12/1945 Voyage dans l'Ouest - Séance de l'autoroute et de la prairie par André De Dienes

Premières séances photos du voyage de Norma Jeane Dougherty vêtue d'un tee-shirt blanc et d'une jupe rouge au motif d'étoiles blanches, avec le photographe André De Dienes début décembre 1945 à Los Angeles.
André de Dienes raconte*: "Nous étions à peine sortis de Los Angeles qu'un motard de la police m'arrêta pour infraction au code de la route. Voyant Norma Jeane assise à mes côtés, il avait dû être jaloux ! Il a dit que je zigzaguait à travers la ligne centrale, et pensait que j'étais drogué. Il m'ordonna de le suivre jusqu'au poste de police ! Je n'étais pas drogué du tout ! Ni même n'avais zigzaguer sur la route ! A l'époque, la procédure était que le conducteur qui avait été arrêté devait se rendre au poste de police pour y payer tout de suite l'amende et pouvoir repartir.
Norma Jeane fut indignée. De sa petite voix douce, elle lui rétorqua que c'était injuste et le  traita d'escroc, affirmant que nous n'avions rien fait de mal. J'ai dit à l'agent de police que ma politique n'était de ne jamais débattre avec la police. Le motard, à le fois sérieux et plaisantant, répondit qu'il ne nous mettrait pas d'amende si Norma Jeane acceptait de passer la nuit au poste avec lui. Je lui donnais vingt dollars et nous reprîmes la route. Ce ne fut que la première d'une longue série de propositions qu'on lui fit tout au long du voyage. C'était incroyable, un peu partout, les hommes lui faisaient des avances. (...)"

André de Dienes tells*: "We were hardly out in the outskirts of Los Angeles, when the police patrol stopped me for faulty driving. Norma Jeane was sitting close to me and the policeman might have felt jealous ! He said, I was zig-zagging across the center dividing line, and thinking I might be intoxicated. He ordered me to follow him to the police station ! I wasn't intoxicated at all ! Nor have we zig-zagged across the center line ! In those times the procedure was that the motorist stopped must follow the police to the headquarter and pay the fine, cash and will be freed again.
Norma Jeane felt very indignent. In her sweet voice, she riposted to the policeman that he was unjust and he was a crook; we have done no faulty driving. I told the patrol man it was my policy never to argue with the police. The man, part seriously, part jokingly, said to Norma Jeane that if she cared to stay there for the night, he would not make us pay the fine. I paid twenty dollars, and we continued the trip. That was only the first proposal she got on that trip. Amazingly, at various places we stopped, people began to proposing something to her. (...)"

Le photographe se souvient*: "Peu après l'incident avec le motard, je lui demandai de poser sur le bord de la grande route, pieds nus, en train de se tresser des couettes. Soudain, pendant que je la prenais en photo, j'eus une étrange révélation quasi mystique. Pointant un doigt vers les petites étoiles de sa jupe rouge, je déclarai qu'elles signifiaient qu'elle deviendrait un jour une personnalité très célèbre ! Une grande star de cinéma ! Je me mis à déblatérer sur sa future vie fabuleuse, sur le fait que la route derrière elle symbolisait sa destinée et que nous étions en train de réaliser les premières images annonçant ses futurs et nombreux succès! "

The photographer remembers*: "After we left the police station, I asked her to stand on the highway, barefeet, fixing her hair in pigtails. While taking her pictures like that, in a sudden, strange phsychic revelation, stemming from my unconscious, over which I absolytely no command, I began pointing at the small white stars on her red skirt, and began prognosticating that those stars meant that some day, she shall become very famous ! A famous movie star ! For a while I was talking, babbling about a future, fabulous life for her, telling almost incoherently that the road behind her symbloizes life, and those moments I took the pictures of her, were the first photos of her futur success to come !"
