C'est la nuit, Mae Martin (Adele Jergens) en peignoir, tourne en rond dans son appartement, quand elle entend le moteur d'une voiture qui s 'arrête dans la rue. Elle regarde à la fenêtre pendant qu'on entend le bruit de la portière de voiture qui claque et la voiture redémarrer; Mae prend un livre, s'asseoit dans le fauteuil et fait semblant de dormir. Sa fille Peggy (Marilyn Monroe) rentre sans faire de bruit et la mine radieuse, elle réveille doucement sa mère lui demandant pourquoi elle n'est pas couchée à cette heure si tardive; Peggy disant qu'il est près de 3 heures. Mae lui demande si elle a passé une bonne soirée et à quel endroit elle était et Peggy lui répond par une attitude éblouie qu'elle a passé un moment merveilleux au Club Ambassy. Mae lui dit qu'elle va se coucher mais Peggy veut lui parler de Randy, en prenant un air méfiant, elle bafouille et ne parvient pas à sortir un mot, ce qui inquiète Mae. Peggy finit par lui avouer que Randy souhaite l'épouser mais qu'elle ne lui a pas encore répondu, souhaitant d'abord avoir le consentement de sa mère, elle lui donnera la réponse le lendemain. Quand Mae lui répond que si elle refuserait, elle se marierait quand même, Peggy lui répond qu'elle ne sait pas. Alors Mae sourit et lui dit qu'elles en reparleront le lendemain matin puis elles partent se coucher.

It's the night, Mae Martin (Adele Jergens) in a bathrobe, is going around in circles in her apartment, when she hears the engine of a car stopping in the street. She looks at the window while the sound of the car door slamming is heard and the car restarting; Mae takes a book in her hands, sits in the chair and pretends to be asleep. Her daughter Peggy (Marilyn Monroe) comes home quietly and looking radiant, she gently wakes up her mother asking her why she hasn't gone to bed at this late hour; Peggy saying it's almost 3 o'clock. Mae asks her if she has passed a good evening and where she was and Peggy replies with a dazzled attitude that she had a wonderful time at Club Embassy. Mae tells her she's going to bed but Peggy wants to talk to her about Randy, looking suspicious, she sputters and can't get a word out, which worries Mae. Peggy ends up confessing to her that Randy wishes to marry her but that she has not answered him yet, first wishing to have her mother's consent, she will give him the answer the next day. When Mae tells her if she would refuse, she would still marry, Peggy replies that she doesn't know. So Mae smiles and tells her they'll talk about it the next morning and then they goe to bed.
