Arnold Newman

Né le 3 mars 1918 à New York, Arnold Abner Newman est le deuxième fils d'une fratrie de trois garçons dont le père est ouvrier dans le textile et la mère au foyer. En 1920, le père perd son emploi et la famille part s'installer à Atlantic City, où son père fit carrière en gérant de petits hôtels. Pendant la Dépression des années 30, la famille part à Miami, où son père poursuit ses activités dans l'hôtellerie.
Arnold Newman obtient une bourse en 1940 pour étudier les arts et la peinture à l'université de Miami (Coral Gables, Floride). En raison de difficultés financières, il commence à travailler dans un studio de portraits à Philadelphie, puis à Baltimore et Allentown. En décembre 1939, il accepte le poste de directeur d'un studio à West Palm Beach, en Floride.
"Découvert" en 1941 et encouragé par Beaumont Newhall et Alfred Stieglitz, Arnold Newman expose avec Ben Rose à l'A.D. Gallery et ouvre son propre studio à Miami Beach et fait sa première exposition individuelle en 1945: "Artists Look Like This" ("À quoi ressemblent les artistes") au musée d'Art moderne de Philadelphie. L'année suivante, il s'établit à New York et le 25 août 1947, l'une de ses photographies fait la couverture du magazine Life. En 1948, il accepte des travaux publicitaires et s'installe au 39 West 67th Street à New York. Il voyage à travers le monde pour couvrir des reportages pour les magazines Holiday et Life: en Europe, en Asie et en Afrique. En 1949, il épouse Augusta Rubenstein qui lui donnera deux fils: Eric et David.

Parmi ses sujets célèbres photographiés: Braque, Dubuffet, Picasso, Miro, Igor Stravinsky, Marcel Duchamp, Willem DeKooning, Jackson Pollock, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, Eisenhower, Truman Capote, Arthur Miller, Cecil Beaton, Marilyn Monroe, Andy Warhol, David Bailey, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, Woody Allen...

Il reçoit plusieurs récompenses: le prix de la Photokina (Cologne) en 1951, celui du photojournalisme de l'université de Miami en 1957. Son portrait de Lyndon B. Johnson, vice-président de John Kennedy, deviendra le portrait officiel de la Maison Blanche lorsque celui-ci deviendra Président suite à l'assassinat de Kennedy.
Dans les années 1970, il signe des contrats avec Travel & Leisure et vit ses premières expériences de découpage. Il participe aux Rencontres internationales de la photographie, à Arles, en 1979, 1982 et 1985.
Il poursuit ses expositions à travers le monde: en 1986 en Finlande et à San Diego, en 1989 au Venezuela, en 1990 en Australie et à Budapest, en 1992 à Washington.
Au magazine Photo, en juin 1973, il définissait ainsi les qualités du portraitiste : "Evaluer une personne, une situation et un travail de façon instinctive. Et posséder une certaine autorité."
De son travail, il disait aussi: "Alors que mon approche est devenue populairement connue comme étant des portraits environnementaux, cela suggérait une simple part de ce que je faisais et de ce que j'étais."
"Je déteste l'idée même de célébrité".
Il décède le 6 juin 2006 à l'âge de 88 ans, d'un arrêt cardiaque chez lui, dans l'Upper West Side de Manhattan à New York.

Arnold Newman a photographié Marilyn Monroe lors d'une soirée privée le 20 janvier 1962 chez le producteur Henry Weinstein où se trouvait parmi les autres convives, le poète Carl Sandburg. C'est une Marilyn fraîche de simplicité (robe simple, foulard sur la tête et pieds nus), tantôt heureuse en dansant avec Sandburg, tantôt au regard mélancolique et l'air pensif, qui ressort de ces photos.

LS: You once stated that Marilyn Monroe caused a lot of problems?
AN: She didn’t give me any problems, but she was a very troubled woman, and I knew it immediately, I mean it didn’t take that much time to figure out. What had happened was that I had to go out to California to visit Carl, who was working there, writing the words of Christ, as I understand, for the movie The Greatest Story Ever Told. I made a hotel reservation, but a friend of mine, her producer, Henry Weinstein who was a brilliant guy, asked me to move in at his place. He was important enough to be the producer of the biggest star at the time. And this was the picture that Marilyn had to be fired from, because she would never show up. Sometimes she wouldn’t show up for a whole week. Financially it became utterly impossible for 20th Century to continue.
LS: What I find strange is that you are taking some very beautiful pictures of Marilyn Monroe, but in this specific picture looks troubled. It’s in a snapshot style?
AN: We were all making snapshots that evening. And this was a snapshot, as I call it, taken like in our home next door. My friend wanted me to take pictures of her for the movie, but she kept putting it off, like she put off everything else. If dinner were to be at 7 o’clock, she would show up at 10 o’clock at night. She would change her clothes, change her make-up, change her hairdo, everything, I mean this was common knowledge to anybody that had anything to do with her... And she kept putting it off, and putting it off, and I had two different trips out there, and I remember one night, at the first trip, I was supposed to leave on Saturday, and Weinstein said: No you have to leave on Sunday, because I want you to meet Marilyn.
Now her analyst took her in. The truth is she was my dinner partner. And actually this picture, lets see, was taken out of the tiniest frame, the tiniest portion of a 35mm that I pushed to 1200 in those days, that’s why it’s grainy, not for arty sake. And it was Marilyn and Carl Sandberg. She was pouring her heart out with all her troubles to Carl. And I was there just taking snapshots. And a friend of mine took my camera and took pictures of us, and I got other pictures.
LS: How many pictures did you take?
AN: Not many, because I kept hoping. There were about 7 or so people at dinner that night I took pictures. I didn't take pictures at dinner, I didn't want to break up the it up, you know, sometimes it's intruding. But that evening I started taking pictures. I had a 35 with me, and I start taking pictures of her, and then she said she couldn't sleep... She couldn't sleep at night. So Carl said to Marilyn: ”I'd show you the exercise that you before you go to bed.” And I have a whole series of pictures of her, showing how to do the exercise, or dancing with Carl. Here he is, this old man, but he had an eye for women; let's face it. Why not?
When she came later on I said ”Marilyn I still want to take pictures of you, do you have time while you are here?” She said, ”I don’t have any time, I don’t have any time.” And if she did make an appointment she would have broken it, if I know Marilyn. And she said, ”I’ll give you a ticket, you come out to California”, I said, ”Marilyn, I’ll come out to California, and then you’ll put it off again. Either we do it now or we won’t do it at all”. And we didn’t do it… And looking at these contact prints I realized, that this was Marilyn.
