A diploma from Ralph Waldo Emerson Junior High School in Los Angeles, for the ninth grade graduation of Norma Jeane Baker in 1941. Norma Jeane was 15 at the time and facing an uncertain future as the health of her guardian at that time, Ana Lower, was about to cause another change of household for Monroe.

A double-sided two-page letter written to Marilyn Monroe from "Uncle Art," who was a relative of Monroe's foster mother, Grace Goddard. The letter reads in part "So glad you are making satisfactory progress in school. I advise that you be particularly diligent in the cultural subjects...sad is the fate of the young woman who has not the ambition to so model and mold her language and conduct as to have [illegible] herself to the point where she can mingle with cultured people inconspicuously." The letter is written on International Correspondence Schools of Scranton, Pennsylvania, stationery, undated and signed "Devotedly Yours, Uncle Art."

lot n°427: MARILYN MONROE RECEIVED LETTER FROM SIDNEY SKOLSKY
A double-sided two-page letter from columnist Sidney Skolsky to Marilyn Monroe dated April 2, 1952. The letter is written on Albert Pike Hotel, Little Rock, Arkansas, stationery. In the letter Skolsky says he is writing because of a conversation the two just had and he cannot sleep. He writes words of encouragement to Monroe. In part, "What else can I say sweet Sunshine? How can I tell you how sure I am of you, for you?" He references an article written by LIFE magazine columnist Stan Flink: "...that putrid Stan Flink article...Can you undo it by torturing yourself?" On April 7, 1952, Monroe appeared on her first LIFE magazine cover. The affectionate letter is signed "Love ----Sid."

In the letter to William Morris Agency Inc., Monroe requests a $200 deduction in her monthly salary from 20th Century Fox so that she may cover a dental bill of $1,800 for her acting coach, Natasha Lytess. Matted together with a black and white photograph of Monroe.

A two-page typed letter on personalized stationery, dated "July 14, 1958," addressed to Marilyn Monroe at the Bel Air Hotel from director Jean Negulesco. The letter is regarding a book titled The Midwife of Pont Clary which Negulesco sent to Monroe and writes about wanting to adapt into a film role for her. The letter reads in part "The thing of 'The Midwife of Pont Clary' is fundamentally sex...I have quite an exciting idea for the treatment of the story...I would like to sit down and talk to you about it...Please give this book to Arthur [Miller] to read...;" signed in black ink "Jean." This movie was never made. Negulesco directed Monroe in Full House (20th Century Fox, 1952), How to Marry a Millionaire (20th Century Fox, 1953), and River of No Return (20th Century Fox, 1954).

 lot n°469: MARILYN MONROE RELATED LETTER
A two-page typed letter dated September 27, 1958, on Chateau Marmont hotel stationery, to Miss May Reis, Marilyn Monroe's secretary, and believed to be from Paula Strasberg. The letter reads in part "This week was a most difficult one for Marilyn. But I saw the rushes and they were extraordinary. I have kept minute notes on this weeks' work that will cover pages and pages through the type-writer. I will send a copy on to Arthur because I think it will more than interest him professionally insofar as what happens to the actor in the process of work" and "Tonight, Eli, Marilyn, Clifford...are going out for a quiet dinner. Tomorrow we leave for Coronado and will be there, I should think, until next Thursday." This letter was written during the time Monroe was filming the comedy Some Like It Hot (United Artists, 1959) and relates to some of Monroe's expenses incurred during that time. Signed "Paula" in blue ink.

A typed letter from Marilyn Monroe, dated "May 7, 1957" and written to Warner Bros. Pictures, permitting them to use her name in the dialogue of their film Green Eyes ; signed by Monroe in blue fountain pen ink. Attached is a typed page of dialogue from the film where Monroe's name was used, in part, "JOYCE: / (before mirror)/ How's my hair?/ BETSY:/ (genuine admiration)/ It's beautiful, Joyce!/ JOYCE:/ (preening herself)/ It's kind of the way Marilyn Monroe does hers." The letter is framed with an image of Monroe and two other documents; a carbon copy of a letter sent to Warner Bros. Pictures from Monroe's secretary regarding this matter; and the original request letter sent to "Mrs. Lilian Dean" at Marilyn Monroe Productions Inc.

4/11/1953 Première How to marry a millionaire

1953_11_04_htmam_premiere_001Le 4 novembre 1953, a lieu la première du film How to marry a millionaire (Comment épouser un milionnaire?) au Fox-Wilshire Theater à Hollywood. Le film est tourné en cinémascope couleur et l'événement est fortement médiatisé par la présence de nombreux journalistes, reporters et photographes; ainsi qu'une foule de badaux qui sont sur place. De nombreuses personnalités assistent à la première: Debbie Reynolds, Mitzi Gaynor, Rock Hudson, Shelley Winters. Les participants au film arrivent en voiture seul ou par deux: le réalisateur Jean Negulesco est accompagné de sa femme; Lauren Bacall est aux bras d'Humphrey Boggart; puis le scénariste Nunnally Johnson avec Marilyn Monroe. Ils posent avec plaisir pour les photographes et Marilyn se montre plus que jamais disponible autant envers les journalistes, répondant aux micros des reporters, mais aussi des photographes en posant longuement, que du public composé d'anonymes, en signant des autographes. Très en beauté, Marilyn porte la même robe en dentelle blanche que lors de son show tv en septembre au Jack Benny Show.
Nunnally Johnson se souvient d'une soirée plutôt désopilante: "Dès son arrivée chez nous (chez Johnson et sa femme), Marilyn demande un bourbon-soda. Puis, alors que pourtant nous devions dîner tôt et légèrement, elle en demande un autre. Elle était à la fois surexcitée et très angoissée à la perspective de cette soirée. Je ne la savais pas à ce point naïve et spontanée; et je fus stupéfait de voir l'importance qu'elle accordait à cette première: pour elle, c'en était presque insupportable. Nous nous préparons à monter dans la voiture -une limousine louée, avec chauffeur- et elle demande un troisième verre, sans soda cette fois. Gentlemen jusqu'au bout, Boggart et moi bûmes avec elle pendant le trajet. Il n'y avait pas trio plus aimable que nous dans tout l'Etat de Californie quand nous fîmes notre entrée dans le théâtre (...). Pour tout dire, elle était complètement paf. Au moment même où le film commençait, il a fallu qu'elle aille aux toilettes. Ma femme l'a accompagnée car il était clair que Marilyn avait besoin d'aide. Ronde comme elle était dans une robe ultra étroite, qu'elle s'était faite coudre sur elle. Ce n'a pas été rien, je vous assure (ma femme m'a raconté la scène après), de lui faire faire pipi, puis de la remettre dans un état convenable pour qu'elle retourne à sa place. Quand on se fait coudre dans sa robe, on ne devrait jamais trop boire."

Après la première au théâtre, une grande soirée est organisée chez le réalisateur Jean Negulesco, où participent entre autres, Mitzi Gaynor et Robert Mitchum. Marilyn confiera alors que "c'est la plus belle soirée de ma vie. C'est comme lorsque j'étais petite et que je rêvais qu'il m'arrivait des choses merveilleuses. Maintenant, elles sont arrivées."

  • Son rôle
    C'est le 18ème film de Marilyn Monroe, positionnée 7ème au générique, dans un tout petit rôle d'une apparition faisant moins de deux minutes à l'écran, en péripatéticienne d'un certain rang. Cependant, à la sortie du film, on présenta le nom de Marilyn Monroe en haut de l'affiche, car Marilyn était devenue une star célèbre.

  • La scène de Marilyn dans le film
    Une scène très brève, où elle se trouve dans la rue, devant un magasin de tapis orientaux, et se fait aborder par un clochard.

  • Infos sur le film
    - La Fox proposait ici un film de prestige, réunissant deux grands auteurs: le contemporain Steinbeck et le classique O. Henry (1862-1910), les meilleurs réalisateurs (Henry Hathaway, Howard Hawks, Henry King, Henry Koster et Jean Negulesco) et des stars confirmées (Charles Laughton, Richard Widmark) ou montantes (Anne Baxter, Jean Peters, Jeanne Crain et Marilyn Monroe dans une apparition savoureuse).
    - Le titre du film doit son nom à O. Henry, de son vrai nom William Sidney Porter, un auteur américain populaire, en particulier pour ses nouvelles, dont beaucoup ont été adaptées pour l'écran.
    - On peut entendre, dans la version originale du film, l'écrivain John Steinbeck introduire chacune des petites histoires.
    - Henry Koster, le metteur en scène du premier sketch (celui avec Marilyn Monroe), est surtout connu pour avoir réalisé le premier film en Cinémascope, The Robe (La Tunique -en 1953).
    - Traité en farce, le sketch de Howard Hawks ("The Ransom of Red Chief"), jugé médiocre (le scénariste Nunnally Johnson préféra même retirer son nom du générique !), fut parfois coupé, notamment en France, alors que les admirateurs du cinéaste y voyaient un condensé de son univers : un enfant précoce, des adultes infantiles, et même l'intervention d'un ours, comme dans Man's Favorite Sport (Le Sport favori d'un Homme - en 1964). Cette même nouvelle de O. Henry fut par la suite à l'origine du film de Henri Verneuil, Le Grand Chef (1959), avec Fernandel et Gino Cervi.

  • Retrouvailles passées et futures
    - Avec les acteurs suivants, Marilyn Monroe aura partagé l'affiche de La sarabande des pantins (mais pas forcément le même sketch):
    Anne Baxter : A Ticket to Tomahawk (Le petit train du Far-West -en 1950) et All About Eve (Ève -en 1950)
    Gregory Ratoff : All About Eve (Ève en 1950)
    David Wayne : As Young as you feel (Rendez-moi ma femme -en 1951), We're not married (Cinq mariages à l'essai -en 1952) et How to Marry a Millionaire (Comment épouser un millionnaire -en 1953)
    Richard Widmark : Don't Bother to Knock (Troublez-moi ce soir -en 1952)

    - Marilyn joue dans le premier sketch intitulé "The Cop and the Anthem" réalisé par Henry Koster; néanmoins, elle aura la chance de tourner sous la direction des autres réalisateurs (qui dirigèrent les autres sketchs du film):
    Howard Hawks (qui réalise ici le 4ème sketch "The Ransom of Red Chiefe"), dirigea par la suite Marilyn dans Monkey Business (Chérie, je me sens rajeunir -en 1952) et Gentlemen prefer Blonds (Les hommes préfèrent les blondes -en 1953).
    Henry Hathaway (qui signe ici le 2ème sketch "The Clarion Call") dans Niagara -en 1952.
    Jean Negulesco (qui signe ici le 3ème sketch "The Last Leaf") dans How to Marry a Millionaire (Comment épouser un millionnaire -en 1953).
