Grand Ball with a Historic Air
SOCIETY SERVES CHARITY AND FRENCH-AMERICAN RELATIONS IN NEW YORK

The April in Paris Ball, always one of the largest charity events of the New York social season, took on added glamor and significance this year. It served as an extravagant prelude to America's bicentennial celebration next September of the birth of the Marquis de Lafayette, historic symbol of Franco-American friendship. And it attracted to The Waldorf-Astoria Hotel about 1,300 members of American and European society, who paid $100 each and donated $130,000 to French and U.S. charities.
   Mrs. William C.T. Gaynor, wife of a New York surgeon who has been general chairman of the ball for four years, put in at least three months of work to make certain that those who attended had en evening of fancy fun. Guests danced and dined with celebrities from the entertainment world, received gifts from France, saw a display of dresses especially designed for the event by French couturiers and watched a spectacle that seemed to have been lifted from a movie extravaganza. It featured the faithful re-enactment of the reception given Lafayette on his New York visit of 1824, complete with old-style carriage drawn by two horses.

Le Bal d'avril à Paris, l'un des événements caritatifs les plus prestigieux de la saison mondaine new-yorkaise, a revêtu cette année un prestige et une importance accrus. Il a servi de prélude fastueux aux célébrations américaines du bicentenaire de la naissance du marquis de Lafayette, symbole historique de l'amitié franco-américaine, en septembre prochain. L'événement a attiré à l'hôtel Waldorf-Astoria environ 1 300 membres de la société américaine et européenne, qui ont déboursé 100 dollars chacun et ont fait don de 130 000 dollars à des œuvres caritatives françaises et américaines.
   Mme William C.T. Gaynor, épouse d'un chirurgien new-yorkais et présidente du bal depuis quatre ans, a consacré au moins trois mois à l'organisation de cette soirée prestigieuse et divertissante pour les invités.
