 LOT #89193 - Marilyn Monroe Signed Check Held in Matte and Frame (1960).
Vintage original signed check for $149.92 from Marilyn Monroe Productions, dated July 15, 1960. Marilyn's signature is in the bottom right corner with an ink pen. Matted and framed to an overall 23" x 15.5". Held in a nice matte and frame featuring a beach photo of the legendary actress and a plaque reading "Colonial Trust Company cheque made out to Paul A. Reilly & Co. Inc. for $149.92 Signed by Marilyn Monroe." Displays some wear and staining from the "Paid" stamp and a tear in the upper right corner of the check. The silver painted frame is chipping along the edges. Comes with an LOA from PSA.

 LOT #89192 - Group of Communications Between Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe (1952 & 1954).
Vintage original group of personal communications from Joe DiMaggio to Marilyn Monroe, including telegrams dated April 1952 and phone messages dated March 4, 1954. These items provide a unique glimpse into their private life and DiMaggio's care and concern for Monroe during a challenging period. The collection includes:
(1) Telegram from Joe DiMaggio to Marilyn Monroe: "Ben called with update. Praying for a fast recovery. Will call in A.M. Love, Joe.",
(2) Telegram from Joe DiMaggio to Marilyn Monroe: "Missed your call this afternoon. Will call tonight after filming. Wish I was in LA with you instead of doing this tv broadcast. Love, Joe.",
(3) Telegram from Joe DiMaggio to Marilyn Monroe: "When does the shooting for Niagara start? Please send shooting schedule when studio notifies you. Love, Joe.",
(4) Telegram from Joe DiMaggio to Marilyn Monroe: "Janet & Roger send their well wishes. Love, Joe.",
(5) Telegram from Joe DiMaggio to Marilyn Monroe: "The Fellas down at the lodge send their love. Love, Joe.",
and (5) phone messages with the headline "while you were out" from Marilyn Monroe to Joe DiMaggio, all dated on the same day, March 4, 1954.

 The set also includes several black and white copies of a photograph of Marilyn reading a "get well soon" card and a copy of The Joe DiMaggio Collection at Public Auction catalog excerpt for lot 639 from Hunt Inc. Auctions. Note that the original lot catalog is not included. These communications are dated around the time Marilyn Monroe was hospitalized at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in Beverly Hills after completing filming for The Seven Year Itch. At Cedars in Beverly Hills, she underwent appendectomy surgery on April 28, 1952. Despite efforts to maintain privacy, Monroe was frequently pursued by photographers and the paparazzi, illustrating the intense media scrutiny she faced. This collection documents the thoughtful and loving interactions between DiMaggio and Monroe, especially through the telegrams he sent her while she was alone in the hospital and also at the Beverly Hills home they shared. These communications also serve as a poignant reminder of Monroe's enduring status as a cultural icon and the personal struggles she faced. The telegrams measure 6.5" x 4.5", and the phone messages measure 5" x 2.8", adding a tangible dimension to this snapshot of Hollywood history.

Vintage gelatin silver borderless semi-gloss double-weight 11" x 9.5" photograph of Marilyn Monroe [Norma Jeane Dougherty] on Malibu Beach, Los Angeles, 1946, by André de Dienes, with red and black rubber stamps PHOTO ANDRE DIENES on verso, 1946, printed no later than 1955. Notations by Dienes "Marilyn Monroe interprets:" and "MEDITATION" and "LET NEITHER FEAR OR DOUBT OVERSHADOW YOUR CLEAR SENSE AND CALM TRUST" in blue ink on verso. Only one set of prints was hand-notated by Dienes, printed by the photographer in his darkroom.  LOT #89191 - Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio Signed Card (1953). 

Vintage signed page by Monroe and DiMaggio, dated August 17, 1953. Signed at Banff Springs, Canada during the filming of River of No Return, the 1954 American Western film directed by Otto Preminger and starring Robert Mitchum and Marilyn Monroe.
Monroe and DiMaggio, the famous American Baseball center fielder famously eloped in 1954, shortly after nine months later Monroe filed for divorce. Collector's notes on the verso. Measures 3" x 5" and exhibits some age and toning. Includes LOA's from Beckett and PSA.

 LOT #89183 - Playboy Volume 1, #1 Featuring Marilyn Monroe (HMH Publishing, 1953).
Vintage original premiere issue of the iconic men's magazine, featuring the incomparable Marilyn Monroe on the cover as "Sweetheart of the Month," with her famous nude color image by Tom Kelley on page 19. All points of authenticity are present including the black square printed on the upper right corner of the front cover and a two staple binding. Printed mostly in black-and-white with color pages scattered throughout. Measures 8.5" x 11". Toning and very mild soiling or abrasion, with some separation to covers at spine base, and a small tear on the bottom of page 29/30. A beautiful example of this highly collectible first issue. Comes with COA from Heritage Auctions.

 LOT #89194  - Marilyn Monroe Pair of Personal Ferragamo Heels Donated by Anna Strasberg to Sophia Loren for AIDS Research.

Vintage original Ferragamo brand black leather pumps with 3-inch heel, size 7 ½ B. Both retain internal markings "PE-1345-7½ -B-111-" in black ink. Includes a copy of the letter from Anna Strasberg (Mrs. Lee Strasberg) to Sophia Loren, dated March 27, 1989, donating these Ferragamo pumps as well as a dress from "the personal effects of Marilyn Monroe...to The Research for Aids, University of Miami...".

Also includes original orange Sotheby's tag dated August 22, 1989. Shoes exhibit age, wear and handling with some scuffing. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.

 LOT #89195 - The Misfits (United Artists, 1961), Marilyn Monroe "Roslyn Taber" Stand-In Cherry Dress. 

Vintage original halter-style, knee length crème dress with repeating red single cherry with green stem pattern. Adorned with bows at the shoulders with zipper closure at back and pleated at waist on one side. The bodice is unlined whereas the wrapped skirting retains crepe lining. Worn by Marilyn Monroe's stand-in Evelyn Moriarty and matched to a behind-the-scenes image taken during production of the classic John Huston-directed film penned by Arthur Miller.

Designed by Dorothy Jeakins but also attributed to Jean Louis. Exhibiting age, handling, minor staining and some dye transfer and bias separation. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.

 LOT #89189 - Marilyn Monroe Extremely Early Contract Revision, Signed As Norma Jeane Dougherty.
Vintage original 1-page 8.5" x 11" typed contract revision on Twentieth Century Fox letterhead, dated September 9, 1946, a five paragraph agreement outlining the details of the star's requested amendments to her payment schedule at the studio, signed by her in blue fountain pen ink "Norma Jeane Dougherty", and by the Fox paymaster at the time, "A.W. DeWeese".

This is the legal acknowledgement of fledgling Norma Jeane's request to stagger her very first studio contracted salary more slowly than normal, the particulars of which are underlined in pencil, the casualness of execution suggesting this may have been done by Marilyn herself, though no evidence exists to prove it. Perhaps she was afraid of spending it too quickly, being the first real money she was likely to have earned up to this point. Not merely crucial as one of the absolute earliest documents signed by the neophyte starlet the world would soon come to know as Marilyn Monroe, but arguably more significant in its revelation of her budding self-determination to already, at this very naissance, to control aspects of her career. Lightly age toned around margins, with one tiny age spot near lower right corner, else well-archived and unabused. Comes with an LOA from PSA.

Marilyn Monroe racontera ne pas avoir pu découvrir le pays comme elle l'aurait souhaité (via des entretiens accordés à Ben Hecht en 1954 qui seront publées sous forme de feuilleton en 1955 dans le magazine "The Australian Women's Weekly" puis édités dans le livre "Confessions inachevées"): "Mes voyages se sont toujours passés de la même façon. Où que j'aille et quelles que soient les raisons de mes déplacements, je ne vois jamais rien finalement. Devenir une vedette de cinéma, c'est vivre dans un tourbillon. Quand vous voyagez, vous emportez le tourbillon avec vous.
Vous ne voyez ni les habitants du pays, ni les paysages. Vous voyez essentiellement le même agent de presse, le même genre de reporters venus vous interviewer et les mêmes décors prévus pour les photos. Je pensais que ce serait différent au Japon parce que le studio avait coupé tous les ponts avec moi. Le service publicité avait reçu des consignes très strictes: abandonner toute publicité Monroe, appliquer la consigne: pas-un-mot-sur-Monroe. Joe ne cacha pas sa satisfaction, mais elle fut de courte durée. A peine le studio m'avait-il éliminée que mon nom commençait à s'étaler en capitales à la une des journaux. Celui de Joe également. (...) Le Japon allait ainsi s'ajouter à la liste des pays dont je ne devais rien voir."

Marilyn Monroe will tell not having been able to discover the country as she would have liked (via interviews given to Ben Hecht in 1954 which were published in serial form in 1955 in the magazine "The Australian Women's Weekly" then published in the book " My Story"): "My travels have always been of the same kind. No matter where I've gone or why I've gone there it ends up that I never see anything. Becoming a movie star is living on a merry-go-round. When you travel, you take the merry-go-round with you.
You don’t see natives or new scenery. You see chiefly the same press agent, the same sort of interviewers, and the same picture layouts of yourself. I thought Japan would be different because the studio had temporarily wiped its hands of me. The Publicity Department had received instructions to spike all Monroe publicity. I was to be given the don’t-mention-her-name treatment. Joe was happy to hear this, but he didn't stay long. From the minute the studio washed its hands of me my name started popping out of frontpage headlines. Joe's too. (...) Japan turned out to be another country I never saw."

La tournée des bases américaines pour Marilyn
Marilyn suit les déplacements professionnels de Joe et de Lefty O'Doul qui participent à des entraînements de baseball dans plusieurs stades. Dès leur départ de San Francisco, Joe annonce aux reporters présents à l'aéroport que Marilyn ira rendre visite aux soldats GI's soignés dans les hôpitaux au Japon.
Comme l'avaient fait Joe et Lefty lors de leur précédente venue au Japon en 1951, Marilyn se rend dans quelques hôpitaux de l'armée américaine postés au Japon:
- l'hôpital militaire américain de Tokyo (l'hôpital n° 8167 réquisitionné par l'armée, qui a été depuis renommé "Hôpital International St Luke" qui se trouve à 2,2 km de l'hôtel Imperial);
- l'hôpital de l'armée américaine de Kyushu à Fukuoka (le 118ème hôpital et peut être aussi le 8162e hôpital, un hôpital de Hakata réquisitionné par l'armée, dans le quartier Chūō de Fukuoka);
- la base aérienne d'Itazuke à Saitosaki (le Camp Brady);
- et l'hôpital n°8009 de l'armée américaine d'Osaka (à l'origine hôpital de la Croix-Rouge d'Osaka réquisitionné par l'armée dans le quartier de Tennoji d'Osaka).
Quand Marilyn et Joe quittent Fukuoka pour se rendre à Hiroshima, ils rendent visitent à la compagnie 6160th Air Base Wing, basée à l'aéroport d'Itasuki de Fukuoka, avant de prendre leur vol.

Marilyn's Tour of American Bases
Marilyn follows the business trips of Joe and Lefty O'Doul who participate in baseball practices in several stadiums. As soon as they leave San Francisco, Joe announces to the reporters at the airport that Marilyn is going to visit GI soldiers being treated in hospitals in Japan.
As Joe and Lefty had done during their previous visit to Japan in 1951, Marilyn goes to some American army hospitals stationed in Japan:
- the American military hospital in Tokyo (hospital no. 8167 requisitioned by the army, which has since been renamed "St Luke's International Hospital" which is 2.2 km from the Imperial Hotel),
- the Kyushu US Army Hospital in Fukuoka (the 118th General Hospital and perhaps also the 8162nd hospital, a hospital in Hakata requisitioned by the army, in the Chūō district of Fukuoka),
- Itazuke Air Base in Saitosaki (Camp Brady),
- and Osaka US Army Hospital No. 8009 (originally Osaka Red Cross Hospital requisitioned by the army in the Tennoji district of Osaka).
When Marilyn and Joe leave Fukuoka to go to Hiroshima, they visit the 6160th Air Base Wing, based at Fukuoka Itasuki Airport, before boarding their flight.

Joe DiMaggio et Lefty O'Doul ont délivré des enseignements de baseball dans une petite dizaine de stades différents, parmi lesquels:
- au stade de baseball de Kashii à Fukuoka pour l'équipe des Shochiku Robins;
- au stade de baseball d'Hiroshima pour les équipes de Hiroshima Toyo Carp et des Hanshin Tigers (le seul entraînement où Marilyn les a accompagnés publiquement. Sa venue au stade va détourner les regards du public qui ne se focalise que sur Marilyn. Elle n'apparaîtra donc plus en public aux entraînements de Joe mais le suivra en toute discrétion à d'autres déplacements en restant dans une voiture à l'écart);
- au stade Hanshin Kōshien à Nishinomiya pour l'équipe des Hanshin Tigers ;
- au stade de baseball Kasuga de Nara pour l'équipe des Dragons Chunichi;
- au stade Kirisho d'Akashi à Hyōgo-ku (à 5km de Kobe) pour les Giants.

Joe DiMaggio and Lefty O'Doul provided baseball lessons in around ten different stadiums, including:
- at the Kashii baseball stadium in Fukuoka for the Shochiku Robins team;
- at the Hiroshima baseball stadium for the Hiroshima Toyo Carp and Hanshin Tigers teams (the only training where Marilyn accompanied them publicly. Her coming to the stadium will distract the public who only focuses on Marilyn. - Marilyn and Joe would have been received at the American Embassy (at 1 Chome-10-5 Akasaka, in the Minato district) and would have participated in a television program recorded in the building of the "Nippon Television Network Corporation" in Kojimachi, in the Chiyoda district. They would have climbed to the top of the building, where a large antenna tower is installed on the roof, nicknamed the "Broadcast Observatory" because the tower is 73 meters high, to admire a wide view of the city of Tokyo from the sky and see Mount Fuji.
[nb: There is unfortunately no trace of these visits, which is rather surprising because Marilyn's media trips were scrutinized by reporters; it is possible that Joe only went there with Lefty O Doul and that Marilyn stayed at the hotel to rest.]

This necklace being too short for Marilyn's neck size (she wears it at the press conference on February 3), she would have brought it back to the store to exchange it (rumor has it that she would have exchanged it for a watch that she gives to Joe).

Marilyn then goes to the jewelry store Matoba Pearl Jewelry (shop run by a Japanese woman, Teru Matoba, which is located in the basement of the Nikkatsu International Hall hotel which is a 5-minute walk from the Imperial hotel) to purchase a necklace of Akoya pearls made by Mikimoto, which she wears at the end of her stay (and later for the rest of the year 1954).

The day of their arrival in Japan, Marilyn and Joe stay in two suites at the Imperial Hotel: number n°244 which is a room and n°248 which is a reception lounge.
It is at this hotel that a crowd of reporters and visitors welcome them on the day of their arrival in Japan and where Marilyn greets from a balcony the mass of crowds outside (February 1), as well as the coming of 75 journalists for the press conference given by the couple (February 2, in the lobby of the Wright building) and an evening cocktail (February 3, in the large banquet room).
Marilyn and Joe return to the Imperial Hotel at the end of their stay, to spend their last night on Japanese soil (the night of February 22 to 23) which will be a restless and worrying night: Marilyn is increasingly ill , she coughs and has a high fever.

 L’édifice initial avait ouvert en 1890 puis, pour remplacer la structure en bois d’origine, les propriétaires firent appel à l'architecte américain Frank Lloyd Wright qui reconstruit l'hôtel de 1919 à 1923 avec des fondations en béton armé, pierres et briques pour résister aux tremblements de terre et incendies qui ont ravagé à plusieurs reprises l'édifice par le passé et le toit de l’Hôtel recouvert de minces plaques de cuivre. L'architecte s'est inspiré du style néo-Maya avec une grande structure pyramidale et des décorations copiées sur des motifs mayas. Il conçoit aussi les meubles. Des cours intérieures sont végétalisées et un grand bassin de poissons se trouve devant l'entrée principale. L'hôtel comptait alors 280 chambres; une annexe a été inaugurée le 01er décembre 1954 permettant l'ajout de 200 chambres puis une autre annexe en 1958 avec 450 chambres supplémentaires. Au sein de l'hôtel, se trouvait un restaurant et des commerces (comme une bijouterie de luxe).
L'hôtel est ensuite tombé en ruine (notamment par l'affaissement des sols) et a été démoli en 1968 (seuls la façade et les bassins ont été conservés) et un autre hôtel est reconstruit au même emplacement depuis 1970. Mais il va être à nouveau démoli avec un projet de reconstruction de l'hôtel en forme d'une grande tour qui devrait voir le jour en 2036.

The initial building opened in 1890 then, to replace the original wooden structure, the owners called on the American architect Frank Lloyd Wright who rebuilt the hotel from 1919 to 1923 with reinforced concrete foundations, stones and bricks to resist the earthquakes and fires which have repeatedly ravaged the building in the past and the roof of the Hotel covered with thin copper plates. The architect was inspired by the neo-Maya style with a large pyramidal structure and decorations copied from Mayan motifs. He designs also furnitures. Interior courtyards are planted with plants and a large fish pond is located in front of the main entrance. The hotel then had 280 rooms; an annex was inaugurated on December 1, 1954 allowing the addition of 200 rooms then another annex in 1958 with 450 additional rooms. Within the hotel, there was a restaurant and shops (such as a luxury jewelry store).
The hotel then fell into ruin (in particular due to the subsidence of the soil) and was demolished in 1968 (only the facade and the pools were preserved) and another hotel has been rebuilt on the same location since 1970. But it will be demolished again with a project to rebuild the hotel in the form of a large tower which should be finished in 2036.

When Marilyn was married to Arthur Miller (from 1956 to 1961), the couple spends time in Miller's house in rural Roxbury (in Connecticut, in the Northeast of the United States) who wanted to rebuild it. In 1957, Marilyn approached Frank Lloyd Wright who designed an architectural project for an extravagant villa in a circular shape with large bay windows and a large swimming pool but Miller didn't like the proposal which he considered too expensive and he didn't want to embark on a complete renovation. The plans will serve as architectural support for the Waikapu Country Club built in 1993 in Hawaii.

 Créé par Kishichiro Okura qui admirait le mode de vie de l'aristocratie britannique qu'il avait découvert lors de ses études en Angleterre, il fait d'abord construire un parcours de golf (Oshima) en 1928 puis, pour offrir un lieu d 'hébergement à une clientèle d'élite, fait ouvrir un hôtel en 1936 qui comporte à l'origine 62 chambres (puis 140 chambres en 1954) et l'espace contient une piscine, un court de tennis, le tout entouré d'un jardin de 1500 ares et des parcours de golf (Fuji et Oshima). L'endroit surnommé "le Baron" en référence à Okura, est épargné des bombardements pendant la seconde guerre mondiale et devient un lieu de villégiature prestigieux. Okura a choisi un emplacement idyllique offrant un paysage unique et splendide: le complexe hôtelier surplombe la mer de Sagami, et l'on y distingue le mont Fuji, la chaîne de montagnes Tanzawa, ainsi que le mont Daisen, Shonan, la péninsule de Miura, la baie de Tokyo, la péninsule de Boso, Oshima et sept îles d'Izu.

 Created by Kishichiro Okura who admired the way of life of the British aristocracy that he had discovered during his studies in England, he first built a golf course (Oshima) in 1928 and then, to provide a place for accommodation for an elite clientele, opened a hotel in 1936 which originally had 62 rooms (then 140 rooms in 1954) and the space contained a swimming pool, a tennis court, all surrounded by a garden of 1500 acres and golf courses (Fuji and Oshima). The place nicknamed "the Baron" in reference to Okura, was spared bombings during the Second World War and became a prestigious vacation spot. Okura has chosen an idyllic location offering a unique and splendid landscape: the resort overlooks the Sagami Sea, and you can see Mount Fuji, the Tanzawa mountain range, as well as Mount Daisen, Shonan, the Miura Peninsula, Tokyo Bay, Boso Peninsula, Oshima and seven islands of Izu.

Ils sont accompagnés du couple O'Doul (Frank Lefty et sa femme Jean) et de Bobby Brown.

A leur arrivée, une foule d'une centaine de personnes (dont de nombreuses adolescentes étudiantes) se sont regroupés devant l'hôtel et bloquent l'entrée, dans l'espoir d'approcher Marilyn. Des policiers japonais interviennent pour sécuriser les lieux et ouvrent un passage pour permettre à la voiture de Marilyn et Joe d'atteindre l'entrée.
Bobby Brown est dans une chambre au 3ème étage et Marilyn et Joe occupent d'abord une suite située au 2ème étage mais des néons clignotent sans interruption et Marilyn se sentant toujours malade et souffrant d'insomnies une grande partie de sa vie (elle a notamment a besoin d'une pièce plongée totalement dans le noir), alors le couple est déplacé: Marilyn et Joe occupent la chambre 313.
Upon their arrival, a crowd of around a hundred people (including many teenage students) gathered in front of the hotel and blocked the entrance, hoping to approach Marilyn. Japanese police intervene to secure the place and open a passage to allow Marilyn and Joe's car to reach the entrance.
Bobby Brown is in a room on the 3rd floor and Marilyn and Joe initially occupy a suite located on the 2nd floor but neon lights flash continuously and Marilyn always feels ill and suffers from insomnia for a large part of her life (she notably has need a room completely dark), then the couple is moved: Marilyn and Joe occupy room 313.

C'est dans cet hôtel que Marilyn va recevoir dans sa chambre un journaliste (Masaharu -Shoji- Kawamura, 26 ans, qui représente la presse Yukan Fukunichi), ainsi que trois photographes, pour donner une interview improvisée, en attendant le retour de Joe d'un entraînement de base-ball. Il est prévu que Marilyn et Joe donnent une conférence de presse en fin d'après-midi dans l'hôtel. Joe avait donné une consigne stricte aux reporters avant de partir: personne ne doit approcher sa femme pendant son absence ! Une foule de fans s'est rassemblée au fil de la journée et Marilyn apparaît à une fenêtre du 2ème étage pour saluer les gens en dispersant des pétales d'oeillets et en envoyant des baisers. Les photographes la mitraillent, et elle est photographiée de l'intérieur de l'hôtel, accroupie à quatre-pattes à la fenêtre, se tortillant pour saluer la foule. Quand Joe revient, il voit rouge et fait annuler la conférence de presse.

It is in this hotel that Marilyn will receive in her room a journalist (Masaharu -Shoji- Kawamura, 26 years old, who represents the Yukan Fukunichi press), as well as three photographers, to give an impromptu interview, while waiting for Joe's return from a baseball practice. Marilyn and Joe are scheduled to give a press conference late this afternoon at the hotel. Joe had given strict instructions to the reporters before leaving: no one should approach his wife while he is away! A crowd of fans gathered throughout the day and Marilyn appeared at a 2nd floor window to greet people by scattering carnation petals and blowing kisses. The photographers shoot her, and she is photographed from inside the hotel, crouching on all fours at the window, wriggling to greet the crowd. When Joe goes back, he sees red and cancels the press conference.

Le personnel de l'hôtel sera surpris et enchanté du comportement de Marilyn. Le matin du 10 février, elle lave ses vêtements dans le lavabo. Un employé de l'hôtel dira même dans une interview: "C'est la première fois que je rencontre une cliente qui ne salit pas la chambre. Elle ne manque jamais de vider les cendriers et tous les bouts de papier dans la corbeille. Contrairement aux actrices japonaises, elle n’est pas snob."
Après le départ de Marilyn, des rumeurs ont circulé selon lesquelles le personnel de l'hôtel aurait soigneusement fouillé la salle de bain et le lit de sa chambre à la recherche de cheveux et les aurait revendus au marché noir à un prix élevé.
The hotel staff will be surprised and delighted by Marilyn's behavior. On the morning of February 10, she washed her clothes in the sink. A hotel employee even said in an interview: "This is the first time I came across a guest who does not dirty the room. She never fails to empty the ash trays and all scraps of paper into the wastebasket. Unlike Japanese actresses, she is not a snob."
After Marilyn left, rumors circulated that hotel staff carefully searched for hair in the bathroom and bed of her room and sold it on the black market for a high price.

L'auberge étant à l'écart des villes, Marilyn et Joe ont pu y se reposer au calme.
Ce serait dans cet hôtel que Cappy Harada (qui était le manager qui avait arrangé la tournée des stades de base-ball avec Joe et O'Doul) raconte avoir vu Marilyn le 14 février à 5 heures du matin pleurer dans les bras de Joe. Sans doute le couple s'était disputé la veille.

The Issaen/Ichaen Inn hotel and restaurant was located in Aki-Ku, at 12,42 miles from Hiroshima: Marilyn and Joe spends two nights there (from February 11th to 12th and from February 13th to 14th). They were accompanied by the couple O'Doul (Frank Lefty and his wife Jean) and Bobby Brown.
The inn being away from the towns, Marilyn and Joe were able to relax there in peace.
It would be in this hotel that Cappy Harada (who was the manager who had arranged the baseball stadium tour with Joe and O'Doul) said he saw Marilyn on February 14 at 5 a.m. crying in Joe's arms. No doubt the couple had argued the day before.

C'est une auberge au style traditionnel japonais, de structure typique en bois, entourée d'un magnifique jardin japonais (bassin d'eau, petits ponts, végétation, dalles). L'établissement initial (qui existait apparemment depuis 1930) a été miraculeusement sauvé lors de la tragédie de la bombe atomique larguée à Hiroshima qui a anéanti une grande partie de la ville (d'un point de vue humain et matériel: la plupart des structures en bois qui symbolisaient la beauté de l'architecture japonaise ont été détruites). It is a traditional Japanese style inn, with a typical wooden structure, surrounded by a magnificent Japanese garden (water basin, small bridges, vegetation, flagstones). The original establishment (which apparently existed since 1930) was miraculously saved during the tragedy of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima which wiped out a large part of the city (from a human and material point of view: most of the wooden structures which symbolized the beauty of Japanese architecture were destroyed). The inn opened in 1946 under the name of Mitakisou, which later became Mitakiso (or Mitaki-so). Many Japanese and international personalities have stayed there (in addition to Marilyn and Joe, the former leader of the USSR Mikhail Gorbachev and Emperor Showa). The inn ceased its activity and closed in 2006. In 2009, the establishment re-opens and becomes a reception area for the organization of weddings, and the restaurant part remains accessible to all visitors. In the guest house which has hosted personalities from all over the world, a photograph of Marilyn is framed on the wall.

Il s'agit du plus ancien hôtel du Japon, établi à l'origine par un Hollandais et destiné aux étrangers en 1870, peu après l'ouverture du port de Kobe. La propriété est ensuite transférée à des Anglais en 1907 et l'hôtel va devenir mondialement célèbre pour son service, son hospitalité et en particulier son boeuf de Kobé.
Le bâtiment d'origine est endommagé de manière irréparable lors des raids aériens pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale et est démoli pour être reconstruit dans une structure moderne avec un phare. It is the oldest hotel in Japan, originally established by a Dutchman and aimed at foreigners in 1870, shortly after the opening of the Kobe port. Ownership was then transferred to the English in 1907 and the hotel became world famous for its service, its hospitality and in particular its Kobe beef.
The original building was damaged beyond repair during air raids during World War II and was demolished to be rebuilt into a modern structure with a lighthouse. The 1995 Kobe earthquake again damaged the hotel beyond repair and business was so bad that the hotel closed its doors for a time. Fait amusant pour des visiteurs du Japon: parmi les restaurants fréquentés, ils se rendront dans un restaurant hongrois et iront plusieurs fois dans un restaurant français.

Marilyn and Joe manage to take advantage of their stay to taste several specialties of Japanese culinary dishes. Des sets de petit-déjeuner adaptés des repas de Marilyn sont aujourd'hui proposés au « Plan Dames » de l'Hôtel Impérial: il est ainsi possible de commander ce menu qui comprend de l'agneau poêlé, du pain grillé Melba croustillant et un riche café torréfié.

Irene était l'épouse du célèbre photographe autrichien Francis Haar, qui a travaillé comme photographe au Japon pour le magazine de l'armée américaine Yank et y a ensuite ouvert un studio photo. Irene y a ouvert son restaurant en 1946 et a continué jusqu'en 1956. C'est un restaurant réputé et élégant, fréquenté à l'époque par des militaires, mais aussi des intellectuels et des célébrités et sportifs du monde entier. L'un des cuisiniers, Yoshimasa Saito, s'est souvenu du couple venu manger dans une interview accordée en mai 2006 pour le Japan Times: "Mon-chan, comme nous l'appelions, était plus belle en vrai qu'à l'écran. Marilyn and Joe have dinner one evening at "Irene's Hungaria" restaurant in Ginza, a chic district of Tokyo. Irene was the wife of noted Austrian photographer Frances Haar who served as photographer for Yank Magazine in the U.S. occupation forces in Japan and later opened a photo studio there. Irene opened Irene's Hungaria Restaurant there in 1946 and continued to 1956. It was frequented by celebrities, intellectuals, servicemen and sports people from all over the world. One of the cooks there, Yoshimasa Saito, remembered the couple coming in a May 2006 interview with Judit Kawaguchi for The Japan Times: “Mon-chan, as we called her, was more beautiful in person than on film. I only got a glimpse of her because I was busy cooking.”

During the three days spent in Fukuoka, Marilyn, Joe and Lefty O'Doul dined every evening at the French restaurant Royal Nakasu Honten, located opposite their hotel and Marilyn always ordered the same dish: onion gratin soup, served with cheese bread and a croissant on the side. To have peace of mind, they are placed in a private room of the restaurant. When, one evening, the customers recognized Marilyn, a crowd formed and they had to sneak through the back exit to escape.

- La journaliste Alice Hoffman, présente lors du mariage de Marilyn et Joe, a écrit dans un article pour le magazine Modern Screen en avril 1954, que Marilyn aurait acheté le tailleur "à la dernière minute" avant son mariage chez Joseph Magnin ou chez Macy, à Union Square. Cela ne peut cependant être vrai puisque Marilyn avait porté le tailleur plusieurs mois avant (pour la rencontre avec le Roi de Grèce à la Fox en novembre 1953).
Pour son article, Hoffman s'était entretenue avec Marie DiMaggio, une des soeurs de Joe, qui raconta: "Nous sommes allés acheter son tailleur de mariage à San Francisco. Elle a acheté deux tenues, dont une chez Joseph Magnin. Je pense qu'elle a payé 149,50 $ pour cela. Cela ne me regardait pas. Je veux dire le prix. Mais c'était un joli tailleur."

Alors Marilyn donne son tailleur à Amy, qui l'offre à son tour à sa propre mère Nina, qui va le porter à diverses occasions (en se rendant à l'Eglise ou à d'autres sorties), sans même jamais savoir que ce tailleur avait appartenu à Marilyn.

Elle le vend aux enchères: le 30 septembre 1999, aux enchères "Cocktails" de Sotheby's, il est vendu environ 30 000 $ (29 000 $ ou 33 350 $ selon les sources), acheté par un homme d'affaires américain qui a souhaité resté anonyme. On découvre alors que le tailleur - vendu avec son col de fourrure blanche- a subi quelques modifications: la veste et la jupe ont été raccourcis et il y a moins de boutons. En fait, c'est la mère d'Amy, Nina, qui avait transformé le tailleur car elle ne faisait pas la même taille (d'où les longueurs raccourcies et le nombre de boutons en moins).

Probably after the death of her mother, Amy Greene gets the suit back. She sells it at auction: on September 30, 1999, at the Sotheby's "Cocktails" auction, it sold for around $30,000 ($29,000 or $33,350 depending on sources), purchased by an American businessman who wished to remain anonymous. We then discover that the suit - sold with its white fur collar - has undergone some modifications: the jacket and the skirt have been shortened and there are fewer buttons. In fact, it was Amy's mother, Nina, who had transformed the suit because she wasn't the same size (hence the shortened lengths and fewer buttons).

Le tailleur va ensuite apparaître au cinéma: dans le film "Wonder Boys" de Curtis Hanson en 2000. C'est en fait la veste avec son col en fourrure blanche, qui figure dans plusieurs scènes du film: d'abord, elle est conservée dans un placard puis, subtilisée par l'un des personnages qui l'offre à sa petite amie, elle est portée par l'actrice Jane Adams. On ne sait s'il s'agit de la vraie veste ou d'une copie.

The suit will then appear in the cinema: in the film "Wonder Boys" by Curtis Hanson in 2000. La description indique: épaule à poignet 20", épaule à taille 19"; Jupe : la taille mesure 27" (qui correspond à une taille 36), de la taille à l'ourlet 25".
Les étiquettes intérieures comportent la mention "Consumer Protection Label WSA" et la description de la vente indiquait qu'Amy avait confirmé que Marilyn lui avait confié l'avoir acheté dans une boutique I Magnin de Los Angeles.

The suit is put back on sale on December 9, 2022 at the Gotta Have Rock and Roll auction (with a sale amount expected between $1.5 and $2 million - no information is available on the final auction amount).
Description states: shoulder to cuff 20”, shoulder to waist 19”; Skirt: waist measures 27”, waist to hem 25”.
The interior labels read "Consumer Protection Label WSA" and the sale description indicated that Amy confirmed that Marilyn told her she bought it at an I Magnin store in Los Angeles.
