Le 26 mars 1955, Marilyn Monroe pose en compagnie de Milton Berle et d'une petite fille de 8 ans, Alice Fitzpatrick, pour préparer la performance qu'ils donneront au cirque Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey le 30 mars, et dont les recettes seront reversées au profit de la lutte contre l'arthrite et les rhumatismes. Les photographies promotionnelles sont prises par Milton Greene, dans son studio de Lexington Avenue, à Manhattan, New York.
On March 26, 1955, Marilyn Monroe poses with Milton Berle and a 8-year-old girl, Alice Fitzpatrick, who suffers from arthritis, to prepare the performance that they will give with the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey on March 30, and whose income will be donated to support the fight against arthritis and rheumatism. Le but de cette séance, qui réunit Marilyn Monroe et Marlon Brando, est de promouvoir la première du film The Rose Tattoo qui se tiendra à New York le 12 décembre 1955 : Marilyn s'y rendra aux bras de Brando (ils ont d'ailleurs une liaison secrète à ce moment là). C'est pour accéler la vente des tickets d'entrée, qui se vendent plutôt mal, que le photographe Milton Greene a l'idée de les faire poser ensemble en novembre 1955 dans son studio au 480 Lexington Avenue, 45th Street à New York.
Les deux comédiens posent ainsi pour le compte de l'Actors Studio où Marilyn porte l'écharpe "Actors Studio Benefit Usher" puis ils tiennent une reproduction géante du ticket d'entrée de la première, les bénéfices de la vente des tickets seront reversés à l'Actors Studio.
The aim of this session, which brings together Marilyn Monroe and Marlon Brando, is to promote the premiere of The Rose Tattoo which will be held in New York on December 12, 1955: Marilyn will go there in the arms of Brando (they also have a secret love affair at that time). It was to speed up the sale of entrance tickets, which are selling rather poorly, that the photographer Milton Greene has the idea of having them pose together in November 1955 in his studio at 480 Lexington Avenue, 45th Street in New York.
The two actors pose for the Actors Studio where Marilyn wears the scarf "Actors Studio Benefit Usher" then they hold a giant reproduction of the entrance ticket to the premiere, the profits from the sale of tickets will be donated to the Actors Studio.

Plusieurs vêtements de la créatrice Anna Klein, une amie proche de Greene qui avait l'habitude d'emprunter ses créations pour ses séances photos, sont commandés plusieurs semaines à l'avance. Le jour de la séance des prises de vues, ils s'apercoivent que les vêtements sont tous deux tailles trop petits. Longtemps la rumeur autour de cette anecdote a été justifiée par le fait que Marilyn avait pris du poids entre temps, mais en réalité les tenues avaient été commandées par Amy Greene (la femme de Milton), qui ne connaissait pas la taille de Marilyn à cette période. Milton et Marilyn décident de faire tout de même une séance avec cette tenue, et la robe n'est alors pas attachée dans le dos.
Cette robe de ballerine en tulle et satin, attribuée à tort à Anna Klein, est en fait une création de Herbert Kasper (tel qu'on le voit sur l'étiquette dans le dos), qui travallait pour le prêt à porter Arnold-Fox, située sur la 7ème Avenue.
Ce soir là, deux séances sont prises dans ce studio sur fond noir avec une chaise en rotin: celle-ci de la "Ballerine" et celle de la "Robe Dorée".
Une photographie de cette séance, une de Albert Einstein (prise par Philippe Halsman) et une de Winston Churchill (par Yousuf Karsh) ont été selectionnées comme étant les trois images les plus populaires du XXème siècle, par Time-Life’s.

Several clothes by designer Anna Klein, a close friend of Greene who used to borrow her design creations for photo shoots, are ordered several weeks in advance. On the day of the shoot, they realize that the clothes are both too small. For a long time, the rumor surrounding this story was justified by the fact that Marilyn had gained weight in the meantime, but in fact the outfits has been ordered by Amy Greene (Milton's wife), who didn't know the size of Marilyn at this time. Milton and Marilyn decide to still make a session with this outfit, and the dress is not attached to the back.
This ballerina dress in tulle and satin, wrongly attributed to Anna Klein, is actually a creation of Herbert Kasper (as seen on the label on the back), who worked for the fashion manufacturer Arnold-Fox, located on 7th Avenue.
That night, two sessions are taken in this studio on a black background with a rattan chair: this one of the "Ballerina" and the other one named the "Gold Dress".
An image from this sitting was selected with Albert Einstein (Philippe Halsman) and Winston Churchill (Yousuf Karsh) as one of Time-Life’s three most popular images of the 20th Century.

Marilyn est photographiée dans différentes tenues: en chemisier vert et jupe noire, en robe noire et fourreau, en foulard satiné orange et jupe noire, puis recouverte d'un genre de drap blanc.

En la découvrant ainsi, Milton Greene aurait dit "Photographions cela !". Bien que le crédit photographique de la séance soit désormais attribué à Milton Greene car la séance a eu lieu dans son studio, Marilyn est en fait photographiée par Sam Shaw - et il semblerait que ce soit Marty Bauman, assistant photographe de Greene, qui soit l'auteur des photos prises en coulisses.

Discovering her like this, Milton Greene would have said "Let's shoot this!". Although photo credit of the sitting is now attributed to Milton Greene as the shoot took place in his studio, Marilyn is actually photographed by Sam Shaw - and it seems that Marty Bauman, Greene's assistant photographer, is the one who photographs the backstage photos.
