Le photographe et documentariste franco-américain Elliott Erwitt est décédé à l'âge de 95 ans le 29 novembre 2023 à New York. Il était le doyen de l'agence Magnum.
Né à Paris de parents immigrés juifs russes, il passe une grande partie de son enfance en Italie. Sa famille s'installe ensuite deux ans en France puis partent aux États-Unis en 1938, vivant à New York, à Chicago, puis à Los Angeles. Il étudie la photographie et la réalisation cinématographique au Los Angeles City College et à The New School for Social Research, terminant ses études en 1950. Il retourne en Europe, voyage et prend des photographies.
Engagé dans l’armée américaine en 1951, il est assistant-photographe alors qu’il est affecté dans le New Jersey, en Allemagne et en France. À la fin de son service, en 1953, il s’installe à New York.
Elliott Erwitt est encouragé par Edward Steichen et Roy Stryker, qui apprécient son travail. En 1953, Robert Capa invite le jeune artiste à rejoindre l’agence Magnum Photos. Il en sera président durant trois mandats (de 1966 à 1969) et continue d’en être un membre actif. Il débute sa carrière comme photographe indépendant et travaille pour de célèbres magazines américains tels que Look, Life et Holiday.
Au cours de sa carrière, il a documenté des événements sociopolitiques dans ses photographies, comme la visite de Richard Nixon en Union soviétique en 1959, les funérailles de John F. Kennedy en 1963 ou l'investiture de Barack Obama en 2009.
Il reste connu pour son travail photographique autour des chiens qui feront l'objet de la publication de plusieurs livres: Erwitt porte sur eux un regard plein d’humour.
Erwitt réalise aussi des documentaires. Dans les années 1980, il produit 17 programmes de comédies.

Il reste l'un des photographes des plus prolifiques du XXème et début du XXIème siècle: sa carrière, s'étalant sur huit décennies, se comptabilise par près de 600 000 négatifs, dont 6 000 sont conservés par l'agence Magnum.

Franco-American photographer and documentarian Elliott Erwitt died at the age of 95 on November 29, 2023 in New York. He was the dean of the Magnum agency.
Born in Paris to Russian Jewish immigrant parents, he spent a large part of his childhood in Italy. His family then settled in France for two years and then left for the United States in 1938, living in New York, Chicago, then Los Angeles. He studied photography and filmmaking at Los Angeles City College and The New School for Social Research, finishing his studies in 1950. He returned to Europe, traveling and taking photographs.
Enlisted in the American army in 1951, he was an assistant photographer while he was posted in New Jersey, Germany and France. At the end of his service, in 1953, he moved to New York.
Elliott Erwitt was encouraged by Edward Steichen and Roy Stryker, who appreciated his work. In 1953, Robert Capa invited the young artist to join the Magnum Photos agency. He served as president for three terms (from 1966 to 1969) and continued to be an active member. He began his career as a freelance photographer and worked for famous American magazines such as Look, Life and Holiday.
During his career, he documented sociopolitical events in his photographs, such as Richard Nixon's visit to the Soviet Union in 1959, the funeral of John F. Kennedy in 1963 or the inauguration of Barack Obama in 2009.
He remains known for his photographic work about dogs which will be the subject of the publication of several books: Erwitt takes a look at them full of humor.
Erwitt also makes documentaries. In the 1980s, he produced 17 comedy programs.

He remains one of the most prolific photographers of the 20th and early 21st centuries: his career, spanning eight decades, includes nearly 600,000 negatives, of which 6,000 are kept by the Magnum agency.
