Présentation: Auction includes David Gainsborough-Roberts curated collection of Marilyn Monroe film worn costumes, personal wardrobe, jewelry, and personal items. The sale features film costumes that represent an extensive portion of Marilyn’s acting career, from Niagara (20th Cent., 1953) to Some Like It Hot (United Artists, 1959). The auction celebrates Monroe’s life and consists of film costumes, designer wardrobe and costume jewelry, personalized gifts from Monroe, documents, personal correspondences and personal items.
Collector David Gainsborough-Roberts is known to have amassed the world’s largest collection of Marilyn Monroe memorabilia which he has carefully and lovingly curated for years.

Highlights from this historic sale include Seven of Marilyn’s most notable films are represented in this auction with many created by award winning designers and well known costumers of Hollywood yesteryear :
- a sheer black beaded and sequined dress worn by Monroe in her Golden Globe winning role Sugar Kane as she crooned “I’m Through With Love” in the award winning 1959 film Some Like it Hot;
- an elaborate embellished stage gown worn by Monroe as she sang “After You Get What You Want You Don’t Want It” in the 1953 comedy There’s No Business Like Show Business which was designed by one of Marilyn’s all-time favorite designers, William Travilla;
- a pink linen halter wiggle dress designed for Monroe by Dorothy Jenkins for the 1953 thriller Niagara;
- a green satin one-piece with black sequins and gold fringe worn by Monroe as she sang “That Old Black Magic” in the 1956 film Bus Stop;
- the white full-length gown of satin with sheer overlay embellished with faux pearls created by Academy Award nominated designer Beatrice Dawson and worn by Marilyn in “The Prince and The Showgirl,” the second of two films produced by Marilyn Monroe Productions.
- Additional film pieces offered include costumes from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes to Let’s Make Love and The Misfits, along with a pair of rhinestone earrings worn by Monroe in How To Marry A Millionaire and a pair of sequin embellished opera gloves from the Rachmaninoff scene of The Seven Year Itch.

Lot 89001 -  A Marilyn Monroe Star-Shaped Light Fixture, 1962.
Triangular-shaped panels made of opaque white glass, solidified within a metal frame, one portion opens to reveal the socket for a light bulb, electrical cord still attached but is cut so piece is not in working condition; evidently one of the many items Monroe famously purchased down in Mexico to furnish her new Spanish-style home in Brentwood; light fixture was later purchased by the current owner in 1964 directly from Dr. Gilbert Nunez who bought Monroe's house after her death; included with a letter from the current owner stating in part that the Nunez family told her that "Marilyn had this piece hanging in the corner of one of the rooms." (Please note this fixture needs re-wiring and its metal frame is rusted due to age.)

The grainy color snapshot showing this light fixture in Monroe's home is believed to have been taken by Eunice Murray [Monroe's weird housekeeper] who was helping the star with purchases for the home and with interior decoration. 

Lot 89002 - A Marilyn Monroe Decorative Rustic Chest, 1962.
Smallish in size (to set atop a table), made of wood with a metal overlay, adorned on entire surface with rows of blue, green, and red marbles inspersed with brass studs, brass ring on top front lid, four small pegs on bottom; evidently one of the many items Monroe famously purchased down in Mexico to furnish her new Spanish-style home in Brentwood; chest was later purchased by the current owner in 1964 directly from Dr. Gilbert Nunez who bought Monroe's house after her death; included with a letter from the current owner stating in part that the Nunez family told her this piece was "found in Marilyn's bedroom and she kept her jewelry in it." (Please note this piece is somewhat rusted due to age.)

 Lot 89003 -A Marilyn Monroe-Related Rustic Standing Candlestick, 1962.
Made of wood, hand-carved, in two parts that affix together at the center, one metal spike in top center for candle placement; purchased by the Nunez family after they bought Marilyn's house and on display in Marilyn's house (albeit after her death) until they sold this piece to the current owner sometime in the mid-1960s. To be clear, Marilyn Monroe never owned this piece, but it does have the distinction of "living" in her house for a few years in the 1960s! (Please note there are numerous natural cracks in the wood and there is candle wax on all sides.)

Oversized, with two handles on either side, hand-painted in colorful shades in a Spanish-style design; evidently one of the many items Monroe famously purchased down in Mexico to furnish her new Spanish-style home in Brentwood; vase was later purchased by the current owner in 1964 directly from Dr. Gilbert Nunez who bought Monroe's house after her death; included with a letter from the current owner stating in part that the Nunez family told her this piece was "left in the backyard near the swimming pool." By Edward Gordon-Craig, untitled, from a scene in "Hamlet," on wove paper, initialed in pencil in the lower right "EGC," placard mounted below work reads in part "From the estate of / Marilyn Monroe;" also included is a 'People' magazine from November 15, 1999 quoting the woman who bought this lot in the below-referenced auction.

On a small page of notebook paper with a six-hole punch left margin, written in blue ballpoint ink in the upper right corner "Alan / After two blocks - / Love & Kisses / Marilyn Monroe," further annotated in red ballpoint ink (in another hand) in the upper left corner "May 3, 1955;" consigned directly by 'Alan' and included with a handwritten letter from him outlining in part how he followed the star for a number of blocks in midtown Manhattan, jumped into an elevator with her, and asked for this autograph. (Please note the paper is now yellowed due to age.)

Lot 89007 -  A Marilyn Monroe Early Signature in an Autograph Book with Many Others, 1949.
On a mint green page, bound within an album with a navy blue leather cover, signed in turquoise fountain pen ink "To Bobby / Best Wishes / Marilyn Monroe;" (other side signed by Alan Curtis), an unusual early inscription by the then-starlet before she started using her more well-known sign-off of "Love & Kisses;" obtained in person in NYC by 'Bobby' when MM was there to promote the 1949 United Artists film she had a bit part in, "Love Happy;" the rest of the album is filled with other great movie star autographs (with inscriptions on both sides of the pages) though most (or none, even) of these actors would have known who Marilyn Monroe was in 1949; interestingly, years later, she would have an association with many of them who appear in this album like Frank Sinatra, Montgomery Clift, Charles Laughton, Jack Benny, Harold Lloyd, and Roddy McDowall; other autographs include those of Pearl Bailey, Fay Bainter, Ann Blyth, Ward Bond, Harry Carey, Jr., Donald Crisp, Robert Cummings, Dan Duryea, Dale Evans, Geraldine Fitzgerald, Joan Fontaine, Betty Garrett, Kathryn Grayson, Louis Hayward, Jean Hersholt, Ruth Hussey, Van Johnson, Buster Keaton, Peggy Lee, Oscar Levant, Ida Lupino, Virginia Mayo, Constance Moore, Dennis Morgan, Ozzie Nelson, Roy Rogers (who added "Trigger"), Alexis Smith, and Sonny Tufts, among a few others. Book cover shows minimal wear.

More Information:
"Marilyn Monroe is a beautiful girl!" were the words I was typing when as a 17 year-old, this picture of me was shot by a photographer from LifeMagazine in 1955. The photo, which actually appeared in the magazine a couple of months later, launched my own collection of Marilyn Monroe photos taken overseveral years by me and fivefellow teenage fans who became known as "The Monroe 6." During Marilyn's time in New York, I and the others photographed herin various locations around the city. We would then run to the drugstore to get our snapshots developed in multiples so that all of us could have all the shots we had taken of her (thus the reason for the different shapes and sizes of the photos my collection). In the era before Google and GPS and TMZ and smartphones, we were alerted to Marilyn's appearancesand whereabouts by sources ranging fromVariety Magazinetoher Upper East Side hairdresser. Marilyn got to know the six of us well as we journeyed around the city with her and I remember her always being gracious and friendly. We wanted nothing from her except the opportunity to take her picture or to get her autograph - and often times she would sign on the very photographs we had just taken of her the day before. After Marilyn died, I put these photographs in a closet for many decades, though over the last few years, I have posted a few of them on the Internet for fans to see. I am now ready to let others have my original 1950s-era snapshots of the movie star I had the luck and pleasure to see many times up close and in the flesh - Miss Marilyn Monroe! And she did not disappoint - she was absolutely beautiful as all these photos clearly indicate. When you saw her in person, shewas THE movie star, no doubt about it!

Film Footage

Lot 89027 -  A Marilyn Monroe Never-Before-Seen Piece of Color Film Footage from Korea, 1954.
Shot on 8mm, approximately 1 minute and 21 seconds long, footage shows MM walking outside with a soldier escort (as she wears pants and a bomber jacket) while dozens of other soldiers surround her (to take her photograph), then it shows her getting into a car, then it (briefly) shows her performing on stage (as she wears the purple spaghetti-strapped sequined dress); shot by the current owner's father when he was stationed in Korea, he had close access to the star during the walking sequences, but was farther away when she was on stage; the original 1954 film was on three separate reels as the soldier shot tons of footage that didn't include MM (it's of the Korean people, the landscape, and fellow American soldiers) but it has now been spliced together and put on one modern-day plastic reel; the three 1954-era metal reels are still included as is a DVD transfer so the footage can be viewed.

 A Marilyn Monroe signed United States Department of Defense Noncombatant’s Certificate of Identity. The card is signed “Norma Jean DiMaggio” and countersigned by the issuing officer. It is additionally marked “Void.” Monroe’s fingerprints are stamped on the back of the card, but no other information has been entered. It is well known that Monroe was issued an official Department of Defense identification card dated February 8, 1954, with a card serial number of 129278. This card’s serial number is 129279. The same issuing officer signed this card as well as Monroe's official ID card. Monroe visited Korea to entertain the troops while on her honeymoon with Joe DiMaggio in February 1954.

 An archive of continuity and publicity photographs for the film Bus Stop (20th Century, 1956). The collection includes approximately 100 publicity photographs stamped on verso by the Advertising Code Administration. Twelve of these photographs have been additionally stamped "Retouch as Indicated" in red ink, and the surface of the photo has been drawn on where censors indicated to make Marilyn Monroe's wardrobe less revealing in the photographs. Nineteen small black and white prints are also stamped by the Advertising Code Administration of Hollywood. Three black and white small prints are stamped "Marilyn Monroe Productions Approved by _______" on verso.  An archive of photographs of Marilyn Monroe taken by Joseph Jasgur in 1946. The photographs were taken of a 19-year-old Norma Jeane Dougherty, before she was Marilyn Monroe. Taken in Los Angeles for Blue Book Modeling Agency, these photographs comprise one of Monroe’s first modeling portfolios. It was this portfolio she presented to Ben Lyon, the casting director at 20th Century Fox who signed her to the studio and shortly after changed her name. Jasgur’s images of Norma Jeane Dougherty mark the beginning of her career and offer us a unique glimpse of Marilyn Monroe, before she was Marilyn.
All prints in this lot are from these early photoshoots and are directly from the estate of Joseph Jasgur. Included in the archive are approximately 400 color and black and white later prints, size 11 by 14 inches; approximately 120 black and white gelatin silver prints, size 8 by 10 inches; approximately 10 black and white gelatin silver prints, size 11 by 14 inches; some oversize prints, contact prints, and a wooden camera tripod used by Jasgur.
