Seven days bring a rush of good plays and an enchanting new actress
In the joyful and excited face of 17-year-old Actress Susan Strasberg are mirrored some of the joy and excitement of Broadway's new season. Usually the season opens with a trickle of plays. But this fall it began with a flash flood. In the short span of seven days five plays made their bow, four of them to critical applause, and Broadway was off to its best start in 10 years. Surprisingly, all of the new plays were written on serious themes. There seemed little or no time for comedy.
Each of the offerings had its own claim to distinction. The first, by one of America's most important dramatists, was Arthur Miller's 'A View from the Bridge'. From France came 'Tiger at the Gates' by Jean Giraudoux, translated by England's illustrious Christopher Fry. Four little-known short stories by F. Scott Fitzgerald were converted by Sally Benson into a character study called 'The Young and Beautiful'. A leading Italian playwright, Ugo Betti, was represented - unsuccessfully - by 'Island of Goats.' The latest of the arrivals, a dramatization of the remarkable real-life diary of Anne Frank, is the most moving play to emerge from World War II.

A GALLANT GIRL'S GRIM YEARS
By a strange turn of fate, the words of an obscure little Jewish girl who died of typhus and malnutrition in a Nazi concentration camp have given Broadway one of its finest plays, The Diary of Anne Frank. Anne's real diary, published in the U.S. in 1952 and dramatized now by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, tells how the Frank family and four other fugitives hid in an Amsterdam garret for two years before the Nazis caught them. Despite its harrowing story, the play, under Garson Kanin's direction, glows with tender humor and the pervading spirit of the little girl's unaffected nobility.
   The part of Anne Frank, who was 13 when she went into her exile under the eaves, is acted by Susan Strasberg (LIFE, July 11). A newcomer to Broadway, Susan brought a breezy enchantment to her role that won the praise of every New York critic. And even after the opening-night bravos subsided in the theatre, Susan was due for still more applause (below).

A Famous Pair - and a Finale
.
Clark Gable (see cover) came to The Misfits full of beans. In it he plays a character he loved - Gay Langland, a free-roaming, woman-loving wild horse hunter at war against a society that would take him. He takes up with Marilyn Monroe's Roslyn, the most loving and manwanted woman in town. And the conflict between a vigorous Gable and gentle Marilyn isnthe essence of Arthur Miller's screen play written especially for his wife Marilyn and soon to be released by United Artists.
This was a movie that should have gone along easily - so well fitted were the players to the misfits they played. As the fancy-free divorcée who takes up with footloose mustang wrangler, Marilyn plays a role into which are written bits and pieces reminiscent of her own life. The wrangler is all uncomplicated masculinity, virile, violent and, in spirit, the perfect part for Clark Gable. To help the two here was a top director, John Huston, and fine supporting actors, Thelma Ritter, Montgomery Clift and Eli Wallach.
But as always there were troubles: forest fires and dust storms delayed the shooting and Marilyn collapsed with heat fatigue. This time the troubles went far beyond ordinary bad luck. At film's end came the unhappy announcement of Arthur and Marilyn's divorce, and then the final tragic news of Clark's death.
But the movie had been completed. Gable especially was enthusiastic about it. If he judged aright - and he was ever slow to praise his own movies - his last film will be one of his best.

Il y interprète un personnage qu'il affectionne particulièrement : Gay Langland, un chasseur de chevaux sauvages, solitaire et épris de femmes, en lutte contre une société qui cherche à le racheter. Il se lie d'amitié avec Roslyn (Marilyn Monroe), la femme la plus convoitée et la plus aimante de la ville. Le conflit entre un Gable vigoureux et une Marilyn douce est au cœur du scénario d'Arthur Miller, écrit spécialement pour son épouse Marilyn et bientôt distribué par United Artists.
Ce film aurait dû se dérouler sans accroc, tant les acteurs incarnaient parfaitement leurs personnages marginaux. Dans le rôle de la divorcée insouciante qui s'éprend d'un cow-boy solitaire, Marilyn campe un personnage dont le scénario intègre des éléments de sa propre vie. Le cow-boy, viril et violent, incarne la masculinité simple et directe, un rôle taillé sur mesure pour Clark Gable. Pour épauler le duo, ils pouvaient compter sur un réalisateur de renom, John Huston, et d'excellents seconds rôles : Thelma Ritter, Montgomery Clift et Eli Wallach.
Mais comme toujours, des difficultés surgirent : des feux de forêt et des tempêtes de poussière retardèrent le tournage, et Marilyn fut victime d'un coup de chaleur. Cette fois, les problèmes allaient bien au-delà de la simple malchance. À la fin du film, l'annonce malheureuse du divorce d'Arthur et Marilyn, puis la tragique nouvelle de la mort de Clark, tombèrent.
Le film était néanmoins terminé. Gable, en particulier, était enthousiaste. S'il ne se trompait pas – et il était toujours avare de compliments envers ses propres films –, son dernier film serait l'un de ses meilleurs.
