marilyn Monroe Group of Rare Black and White Photographs, Circa 1947.
Three total, all original prints with a matte finish; all showing MM in an outdoor setting next to Aviv Wardimon (who later changed his last name to 'Blackman'); according to his distant relatives who consigned this lot, he was a security guard at one of the movie studios (most probably 20th Century Fox) who evidently struck up a friendship with the then-starlet as these images seem to indicate; also included is one extra black and white photograph of Wardimon with actor John Carroll (who is wearing a period tuxedo on a movie lot) -- coincidentially, Monroe was living with Carroll and his wife at this time. (Please note there is handwriting in blue or black ink or typed text on the verso of some; there is a small tear on the bottom margin of one; and sadly all were shot somewhat blurry.)

Six total, all original prints with a glossy finish, each depicting the then-starlet in typical of-the-era poses; also included is a postcard featuring a black and white image of MM and others on the front next to text reading in part "Official / Souvenir / Post Card / Postmasters / Convention / Los Angeles / October 12-16, 1947" -- evidently some PR stunt poor MM was forced to do in her salad days; consigned by the family of Aviv Wardimon (see two previous lots). (Please note one image has a slight 1" tear on the top margin.)

Lot 89007: A Marilyn Monroe Group of Rare Small Black and White Publicity Photographs, Circa 1947.
Nine total, all original prints with a glossy finish, each depicting the then-starlet wearing bathing suits in typical of-the-era cheesecake poses, some of which are quite uncommon; consigned by the family of Aviv Wardimon (see three previous lots). (Please note there is slight wrinkling and/or staining on a few.)

Lot 89008: A Marilyn Monroe Group of Black and White Never-Before-Seen Snapshots from Korea, 1954.
Six total, all original prints with a glossy finish, shot by a soldier on base; three depict the star in a bomber jacket and pants; three depict her on stage in her spaghetti-strapped dress; though similar to hundreds we've already seen, we have not seen these exact ones before!

Lot 89009: A Marilyn Monroe-Related Group of Black and White Film Stills from "Some Like It Hot." United Artists, 1959.
Eighteen total, all original prints with with either a glossy or semi-gloss finish; comprising five 11" x 14" ones and thirteen 8" x 10" ones; with thirteen showing Marilyn (either alone or with other cast members) and five showing people such as Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, and director Billy Wilder, among others. (Please note some photographs exhibit minor wear and curling at the edges.)

2) a check from 'Marilyn Monroe Productions, Inc.,' dated "July 14, 1955," to the shoemaker, interestingly signed in black fountain pen ink in the lower right corner "Milton H. Greene" [her short-lived business partner in MMP, Inc.];
and 3) another check from MMP, Inc., dated "Feb 3, 1956," written out to MM in the amount of "$404.30," also signed by Greene in blue ballpoint ink. (Please note there is a small hole in the upper center of the invoice and its original fold marks are still evident.)

Lot 89660: A Marilyn Monroe Collectible Outdoor Thermometer, Circa 1970s.
Oblong, made of tin, depicting the star from "The Seven Year Itch" though text reads "Some / Like / It / Hot!;" further text on the lower margin reads "Nostalgia Lane, Inc. New York, New York." (Please note there are rust stains throughout due to age.)

Lot 89661: A Marilyn Monroe Display Piece Related to "The Prince and the Showgirl." Warner Bros., 1957.
Featuring ten trimmed film cells from the beloved romantic comedy mounted in a shadow box around a miniature facsimile of the film's poster, with a placard below reading "Marilyn Monroe / 'The Prince and the Showgirl' / Limited Edition Filmcell #20 : 100." (Please note the glass covering the back of the display exhibits a diagonal crack going through the top-left corner.)

Lot 89662: A Marilyn Monroe "Life" Magazine, 1952.
An April 7, 1952 issue of the periodical featuring Monroe on the cover with the words "Marilyn Monroe / The Talk of Hollywood" to the left of the star; inside, a mostly-pictorial four-page story on Monroe begins on page 101. (Please note the magazine is toned, very fragile, with flaking to the edges of each page.)

Lot 89001: A Marilyn Monroe Unusual Inscribed 'Frame Glass' to Arthur Miller, Circa 1960.
A black and white photograph of the star circa 1956, looking wistful, housed in a black wooden frame with the glass signed by her in red wax pencil "I know when / I am not there / for you -- !!!" with her added line marks below forming what look like "X's" or "M's" or both but hard to decipher; consigned directly by the daughters of Aaron Frosch [Monroe's attorney] who said that when their father was handling MM's divorce from Arthur Miller, she gave Frosch a number of items she didn't want anymore, including this photograph which she evidently inscribed to Miller as an apology; interestingly, MM wrote this note with a colored wax pencil, the same kind she used to cross out images of herself on contact sheets that she didn't like; also intriguing to speculate about the photograph itself: it was likely a favorite of hers or Miller's and it was probably hanging somewhere in the couple's home where MM knew Miller would see her message on it. (Please note the inscription has changed to an orangish color and it's faded due to age.)

Lot 89002: A Marilyn Monroe Signed Document, 1952.
Two pages, typed, first page is on Twentieth Century Fox letterhead, dated "June 5, 1952," an eight paragraph agreement outlining the tedious details of the star's payment schedule at the studio, signed by her on the second page in blue fountain pen ink "Marilyn Monroe;" matted and framed in a pretty display featuring a black and white image of MM above brass-like plaques relaying general information about her.

Lot 89003: A Marilyn Monroe Signed Waiver, 1957.
One page, typed, dated "July 24, 1957," short document outlining how a meeting of Marilyn Monroe Productions was to be held at an office on Madison Avenue in NYC, signed by the star in blue foutain pen ink in the lower right corner "Marilyn Monroe" along with the signatures of two of her business associates; matted and framed next to three MM collectibles: a plastic "Marilyn Monroe Drawing Aid" (with its original backing), a piece of "Marilyn's Bedsheet!" with its original packaging, and a pocket knife featuring her 'Golden Dreams' nude image (but reversed); included with a LOA from JSA Authentication.

Lot 89004: A Marilyn Monroe (and Others) Signed Autograph Book Page, 1956.
Brownish-red leather cover, inside pastel pages inscribed in various colors of fountain pen or ballpoint ink (some to "Henry") by stars including Marilyn Monroe who signed in blue ballpoint ink and added "Warmest Regards" and (in alphabetical order): Ray Bolger, Bing Crosby, Xavier Cugat, Edward Duke of Windsor (who added "March 23rd 1956"), Hedda Hopper, President Herbert Hoover, Frank Sinatra, and President Harry Truman, among a few others who are illegible.

Lot 89005: A Marilyn Monroe Signed Program from the 'April in Paris Ball,' 1957.
Oversized, 15 pages filled with great 'of the era' advertisements plus text about the gala that the star attended with her husband [Arthur Miller] as did JFK, Jackie, and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor among other luminaries; signed in pencil upside down on the front cover "Marilyn Monroe Miller;" included with an undated handwritten note from a "Beverly Heath" who writes in part "Mrs. Marilyn Monroe Miller / autographed the evening's program which / I also attended / ...At the time I was a 'Rockette' at Radio City Music Hall / ...As I recall, Marilyn was / wearing a quite revealing (for the time) / low cut black sequined dress;" further included is a LOA from PSA/DNA. (Please note MMM's signature is somewhat faded now as it was written in pencil and the program is somewhat dog-eared and creased.)

Five total including:
1) an invoice from 'Hearst Metrotone News,' addressed to "Marilyn Monroe Productions," dated "November 21, 1956," in the amount of "$257.50" for "Coverage of arrival of Marilyn Monroe and Arthur / Miller at Idlewild Airport;"
2) a paycheck stub from 'Twentieth Century Fox,' dated "12-12-59," for "services of Marilyn Monroe;"
3) an invoice from 'The Waldorf-Astoria,' addressed to "Monroe Miss Marilyn," dated "Apr 19-25, 1955," outlining charges to her hotel room totaling "$75.80,"
4) a paycheck stub from 'Marilyn Monroe Productions, Inc.,' noting the gross earnings of "$7,142.86,"
and 5) a bank statement from 'Colonial Trust Company,' addressed to "Marilyn Monroe Productions, Inc.," dated "Sept 1-27, 1957," showing the various balances for the month;
all originally from the star's personal files.

Twenty total, all original prints with a glossy finish, all shot by one of the official Army photographers who had close access to the star; including: three that show MM wearing pants, a bomber jacket, and combat boots; seven that show MM in a black turtleneck, pants, and combat boots surrounded by others in the mess hall; three that show MM in a houndstooth-like print dress; six that show MM on stage wearing a sequined dress with spaghetti straps as she sings for the soldiers; and one that shows the outdoor stage and the audience before MM appears (so MM is not in this shot); though these images are all similar to many others we've seen before, these exact ones have never been viewed by the public before; consigned by the family of soldier who shot them 63 years ago.

Le 7 septembre 1958, pendant le tournage de "Certains l'aiment chaud", Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon et Tony Curtis signent des autographes à Susan, la fille de Tommy Plews, qui travaille au département artistique du film. Il faisait signer des autographes aux stars d'Hollywood dans son carnet pour sa fille sur les tournages de films dans lesquels il travaillait.

On September, 7, 1958, during the set of "Some Like it Hot", Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis sign autographs to Susan, the daughter of Tommy Plews, who works on the Art Department of the movie. He demanded autographs to Hollywood celebrities in his album for his young daughter on the set of various film on which he works for.

Lot 444: Movie Star News archive (1 million++) Hollywood and entertainment photographs.
Massive archive of (1 million++) primarily gelatin silver 8 x 10 in. single- and double-weight glossy and matte photographs, as well as RC prints, color photos, color glos stills, and color mini lobby cards. A New York City institution for over 70 years, Movie Star News began life in 1938 as a used bookstore owned by siblings Irving and Paula Klaw. The business struggled until one day Irving noticed customers surreptitiously tearing pictures out of movie magazines. Sensing an opportunity, the Klaws began selling used film publicity photos. Demand was so high that Irving reached out to studio publicity departments directly for additional stock, and discovered that promotional materials were routinely discarded after the run of a film. He was able to acquire as many original photos as he wanted for next to nothing, and often, studio negatives, from which he started producing his own prints. The Klaws stopped selling books and started a mail order photo business in addition to the storefront operation, effectively establishing Hollywood and entertainment photography as a field of collecting. Comprising Movie Star News store stock as well as vintage source material, the breadth and scope of this resulting archive is likely unparalleled anywhere, featuring material on nearly every important star and movie in the history of American film production, from pre-Hollywood silent film period through the Golden Age, New Hollywood, the blockbuster era, and beyond. Every category, genre, and subgenre is represented, including drama, comedy, action, adventure, romance, pre-code, crime, film noir, sci-fi, horror (Universal, Hammer, and more), war, western, pin-up, cheesecake, beefcake, exploitation, sexploitation, Blaxploitation, etc. Additionally featuring television, music, stage, and adult subjects, the archive contains a near-complete narrative of American pop culture throughout the 20th century. Consisting of a cast brass 11 x 4 in. presentation key to Warner Bros. Studios. The shield-shaped bow of the key features raised iconic “WB” letters synonymous with the studio. The key blade reads, in raised letters, “The Largest in the World” on one side and “Welcome to the Warner Bros Studio”, on the other. Keys like this one were presented to special guests, celebrities, and dignitaries visiting the studio. Exhibiting expected age, wear and patina. In vintage fine condition.

lot 869: Marilyn Monroe’s (Norma Jeane Dougherty) first signed studio contract with Twentieth Century-Fox with original screen test request signed by Ben Lyon.
The contract is 17 pages (8.5 x 11 in.), entitled “Agreement Between Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation And Norma Jeane Dougherty – Artist August 24, 1946” typed on the heavy stock contract folder bound with two brass brads. The document is an agreement, “That the producer employs the artist, and the artist enters the employ of the producer, to render his services exclusively to the producer, in the capacities and for the purposes herein described, for a term of Six (6) Months, commencing on the 26th day of August, 1946… the producer shall pay to the artist, as his entire compensation hereunder, the sum of One Hundred and Twenty-Five Dollars ($125.00) per week during the term of said employment…” On page 16, the future Marilyn Monroe signed in black ink, “Norma Jeane Dougherty” and was co-signed by a studio executive an a notary public. The final page was signed by Norma Jeane’s foster mother, Grace McKee, granting approval of the agreement for the 20-year-old minor. Accompanying the contract is the 1-page inter-office document, dated July 25, 1946, signed by Twentieth Century Fox executive (and former actor) Ben Lyon, written to Mr. George Wasson, stating in part: “Will you please draw up an optional contract on Norma Jeane Dougherty. We agree to make a test of her and then within ten (10) days after she completes the test, we agree to advise her whether or not we intend to exercise the option: 6 months – 20 out of 26 weeks -- $150.00.” Ben Lyon was a successful actor starring in the 1930 film Hell’s Angels, the film that brought Jean Harlow to prominence. After having met the young Norma Jeane on July 17, 1946, Lyon stated that she was “Jean Harlow all over again!” With this document, he arranged for Norma Jeane’s screen test and her subsequent contract with the studio. Lyon later advised the starlet to change her screen name to “Marilyn Monroe”. Also included is a carbon copy studio memo to Ben Lyon from George Wasson, dated October 25, 1946, stating that “Today is the last day for us to notify Norma Jeane Dougherty in the event we desire her to have any dental work done.” Contract is in fine condition; both the Lyon and dental memos have paper loss from the two-hole binder. An historic assemblage marking the genesis of the silver screen’s greatest star.

lot 870: Marilyn Monroe personally hand annotated script from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. (TCF, 1953)
Marilyn Monroe’s personally-used and annotated script from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. An incomplete script, being a block of revisions delivered by the production to Marilyn Monroe comprising 69 pages total (numbered 48 through 117, missing page 93) plus a pink title cover-sheet printed “26 November 1952, ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes’ (Revised Final Script…13 Nov. 1952),” plus “TO ALL SECRETARIES: Please place these ADDITIONAL PAGES at the back of your script of the above date. THIS IS IMPORTANT! Majority of the prompts for Marilyn’s character “Lorelei Lee” are circled variously in graphite and non-repro blue pencil, with approximately 22-pages annotated in various inks and pencil in Monroe’s hand with amendments and additions to the script and notes on how she proposes to deliver lines and portray Lorelei’s character, with several other pages showing line deletions and other demarcations. Highlights of notes include: pg. 56, when Lord Beekman finds Lorelei stuck in Malone’s porthole, next to Lorelei’s line “Oh yes--Tea with Lady Beekman. Why, she must of forgot. She didn’t show up,” with Monroe adding an alternative line, “Well, I just wanted to see the view. It’s better from here”; pg. 58, Monroe changes the line “Piggie, will you run down to my cabin and get my purse?” to “Maybe I should have that Sherry - will you get me some”; pg. 79, Monroe has written a note to herself in the margin “Feeling that feeds the words, know the lines, go over it inteligently [sic]”; pg. 92, also to herself, “sense the feeling with the body” plus several dialogue changes; pg. 94, again to herself, “grit my teeth and forget it must have my,” “all of feeling in my words,” and “build pull back, don’t stop mutual conflict between partners.” Also, the following page (95) although bearing no notations, features the scene for Monroe’s classic musical number “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend.” In generally very good condition, with expected handling wear, soiling, and creasing, and some small edge tears and damp-staining to cover page and a few internal margins throughout. Marilyn’s unique, revealing personal notations in this script reveal her private thought processes and fleeting self confidence. On set, she was haunted by her controlling acting coach Natasha Lytess, constantly striving for her approval and insisting on retakes even when director Howard Hawks had already approved. Co-star Jane Russell looked after Marilyn on set and was often one of the only people able to coax her out of her trailer during her bouts of self doubt. Despite her anxieties, it was the role of Lorelei Lee that first fabricated her ‘dumb blonde’ persona—a genius mixture of comedy and sexiness which Marilyn personified on screen, all the while taking her acting very seriously, as evidenced by her occasional heartfelt self-motivational notes in the margins. Monroe biographer Donald Spoto once said: “She put a twist on sexiness. It was not something wicked and shameful...it was something which was terribly funny. And Marilyn enjoyed it.” A remarkable and deeply personal artifact both from Marilyn’s aura imbued within it, and of Hollywood history in general.

The 1-page document (8.5 x 11 in.), dated and notarized from the State of New York on December 31, 1955, states in part: “I, Marilyn Monroe of New York, New York… for valuable consideration to me in hand paid and the receipt whereof I hereby acknowledge, have and do hereby and herewith release and forever discharge Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation… of and from all manner of action and actions, cause and causes of action, claims, demands… that I have ever had… pertaining to the production, distribution, exploitation or other matters or things relating to a certain motion picture photoplay entitled THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH.” Signed “Marilyn Monroe” in black ink. Minor staple holes on left margin. Overall, in fine condition.

Lot 873: (2) Marilyn Monroe signed documents and a block of (3) blank Marilyn Monroe checks.
A 1-page document (8.5 x 11 in.), undated, but retains “Received” stamp dated February 6, 1947. Sent by Marilyn to 20th Century-Fox Film Corporation to the attention of the legal department. In part: “This is to notify you that I am no longer being represented by the National Concert & Artists Corporation… I am now being represented by the Elsie Cukor Lipton Agency…[signed] Marilyn Monroe”. Contains clerical notes in both pencil and ink. Toning at lower half with tearing by two binder holes.
The second document is the second page of a two-page document (page one is missing), dated January 16, 1952 involving Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation and RKO Radio Pictures, Inc., pertaining to advertisement release for Marilyn Monroe in promoting “Jantzen Play Suites, Play Clothes and Swim Suits”. Signed “Marilyn Monroe” in blue ink, and co-signed by a Twentieth Century-Fox representative. Staple holes at top, pronounced wrinkling and a 3.75 x 1.25 in. portion clipped from the document.
Included with the documents is a block of (3) unused “Marilyn Monroe” printed checks from her City National Bank, Beverly Hills branch (checks numbered 1950 – 1952). Checks and attached stubs are in fine condition.

Lot 874: Marilyn Monroe signed advertising release for House of Westmore Cosmetics.
The 1-page document (8.5 x 13.5 in.), dated July 3, 1952 from Los Angeles, California, states in part: “The undersigned, Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation, a New York corporation, hereby gives and grants to House of Westmore, the non-exclusive right to utilize the name and likeness of Marilyn Monroe… Said name and/or likeness shall be used only by House of Westmore in connection with its product Cosmetics in the following manner: Newspapers, magazines, window and counter displays, point of sale material.” Signed “Marilyn Monroe” in black ink, and co-signed by representatives of Twentieth Century-Fox and House of Westmore. Minor paper loss from the binder at upper edge; minor chip at bottom edge not affecting signature.

Lot 875: Studio letter warning Marilyn Monroe of her breach of contract for taking off shooting days to participate in President Kennedy’s Birthday Celebration. (1962)
Vintage original 2-page letter on Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation letterhead, dated May 16, 1962, addressed to Marilyn Monroe Productions, Inc. In part: “…the services of Miss Marilyn Monroe in the now current employment period commenced on March 6, 1962 in the motion picture tentatively entitled ‘Something’s Gotta Give’… Whereas said motion picture is now in the process of principal photography and is uncompleted… Miss Monroe has advised the executives of the undersigned corporation… that she intends to absent herself from Producer’s studio and from Los Angeles, California, at twelve noon, May 17, 1962, for the purpose of attending a social function being held outside of the State of California, and to continue said absence for the reminder of the said calendar week… Now, therefore, please be advised that said announced action on the part of Miss Monroe constitutes a refusal by her to render services… said action of Miss Monroe will result in serious loss and material damage to the undersigned corporation… [the studio may] be relieved of any of its obligations in respect to the photoplay in which Miss Monroe is now rendering…” Signed “Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation” by Frank H. Ferguson, its Assistant Secretary. Included with original registered mail transmittal envelope, postmarked May 16, 1962, with attached studio slip with stamp indicating return date of May 17, 1962 with notation that the letter was refused and returned. Before shooting had begun, Monroe received approval from producer Henry Weinstein for her to perform on May 19th for President Kennedy’s birthday celebration at Madison Square Garden. Despite the agreement, Marilyn’s protracted health issues had delayed production and studio brass ultimately decided to release her from the picture on June 8th.

A Marilyn Monroe signed settlement contract between Monroe and Irving Stein following the departure of Stein from Marilyn Monroe Productions, Inc. The contract is dated February 19, 1959, and signed on the fourth page by Monroe, Stein, and their respective attorneys. The final page is cut down from its original size and now measures 7 1/2 by 8 inches. According to the settlement, Monroe agreed to pay Stein $33,000 to end their relationship and any ownership interests Stein once held in Marilyn Monroe Productions, Inc. Additional notes and initials within the document not believed to be in Monroe's hand.

A script titled Something's Got To Give dated March 14, 1963, with a shoot index dated March 25, 1963. The 1962 production of this film ended abruptly and was recast and retitled as Move Over, Darling (20th Century, 1963). This script belonged to Ad Schaumer, assistant director of Move Over, Darling.
