A la mi-septembre 1947, la chroniqueuse Louella Parsons rapporte dans ses rubriques des potins d'Hollywood que Marilyn Monroe a été aperçue en compagnie de Charles Faye Leppert, le frère de l'actrice Alice Faye, au restaurant "Seacomber" sur la baie de Malibu.
Charles Faye Leppert a alors 38 ans, divorcé (il a été marrié à l'actrice Bonnie Bannon de 1934 à 1936) et il est officier de police.

In mid-September 1947, columnist Louella Parsons reports in her Hollywood gossip columns that Marilyn Monroe was seen dated with Charles Faye Leppert, brother of actress Alice Faye, at the Seacombers venue in Malibu.
Charles Faye Leppert was then 38 years old, divorced (he was married to actress Bonnie Bannon from 1934 to 1936) and he was a police officer.

Long strapless dress 

Longue robe de soirée sans bretelles, au bustier froncé, à la longue jupe plissée avec une fente à l'ourlet avant, nouée à la taille par une longue ceinture de forme cravate, fermée par une glissière dans le dos, en tissu de soie métallique.
N'existant que des photographies prises en noir et blanc de Marilyn portant la robe, beaucoup pensaient qu'elle était de couleur or; cependant, une robe identique de couleur argentée platine a été vendue aux enchères en 2013. La marque et le styliste de la robe reste inconnus.

Long strapless evening gown, with a gathered bustier, long pleated skirt with a slit at the front hem, tied at the waist with a long tie-shaped belt, closed with a zipper in the back, in metallic silk fabric.
Only existing photographs taken in black and white of Marilyn wearing the dress, many thought that it was gold in color; however, an identical platinum silver-colored dress was auctioned off in 2013. The brand and designer of the dress remains unknown.

Marilyn fait partie de la pléiade d'invités de la Saint-Sylvestre du 31 décembre 1948 à la grande soirée chez Sam Spiegel , producteur d'Hollywood. Marilyn arrive à la soirée avec une veste courte en peluche blanche qu'elle laisse dans un vestiaire, ne portant que la robe pendant la soirée où elle est accompagnée de Fred Karger.

Marilyn is one of the host of New Year's Eve guests from December 31, 1948 to the big party at Sam Spiegel's, Hollywood producer. Marilyn arrives at the party with a short white plush jacket that she leaves in a locker room, wearing only the dress during the party where she is accompanied by Fred Karger.

Elle prend une pose de style pin-up courant 1949 pour l'illustrateur Earl Moran, qui, avant de peindre ses pin-up, prenait en photographie les modèles; il fera une illustration de la pose de Marilyn, avec une robe en couleur or, mais dont le visage de la pin-up qu'il représente est différent de celui de Marilyn; et pour l'autre illustration avec le visage de Marilyn, il change la robe avec laquelle elle a été photographiée mais garde les mêmes chaussures.

She takes a pin-up style pose during the year 1949 for the illustrator Earl Moran, who, before painting his pin-ups, took photographs of the models; he will make an illustration of Marilyn's pose, with a gold color dress, but whose face of the pin-up girl he represents is different from Marilyn's; and for the other illustration he makes with Marilyn's face, he changes the dress with which she was photographed but keeps the same shoes.

La robe reste en fait indissociable à l'image du film La Pêche au trésor sorti en 1949 (tourné en novembre 1948), dans lequel Marilyn apparaît quelques secondes, et dont sa démarche d'ondulation du corps est accentuée par l'effet lamé et scintillant de la robe.

The dress is in fact inseparable from the image of the film Love Happy released in 1949 (shot in november 1948), in which Marilyn appears few seconds, and whose undulating gait of the body is accentuated by the lamé and scintillating effect of the dress.

S'agissait-il d'une tenue de la garde robe personnelle de Marilyn ou l'avait-elle emprunté au département costume de studios de cinéma, nul ne sait.
Une robe très similaire a été proposée à des enchères, la présentant ainsi comme étant probablement la robe qu'elle porte dans Love Happy; le vendeur expliquant qu'il l'avait reçu en cadeau par son ami décédé, qui était un grand collecteur de costumes de films. La robe est dans un état très fragile et abîmée :

Was it an outfit from Marilyn's personal wardrobe or had she borrowed it from the costume department of movie studios, no one knows.
A very similar dress was offered at auction, featuring it as possibly the dress she wears in Love Happy; the seller explaining that he had received it as a gift from his deceased friend, who was a great collector of film costumes. The dress is in a very fragile and damaged state:

 Fin avril / début mai 1949, Marilyn Monroe se rend au studio photo du photographe Tom Kelley situé au 376 North Seward à Hollywood, après avoir retrouvé dans ses affaires la carte de visite qu'il lui avait remis en octobre 1948 (il l'avait rencontrée par hasard sur Sunset Boulevard, à Los Angeles, alors qu'elle venait d'avoir un accident avec sa voiture et qu'elle n'avait pas un sous en poche). Elle a besoin d'argent car après avoir tourné le film La Pêche au trésor, elle ne reçoit aucune autre proposition de l'industrie cinématographique. Elle décide donc de se tourner vers son "ancien" métier: modèle pour photographe.
Il semble qu'elle soit arrivée au studio de Kelley sans avoir pris de rendez-vous. Kelley racontera: "Marilyn est venue un samedi après-midi. Rien de particulier ne la distinguait des dizaines d'autres modèles potentiels. Ses cheveux étaient maintenant blonds roux, longs, bouclés et bouffants autour du visage, le style populaire de la fin des années 1940. Sa jupe était serrée. Son chemisier était très décolleté. Elle portait des chaussures à talons, avec une bride à la cheville. Sa bouche était maquillée comme celle de Joan Crawford, à l'ancienne, et elle n'arrêtait pas d'humidifier ses lèvres."

Le photographe travaille alors sur un projet de publicité pour une marque de bière et le modèle qu’il a engagé vient de se désister. La femme du photographe, Natalie Kelley, amène Marilyn dans une pièce annexe pour retoucher son maquillage et l'aider à se changer; Marilyn enfile son maillot de bain deux pièces noir et blanc de Rose Marie Reid et on lui tend un ballon de plage multicolore. "Je crois que ça devrait aller" déclare Tom Kelley en découvrant Marilyn, qui pose pendant plus d'une heure. Le photographe se souvient qu'elle ne s'est jamais plainte et elle a même refusé de faire une pause quand cela lui a été proposé. Marilyn a été payée 30 $ pour sa séance de pose.
Deux semaines plus tard, les fabricants de Pabst Beer reçoivent leur nouvelle affiche intitulée "Swimming" et le directeur commercial félicite le photographe en posant des questions sur le modèle. Tom Kelley est conforté par l'opinion qu'il s'était fait de Marilyn en la rencontrant la première fois: elle est d'une incroyable photogénie. D'ailleurs, la publicité pour la bière va attirer l'oeil d'un autre directeur commercial, John Baumgarten, qui fabrique des calendriers à Chicago. C'est ainsi que Marilyn posera nue pour Tom Kelley: les fameuses photos de la séance rouge du calendrier "Golden Dreams".

L'affiche publicitaire Pabst Beer reste à ce jour introuvable et inconnue. On ne connait qu'une seule photographie (en noir et blanc) prise lors de cette séance.

Late April / early May 1949, Marilyn Monroe goes to to photographer Tom Kelley's photo studio located at 376 North Seward in Hollywood, after finding in her belongings the business card he has given her in October 1948 (he met her by chance on Sunset Boulevard, in Los Angeles, when she has just had an accident with her car and she had no money in her pocket). She needs the money because after shooting the movie Love Happy, she doesn't receive any other offers from the film industry. She therefore decides to turn to her "old" profession: model for photographer.
It seems she arrives at Kelley's studio without having made an appointment. Kelley recounts: "Marilyn came in one Saturday afternoon. There wasn't anything in particular to distinguish her from the scores of other would-be models. Her hair was now reddish-blonde, worn long, curly and fluffed around the face, a style popular in the late 1940's. Her skirt was tight. Her blouse was very low-cut. She wore high-heeled shoes, ankle strapped. Her mouth was made up like Joan Crawford's, old-style, and she kept on moistening her lips."

The photographer is then working on an advertising project for a brand of beer and the model he has hired has just withdrawn. The photographer's wife, Natalie Kelley, takes Marilyn to an adjoining room to touch up her make-up and help her change; Marilyn puts on her black and white two-piece swimsuit by Rose Marie Reid and a multicolored beach ball is handed to her. "I think it should be fine" declares Tom Kelley discovering Marilyn, who poses for more than an hour. The photographer remembers that she never complained and even refused to take a break when it was offered to her. Marilyn was paid $30 for her posing session.
Two weeks later, the makers of Pabst Beer receive their new poster titled "Swimming" and the business manager congratulates the photographer asking about the model. Tom Kelley is comforted by the opinion he had on Marilyn when he met her the first time: she is incredibly photogenic. Moreover, the advertisement for the beer will attract the eye of another sales manager, John Baumgarten, who manufactures calendars in Chicago. This is how Marilyn will pose naked for Tom Kelley: the famous photos of the red sitting for the "Golden Dreams" calendar.
The Pabst Beer advertising poster remains untraceable and unknown to this day. We know of only one photograph (in black and white) taken during this session.

Elle le porte ensuite pendant sa tournée de promotion du film La Pêche au trésor. D'abord le 13 juin 1949 à la piscine de Rockford, puis début juillet 1949 à son hôtel à Détroit.

She wears it then during her promotional tour for the movie Love Happy. First on June 13, 1949 at the Rockford swimming pool, then at the beginning of July 1949 at her hotel in Detroit.

Ce maillot -surnommé "The Swish" ("le frou-frou" en français) - était mis en vente dans diverses boutiques aux Etats-Unis; certains journaux ont publié des publicités en 1947 et 1948. Il s'agissait d'un maillot de bain de la garde robe personnelle de Marilyn qui l'avait acheté (il était vendu au prix de 16,95 Dollars). Il semble qu'il s'agissait d'un maillot de bain plutôt populaire à la vue du nombre d'encart publicitaire présentant la tenue dans les journaux locaux.

This swimsuit - nicknamed "The Swish" - was on sale in various shops in the United States; some newspapers published advertisements in 1947 and 1948. It was a swimsuit from Marilyn's personal wardrobe who had bought it (it was sold at the price of 16.95 Dollars). It seems that it was a rather popular swimsuit from the number of advertising inserts featuring the outfit in local newspapers.

Début décembre 1947 au Club Mocambo de Los Angeles, Marilyn Monroe discute tranquillement avec Steve Crane (acteur et restaurateur, ancien mari de Lana Turner et playboy notoire à Hollywood). Sauf que cette discussion rapprochée ne plaît pas du tout à Lila Leeds, jeune starlette qui fréquente Crane (ils sont fiancés). Lila Leeds arrive alors en furie vers Marilyn qu'elle pousse violemment, pour ensuite asséner un coup de poing à son fiancé Steve Crane ! Marilyn Monroe s'en trouvera alors choquée.
Cet incident sera publié dans les colonnes à potins de la presse: l'histoire se serait produite avant le 11 décembre 1947, date à laquelle la presse commence à relater les faits.
Lila Leeds continuera à alimenter la rubrique à potins: elle se montrera encore violente à d'autres soirées (elle se bagarre avec une mannequin, Kitty Hamilton, au club Ciro's début 1948). Surtout, elle fume de la marijuana et sera arrêtée, avec l'acteur Robert Mitchum et d'autres amis, pendant qu'ils sont tous en train de fumer chez elle le 01er septembre 1948: l'histoire fera grand scandale, Lila passera 60 jours en prison et cela mettra définitivement un terme à sa carrière.

Except that this close discussion does not at all please Lila Leeds, a young starlet who is dating Crane (they are engaged). Lila Leeds then arrives in a rage towards Marilyn whom she pushes violently, to then punch her fiancé Steve Crane ! Marilyn Monroe will then find herself shocked.
This incident will be published in the gossip columns of the press: the story would have happened before December 11, 1947, the date on which the press began to report the facts.
Lila Leeds will continue to feed the gossip section: she will still be violent at other parties (she fights with a model, Kitty Hamilton, at the Ciro's club at the beginning of 1948). Above all, she smokes marijuana and will be arrested, along with actor Robert Mitchum and other friends, while they are all smoking at home on September 01, 1948: the story will cause great scandal, Lila will pass 60 days in prison and it put an end to his career for good.
