Auburn and black checked wool dress

William_Travilla-dress_wool-01

Long wool dress, close to the body which perfectly molds the silhouette, with checks (houndstooth style) in black and auburn (you can sometimes read that the dress is brown, but it is indeed in a shade red / brown), with a wide black crossed collar, with the waist marked by a wide black stretch belt which closes with a gold metal buckle which clips and with long 5/8th sleeves.

This wool dress was designed by 20th Century Fox designer and stylist William "Billy" Travilla for the film Gentlemen prefer blondes filmed in late 1952/early 1953.
Marilyn did the hair,
makeup and "costume" of the dress tests on November 25, 1952, as can be read on the panel of these tests which were photographed (see opposite) and for which, she wears the same accessories as those in the film:
- two large golden bracelets (one on each arm, not worn on the wrist, but at the end of the 5/8th sleeves of the dress),
- a pair of golden hoop-style earrings,
- and black shoes open to the toes.

After finishing filming the movie Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Marilyn continued with How to Marry a Millionaire. To promote the two 20th Century Fox films in the press (through orders from the American magazines Collier's and Eye), she posed in the studio wearing clothes from both films in the spring of 1953, photographed by John Florea. She is shown lying on a sofa, near a man seen from behind taking notes, like a patient talking to her shrink. She wears the dress with the same jewelry and shoes as in the movie Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Finally, this session will not be included in the publication of the magazines.

Marilyn must have loved the comfort and warmth of this dress because she then borrowed it from the studios to wear it in places with rather cold temperatures.

(voir l'article Août 1953 Canada Pendant River of no return )

When Marilyn left for Canada in the summer of 1953 to shoot the film The River of No Return, she took the dress with her. In the province of Alberta, another film is being filmed: Saskatchewan with Shelley Winters. The actors from both films (Marilyn, Robert Mitchum, Rory Calhoun and his wife Lita Baron, as well as Shelley Winters) spend an evening together in August 1953 where Marilyn is dressed in the dress and she does not wear jewelry. She is wearing a cast on her left leg, after falling during the filming of the film.

Once the exteriors of the film The River of No Return shot in Canada were completed, Marilyn (along with Joe DiMaggio and Robert Mitchum) took the plane to Vancouver airport on September 1, 1953 to return to Los Angeles. On the tarmac of Vancouver airport, she was photographed and even filmed by reporters. Still with her foot in a cast and moving around with the help of crutches, she is dressed in the dress, which can be seen under her long beige Dior coat.

(voir l'article 1/09/1953 Retour à Los Angeles )

When she got off the plane from Los Angeles, the temperatures being milder than in Canada, she took off the coat. On her right foot she wears the black heeled shoe with the open toe.

Marilyn married Joe DiMaggio on January 14, 1954, but Joe had to go to Japan (with Lefty O Doul, his former manager) for a presentation tour to inaugurate the new baseball season, a very popular sport in Japan. Marilyn having been suspended by the Fox studios, for refusing to make the film The Girl in Pink Tights, Joe asks Marilyn to accompany him. This is how Marilyn and Joe's honeymoon was grafted onto a long-planned business trip. They left on January 29, 1954 and arrived in Tokyo the next day (after a stopover in Hawaii). They will stay in Asia for almost a month (they will leave on February 23). But Marilyn will not only stay in Japan, since she will go on tour for 4 days to sing in front of soldiers (from February 16 to 19) in South Korea.
For this trip to Asia, Marilyn took a lot of luggage, including the wool dress. During her stay in Japan, she went with Joe DiMaggio to the city of Hiroshima, on the Japanese island of Honshū (infamous for having been largely destroyed during the atomic bombing by the Americans on August 6, 1945, during the Second World War). They stayed two days in Hiroshima: on February 12, 1954, they visited the surrounding area and went to museums; on February 13, 1954, Marilyn accompanies Joe in performance at the baseball stadium in Hiroshima: under her large fur coat that she left open, she wears the wool dress, the hoop earrings and the open black heeled shoes to the toes.

During her four-day tour of Korea, Marilyn will be seen wearing the wool dress in backstage. The temperatures are freezing this season and Marilyn decided to wear a thin strappy dress by Ceil Chapman (leaving the neckline and her arms bare) for her stage performances. So off stage, she covers up to visit the bases and participate in dinners: she wears military clothing (army pants and jacket, often with a big black turtleneck sweater and rangers on her feet); or the wool dress that keeps her warm.

On the evening of February 16, 1954, she was at the base of the 7th Infantry: she first gave a concert dressed in her sparkling dress (in a large tent with a stage section on a platform), then she was the guest of honor at a dinner held by 55 officers where she wears the wool dress, always with the pair of black shoes open to the toes and this time, long dangling earrings.

No doubt she is cold, because during this evening, she then wears a scarf around her neck and a large military shirt over the dress.

On February 18, 1954, she spent the end of the day at the 2nd Division base. After giving her concert on an open-air stage (stage called Bulldozer Bowl), she changes to go visit the base: she wears the wool dress to greet the soldiers, standing in a jeep, with black boots on her feet. Then she adds the army jacket on her shoulders on top.

In the evening, she is invited to the dinner organized by the 2nd Division. Refusing to be served, Marilyn waits in the queue and carries her tray in front of the dishes of the cooks who serve her then goes to eat at the officers' table. As with every meal she has during her tour, a large cake is presented to her, which she cuts into slices.

William_Travilla-dress_wool-1954-02-18-korea-2nd_division-lunch-010

The soldiers then give her a badge (placed on her dress at the left shoulder), and she share a large cake with them. Then she transforms into a waitress with Jean O' Doul, wearing a small white hat on her head to serve the soldiers' plates.

We will no longer see Marilyn wearing the dress after her stay in Korea. The dress being a property of the Fox studios, Marilyn undoubtedly took it to the studios' costume Department. We also do not know what became of the dress because it was never presented in any exhibition, nor resold at auction.
Some websites offer copies of the dress for sale (sites like Etsy for example) or bloggers present their creation of a copy (like Miss Dixie O'Dare on her blog).

Description par l'éditeur Paquet: Février 1954...

Lot 89001: A Marilyn Monroe Unusual Inscribed 'Frame Glass' to Arthur Miller, Circa 1960.
A black and white photograph of the star circa 1956, looking wistful, housed in a black wooden frame with the glass signed by her in red wax pencil "I know when / I am not there / for you -- !!!" with her added line marks below forming what look like "X's" or "M's" or both but hard to decipher; consigned directly by the daughters of Aaron Frosch [Monroe's attorney] who said that when their father was handling MM's divorce from Arthur Miller, she gave Frosch a number of items she didn't want anymore, including this photograph which she evidently inscribed to Miller as an apology; interestingly, MM wrote this note with a colored wax pencil, the same kind she used to cross out images of herself on contact sheets that she didn't like; also intriguing to speculate about the photograph itself: it was likely a favorite of hers or Miller's and it was probably hanging somewhere in the couple's home where MM knew Miller would see her message on it. (Please note the inscription has changed to an orangish color and it's faded due to age.)
Matted and framed: 14 1/2" x 12"

Lot 89009A Marilyn Monroe Signed Black and White Photograph, 1955.
An original print with a glossy finish, an enlarged snapshot depicting the star wearing a white evening gown and a white fur coat, signed in blue ballpoint ink in the lower right corner "To Jim / Love & Kisses / Marilyn Monroe;" from the personal collection of James Collins, one of the 'Monroe Six' -- the group of young kids who followed Marilyn around NYC so often that the star ended up knowing them all by name and allowing them special access to her (like letting them take countless pictures and giving them numerous autographs); included is a black and white photograph of Collins: an original print with a matte finish, depicting Collins as a teenager in 1955 standing at a typewriter that was set up outside of a shop on an NYC street, verso is stamped in part "Life Magazine / ...Photo by Michael Rouger / ... Apr 13 1955;" Collins remembers that this photograph of him actually ran in the magazine with a caption noting what he had just typed which was "Marilyn Monroe is a beautiful girl." (Please note the photograph of MM is heavily wrinkled on the lower margin and has a 1 1/2" tear in same area which somewhat affects her signature; the photograph of Collins is heavily wrinkled with two lower corners missing.)
10" x 8"
More Information:
"Marilyn Monroe is a beautiful girl!" were the words I was typing when as a 17 year-old, this picture of me was shot by a photographer from LifeMagazine in 1955. The photo, which actually appeared in the magazine a couple of months later, launched my own collection of Marilyn Monroe photos taken overseveral years by me and fivefellow teenage fans who became known as "The Monroe 6." During Marilyn's time in New York, I and the others photographed herin various locations around the city. We would then run to the drugstore to get our snapshots developed in multiples so that all of us could have all the shots we had taken of her (thus the reason for the different shapes and sizes of the photos my collection). In the era before Google and GPS and TMZ and smartphones, we were alerted to Marilyn's appearancesand whereabouts by sources ranging fromVariety Magazinetoher Upper East Side hairdresser. Marilyn got to know the six of us well as we journeyed around the city with her and I remember her always being gracious and friendly. We wanted nothing from her except the opportunity to take her picture or to get her autograph - and often times she would sign on the very photographs we had just taken of her the day before. After Marilyn died, I put these photographs in a closet for many decades, though over the last few years, I have posted a few of them on the Internet for fans to see. I am now ready to let others have my original 1950s-era snapshots of the movie star I had the luck and pleasure to see many times up close and in the flesh - Miss Marilyn Monroe! And she did not disappoint - she was absolutely beautiful as all these photos clearly indicate. When you saw her in person, shewas THE movie star, no doubt about it!

Film Footage

Lot 89027A Marilyn Monroe Never-Before-Seen Piece of Color Film Footage from Korea, 1954.
Shot on 8mm, approximately 1 minute and 21 seconds long, footage shows MM walking outside with a soldier escort (as she wears pants and a bomber jacket) while dozens of other soldiers surround her (to take her photograph), then it shows her getting into a car, then it (briefly) shows her performing on stage (as she wears the purple spaghetti-strapped sequined dress); shot by the current owner's father when he was stationed in Korea, he had close access to the star during the walking sequences, but was farther away when she was on stage; the original 1954 film was on three separate reels as the soldier shot tons of footage that didn't include MM (it's of the Korean people, the landscape, and fellow American soldiers) but it has now been spliced together and put on one modern-day plastic reel; the three 1954-era metal reels are still included as is a DVD transfer so the footage can be viewed.

Lot 488 MARILYN MONROE ARCHIVE OF PHOTOGRAPHS BY JOSEPH JASGUR
An archive of photographs of Marilyn Monroe taken by Joseph Jasgur in 1946. The photographs were taken of a 19-year-old Norma Jeane Dougherty, before she was Marilyn Monroe.
