Lorsque cette photographie de groupe réalisée par le photographe Philippe Halsman paraît dans le magazine américain Life du 10 octobre 1949, Marilyn semble être une reine entourée de ses dames d'honneur, assise au centre et au premier plan; la photographie comporte le sous-titre: "Sept starlettes hollywoodiennes et un ex-modèle formant un gentil portrait de groupe avant de donner totalement libre cours à leurs émotions dans un essai à l'écran", l'ex-mannequin étant Cathy Downs, qui a posé pour Vogue.
Le but de ce reportage photographique est de témoigner des talents des jeunes actrices en herbe et de l'intérêt de prendre des cours d'art dramatiques: Lois Maxwell, Suzanne Dalbert, Ricky Soma, Laurette Luez, Jane Nigh, Dolores Gardner, Marilyn Monroe et Cathy Downs.
Les jeunes talents ont été selectionnées par Gene Cook, l'éditeur de Life. Il s'agit de la première collaboration / séance photos entre Marilyn et le photographe Philippe Halsman. La séance aurait eu lieu au Beverly Hills Hotel le 9 mai 1949, tel que l'atteste un tampon de date au dos d'une photographie.

   

When this group photograph taken by photographer Philippe Halsman appears in the American magazine Life on October 10, 1949, Marilyn seems to be a queen surrounded by her ladies-in-waiting, seated in the center and in the foreground; the photograph features the caption: "Seven Hollywood starlets and an ex-model sit for a tranquil group portrait before turning on their emotions ifull blast for an acting test", the "ex-model" being Cathy Downs, posing for Vogue.
The aim of this photographic report is to testify to the talents of acting of young aspiring actresses and the interest of taking drama lessons: Lois Maxwell, Suzanne Dalbert, Ricky Soma, Laurette Luez, Jane Nigh, Dolores Gardner, Marilyn Monroe and Cathy Downs.
The young talents were selected by Gene Cook, the editor of Life. This is the first collaboration / photo sitting between Marilyn and photographer Philippe Halsman. The session would have taken place at the Beverly Hills Hotel on May 9, 1949, as evidenced by a date stamp on the back of a photograph.

Le photographe Philippe Halsman dira plus tard:
"Je me souviens de l'une des filles, une fausse blonde qu'on appelait Marilyn Monroe. Je me souviens aussi que ce n'est pas celle qui m'impressionnait le plus." 
"Elle est restée gravée dans ma mémoire parce que c'est celle qui perdait le plus de temps devant la glace. Elle pouvait passer des heures à se remettre du rouge à lèvres, à arranger son mascara, et à exaspérer les autres filles en les faisant attendre."

"I remember one of the girls, a fake blonde called Marilyn Monroe. I also remember that she was not the one that impressed me the most."
"She stuck in my memory because she was the one who wasted the most time in front of the mirror. She could spend hours recovering from lipstick, fixing her mascara, and to exasperate the other girls by making them wait."

LOIS MAXWELL

 Née le 14 février 1927 au Canada, elle rejoint l'armée canadienne à l'âge de 15 ans (en ayant menti sur son âge) en pleine seconde guerre mondiale, et se produit sur scène avec d'autres comédiens pour des spectacles de danse pour les soldats, allant jusqu'au Royaume-Uni. Sa vocation de devenir actrice la mène à la Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, la prestigieuse école de théâtre à Londres, où elle côtoie Roger Moore, avec qui elle restera amie. Elle part à Hollywood, tourne son premier film en 1946 avec David Niven, et remporte le Golden Globes de la révélation féminine en 1948 pour son rôle dans "That Hagen Girl". Elle change son nom Hooker pour Maxwell; mais n'obtenant que des rôles dans des séries B, elle retourne en Europe en 1950: elle s'installe à Rome pendant cinq ans, tourne des films (notamment avec une Sophia Loren encore débutante) et devient même pilote de course. En 1957, elle épouse un directeur de télé, Peter Marriott avec qui elle a deux enfants (Melinda et Christian) et retourne vivre à Londres. Elle tourne alors dans bon nombre de séries tv (et retrouve Roger Moore dans Le Saint, Amicalement Vôtre), et des petits rôles au cinéma (comme le Lolita de Kubrick en 1962), mais sa notoriété provient de son rôle récurrent (de Miss Moneypenny) dans les quatorze premiers films de James Bond (de 1962 à 1985) - elle avait postulé auprès du réalisateur Terence Young car elle avait besoin d'argent pour élever ses enfants et s'occuper de son mari cardiaque. Devenue veuve en 1973, elle retourne vivre au Canada et devient journaliste dans la presse locale (Le Toronto Sun), sous le pseudonyme de "Miss Moneypenny" de 1979 à 1994 et se lance dans les affaires de l'industrie du textile. En 1994, elle regagne l'Angleterre pour vivre près de sa fille et après une opération subie contre le cancer des intestins, elle part vivre auprès de son fils en Australie en 2001 et entame l'écriture de son autobiographie jusqu'à sa mort d'un cancer en 2007, à l'âge de 80 ans.

Her vocation to become an actress leads her to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, the prestigious theater school in London, where she meets Roger Moore, with whom she will remain friends. She moved to Hollywood, shot her first film in 1946 with David Niven, and won the Golden Globes for Most Promising Newcomer in 1948 for her role in "That Hagen Girl". She changes her name Hooker to Maxwell; but only obtaining roles in B films, she returned to Europe in 1950: she moved to Rome for five years, shot films (especially with a beginner named Sophia Loren) and even became a racing driver. In 1957, she married a TV director, Peter Marriott, with whom she had two children (Melinda and Christian) and returned to live in London. She then played in a lot of tv series (and meets Roger Moore in The Saint, The Persuaders !), and small roles in the cinema (like Kubrick's Lolita in 1962), but her notoriety comes from her recurring role (of Miss Moneypenny ) in the first fourteen James Bond films (1962-1985) - she applied to director Terence Young because she needed money to raise children and care for her heart-hearted husband. Widowed in 1973, she returned to live in Canada and became a journalist in the local press (Toronto Sun), under the pseudonym "Miss Moneypenny" from 1979 to 1994, and went into business in the textile industry. In 1994, she returned to England to live near her daughter and after a surgery for bowel cancer, she moved to live with her son in Australia in 2001 and began writing her autobiography until her death, from cancer in 2007, at the age of 80.

ENRICA SOMA

 D'origine italienne, Enrica -surnommée "Ricky" - naît le 9 mai 1929 à New York et a un frère Philip Soma. Son père devient une figure de la nuit de Manhattan en dirigeant le célèbre restaurant "Tony's Wife", fréquenté par des célébrités. Quand sa mère meurt à l'âge de 42 ans d'une pneumonie, son père se remarrie avec une personnalité mondaine avec qui il a trois autres enfants. Par l'intermédiaire de son père qui la pousse à faire carrière dans le divertissement, elle intègre le Ballet de New York en tant que danseuse principale et apprend avec le chorégraphe George Ballanchine; elle pose aussi comme mannequin et à 18 ans fait la couverture de Life (du 9 juin 1947), posant souvent pour Philippe Halsman. Le producteur et scénariste David O Selznick lui offre même un contrat pour devenir actrice et à la même période, le réalisateur John Huston tombe sous son charme en voyant sa photo. Bien qu'il soit marié (à Evelyn Keyes), il la courtise, divorce, et ils se marient en 1950; ils ont deux enfants: Walter Anthony Huston (qui deviendra scénariste puis avocat) et Angelica Huston (qui sera une célèbre actrice). Enrica ne se lancera jamais dans une carrière d'actrice. Son couple avec John Huston est libre: lui aura un fils hors mariage avec sa maîtresse l'actrice Zoe Sallis en 1962 (Danny Huston), et elle aura une fille avec son amant l'historien John Julius Norwich en 1964 (Allegra Huston). Le 29 janvier 1969, elle décède tragiquement dans un accident de voiture en France, à Dijon, à l'âge de 39 ans.

Although he was married (to Evelyn Keyes), he pursuing her, divorced, and they married in 1950; they have two children: Walter Anthony Huston (who will become a screenwriter and then attorney) and Angelica Huston (who will be a famous actress). Enrica will never embark on an acting career. The couple she formed with John Huston is free: he will have a son out of wedlock with his mistress actress Zoe Sallis in 1962 (Danny Huston), and she will have a daughter with her lover the historian John Julius Norwich in 1964 (Allegra Huston). On January 29, 1969, she tragically died in a car accident in France, in Dijon, at the age of 39.

JANE NIGH 

De son vrai nom Bonnie Lenora "Jane" Nigh, elle naît le 25 février 1925 à Hollywood; sa mère travaille dans la recherche pour un studio de cinéma et elle a une soeur (Nancy) qui deviendra actrice. C'est pendant ses heures de travail comme sténographe dans une usine de défense (pour la Douglas Aircraft) qu'en 1944, elle est découverte par un chasseur de talents, qui lui fait signer un contrat avec les studios de la Fox. Elle démarre timidement une carrière, tout en jouant à la pin-up pour les photographes, remportant des prix pour sa beauté photogénique. Elle jouera au final dans une quarantaine de productions: dans des films (comme La foire aux illusions de Walter Lang, Tragique rendez-vous où elle a comme partenaire George Raft et Ava Gardner), mais aussi des séries (notamment Big Town), jusqu'en 1961, année où elle stoppe sa carrière pour se lancer dans les affaires créant une entreprise de bijoux (Jazzy Jewels). Elle s'est mariée (et à divorcé) trois fois, donnant naissance à quatre enfants (un garçon et trois filles dont une en 1952, décédée 48 heures après être née prématurée) et a beaucoup fait parler les rubriques à potins d'Hollywood pour ses nombreuses conquêtes. En 1991, l'une de ses filles décède dans un accident de voiture, et le contre-coup la menant sans doute à faire un accident vasculaire cérébral dont elle en meurt le 5 octobre 1993 à l'âge de 68 ans.

It was during her working hours as a stenographer in a defense factory (for Douglas Aircraft) that in 1944, she was discovered by a talent scout, who made her sign a contract with the Fox studios. She timidly started a career, while playing pin-up for photographers, winning awards for her photogenic beauty. She will ultimately play in around forty productions: in films (such as Walter Lang's State Fair, Whistel Stop where she has partner George Raft and Ava Gardner), but also TV series (including Big Town), until 1961, when she stopped her career to go into business creating a jewelry company (Jazzy Jewels). She married (and divorced) three times, giving birth to four children (a boy and three girls including one in 1952, who died 48 hours after being born prematurely) and made a lot of the Hollywood gossip columns for his many conquests. In 1991, one of her daughters died in a car accident, leading her probably to have a stroke from which she died on October 5, 1993 at the age of 68.
