Description - par l'éditeur: This is undoubtedly the best book even written about Marilyn Monroe, the beautiful, doomed movie star - because for the first time she herself is extensively quoted:
"Sometimes I feel as tied to the beauty business as an addict to his drugs. It's a relief to get in sloppy clothes. When my looks start to go, so will most of the fans."
W.J. Weatherby, who was an international reputation as an interviewer of celebrities, first met Marilyn when he was covering the making of her last movie, The Misfits, for the Manchester Guardian. They became friendly when they met again at the Actor's Studio in New York. Much of this book is an account of their long conversations in a bar on Eight Avenue. They made an agreement that he wouldn't write about their meetings at the time, and therefore she could talk freely. But has a good reporter with a trained memory, he kept complete notes of their conversations, and these notes now form the heart of this book.
Conversations with Marilyn is a close look at a very complex woman in action - in talk ranging from the burdens of being a sex symbol (and the lesson of Betty Grable) to her dreams and nightmares, from ex-husband Arthur Miller to both her beloved Kennedys. Apart from the extraordinary self-portrait, Conversations presents a fascinating gallery of such supporting characters as Montgomery Clift, Sam Goldwyn, Clark Gable, Clifford Odets, John Huston, Charles Laughton, Billy Wilder, Martin Luther King, Lee Strasberg, Peter Lawford, Bobby Kennedy, Christopher Isherwood, and Sean O'Casey. .
W.J. Weatherby has been awarded the coveted Edgar for one of his books, and James Baldwin selected another as one of the best books of the year. His interviews have been extensively reprinted and anthologized. Says Arthur Miller of him:
"Weatherby tries to speak for the subject of his interviews, as he should, instead of using his man to make his own fortune in quips and journalistic quackery."

Description - par l'éditeur: In the dark recesses of a bar on Eight Avenue, Marilyn Monroe frequently took of her mental make-up for Bill Weatherby, a well-known international writer and journalist. In the last two years of her life, they soke together not as a celebrity to interviewer, but as friends and confidants. She confessed to him the strains of being a sex goddess; told him of her dreams - and her nightmares; discussed her ex-husband Arthur Miller and her belobed Kennedys; and remarked on many of the stars who made up her world.
Monroe and Weatherby spoke freely, with the understanding that these private conversations would remain private until a later date. Now they form the core of this extraordinary portrait of Marilyn Monroe, caught off-camera, off-guard. At last, after the plethora of books about her, comes this revelation, in her own words, of her own thoughts and feelings. It is probably the closest we shall ever come to knowing the real Marilyn, the persona behind the pinup photograph, the tinsel glamour and the Hollywood publicity machine. For the first time, Marilyn Monroe speaks for herself.
W.J. Weatherby was born at Heaton Moor, Cheshire. He became a feature writer on the Guardian, with assignments ranging from the Berlin Wall to Reno, where he saw Marilyn Monroe make her last film. As a foreign correspondent, he covered the main racial crisis in the USA from 1960-63.
He has worked as a writer for Newsweek in New York, as a columnist for the Times Literary Supplement, and has written for the Sunday Times, the Observer, Twentieth Century, etc. He is the author of three widely-praised novels, and of a study of the Negro protest which was selected by the Guardian and by James Baldwin as one of the best books of the year.
Arthur Miller has paid this tribute to him: "Bill Weatherby... tries to speak for the subject of his interviews, as he should, instead of using his man to make his own fortune in quips and journalistic quackery."
