De Londres à Hollywood, raconté avec humour par la star elle-même, le parcours semé d’embûches de Joan Collins, fringante octogénaire et inoubliable visage de la série "Dynastie".

Enfant, elle collectionnait les images de stars, en rêvant de brûler les planches des théâtres du West End à Londres. Repérée par le cinéma à 16 ans, Joan Collins, née en 1933, fuit le désastre d’un mariage précoce, quand Howard Hawks la convoque dans la Rome de la dolce vita pour le tournage de La terre des pharaons. Le péplum propulse la petite Anglaise dans un Hollywood au crépuscule de son âge d’or. Starlette des gazettes, l’"Elizabeth Taylor des pauvres", comme la surnomment les mauvaises langues, y croise des producteurs prédateurs, dont Darryl F. Zanuck, et des icônes du septième art, comme la féroce Bette Davis, à qui elle donne la réplique dans The Virgin Queen, ou encore l’irrésistible Warren Beatty, auquel elle succombe. La douce Marilyn Monroe, elle, lui dispense des conseils pour "survivre", un art pourtant où l’actrice de La fille sur la balançoire de Richard Fleischer (1955) excelle déjà. Au fil des décennies, féministe et amoureuse, l’insolente Joan Collins enchaîne les mariages – cinq au total – et des films oubliables de la Fox, tout en élevant trois enfants. Mais alors que la comédienne disparaît peu à peu des radars du cinéma, la série Dynastie la hisse, au début des années 1980, au sommet de la célébrité planétaire.
 
Lucidité
Dans ce documentaire en forme d’autoportrait nourri d’archives, Dame Joan Collins – elle a été anoblie en 2015 – déroule non sans humour le parcours semé d’embûches d’une star de série B, entre Londres et Hollywood. Femme d’affaires et femme de cœur, l’actrice, adepte revendiquée du glamour, évoque ses combats pour s’imposer dans la vie comme à la scène. À l’aube des "années fric", c’est la télévision, s’amuse-t-elle, qui lui offre, avec le rôle de la redoutable Alexis de Dynastie, robes à épaulettes et coiffures kitsch comprises, la gloire tardive (récompensée d’un Golden Globe) que le cinéma lui refusait. Mais derrière l’exercice bien huilé de la professionnelle des talk-shows télévisés, avec formules dignes de publicités et anecdotes croustillantes, perce la lucidité d’une fringante octogénaire, ravie d’avoir profité du système du show-biz qui croyait l'exploiter.

Comment le génial provocateur Billy Wilder s’est hissé au sommet de Hollywood sans se compromettre. Au fil d’extraits de ses films transgressifs et d’entretiens à l’irrésistible espièglerie, une traversée de l’œuvre de cette légende du cinéma.

Chapeau, bretelles et billes rondes pétillantes de malice derrière de grosses lunettes, Billy Wilder ironise, avec son accent yiddish : "À la cinémathèque, les gens s’extasient trop. C’est l’orgasme permanent !" Juif d’origine autrichienne, Samuel Wilder (1906-2002) fuit l’Allemagne nazie dans les années 1930 pour poser ses valises à Hollywood. En plein âge d’or, l’ancien journaliste à l’anglais incertain est recruté par la Paramount pour sa plume féconde. Les scénarios de La huitième femme de Barbe-Bleue et Ninotchka – deux œuvres de son mentor sacré Ernst Lubitsch –, qu’il écrit en tandem avec le WASP et antisémite Charles Brackett, lui assurent bientôt le succès. Mais Billy Wilder veut passer derrière la caméra. Avec Uniformes et jupons courts, qui traite, sous couvert de légèreté, de pédophilie, ce provocateur signe une satire féroce de l’Amérique, quand le chef-d’œuvre Boulevard du crépuscule, servi par Gloria Swanson et William Holden, l’un de ses acteurs fétiches avec Jack Lemmon, demeure l’un des plus grands films sur Hollywood. Dans les années 1950, ce maître incontesté de la comédie, qui rompt avec la Paramount pour préserver son indépendance, fustige le puritanisme anglo-saxon en abordant la prédation masculine avec les faussement romantiques Sabrina et Ariane, l’adultère et le meurtre dans le très noir Assurance sur la mort, l’alcoolisme avec Le poison ou encore le travestissement dans le transgressif Certains l'aiment chaud. Mais son film préféré reste Le gouffre aux chimères, charge virulente contre le cynisme médiatique, toujours d’actualité.

Émotion et dérision
Entrelaçant extraits de sa prolifique filmographie et archives d’entretiens où son acuité se mâtine d’une réjouissante (auto)dérision, ce portrait documentaire explore en finesse l’œuvre de Billy Wilder. Il rappelle aussi qu’en 1945 le cinéaste exilé, dont la mère n’a pas survécu à Auschwitz, est le premier réalisateur américain à filmer Berlin en ruines et l’enfer des camps pour son documentaire Death Mills. S’appuyant sur l’éclairage d’historiens du cinéma et le témoignage touchant du fils de son complice scénariste I. A. L. Diamond, Clara et Julia Kuperberg (Joni Mitchell – Le spleen et la colère, Hannibal Hopkins & sir Anthony) montrent comment, sous le voile élégant de comédies éblouissantes, ce géant multiprimé du septième art savait comme nul autre révéler les dessous sombres du rêve américain.

Lot 93: MARILYN MONROE: VINTAGE 1950 ED CLARK PHOTO TRANSPARENCY (A1)
A vintage color photographic transparency - printed later - featuring Marilyn Monroe, originally taken by Ed Clark in 1950. She was 24.
Clark is most well known as a photographer for LIFE magazine. According to Clark, a friend called him in 1950 and asked if he wanted to photograph a "hot tomato." Monroe had just had a supporting role in The Asphalt Jungle and was about to appear in All About Eve. In a 1999 interview with Digital Journalist, Clark said:
"She was almost unknown then, so I was able to spend a lot of time shooting her...We'd go out to Griffith Park [in Los Angeles] and she'd read poetry. I sent several roles to LIFE in New York, but they wired back, 'Who the hell is Marilyn Monroe?'"
The photos were not published until after she became a star.

Retour sur la vie tumultueuse de Frank Sinatra (1915-1998), acteur et chanteur américain mythique, avec ses zones d’ombre et de lumière.

Fils d’immigrés italiens né près de New York, Frank Sinatra s’essaie d’abord à la boxe, avant de connaître ses premiers succès micro à la main. Au début des années 1950, son show télévisé fait un flop et le label qui l’a recruté le congédie. Mais il ne tarde pas à reprendre son ascension fulgurante grâce au septième art : il obtient un Oscar en 1954 pour Tant qu’il y aura des hommes de Fred Zinnemann, même si le bruit court alors qu’il aurait décroché son rôle grâce à la mafia. Qu'importe, la rumeur des liens qu'il entretient avec la pègre confère à l'étoile montante sa part de mystère et de soufre. Adoré par les femmes, le leader du Rat Pack s'est marié quatre fois, notamment avec les actrices Ava Gardner et Mia Farrow. Crooner le plus célèbre de l'Amérique, "The Voice" s'est éteint un jour de mai 1998, accédant au statut d'icône éternelle.
