Ces blondes mythiques

puretrendCes blondes mythiques
article publié sur puretrend.com le 5 juillet 2011

Marilyn Monroe, Brigitte Bardot, Pamela Anderson.

Dressing - Robe Lamée Or de Travilla

Robe Lamé Or
Gold Lamé Dress

William_Travilla-dress_gold-1952-film-GPB-sc05-studio-by_kornman-1a

Who doesn't know this photograph of Marilyn Monroe, in a black background studio, hands behind hips, eyes half-closed and mouth half-open, wearing this gold lamé dress ? This is one of the symbolic outfits in which Marilyn Monroe is represented: a gold lamé dress scooped up to the navel and open back.

Marilyn et la robe
Marilyn and the gown

This gold lamé dress was designed by 20th Century Fox designer and fashion designer William "Billy" Travilla for the film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, filmed in 1952. It is said that the dress was literally sewn onto Marilyn's body, because it does not have buttons, but a thin zipper in the back.

On November 08, 1952, Marilyn takes the hairdressing and make-up tests for the film; in one of the photographs used as a test, she is wearing the dress. But the fittings of the dress takes place on November 12, 1952 where she wears the dress with and without a belt.

In the film, the scene in which Marilyn wears this dress is very brief, and we can only see her from the back, behind a window ! The scene was probably cut short because the outfit seemed far too provocative and the image of the star in this outfit on the big screen, was far from pleasing the censors. Especially since Marilyn dances -with Charles Coburn- wiggling her buttocks suggestively.

After the filming of "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes", in 1953, Marilyn Monroe wears the dress for the "Miss Press Club" award ceremony, organized by the Los Angeles Press Club. After the official ceremony, where Marilyn wore a black dress, an award ceremony is unofficially organized in the studio, where the journalist Walter Winchell poses alongside Marilyn in a studio; the star this time wearing the lamé dress. No doubt this series of photographs were taken in the studios of Fox and perhaps, during the filming of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes - Although Marilyn's hairstyle is different, because in the scene of the film, her hair is squared smooth. But the neckline of the dress still goes down to the navel.

On February 17, 1953, Marilyn Monroe borrows this remarkable dress from the production studio again to wear it during the ceremony organized by Photoplay magazine of "Rapid Rise to Stardom in 1952" where she receives "The New Star Award" at the Beverly Hills Hotel.
The dress was then retouched for the occasion: the neckline was slightly raised, to go down to the chest and no longer to the navel.

William_Travilla-dress_gold-1953-02-09-photoplay-cap

During the ceremony, Marilyn will trigger an uproar whose origin is none other than this famous dress, which scandalized the prudish actress Joan Crawford, present in the audience, who will say into the press that: "It was like a burlesque show. (...) The publicity has gone too far. She is making the mistake of believing her publicity. Someone should make her see the light." And journalist James Bacon will say that "when Marilyn squirmed in front of the audience to reach the podium, her buttocks looked like two little puppies fighting under a sheet of silk".

However, Joan Crawford has worn a very similar dress in 1934 for the film No More Ladies (advertising photos by George Hurrell), a creation of the costume designer Adrian: the same draped gold lamé pattern, with a deep neckline and completely bare back.

Naissance de la robe de Travilla
Birth of the Travilla dress

William Travilla was inspired by one of his earlier creations for the Fox: in 1951, he was indeed in charge of the costumes for the film Dream Boat with Ginger Rogers. The couturier thus created for the actress Ginger Rogers a lamé dress with thin straps, pleated and embellished with a slanted pan.

When Fox asked Travilla to design a number of costumes for Gentlemen Prefer Blondes in 1952, Travilla offered offered - among all the other designs - the sketch of the dress previously created for Ginger. But the dress is not chosen for the film.

The dress and replicas made by Travilla

The costume designer William Travilla created many "replicas" of the dress worn by Marilyn, which for many people, it was difficult to know what had become of THE original dress of Marilyn. He created identical replicas of the same gold color as much as replicas of other colors; based on exact measurements of the original.
However, these replicas are different from the dress worn by Marilyn at the place of the crossing of the neckline at the navel: that of Marilyn had five kinds of pearls in the shape of a cross (in fact, it is an ornamental brooch of 5 brass balls), that one does not find on the replicas which have a bow.

Costume collector John LeBold claimed to own the original dress and he lends some pieces from his collection to museums during exhibitions: such as at the Morris Museum (New Jersey, USA) from October to December 2010:

At the "Profiles In History" Auction on December 11, 2018, the dress, estimated at between $ 100,000 and $ 150,000, will sell for $ 100,000. This is the original dress worn by Marilyn, because it had a label with her name "1-64-12-1370 Marilyn Monroe A-698-11" but has undergone several restorations.

Même style
Same style

Please note, this dress is not to be confused with another dress of the same style that Marilyn wore. Indeed, the costume tests where Marilyn wears the famous gold lamé dress for the film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes took place on November 12, 1952. And Marilyn wore a strangely identical dress (or is it just a bustier) - and yet also very different - in golden tone and pleated, matched with a sheath on the shoulders on some shots, for a photo shoot in a studio, and which, in view of Marilyn's hairstyle (short hair with wavy locks in the roll), would date from the beginning of 1952.

Bombshell bargain: Garage sale yields never-before-seen pictures of Marilyn Monroe

Bombshell bargain: Garage sale yields never-before-seen pictures of Marilyn Monroe

article publié sur dailymail.co.uk
le 30 mai 2011, par Jennifer Madison

When a U.S. photographer bought two envelopes of negatives at a 1980 garage sale, he scored the bargain of a lifetime - but he didn't even know it.

Anton Fury has unveiled never-before-seen images of a young Marilyn Monroe, which he purchased for $2 at a sale in Parsippany, New Jersey.

One envelope contained eight images, including several of the bikini-clad actress striking poses at a poolside photoshoot, and a photo of the famous blonde lying in a bed with a mystery man by her side.

The second envelope contained about 70 negatives of late actress Jayne Mansfield.

dailymail02
What a bargain! The negatives were purchased for a mere $2 at a New Jersey garage sale

It wasn't until Fury took the packages home, and gave the black-and-white negatives a closer look that he realised his discovery - which he has kept secret for more than three decades, he told CNN.

Fury recalled: 'I found an envelope of negatives, didn't know what they were, but I realised they were old

'I took it home, put them on the lightboard with a loupe, and, needless to say, these are Marilyn,' he said. 'That was probably my greatest garage sale discovery ever.'

He kept the findings under wraps until last week, when he took them to Beverly Hills art dealer and appraiser David W Streets, who is experienced with Monroe archives.

Pre-fame: Art appraiser David W Streets believes the photos were taken in 1950. Monroe would have been 24

While he is certain the images of the world's most famous blonde are authentic, questions remain over who shot them and exactly when they were taken.

He suspects, in 1950, before her breakout roles in The Asphalt Jungle and All About Eve, when she sported a shorter hair style.

Monroe would have been 24.

Streets told CNN: 'I've looked for early photographs, early test shots, magazine shots, books, and haven't been able to find anything yet, so the mystery we're just beginning to unravel.'

dailymail05
Rare finds: While one envelope contained the images of Monroe (seen here), a second contained about 70 negatives of late actress Jayne Mansfield

dailymail06
A lead: Monroe (seen here) and Mansfield were known to be friends, which could help art dealers uncover more details about the photos

He is sure, however, the images were taken in Los Angeles, citing the 1950s architecture and Hollywood Hills seen sloping in the background.

Streets is investigating leads as to who took the photos, noting there is one man pictured in both the Monroe and Mansfield photographs, who could be the photographer.

He explained: 'We know that Monroe and Mansfield were here working at the same time, were contemporaries and friends. So, there's an intertanglement there that we're going to unravel.'

For sale? Fury has not ruled out selling the images although he risks the mystery photographer revealing himself to make copyright claims by going public

Fury has not ruled out putting up the images for sale to the public, although making his findings public he risks the mystery photographer revealing himself to make copyright claims.

Fury said: 'That's kind of what we're trying to figure out. There's way more questions than there are answers at this point. We don't know where this is going to lead.

Marilyn Monroe photos found at garage sale still a mystery

Never-seen photos of Marilyn Monroe ?

article publié sur cnn.com

 STORY HIGHLIGHTS
    * Photographer found Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield negatives in 1980
    * Who shot them and how they ended up at a garage sale is unknown, man says
    * Finder, art appraiser David Streets welcome public help in solving the mystery

cnn01

Los Angeles (CNN) -- Photographer Anton Fury's hobby of searching weekend garage sales for collectible toys led him to dozens of apparently unpublished photos of a young Marilyn Monroe.

Fury has allowed CNN to publish the images just days before what would have been Monroe's 85th birthday. They apparently were taken during a photo session before she was well known.

"I found an envelope of negatives, didn't know what they were, but I realized they were old," Fury said. He paid $2 for the folder, which contained two envelopes of black-and-white negatives.

That was in Parsippany, New Jersey, in 1980, when Fury says he was "a fledgling photographer."

"I took it home, put them on the lightboard with a loupe and, needless to say, these are Marilyn," he said. "That was probably my greatest garage sale discovery ever."

The second envelope was filled with about 70 negatives of actress Jayne Mansfield.

cnn04

Fury held onto the photographs for the last three decades, not knowing much about them.

"The only thing we're sure of is who," he said. "We don't know where, we don't know why, we don't know when, we don't know who shot them. But we do know it is Marilyn."

Fury flew to Los Angeles this week to show the images to David W. Streets, a Beverly Hills art dealer and appraiser experienced with Monroe photos.

Monroe was one of the most photographed women ever, but Streets suspects these photos are from her early years, soon after she cut her hair and evolved into the iconic look most people associate with her.

"I've looked for early photographs, early test shots, magazine shots, books, and haven't been able to find anything yet, so the mystery we're just beginning to unravel," Streets said.

Streets' best guess for now is the photos were taken in 1950, a breakout year for the nearly unknown Monroe because of her minor roles in "The Asphalt Jungle" and "All About Eve."

"I know they were taken here in Los Angeles," which we know "from the backgrounds that we see in the photos," Streets said. "You see Hollywood Hills, Hollywood 1950s architecture."

There are more questions than answers, though.

"For me as an appraiser and as a researcher, I want people to call, I want people to e-mail and say, 'This is where it is, this is what it is, this is who I think took it,' " Streets said.

One clue that could be important is the coincidence of a man seen in both the Monroe and Mansfield photographs. It is possible he was the photographer for both sessions, Streets said.

"We know that Monroe and Mansfield were here working at the same time, were contemporaries and friends," Streets said. "So, there's an intertanglement there that we're going to unravel and see where the mystery leads."

Monroe, who would have been 24 in 1950, wore two bathing suits, including a bikini, and short pants during the poolside photo shoot.

One risk Fury runs as he brings his garage sale find to the public, and possibly for sale, is that someone could make a legal claim to the photos, which are possibly still protected by copyright laws even after 60 years.

"That's kind of what we're trying to figure out," Fury said. There's way more questions than there are answers at this point. We don't know where this is going to lead."

Photographe: Harold Lloyd

Harold Lloyd took Marilyn Monroe in photography in 1952 and in 1953: behind the scenes, he photographs her at work; first during a photo session with Philippe Halsman, then during a shoot of an advertisement.
Harold owned a huge villa in Beverly Hills called "GreenAcres", composed of forty-four rooms, including twenty-six bathrooms, as well as twelve fountains and gardens (listed in the National Register of Historic Places) and this is in that heavenly setting that took place one the photo shoots of the advertising shot with Marilyn.

Harold Lloyd
(1893 - 1971)
