Synopsis

May Martin et sa fille Peggy travaillent comme danseuses et chanteuses dans une revue de music-hall. Mae a élevé seule sa fille et elles vivent dans un coquet appartement. Mae a tendance à trop surprotéger sa fille, l'empêchant de sortir avec d'autres amis et Peggy se sent étouffée par sa mère. Un jour, la vedette du show Bubbles demande si Peggy aimerait un rendez-vous avec un spectateur et Mae s'en mêle. Les deux femmes se disputent et Peggy, pour défendre sa mère, se bagarre avec Bubbles. Quand le manager Joe intervient pour remettre de l'ordre, Bubbles lui annonce qu'elle démissionne. Joe demande alors à Mae de la remplacer mais Mae a une autre idée et place Peggy sur scène pour les show en solo. Après que Peggy ait fait sa première prestation seule sur scène, Joe est tellement impressionné qu'il fait de Peggy la nouvelle reine du burlesque de la revue.
Peggy commence alors à recevoir régulièrement une orchidée d'un admirateur inconnu, et laissant sa curiosité l'emporter sur elle, elle attend devant le fleuriste d'où proviennent les fleurs pour découvrir l'identité de cet inconnu. L'admirateur s'avère être Randy Carroll, un jeune homme d'une classe sociale élevée. C'est le coup de foudre immédiat entre Peggy et Randy. Randy propose rapidement à Peggy de l'épouser, mais quand elle en parle à sa mère Mae, celle-ci s'inquiète.
Dans une conversation privée avec Randy, Mae explique pourquoi elle désapprouve cette union. Elle lui raconte alors ce qu'elle a elle-même vécu plus jeune - sa vie étant évoquée en flashback. Elle aussi était tombée amoureuse d'un homme qui venait d'une famille de la haute société, Alan Wakely. Mais Mae explique à Randy qu'il n'avait jamais avoué à ses parents quelle était la profession de Mae. Et quand cela a été découvert, la famille s'est retournée contre Mae et son mariage s'est effondré, alors qu'elle était enceinte de Peggy. Elle est ensuite retournée travailler au music-hall, protégée par Billy, un collègue, secrètement épris d'elle et a élevé seule sa fille. Elle pose donc la condition à Randy de dire la vérité à sa mère sur le milieu social de Peggy.
Randy le lui promet, mais quand Peggy et Mae arrivent chez Mme Carroll, elles se rendent vite compte que Randy ne lui a rien dit. Il a bien tenté d'aborder le sujet avec sa mère, mais n'y parvient pas. D'autant que Mme Carroll est très emballée de voir son fils amoureux, elle décide d'organiser chez elle une grande fête de fiançailles en y conviant tous ses amis de la haute société, ainsi que Billy, considéré comme l'oncle de Peggy. Au cours de la soirée, les musiciens sur scène reconnaissent Peggy et l'interpellent devant l'assemblée en l'appelant la "Reine du Burlesque". Cette imprudence créé un malaise au sein des invités et Peggy et sa mère Mae fuient la fête en se précipitant dans leur chambre pour faire leurs valises. Mme Carroll et son fils Randy discutent avec Peggy et Mae en leur demandant de revenir à la fête. La fête se poursuit avec Mme Carroll qui a manigancé en aparté avec Billy de faire croire à tout le monde qu'elle aussi était une chanteuse de burlesque quand elle était jeune. Elle se met à chanter devant un public surpris, choqué et amusé. Tout finit bien par le consentement de Mme Carroll et deux futurs mariages qui se profilent: celui de Peggy avec Randy et celui de Mae avec Billy.

May Martin and her daughter Peggy work as dancers and singers in a music-hall revue. Mae raised her daughter alone and they live in a pretty apartment. Mae tends to overprotect her daughter, preventing her from going out with other friends, and Peggy feels smothered by her mother. One day, the star of the show Bubbles asks if Peggy would like a date with a spectator and Mae gets involved. The two women argue and Peggy, in defense of her mother, gets into a fight with Bubbles. When manager Joe steps in to restore order, Bubbles announces to him that she is quitting and resigning. Joe then asks Mae to replace her but Mae has another idea and places Peggy on stage for the solo show. After Peggy performs her first solo performance on stage, Joe is so impressed that he makes Peggy the revue's new queen of burlesque.
Peggy then begins to regularly receive an orchid from an unknown admirer, and letting her curiosity get the better of her, she waits outside the florist where the flowers come from to find out the identity of this stranger. The admirer turns out to be Randy Carroll, a young man of high social class. It's love at first sight between Peggy and Randy. Randy quickly offers Peggy to marry him, but when she talks about it with her mother Mae, the latter gets worried.
In a private conversation with Randy, Mae explains why she disapproves of this union. She then tells him what she herself experienced when she was younger - her life being evoked in flashback. She too had fallen in love with Alan Wakely, who came from an upper class family. But Mae explains to Randy that he never confessed to his parents what Mae's profession was, and when this was discovered, the family turned against Mae and her marriage fell apart, as she was pregnant with Peggy. She then returned to work at the music-hall, protected by Billy, a colleague, secretly in love with her and raised her daughter alone. She therefore asks Randy to tell the truth to his mother about Peggy's social condition.
Randy promises her, but when Peggy and Mae arrive at Mrs. Carroll's, they quickly realize Randy hasn't told her. He tried to broach the subject with his mother, but did not succeed. Especially since Mrs. Carroll is very excited to see her son in love, she decides to organize a big engagement party at her house, inviting all her friends from high society, as well as Billy, considered as Peggy's uncle. During the party, the musicians on stage recognize Peggy and challenge her in front of the assembly, calling her the "Queen of Burlesque". This recklessness creates unease among the guests and Peggy and her mother Mae flee the party by rushing to their room to pack their bags. Mrs. Carroll and her son Randy chat with Peggy and Mae asking them to come back to the party. The party continues with Mrs. Carroll who schemed as an aside with Billy to make everyone believe that she too was a burlesque singer when she was young. She begins to sing in front of a surprised, shocked and amused audience. Everything ends well with Mrs. Carroll's consent and two future marriages looming: Peggy's with Randy and Mae's with Billy.
