19/07/1946, 20th Century Fox - Premiers essais filmés
Le 19 juillet 1946, Ben Lyon -directeur de casting pour la 20th Century Fox - fait passer des essais à sa jeune recrue Norma Jean, qui doit simplement aller et venir devant la caméra, en fumant une cigarette qu'elle écrase ensuite dans un cendrier. Sous la direction du metteur en scène Walter Lang et le caméraman Leon Shamroy, l'essai est muet et filmé en couleur, ce qui est encore assez rare à l'époque pour un simple casting. Le petit film est ensuite montré à Darryl Zanuck -le grand patron de la Fox- qui n'est guère convaincu de la prestation de la future Marilyn Monroe ! Mais grâce à la persévérance de Ben Lyon, qui croyait au potentiel de Norma Jean, on lui fait signer un contrat de six mois.
Marilyn avait été maquillée par Allan Whitey Snyder. L'essai aurait été filmé sur le plateau de tournage du film "Mother Wore Tights" (comédie musicale avec Betty Grable et Dan Dailey).
Leon Shamroy racontera plus tard: "J'ai pensé que cette fille serait une autre Harlow. Sa beauté naturelle et son complexe d'infériorité lui donnaient un air mystérieux. J'ai eu un frisson. Cette fille avait quelque chose que je n'avais pas vu depuis les films muets. Elle avait une beauté fantastique comme Gloria Swanson, et elle a fait l'amour dans un film comme Jean Harlow. Chaque image du test rayonnait de sexe. Elle n'avait pas besoin de bande son, elle créait des effets visuellement. Elle nous montrait qu'elle pouvait vendre des émotions en images."
Il n'existe malheureusement aucune images de cet essai.
On July 19, 1946, Ben Lyon - casting director for 20th Century Fox - gave tests to his young recruit Norma Jean, who simply has to come and go in front of the camera, smoking a cigarette which she then crushes in an ashtray. Under the direction of director Walter Lang and cameraman Leon Shamroy, the test is silent and filmed in color, which is still quite rare at the time for a simple screen test. The small film is then shown to Darryl Zanuck -the big boss of Fox- who is hardly convinced by the performance of the future Marilyn Monroe! But thanks to the perseverance of Ben Lyon, who believed in Norma Jean's potential, she is made to sign a six-month contract.
Marilyn has been make up by Allan Whitey Snyder. The test would be filmed on the set of the movie "Mother Wore Tights" (a musical film with Betty Grable and Dan Dailey).
Leon Shamroy would later relate: "I thought, this girl will be another Harlow. Her natural beauty plus her inferiority complex gave her a look of mystery. I got a cold chill. This girl had something I hadn't seen since silent pictures. She had kind of a fantastic beauty like Gloria Swanson, and she got sex on a piece of film like Jean Harlow. Every frame of the test radiated sex. She didn't need a sound track, she was creating effects visually. She was showing us she could sell emotions in pictures."

Le "Circle" est l'un des premiers groupes de théâtre professionnels basé à Los Angeles et formé en 1945 par un groupe d'étudiants de l'université d'UCLA. Parmi les premiers élèves, trois auront une certaine renommée: Kathleen Freeman, William Schallert et Sydney Chaplin (l'un des fils de Charlie Chaplin).
D'ailleurs Marilyn connaissait bien Sydney Chaplin: elle avait eu une romance avec l'un de ses demi-frères Charlie Chaplin Jr; et il semblerait qu'elle ait aussi eu une liaison avec Sydney.
"The Circle" was one of the first Los Angeles-based professional theatre groups and formed in 1945 by a group of UCLA university students. Among the first students, three will have a certain fame: Kathleen Freeman, William Schallert and Sydney Chaplin (one of Charlie Chaplin's sons).
Besides, Marilyn knew Sydney Chaplin well: she had a romance with one of his half-brothers Charlie Chaplin Jr; and it seems she also had an affair with Sydney.

En novembre 1949, des membres de la troupe (Kathleen Freeman, Paul Levitt, Ted Thorpe et une douzaine d'autres - surnommés "le groupe des dissidents" par le magazine "Variety") décident de former leur propre théâtre, où ils reprennent la particularité de se produire en ronde: c'est le "Players Ring". Ils transforment un ancien magasin d'antiquité en un théâtre de 200 places au 8351 Santa Monica Boulevard sur North Flores Avenue (dans l'actuel West Hollywood). Le théatre acquiert rapidement une renommée: leur première production en février 1950 "Street Scene" d'Elmer Rice avec 50 acteurs fait sensation. Leur deuxième spectacle "Androcles and the Lion" de George Bernard Shaw commence en mai 1950 et la presse leur consacre des articles. Bon nombre d'acteurs (débutants et confirmés) se précipitent au théâtre qui devient le lieu où se montrer pour faire parler de soi: Shelley Winters, Roddy MacDowall, les Marx Brothers (Groucho et Harpo) sont aperçus dans le public.
Beaucoup d'acteurs débuteront en passant par ce théâtre: Jack Cassidy, Michael Landon, et le plus connu reste Jack Nicholson (il y tient son premier rôle sur scène en 1956).
C'est le 12 mars 1950 que Marilyn Monroe passe une audition pour un rôle au théâtre "Players Ring": est-ce pour leur deuxième production qui verra le jour en mai ou une autre pièce, il n'y a aucune information. Le photographe Richard C. Miller saisit ce moment.
In November 1949, members of the troupe (Kathleen Freeman, Paul Levitt, Ted Thorpe and a dozen others - named "the dissident group" by "Variety" magazine) decides to form their own theater, where they takes the particularity of performing in the round: it is the "Players Ring". They transform a former antique store into a 200-seat theater at 8351 Santa Monica Boulevard at North Flores Avenue (now West Hollywood). The theater quickly gaines fame: their first production in February 1950 "Street Scene" by Elmer Rice with 50 actors makes a sensation. Their second show "Androcles and the Lion" by George Bernard Shaw began in May 1950 and the press devoted articles to them. Many actors (beginners and confirmed) rush to the theater which becomes the place to show off to talk about oneself: Shelley Winters, Roddy MacDowall, the Marx Brothers (Groucho and Harpo) are seen in the audience.
Many actors will begin by passing through this theater: Jack Cassidy, Michael Landon, and the most famous remains Jack Nicholson (he played his first role there in 1956).
It is on March 12, 1950 that Marilyn Monroe auditions for a part in a play at the "Players Ring" theater: is it for their second production which will be released in May or for another play, there is no information. Photographer Richard C. Miller captures this moment.

Le 10 décembre 1950 Marilyn Monroe passe des essais pour un film intitulé Cold Shoulder, où son rôle était celui de la petite amie d'un gangster. Finalement, le film n'aboutira pas et ne sera même jamais tourné.
Cependant, son interprétation dramatique lors de l'audition lui aura suffit à se faire remarquer par les studios qui lui proposeront le film As Young As You Feel et lui feront signer un nouveau contrat.

Mai 1947 - Marilyn Monroe fait des essais images en couleur et sons devant une caméra à la Fox. S'agit-il de vrais essais d'un casting pour un film ou d'une mise en scène pour des photographies publicitaires ? Ces photographies font parties d'un reportage organisé par le photographe David Cicero, publié dans des magazines en juin 1947 (Sunday World Herald et Rotogravure News Sentinel), et servant de support publicitaire pour le film Scudda Hoo, Scudda Hay ! avec la séance de Baby-Sitting et de l' Acting Sitting avec la coach Helena Sorrell.
1947, May - Marilyn Monroe tests color images and sounds in front of a Fox camera. Are these real tests of a casting for a film or a staging for advertising photographs ? These photographs are part of a report organized by photographer David Cicero, published in magazines in the month of June 1947 (Sunday World Herald and Rotogravure News Sentinel), and serving as an advertising media for the movie Scudda Hoo, Scudda Hay!. with the "Baby-Sitting" and "Acting Sitting with coach Helena Sorrell".

Le photographe Leo Caloia filme ces essais en 1946 à l' Ambassador Hotel à Hollywood. Radio KFI de Los Angeles a organisé un show sur les techniques utilisées pour les photos artistiques.
