Seventeen different vintage color transparencies and black-and-white negatives comprising 3 color 5 x 7 in. and 5 color 4 x 5 in. transparencies and 5 black-and-white 5 x 7 in. and 4 black-and-white 4 x 5 in. negatives, of Norma Jeane Dougherty (née Marilyn Monroe) wearing a cowgirl outfit and a tennis outfit, all in glassine sleeves, some with "Paul Parry" printed stickers and identifying numbers. Please note that the black-and-white negatives are shown as positives for the catalog.
When Norma Jeane Dougherty began modeling in 1945 after being discovered working at Radioplane Company, local photographers could not get enough of her. Before long, she was appearing in advertisements and on magazine covers. In the advancing years after she became Marilyn Monroe and to this day, well-known photographers such as Bruno Bernard, Joseph Jasgur, and Andre de Dienes published the many photos they took of Norma Jeane during her modeling days, but Paul Parry's photographs remained elusive until now; in fact, only one advertisement–for Mission orange drink–contains his photo credit, the advertisement for which some of the photos from this lot were taken but were used later when she was Marilyn Monroe. In his photos of Norma Jeane with a tennis racket, Monroe fans will immediately recognize the white short overalls that she wore both in her personal life and in many of her early modeling sessions with various photographers, evidence of her lack of money at the time. These rare, never-before-seen images are offered here for the first time, with copyright. Accompanied by the original Mission orange drink ad (in rough shape), an original "Paul Parry" 5 x 7 in. monogrammed envelope with "Marilyn Monroe" typed to center, an original 4.5 x 6.5 in. paper file tab with "Norma Jean Dougherty" handwritten in pencil to top, and an original 1940s pamphlet promoting Paul Parry's photography business.

Lot 1250: A Marilyn Monroe signed photographer's release from her early modeling days

Photographer's release document signed ("Norma Jeane Dougherty") to lower right, dated April 25, 1946, on "Paul Parry / Photographer" letterhead, indicating that Monroe is receiving $15.00 for her modeling work and waives all rights to the photographs. The client name, "Evers Whyte," is handwritten to upper left corner, and Parry's letterhead address is crossed out and his Sunset Blvd. address typed underneath. In 1946, Monroe was in the middle of divorcing her first husband Jim Dougherty, to whom she had been married for 4 years, and was working diligently to further her modeling career. According to Emmeline Snively, who put her under contract to the Blue Book Modeling Agency, "She was a clean, shining, pleasant, expressive-faced little girl, the girl-next-door type." 5.5 x 8.5 in.

Model's paper invoice signed ("Norma Jeane Dougherty") at bottom, dated April 25, 1946, indicating that photographer Paul Parry is to be billed $15.00 for Norma Jeane's modeling work on a job for Buffums' department store. In late 1945, Monroe signed a contract with Emmeline Snively's Blue Book Modeling Agency and by early 1946 was also posing for pinup painter Earl Moran; this April 1946 invoice with Paul Parry indicates it was one of her earliest modeling jobs. She quickly became one of Blue Book's most requested models because of her fresh-faced naturalness in front of the camera. 3.25 x 5 in.

Large-format color photograph of Marilyn Monroe in a negligee, reading a book in her apartment. As a friend of the photographer Philippe Halsman, Harold Lloyd was a witness and participant in the famous photographic session which resulted in Monroe's first Life magazine cover of April 7, 1952. After Monroe made a wardrobe change, Lloyd shot a series of sensual color photographs of her lounging about her apartment. Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.

Large-format color photograph of Marilyn Monroe relaxing by the pool at Harold Lloyd's massive estate, "Greenacres," while wearing a bathing suit from her film, How to Marry a Millionaire (1953). What looked like an ordinary photo shoot at Lloyd's estate was later revealed to be an instance of Monroe helping out the government by shooting film footage which encouraged government employees to keep confidential what they knew about atomic bomb testing in the Pacific, Nevada, and Mexico. To this day, only seconds of that footage have been revealed, along with these photographs. Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.

Lot 1254: A Marilyn Monroe photo by Frank Worth

Silver gelatin photograph, edition no. 14/195, with photographer's estate blind stamp in margin recto, printed later. Taken during a photo session with Sammy Davis, Jr. during the shooting of How to Marry a Millionaire (1953), this natural candid of Monroe is evidence of the relaxed atmosphere which attended photographer Frank Worth's shoots and made his pictures so unique. Worth had an impressive body of work dating from the 1930s to the 1960s, but most of it was not released until after his death. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from the photographer's estate. 16 x 20 in.

Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from the photographer's estate.

Monroe is depicted in her element as her entourage, including makeup artist Allan "Whitey" Snyder and hair stylist Sydney Guilaroff, attends to her every need. Taken on the set of Let's Make Love (1960), Bryson was able to capture the chaotic atmosphere that often accompanied Monroe when making films. John Bryson gifted this print to the consignor's grandfather, who was an amateur photographer and friend of Bryson.

The happy shot chronicles the calm before the storm; Monroe would engage in an affair with her co-star, Yves Montand, during filming and effectively doom her marriage. John Bryson gifted this print to the consignor's grandfather, who was an amateur photographer and friend of Bryson. 30 x 40 x 0.5 in.

Avec Buster Keaton et Charlie Chaplin, il fait partie des comiques les plus inventifs du cinéma muet américain. Aussi habile à imaginer des gags visuels qu'à réaliser d'incroyables cascades – souvent grâce à d'ingénieux trucages –, Harold Lloyd a connu la célébrité à l'écran plus de deux décennies durant, jusqu'à l'avènement du parlant. Né en 1893 dans le Nebraska, l'acteur a débuté, sans le sou, comme figurant dans les studios californiens avant de commencer, au début des années 1910, une fructueuse collaboration avec le producteur-réalisateur Hal Roach, puis de s'en émanciper en créant son propre studio. Régalant le public avec les pitreries de son personnage à lunettes, le comédien est notamment entré dans la mémoire collective avec la scène, où, bravant le vide, on le voit s'accrocher à l'aiguille d'une horloge (Monte là-dessus, 1923). Oscar d'honneur pour l'ensemble de sa carrière en 1953, propriétaire de l'une des plus luxueuses propriétés de Beverly Hills, Harold Lloyd a tenu la vedette de plus de deux cents films, du court au moyen métrage, avant de se consacrer avec le plus grand sérieux à d'autres hobbies, comme le bowling et la photographie 3D. A small frame with Art Deco style matte containing a vintage oval portrait of a woman circa 1900 based upon hairstyle. This image could possibly be of a young Ana Lower, whom Marilyn Monroe referred to as Aunt Ana, an important mother figure in her life. Lower was born Edith Ana Atchinson in Los Angeles in 1880. Behind this image in the same frame were found two small black and white portraits of Monroe's first husband, Jim Dougherty, in his Merchant Marine uniform.

A 1942 Chieftain yearbook that includes Marilyn Monroe. Monroe's picture is on page 48 under the name Norma Baker. Monroe attended University High School in Los Angeles as a tenth grader until February, when she dropped out to marry Jim Dougherty. This yearbook belonged to Barbara Abston, also a tenth grade student. The book has numerous inscriptions to Abston.

A 1941 Ralph Waldo Emerson Junior High School class photograph. The original vintage panoramic photograph is inscribed by a number of students on verso. Some inscriptions read "To Norma." The front of the photograph is marked "Belongs to Norma Jeane Baker." Monroe can be seen in the photograph in the seventh row from the bottom, and the 15th person from the right. Housed in a frame with a reproduction of the photograph at top and the reverse of the photograph at bottom. The frame is double-sided with a glazed window in the back to show the front of the photograph.

In February 1942, at age 16, Monroe dropped out of University High School to marry Jim Dougherty.

A note attached to the lower portion of the calendar does identify the model as Monroe, reading in part, “This Champion Calendar was posed by Marilyn Monroe. ...Since that time she has received much publicity in the daily newspapers and national magazines and has been [sic] starred in two movies.” The calendar advertises San Fernando Valley Motor. Two black and white double-exposure photographs of Marilyn Monroe (circa 1946), both having photographer’s stamp on verso. Approximately 11 by 14 inches each. Reference: Similar photographs from this session can be seen on pages 210-232 of de Dienes’ book Marilyn (Taschen, 2002). De Dienes met 19-year-old aspiring model Norma Jeane Dougherty in 1945 after requesting a model from her agents at Blue Book Modeling for a then upcoming project. They immediately bonded and traveled together through the western states to capture Norma Jeane in various natural settings. During that trip, they became romantically involved and were briefly engaged. After their romance ended amicably, de Dienes continued to photograph Norma Jeane and well into her career as Marilyn Monroe. The chemistry between the two was undeniable; his work captured some of the finest images of the star. Many of the photographs can be seen in his book titled Andre de Dienes / Marilyn (Taschen, 2002).

A 16mm reel of behind-the-scenes footage shot on the set of The Misfits (Seven Arts, 1961). The reel comes with the original envelope that is addressed to Marilyn Monroe from United Artists. Notes on the envelope read "16mm publicity" and "The Misfits/ film for Foreign Screening." Accompanied by a document from UA titled “The Making of ‘The Misfits’/ (Narration for a 20-minute featurette)” with a personal note to Monroe affixed to the cover page.
The film begins with Monroe arriving in Reno, Nevada, with husband Arthur Miller and being received at the airport, then driving through Reno. The next scene appears to be a press conference with Monroe and co-stars Clark Gable, Montgomery Clift, Eli Wallach, Kevin McCarthy, and Thelma Ritter, director John Huston, and Miller.
The approximately 19-minute film goes on to show a variety of behind-the-scenes activities of the cast and crew beginning with the filming of Monroe and Ritter in a street scene that was cut from the final version of the film.
Other segments include Monroe at Harrah's Casino taking refreshment with Ritter, Huston, and a dog Monroe attempts to feed; the cast on location; street filming in Reno with the cast in a vehicle followed by a parade of observers; Monroe signing autographs; Monroe greeting and getting on a horse; shots of the cast being filmed riding together; aerial images of the set; a baseball game being played on set; a football being tossed on set with Miller and Huston joining in the game; and Monroe lounging with two other women on the hood of a car. The last part of the film shows the filming of a Misfits scene where Monroe is swimming and playing with a dog in the water. The very last image is of Monroe running from the water to embrace Gable. No audio. Accompanied by a DVD copy of the film.

An original vintage contact sheet of Marilyn Monroe photographs taken by Lawrence Schiller on the set of Something’s Got to Give (20th Century, 1962). The contact sheet was given by Schiller to Monroe who folded it in half before returning it to the photographer. Twelve of the images show Monroe in her role as Ellen Wagstaff Arden with actor Robert Christopher Morley, who played her son in the uncompleted film. A set of 13 original vintage Marilyn Monroe negatives and transparencies taken by photographer Harold Davidson and sold with copyright. Davidson was an Air Force photographer. In 1953 Marilyn Monroe posed for publicity photographs at Greenacres, the home of actor and photographer Harold Lloyd. It was there that Davidson took these photographs. The images show Monroe reclining on a lounge chair poolside. There are seven black and white negatives and six color transparencies shot on Kodak Safety Film. Each image comes with an individual copyright.

01/1952, Beverly Carlton Hotel - Séance LIFE, Jour 1: En robe blanche par Halsman & Lloyd

Quand le photographe Philippe Halsman rencontre Marilyn Monroe (sans doute en fin d'année 1951), il remarque qu'elle a beaucoup changé depuis la dernière fois où il l'avait vu (il l'avait photographiée trois ans auparavant en 1949 pour le magazine Life - voir Life 1949 ); elle a pris de l'assurance, et Halsman la découvre sous un autre angle: il la trouve drôle, spirituelle, bienveillante, intelligente et très sexy. Par pure coïncidence, le journaliste de Life, Stanley Flink, le contacte trois semaines plus tard pour qu'Halsman se charge d'un reportage photographique en vue d'être publié dans le magazine et que Marilyn en fasse la couverture (voir Life 7 avril 1952 ). Après avoir contacté son agent, Marilyn sera disponible un jour et demie pour la séance et Halsman souhaite que cela se passe chez elle: la séance aura donc lieu dans son appartement au Beverly Carlton Hotel.
Pour son reportage photographique, Halsman scénarise la séance dont le but est de montrer au public la sensualité totale de Marilyn Monroe, à travers même ses gestes du quotidien (parler, marcher, s'allonger, manger) et donc à travers diverses situations et prises de vues. Philippe Halsman est accompagné de son assistant John Baird et de Stanley Flink, envoyé par Life pour superviser le shooting.
Pour le premier jour de séance, le photographe Harold Lloyd, qu'Halsman avait rencontré la veille chez Lloyd et qu'il a convié à participer à la séance avec Marilyn après avoir été impressionné par ses photographies couleur en 3 dimensions, est présent. Il est venu avec son appareil photo et va ainsi photographier les coulisses de cette séance en prenant des photos en couleur et même en 3D.

When photographer Philippe Halsman meets Marilyn Monroe (probably at the end of 1951), he notices that she has changed a lot since the last time he saw her (he had photographed her three years earlier in 1949 for Life magazine - see Life 1949 ); she has gained confidence, and Halsman sees her from a different perspective: he finds her funny, witty, benevolent, intelligent and very sexy. By pure coincidence, Life journalist Stanley Flink contacts him three weeks later so that Halsman could take charge of a photographic report to being published in the magazine and that Marilyn would be in cover (see Life 7 avril 1952 ). After contacting her agent, Marilyn will be available for a day and a half for the session and Halsman wants it to happen at her home: the session will so take place in her apartment at the Beverly Carlton Hotel.
For her photographic report, Halsman scripts the session whose goal is to show to the public the total sensuality of Marilyn Monroe, even through her everyday gestures (talking, walking, lying down, eating) and therefore through various situations and shootings. Philippe Halsman is accompanied by his assistant John Baird and Stanley Flink, sent by Life to supervise the shootings.
For the first day of the session, the photographer Harold Lloyd, whom Halsman has met at Lloyd's home the day before and whom he invited to participate in the session with Marilyn after being impressed by his 3-dimensional color photographs, is present. He comes with his camera and take pictures behind the scenes of this session, taking photos in color and even in 3D.

The White Tight Dress Sitting

Le premier jour de la séance photos en janvier 1952, Philippe Halsman, John Baird, Stanley Flink (et on imagine Harold Lloyd), attendent devant le Beverly Carlton Hotel de Marilyn Monroe. Absente, elle arrive en retard au volant de son cabriolet Pontiac, vêtue d'un blue jeans.
Halsman découvre l'intérieur modeste de sa chambre: un appartement de taille moyenne, avec une grande pièce où se trouve un grand lit ressemblant à un canapé, des étagères contenant beaucoup de livres et de disques, et du matériel de gymnastique à l'entrée (l'une des citations célèbres de Marilyn provient d'une remarque du photographe: quand Halsman lui demande pourquoi elle a des haltères, Marilyn lui répond en soupirant: "Je combats la gravité !").

La séance photos prend place, tel qu'il le racontera (dans le magazine Photography de juin 1953 ): "J'ai décidé de commencer par essayer la photo de couverture. Je devais d'abord trouver la robe. Marilyn a ouvert son placard et j'ai découvert à ma grande surprise que l'une des raisons pour lesquelles Monroe était si peu vêtue était qu'elle avait si peu à porter. Elle dépensait manifestement plus d'argent en livres et disques qu'en robes. Il n'y avait pas de fourrures dans sa garde-robe et seulement quelques robes de soirée. J'ai choisi la robe moulante blanche, et Marilyn l'a mise [nb: cette robe blanche de crêpe est une création de la styliste américaine Ceil Chapman]. Il y avait un énorme arc sur la hanche gauche. J'expliquai à Marilyn que le nœud dépréciait la robe, qu'en règle générale les lignes simples d'une robe étaient plus élégantes. Marilyn, après m'avoir écouté avec la même attention qu'un élève écoutant l'explication de son professeur sur un nouveau théorème algébrique, prit ses ciseaux et coupa l'arc.
Alors qu'elle était dans la salle de bain en train de refaire son maquillage (j'insistais pour qu'elle ne porte pas plus que du rouge à lèvres et du mascara), je réfléchissais à la façon dont elle devrait poser (...) J'ai emmené Marilyn dans un coin et j'ai mis mon appareil photo devant elle (...) Il aurait été inutile de se concentrer sur le visage de Monroe, car elle utilise son corps (pour jouer) plus que toute autre actrice hollywoodienne. (...) Flink s'est placé près de l'appareil et a commencé à complimenter et à taquiner Monroe. J'ai fait semblant d'être très jaloux de lui et nous avons eu une bataille verbale enflammée, tous deux se disputant sans vergogne les faveurs de Marilyn. Entourée de trois hommes admiratifs, elle souriait, flirtait, gloussait et se tortillait de plaisir. Pendant l'heure où je l'ai gardée coincée, elle s'est amusée royalement, et j'ai pris entre 40 et 50 photos - pas les expressions courantes qu'elle donne habituellement aux photographes.
Pourquoi ai-je pris autant de photos, au lieu de me contenter que de quatre ou cinq ? Je photographie lorsque l'expression semble significative, mais je ne sais jamais si le moment suivant ne produira pas une expression encore plus gratifiante. (...) le sujet néglige l'importance d'être photographié et crée parfois une immunisation complète contre le cliquetis constant de l'obturateur. (...) J'ai été extrêmement heureux de voir plus tard que les éditeurs de Life avaient choisi comme couverture la photo prise à cet instant décisif."

On the first day of the photoshoot in January 1952, Philippe Halsman, John Baird, Stanley Flink (and we imagine Harold Lloyd), wait in front of Marilyn Monroe's Beverly Carlton Hotel. Absent, she arrives late at the wheel of her Pontiac convertible, dressed in blue jeans. Halsman discovers the modest interior of his room: a medium-sized apartment, with a large room with a large sofa-like bed, shelves with lots of books and records, and gym equipment at the entrance. (one of Marilyn's famous quotes comes from a remark by the photographer: when Halsman asks her why she has dumbbells, Marilyn responds with a sigh: "I'm fighting gravity !").
The photoshoot takes place, as he will tell (in magazine Photography from June 1953 ): "I decided to begin by trying for a cover picture. First I had to find the dress. Marilyn opened her closet and I found to my surprised that one of the reasons why Monroe wore so little was that she had so little to wear. She obviously was spending more money on books and records than on dresses. There were no furs in her wardrobe and only a couple of evening gowns. I selected the white slinky one, and Marilyn put it on [nb: this white crepe gown is a creation of the american stylist Ceil Chapman]. It had an enormous bow on the left hip. I explained to Marilyn that the bow cheapened the gown, that as a rule simple lines in a dress were more elegant. Marilyn, after listening to me with the attention of a pupil listening to a teacher's explanation of a new algebra theorem, took her scissors and cut off the bow.
While she was in the bathroom overhauling her makeup (I insisted that she not to wear more than lipstick and mascara), I was thinking of the way she should pose. (...) I led Marilyn to a corner and put my camera in front of her. (...) It would have been wasteful to concentrate on Monroe's face, since she uses her body (for acting) more than any other Hollywood actress. (...) Flink placed himself near the camera and started to compliment and to tease Monroe. I pretended to be very jealous of him and we had a fiery verbal battle, both unabashedly competing for Marilyn's favor. Surronded by three admiring men, she smiled, flirted, giggled, and wriggled with delight. During the hour I kept her cornered she enjoyed herself royally, and I took between 40 and 50 pictures - not of the stock expressions she usually gives to the photographers.
Why did I take so many pictures, instead of being satisfied with four or five ? I shoot when the expression seems significant, but I never know whether the next moment might not produce and even more rewarding expression. (...) the subject disregard the importance of being photographed, and creates sometimes a complete immunization against the constant clicking of the shutter. (...) I was extremely happy to see later that the Life editors had selected as the cover the picture made at that climactic instant."

Cette séance photo reste célèbre par l'un des clichés qui a fait la première couverture de Life consacrée à Marilyn Monroe. Les yeux mi-clos et la bouche entr'ouverte sacrèrent Marilyn, âgée de 26 ans, la star et déesse de l'érotisme.
Philippe Halsman: "Pour Marilyn, ce fut probablement l'histoire du magazine la plus importante de sa carrière (...) bien que l'effet n'ait pas été d'une immédiateté spectaculaire, cette histoire a convaincu la Twentieth Century-Fox qu'au lieu d'une simple starlette avec des possibilités, ils avaient en elle une étoile de première grandeur (...) Pour moi, ce n'était qu'une histoire de routine qui a abouti à ma 54ème couverture de Life."

This photo session remains famous as one of the shots was the first cover of Life dedicated to Marilyn Monroe. Half-closed eyes and opened mouth consecrated Marilyn, 26 years old, as the star and goddess of eroticism.
Philippe Halsman: "For Marilyn this was probably the most important magazine story in her carrer. (...) athough the effect was not of spectacular immediacy, this story did convince Twentieth Century-Fox that instead of a mere starlet with possibnilities, they had in her a star of the first magnitude. (...) For me it was only a routine story which resulted in my 54th Life cover."

Le cinéaste et photographe amateur Harold Lloyd a été convié par Philippe Halsman à se joindre à la séance photos. Lloyd photographie ainsi les coulisses de la séance, où on y voit Halsman donnant à Marilyn les directives de poses à prendre, et l'assistant John Baird qui peaufine les réglages de l'objectif.
Filmmaker and amateur photographer Harold Lloyd was invited by Philippe Halsman to join the photoshoot. Lloyd thus photographs the backstage of the session, where Halsman is seen giving Marilyn the directives poses to be taken, and assistant John Baird who fine-tunes the lens settings.

Premier jour de la séance photos de Marilyn Monroe avec le photographe Philippe Halsman fin janvier 1952 chez elle, dans son appartement au Beverly Carlton Hotel pour Life Magazine (voir Life 7 avril 1952 ).
Pour cette deuxième séance photos, Philippe Halsman est accompagné de son assistant John Baird, du publicitaire de Life Stanley Flink, et d'Harold Lloyd qui, invité par Halsman, va photographier les coulisses de la séance à travers des photographies en couleur et en 3 dimensions.

Negligee Sitting

Après avoir photographié Marilyn en robe blanche (voir la séance En robe blanche ), Philippe Halsman s'attèle à une autre mise en situation pour Marilyn: la photographier habillée en lingerie. Convenu à l'avance avec Marilyn et son publicitaire de la Fox Roy Craft, ce dernier avait fait parvenir une dizaine de déshabillés chez Marilyn. C'est Halsman qui sélectionne les tenues puis il réfléchit au lieu où il placera Marilyn.

After having photographed Marilyn in a white dress (see the session In White Dress ), Philippe Halsman tackles another scenario for Marilyn: photographing her dressed in lingerie. Agreed in advance with Marilyn and her Fox advertiser Roy Craft, the latter had sent about ten negligee to Marilyn. It is Halsman who selects the outfits then he thinks about where he will place Marilyn.

Philippe Halsman racontera (dans le magazine Photography de juin 1953 ) comment il a trouvé ses idées et ses impressions: "Ma curiosité a été éveillée par la seule photographie dans la pièce. À ma grande surprise, j'ai reconnu le visage d'Eleonora Duse. Marilyn a-t-elle affiché cette image juste pour impressionner les intellectuels itinérants ? J'ai posé quelques questions et j'ai été surpris de découvrir que Marilyn en savait non seulement beaucoup sur elle, mais que la Divine Duse était sa grande idole. (...) J'ai décidé d'inclure la photo de Duse. Il y avait un tourne-disque sur l'étagère. Marilyn, en déshabillé transparent, s'y adossa, écoutant avec une rêverie haletante un disque. Son derrière pointait vers le visage immortel de la Duse. Pour moi, ce n'était pas un sacrilège. C'était mon commentaire ironique sur le changement de valeurs dans notre civilisation."

Philippe Halsman will tell (in the magazine Photography de juin 1953 ) how he found his ideas and his impressions: "My curiosity was aroused by the only photograph in the room. To my surprise I recognized the face of Eleonora Duse. Did Marilyn display this picture just to impress itinerant intellectuals ? I asked a few questions and was startled to find that Marilyn not only knew a lot about her, but that the Divine Duse was her great idol. (...) I decided to include Duse's photograph. There was a record player on the bookshelf. Marilyn, in a transparent negligee, leaned against it, listening with breathless dreaminess to a record. Her derrière was pointing toward Duse's immortal face. To me it was no sacrilege. It was my ironic comment on the shift of values in our civilization."

Pink Negligee

Le photographe s'étonne aussi de l'aménagement: "Les étagères de Marilyn étaient pleines des livres les plus disparates - sur la religion, la science, l'histoire, la psychologie et les traductions de classiques français, russes et allemands. Cela aussi était surprenant et une bonne occasion de faire une image éducative. Ma photo suivante montrait la magnifique blonde, dans son déshabillé transparent, assise avec un livre sur ses genoux, travaillant avec nostalgie sur son développement intellectuel. C'était vraiment inspirant. (...) C'était la dernière photo du premier jour."

The photographer is also surprised by the layout: "Marilyn's bookshelves were full of the most disparate books -about religion, science, history, psychology, and translations of French, Russian, and German classics. That too was startling, and a good opportunity to make and educational picture. My next photograph showed the gorgeous blonde, in her transparent negligee, sitting with a book in her lap, wistfully working on her intellectual development. It was truly inspirationnal. (...) This was the last picture of the first day."

Philippe Halsman raconte: "Plus tard, entre deux interminables changements vestimentaires, elle apparut dans un négligé à demi transparant. Je la complimentai de ne pas avoir besoin de soutien-gorge. 'Mais, Phlippe', m'expliqua-t-elle, 'je vous ai déjà dit que je me bats contre la pesanteur'."

Philippe Halsman recounts: "Later, between two endless changes of dress, she appeared in a half-transparent negligee. I complimented her on not needing a bra. 'But, Phlippe', she explained to me, 'I have already told you that I am fighting against gravity'. "

1953 Marilyn à GreenAcres par Harold Lloyd

Marilyn Monroe devant le domicile de l'acteur Harold Lloyd, qui dispose d'une immense villa baptisée GreenAcres. Harold photographie ici Marilyn à son arrivée, le jour du tournage de la publicité pour Coca-Cola qui aura lieu près de la piscine de la villa.

1953, Marilyn en tournage à GreenAcres

Dans les coulisses de la publicité que tourne Marilyn Monroe pour Coca-Cola en 1953, qui prit place dans l'immense propriété nommée GreenAcres, appartenant à l'acteur Harold Lloyd, qui par la même occasion, prend ces photographies du tournage. Longtemps restés inédits, la plupart des clichés seront dévoilés au public bien après la mort d'Harold Lloyd.
