Neatly and floridly inscribed by Marilyn to her agent in white ink against the black background, “To Ferdinand, Many thanks for your encouragement and friendship. Sincerely, Marilyn Monroe”. Also signed by Willinger in black ink in lower right margin. Accompanied by 1974 sales receipt from Hollywood Book Service on Hollywood Blvd. Easily the most spectacular signed Marilyn Monroe photograph we have ever encountered. (TCF, 1954) Vintage 2.25 x 2.25 transparencies (9) loose in original cardboard mounts of Marilyn Monroe on location in Banff, Canada for River of No Return. All are candids either alone or with cast and crew members, and (5) depict Monroe in camisole lingerie worn in numerous scenes throughout the film. Also depicted is her ankle injury incurred during filming. All have shifted toward pink due to ephemeral nature of the film stock, though this is easily corrected for printing. Aside from color shift, all appear fine and remarkably well-preserved.

Niagara Falls’ two weeks with Marilyn

Some 60 years before Nik Wallenda walked a tightrope and focused attention from across the world on Niagara Falls; nearly two decades before the Christopher Reeve’s Superman made his famous flight over the mighty cataract to save a young boy’s life in 1979, Marilyn Monroe brought the bright lights of Hollywood north of the border to Niagara Falls.

The soon-to-be screen goddess was in Niagara Falls for the filming of Niagara, a film noir classic with co-star Joseph Cotten. In total, the star was in the city for about two weeks, from June 5 to 18, 1952.

“She stayed at the General Brock Hotel — now the Crowne Plaza. She stayed in Room 801,” says Sherman Zavitz, historian for the City of Niagara Falls. And when she wasn’t working on the film, Monroe took pleasure with the same activities as most tourists did during the time period, he says.

“When she had some free time she took a ride on the Maid of the Mist. She shopped. She toured the Oneida silverware plant,” Zavitz says. That plant is long gone — the property is now occupied by Casino Niagara — but Pauline Tanos remembers Marilyn’s visit well. Her husband, Alex, who has since passed away, was a foreman in the hammer room at the Falls Avenue facility.
“He saw her. He thought she was very beautiful,” Pauline says. “He whistled at her. She just kind of smiled.”

Monroe had become a well-known name by the time filming on Niagara began and thus became as big an attraction as the falls itself while she was here.
“She was certainly noticed by people around the falls,” Zavitz says. “She was a well-known name at that point. She was a great looking girl — very photogenic.”

Monroe had appeared in several films before Niagara including All About Eve and Monkey Business, but her role as Rose Loomis in Niagara is considered to be the one that put her career on the fast track. In the same year (1953) Niagara hit the theatres, Monroe also starred in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes as well as How to Marry a Millionaire.

Photographer George Bailey was just eight years old at the time of Monroe’s visit to Niagara but he remembers his father, Manny, talking about his many encounters with her. “My dad, who was second mate of the Maid of the Mist, had the chance to be near her many times,” Bailey says. “His impression was that she was most definitely a beautiful lady but very shy or perhaps insecure.”
Manny Bailey even made it into the final cut of the movie, Bailey says.
“Don’t blink. He’s in a scene on the plankway of the Maid of the Mist. Now, how many people can say they know someone who appeared in a movie with Marilyn Monroe ?”

Ron Dewberry and his sister, Sandra Jeanneret, were just little — Ron was five and Sandra was two — but they remember their father, Hank, telling them stories around the dinner table.
“He served them (Monroe and Cotten) dinner,” Ron says. “He came home and raved about it. We didn’t know what the heck was going on.”
“Dad was a server at the Rapids Tavern on River Road,” Sandra adds.

The movie centres around married couple George (Cotten) and Rose Loomis (Monroe), who are vacationing in Niagara Falls. George, a Second World War veteran is experiencing mental health issues that he thinks are due to his war experiences. Rose, meanwhile has taken on a lover and plots to have George murdered. Polly Cutler, in Niagara Falls with her husband, Ray, on their honeymoon, is in the neighbouring cabin to the Loomises and becomes the unfortunate bystander who gets caught up in the intrigue between the unhappy couple.

The Rainbow Cabins were built specifically for the movie and were taken down at the end of shooting. But buildings used in the movie can still be seen around the city, including City Hall, although the building was remodelled two years later in 1954. The former morgue located at Zimmerman Avenue and Park Street, used for the police station in the movie, still stands. The boat launch were Joseph Cotten’s character steals a boat is located along Bridgewater Street in Chippawa. The building which is now the Riverside Tavern can be seen in the background. But most notably, the carillon tower near the Rainbow Bridge still stands, although the chimes are now pre-recorded. The structure plays a pivotal role in the film including its climax.

Some Like It Hot! Stunning rare photos of Marilyn Monroe relaxing on movie sets can be seen in new travelling exhibition

More than 50 years after her death, fans of Marilyn Monroe can see rare and some never-before-seen photos of the actress in a new exhibition.
Taken between 1952 and 1956, the images give an intimate look at the star, capturing her vivacious nature and beautiful smile.
The photos can be viewed as part Limited Runs' collection and travelling exhibition, which launches in Los Angeles in June and will then go on to San Francisco and New York City.

True beauty:

One of the more recognisable images shows Marilyn just before 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes', lounging around in a cream bikini and displaying her famously voluptuous and gorgeous figure.
A photo from the following year, 1953, has not been seen before and shows the iconic actress cuddling up to a horse.
In the snapshot Marilyn is wearing a low-cut frilly top and jeans, while on the set of 'The River of No Return'.

In her natural state:
One photo from the same movie set shows Marilyn
make-up free and dressed casually, which was rarely seen.

Another photo from the same film set shows the star in a very rare casual state with no make-up and her platinum locks unstyled, although she wears sunglasses over her bare face.
Marilyn is pictured alongside two black bears while dressed down in a grey jumper and baggy black trousers, but of course still looks stunning.
The 'Some Like It Hot' star relaxes against some rocks in front of a lake while wearing a grey pencil skirt, red top and matching lipstick in one of the shots, taken on set of 'Niagara' in upstate New York.

The more recent of the collection of images were taken on the snowy set of Bus Stop.

The star, whose real name was Norma Jeane Mortenson, was 36 when she died of a barbiturate overdose in 1962.

lot 981: MARILYN MONROE INSCRIBED PHOTOGRAPH
A photograph of Marilyn Monroe mounted to board and inscribed on the board “Oh George,/ You’re a genius!/ Marilyn Monroe.” The black and white image was taken by Cecil Beaton and said to be Monroe’s favorite image of herself.
The consignor relates that in the late 1950s he attended an event at Frank Sinatra’s Palm Springs home as a guest of Sammy Davis Jr. The consignor remembers the photograph being given by Monroe, who was also a guest of Sinatra’s, to Davis’ valet, whom he named as “George.” This is a possible inaccuracy and may have been given to Frank Sinatra’s longtime valet, George Jacobs. The consignor was given the image by the valet George, who said he could not take the item back to Los Angeles. The consignor has had the photograph in his possession since that time.

He wrote to offer his condolences regarding Monroe’s miscarriage. Lot 1071: MARILYN MONROE RECEIVED AND SENT CORRESPONDENCE
A group of correspondence sent and received by Marilyn Monroe, including a two-page typed, signed letter to Monroe from Jean Negulesco, typed on Negulesco’s stationery and dated July 14, 1958. The letter is in regard to flowers and a book sent by the director to Monroe. The book was The Midwife of Pont Clary , which Negulesco wanted to adapt into a film for Monroe. He wrote, “The thing of The Midwife of Pont Clary is fundamentally sex …” and later suggests Monroe give the book to her husband, Arthur Miller, to read. Also included are a copy of a wire message sent by Monroe to Inez Melson dated June 10, 1959, regarding the boarding of a bird named Clyde; a typed, signed letter from playwright William Inge complimenting Monroe on her performance in Some Like It Hot (UA, 1959), dated April 6, 1959, and signed “Bill Inge"; and a confirmation copy of a telegram sent by Monroe to Roberto Boss in Mexico regarding a furniture order, with a typed, dictated copy of same, dated June 16, 1962, less than two months before Monroe’s death.

A lavender Travilla tribute dress honoring Marilyn Monroe and Andy Warhol. The sheer crepe sunburst pleated halter dress was inspired by the white dress Monroe made famous in The Seven Year Itch (20th Century, 1955) and attributed by the Travilla estate as being re-created for an Andy Warhol memorial service at The Beverly Hilton in the colors of his iconic "Marilyn" silkscreen images. A pair of clip-on rhinestone earrings owned by Marilyn Monroe. Each earring is composed of a single full-cut prong-set rhinestone and five strands of cascading prong-set baguette cut rhinestones with simple clip backs. Monroe wore these earrings to the premiere of The Rose Tattoo (Paramount Pictures, 1955) and Actor's Studio benefit dinner which she attended with Marlon Brando. Also believed to have been worn to the opening of The Middle of the Night on Broadway in 1956. The play was produced by Joshua Logan who also directed Monroe in Bus Stop (20th Century, 1956). An album of photographs taken by Daryl Mitchell, who served in the Korean War from August 1952 to August 1954 as "Senior Still Photographer" of the 101st Signal Battalion. Mitchell photographed visiting dignitaries, government visitors including Senator Richard Nixon, generals, and entertainers, namely Marilyn Monroe. Included in the album are approximately 93 vintage black and white photographs Mitchell took in Korea, including approximately nine of Nixon and eight of Monroe during her visit to Korea. The images of Monroe show her entertaining, signing autographs, getting out of a Jeep, getting food in line, and two of Monroe with the troops, wearing a flight jacket. Also accompanied by 10 color transparency slides of Monroe on stage entertaining the troops. Seven photographs of Monroe are 14 by 11 inches; one is 10 by 8 inches. Lot 1264: EARL MORAN (AMERICAN, 1893-1984) MARILYN MONROE NUDE
 An oil on canvas painting of Marilyn Monroe reclining nude in bed. Signed middle right “Earl Moran.”
Earl Moran was a prominent pin-up artist during the 1930s and 40s with a stylish flair that helped sell millions of calendars for publishers Brown & Bigelow. In 1946 Moran had the good fortune of meeting an aspiring model named Norma Jean Dougherty, soon to become famous as Marilyn Monroe. Dozens of photographs were taken of Monroe in various poses which Moran then used to paint seductive nudes in oil and pastel, portraying Marilyn as a blonde, redhead and even as a brunette. The painting shown here was purchased by the consignor's wife directly from Moran after they met him at the Laguna Art Festival. The consignor fondly recalls how Moran explained to them that the model for the painting was a young woman named Norma Jean Dougherty.

Cet ensemble tailleur jupe veste a été conçu par la célèbre costumière de cinéma, Dorothy Jeakins pour le film Niagara tourné l'été 1952 à la frontière canadienne. Dorothy Jeakins s'occupa de tous les costumes du film. Marilyn Monroe fit les essais de test costumes le 21 mai 1952 (voir photo ci-contre).
C'est une tenue moderne et classique à la fois, très près du corps, à la veste cintrée et dont la jupe, longue, dessine parfaitement les courbes de Marilyn. Elle porte la tenue avec des sandales ouvertes blanches.
Il semblerait qu'elle ne porte pas de chemisier sous la veste, mais peut-être est-elle en soutien-gorge ou a-t-elle un fin corsage ?!

Dans Niagara, Marilyn porte ce tailleur dans une courte scène où son personnage Rose Loomis, femme fatale énigmatique, sort de son bungalow et salue ses voisins, les époux Cutler. On ne la voit donc avec cette tenue que brièvement, marchant d'un pas alerte et déterminé.
Il existe une série de photographies de Marilyn prises sur le tournage portant ce tailleur, où on la découvre consciensieuse et concentrée auprès de Jean Peters, révisant ses scènes. Puis, elle va aussi poser pour des portraits publicitaires du film, assise sur un muret devant les fameuses chutes du Niagara.

Marilyn va ensuite emprunter la robe, pour la porter le 26 juin 1952 à la cour de justice de Los Angeles, dans un procès qui l'opposait à Kaupman et Kaplen, qui avait utilisé son nom pour vendre des photos de nus.

Le tailleur avait ensuite été récupéré (racheté sans doute à un petit prix) par l'actrice Debbie Reynolds, qui organisa, le 3 décembre 2011, une vente aux enchères où elle revendait une grande partie de sa collection d'objets et de costumes de cinéma.
Le tailleur, mis à prix à 80 000 Dollars, fut vendu pour la somme de 210 000 Dollars.

Magenta Dress

Cette longue robe a été conçue par la célèbre costumière de cinéma, Dorothy Jeakins pour le film Niagara tourné l'été 1952 à la frontière canadienne. Dorothy Jeakins s'occupa de tous les costumes du film. Marilyn Monroe fit les essais de test costumes avec cette robe le 21 mai 1952 (voir photo ci-contre). 
La robe est diablement sexy: d'abord, elle semble totalement moulée dans le corps de Marilyn; puis, le décolleté plongeant est croisé par un noeud qui suggère alors la poitrine, ainsi qu'une petite fermeture éclair qui est disposée sur le ventre, si bien que Marilyn peut être déshabillée en deux gestes rapides (défaire le noeud, et ouvrir la fermeture éclair). C'est donc une tenue provocante et sensuelle, qui suggère au plus au point la sexualité féminine. 
Quand à la couleur, il existe une certaine controverse: certains pensent que la robe est rouge, tel qu'on peut le découvrir sur certaines photographies et dans la version cinématographique du film (avec ses versions diffusées à la TV jusque dans les années 1990s) et avec ainsi toutes les suggestions symboliques liées à cette couleur: l'amour, la passion, l'érotisme, et le sang, autant d'ingrédients que l'on retrouve dans le film. Mais d'autres pensent que la robe est rose fuchsia (appelée aussi magenta) tel qu'on le découvre là encore, sur d'autres photographies mais aussi dans la version restaurée du film disponible en DVD, et dont les significations symboliques liées à cette couleur renvoient à la féminité, au romantisme, à la séduction, au bonheur, à la tendresse et la jeunesse. Enfin, d'autres pensent encore qu'il serait possible que la robe ait été créée en deux modèles identiques mais de couleurs différentes (une rouge et une rose).

Dans Niagara, Marilyn porte cette robe dans la scène la plus célebre du film: celle où elle chante d'une voix suave et sensuelle la chanson Kiss, devenue depuis un titre incontournable du répertoire musical de la star. Sur le tournage du film, Marilyn apparaît plutôt décontractée dans cette tenue pourtant très suggestive. Elle va aussi bien évidemment poser pour une série de portraits publicitaires du film: une séance devant un muret au faux décor des Chutes sous l'objectif du photographe Bruno Bernard, une séance seule en studio, et une autre séance avec Joseph Cotten, l'acteur qui interprète son mari dans le film. 
Dans le film, Marilyn porte la tenue accompagnée d'un foulard de mousseline blanc, des boucles d'oreilles créôles et des chaussures sandales à talons aux lanières noires et brillantes.

Marilyn va emprunter la robe aux studios de la Fox, pour la porter à différents événements publics au cours de l'année 1952:

• D'abord, le 17 mars 1952 , Marilyn porte la robe pour assister au match de Base-Ball des Hollywood Stars contre les All-Stars, où jouait son futur mari Joe DiMaggio, au Gilmore stadium de Los Angeles, à but caritatif. Pour cette soirée, elle coordonne la robe avec les mêmes accessoires que ceux arborés dans le film: le foulard de mousseline blanc, les boucles d'oreilles et les sandales à lanières noires. 

• Elle va ensuite la porter à l'un des événements les plus connus auxquels elle a participé: le 3 août 1952, Marilyn est l'invitée d'honneur de la fête Ray Anthony Party, organisée par la Fox, dans une villa de Sherman Oaks, dans le district de Los Angeles, situé dans la vallée de San Fernando. Marilyn fait une arrivée spectaculaire en hélicoptère, pose avec le chien de la série Lassie, et écoute la chanson "My Marilyn" composée spécialement pour elle par Ray Anthony et son orchestre. Mitraillée par les nombreux photographes présents, elle apparaît plus sexy que jamais:
  

• Puis, à la fin du mois d'août 1952 , la robe faisait partie de ses bagages, lors de sa tournée promotionnelle du film Monkey Business (Chérie, je me sens rajeunir) sur la côte est des Etats-Unis. Pendant son escale new-yorkaise, elle se fait photographier par Ben Ross dans le Sherry Netherland Hotel vêtue de la robe. 

• Elle la porte à nouveau le 14 septembre 1952, pour participer à la fête nationale et patritique "I am an American", organisée dans l'ampithéâtre plein air d'Hollywood Bowl, sur les hauteurs d'Hollywood. 

• Enfin, elle apparaît encore dans la robe le 26 octobre 1952, pour le show radiophonique d'Edgar Bergen, un ventriloque, qui animait une émission avec deux marionnettes: Charlie McCarthy et Mortimer Snerd. Marilyn s'est prêtée au jeu, prenant des poses de séductrice avec les pantins.
  

Après la sortie du film Niagara, la robe de Marilyn va devenir tellement populaire, que des versions plus soft ont vu le jour. Encore aujourd'hui, cette robe fait partie intégrante de l'image de Marilyn (avec la robe dorée des Hommes Préfèrent les Blondes,  la robe blanche de Sept ans de réflexion ou encore la robe moulante portée pour l'anniversaire de JFK), que des pseudo-sosies de Marilyn prennent la pose portant des copies de la robe:

Qu'est donc devenue cette célèbre robe ?... Depuis qu'elle fut portée par Marilyn, elle n'est jamais réapparue, ni sur le corps d'une autre actrice, ni dans les enchères ou expositions consacrées à Marilyn.
