Cette photographie représentant une jeune femme aux cheveux châtains clairs posant la tête penchée en avant en tenant de ses mains un grillage dans un champ a été prise par le photographe André De Dienes. A première vue, elle ressemble étrangement à Marilyn Monroe, ou plutôt à l'époque où elle n'était encore que Norma Jeane, une jeune mannequin.

D'autant que la photographie a été prise par André De Dienes, qui est l'un des premiers photographes professionnels a avoir multiplié les séances avec la jeune Norma Jeane en novembre et décembre 1945, quand elle était encore qu'une jeune mannequin inscrite à l'agence Blue Book. D'ailleurs, même les vêtements, la coiffure, l'expression du visage et la mise en scène champêtre ressemblent beaucoup aux photos que De Dienes va faire de Norma Jeane pendant leur voyage vers l'Ouest en décembre 1945.

- D'abord, il faut remonter à la source de publication de cette image, qui a été publiée en couverture du magazine américain US Camera qui date de novembre 1944. En "Une" de ce magazine, trois photographies sont publiées: une photo des studios Universal de l'actrice Jean Parker, et deux autres photos prises par Andre de Dienes de deux modèles dont les noms ne sont pas mentionnés. Si le magazine est paru en publication dans les kiosques à journaux en novembre 1944, la photo a donc été prise avant (au maximum en octobre 1944).
Sauf qu'en octobre 1944, Norma Jeane Dougherty (future Marilyn Monroe) travaillait comme employée à l'usine Radioplane. Elle avait pris un congé (au début de l'automne) pour faire un grand voyage aux Etats-Unis: d'abord dans le Tennessee pour rendre visite à Bebe Goddard, puis dans le Michigan à Detroit pour rencontrer sa demie-soeur Berniece Miracle. Elle rentre en Californie en novembre pour reprendre son travail, où elle y est remarquée par une équipe de reporters, et notamment le photographe David Conover qui réalise ses premières photos professionnelles en ce mois de novembre 1944 à l'usine. Mais en cette fin d 'année 1944, Norma Jeane est encore loin d'imaginer qu'elle deviendra une mannequin.

On the cover of this magazine, three photographs are published: a photo of the Universal studios of the actress Jean Parker, and two other photos taken by Andre de Dienes of two models whose names are not mentioned. If the magazine appeared in publication in newsstands in November 1944, the photo was therefore taken before (at the latest in October 1944). Except that in October 1944, Norma Jeane Dougherty (future Marilyn Monroe) was working as an employee at the Radioplane factory. She had taken a leave of absence (at the beginning of the fall) to make a long trip to the United States: first in Tennessee to visit Bebe Goddard, then in Michigan in Detroit to meet her half-sister Berniece Miracle. Elle pose pour vanter la mode de l'époque dans un encart publicitaire pour présenter un tailleur et l'adresse du magasin pour l'acheter (cf photo ci-contre).

- David Conover introduced Norma Jeane to other photographers such as Potter Hueth and William Carroll, who photographed her in turn, immediately recognizing her photogenic potential. They encouraged Norma Jeane to meet Emmeline Snively, who ran the Blue Book modeling agency, where Norma Jeane signed her contract on August 2, 1945. It was from this date that she embarked on a new career, that of a model for photographers.
From what we know today about Marilyn's life, her first professional photograph was published in Movieland magazine in December 1945. She posed to promote the fashion of the time in an advertising insert to present a suit and the address of the store to buy it (see photo opposite).

She participated in a photo shoot that took place in December 1945, serving as an advertising medium for the Douglas airline. It is proven, even today (I specify the time positioning, because we still discover unpublished photographs and information on Marilyn's life), that the Douglas Airview magazine from January 1946 remains her first photo published on the cover of a magazine.

- La confusion de la photographie présentée en couverture de US Camera de novembre 1944 qui pourrait représenter Norma Jeane vient du fait, outre que le modèle lui ressemble, que le photographe à l'origine du cliché soit André De Dienes. Le photographe aimait mettre en situation ses modèles (inconnues ou stars de cinéma) dans le même style de mise en scène. C'est d'ailleurs en cela que l'on reconnait de manière général le style photographique d'un photographe professionnel, qui développe sa façon personnelle de représenter ses sujets. De Dienes a beaucoup travaillé sur le nue féminin, faisant poser ses modèles dans des paysages de grandes étendues désertiques (dans le sable à la plage ou dans le désert). Pour ses autres photographies plus traditionnelles, il semble qu'il aimait faire poser ses jeunes modèles dans la nature (champ, plage, désert), faisant ressortir un état d'esprit de liberté, de jeunesse et de fraîcheur spontanée.

It is also in this that fact we generally recognize the photographic style of a professional photographer, who develops his personal way of representing his subjects. De Dienes worked a lot on the female nude, having his models pose in landscapes of large desert expanses (in the sand at the beach or in the desert). For his other more traditional photographs, it seems that he liked to have his young models pose in nature (field, beach, desert), bringing out a state of mind of freedom, youth and spontaneous freshness.
