Marilyn Monroe was photographed wearing various hats by Carl Perutz. These photos date from the spring of 1958 (before April) and were discovered by chance in a New York warehouse in 1979. Perutz is believed to have taken around sixty photos of Marilyn.

 Ces photos sont restées longtemps inédites jusqu'à cette découverte pour laquelle le magazine américain Playboy fait appel à ses lecteurs dans leur magazine de janvier 1980 pour toute information relative à ces portraits.

L'illustrateur Jon Whitcomb entre en contact avec le magazine et leur explique qu'en 1958, le magazine American Weekly souhaitait des illustrations de femmes célèbres portant des chapeaux: le peintre en fait une illustration (à partir de la photo de Marilyn avec le grand chapeau blanc) qui sera publiée dans le supplément dominical de American Weekly du 06 avril 1958 (-sur le blog: article art - Marilyn par Jon Whitcomb ); « Le chapeau de Pâques de Lady Marilyn », avec six modistes de renom qui ont créé un chapeau pour six femmes célèbres : Marilyn Monroe, Kathy Grant Crosby, Lucille Ball, Elsa Maxwell, Eleanor Roosevelt et Mamie Eisenhower, l'épouse du président.

Illustrator Jon Whitcomb contacted the magazine and explained that in 1958, American Weekly wanted illustrations of famous women wearing hats. He created an illustration (based on a photo of Marilyn wearing a large white hat) which was published in the Sunday supplement of American Weekly on April 6, 1958 (see blog post: art article - Marilyn by Jon Whitcomb ); titled  “Milady’s Easter Bonnet,” it featured six leading milliners who provided hats for six well-known women: Marilyn Monroe, Kathy Grant Crosby, Lucille Ball, Elsa Maxwell, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Mamie Eisenhower, the president's wife.

Les illustrations de Whitcomb s'appuient sur les photographies de Carl Perutz.
Les illustrations ayant été publiées dans le numéro du 06 avril 1958, la séance photos a donc été prise bien avant. Par ailleurs, il semblerait que Carl Perutz aurait été engagé par la Hearst Corporation, qui détient le magazine American Weekly, pour réaliser la séance photo avec Marilyn Monroe portant des chapeaux du salon de Northridge.
Cependant, une autre information circule sur la provenance de la commande de cette série de portrait à Perutz: apparemment, certains clichés comporteraient le tampon de crédit du magazine Life; d'où le fait qu'on peut lire que la commande avait été effectuée par Life. Cette information n'a jamais été démentie par LIFE mais il semble peu crédible que ce soit une demande de leur part, puisque Whitcomb avait été mandaté pour illustrer la photographie de Marilyn portant le chapeau blanc pour American Weekly.

Whitcomb's illustrations are based on photographs by Carl Perutz.
Since the illustrations were published in the April 6, 1958 issue, the photo shoot must have taken place well before then. Furthermore, it appears that Carl Perutz was hired by the Hearst Corporation, which owns American Weekly magazine, to do the photo shoot with Marilyn Monroe wearing hats from the Northridge's salon.
However, another piece of information circulates regarding the origin of the commission for this series of portraits from Perutz: apparently, some of the photos bear the Life magazine credit stamp; hence the claim that the commission came from Life. This information has never been denied by LIFE, but it seems unlikely that it was their request, since Whitcomb had been commissioned to illustrate the photograph of Marilyn wearing the white hat for American Weekly.

Marilyn possédait des tirages privés: il existe une facture de commandes de plusieurs photographies à Perutz datant du 18 juin 1958, ce qui atteste qu'elle aimait le résultat. Dans l'appartement que Marilyn occupait à Manhattan avec Arthur Miller, une photographie (le portrait avec le grand chapeau blanc) se trouvait sur une étagère dans le bureau d'Arthur.

Marilyn owned private prints: there is an invoice for several photographs ordered from Perutz, dated June 18, 1958, which attests that she liked the result. In the Manhattan apartment Marilyn shared with Arthur Miller, a photograph (the portrait with the large white hat) sat on a shelf in Arthur's office.

Séance "Rouge"
Red Sitting

Le 27 janvier 1957, c'est dans son studio au 480 Lexington Avenue, à New York que Milton H Greene réalise ce qui restera sa dernière séance avec Marilyn Monroe. Commande pour le magazine" Life", les clichés serviront de support publicitaire pour le film "Le Prince et la Danseuse". Marilyn y apparaît tour à tour mutine et sensuelle, et bien qu'il s'agisse de leur dernière collaboration, il en ressort néanmoins la complicité qui a toujours lié le photographe et la star.

On January 27, 1957, it is in his studio at 480 Lexington Avenue in New York that Milton H Greene performs what would be his last sitting with Marilyn Monroe. Realized for the magazine "Life", the pictures will serve as advertising medium for the film "The Prince and the Showgirl". Marilyn appears in turn mutineer and sensual, and although this is their last collaboration, it nevertheless shows the complicity that has always linked the photographer and the star.
