C'est dans le contexte de sa tournée aux Etats-Unis pour promouvoir La pêche au trésor, que Marilyn Monroe arrive à New York, le 20 juin 1949. A sa descente de train à la gare de Grand Central, elle est vêtue d'un tailleur noir en laine (qu'elle a porté à la première du film à Rockford), et on lui fait tenir des (faux) cornets de glace et un petit ventilateur pour la mise en scène devant les photographes; les températures à New York étant plutôt élevées.

Marilyn racontera (via des entretiens accordés à Ben Hecht en 1954 qui seront publées dans "Confessions inachevées"):
"La veille de mon départ pour New York, afin de commencer ma tournée des États-Unis, j'ai réalisé que je n'avais presque pas de garde-robe.
"Je ne ferai pas vraiment une bonne publicité vêtue de vieux vêtements", ai-je dit à M. Cowan.
Il m'a donné 75 dollars pour que je puisse m'habiller pour la tournée. J'ai acheté trois tailleurs en laine pour 25 dollars chacun.
J'ai acheté des vêtements en laine parce que je me souvenais que New York et Chicago étaient dans le Nord. Et j'avais vu dans les films que ces villes étaient recouvertes de neige. J'avais oublié que c'était aussi l'été là-bas, comme à Los Angeles.
Quand le train s'est arrêté à New York, je pouvais à peine respirer, il faisait si chaud. Il faisait encore plus chaud que la chaleur que je connaissais à Hollywood. Mon tailleur de laine me donnait l'impression d'être dans un four.
L'attaché de presse qui supervisait mon voyage m'a fait poser sur les marches du train, la sueur dégoulinant sur mon visage et un cornet de glace dans chaque main. La légende des photos était la suivante : "Marilyn Monroe, la chose la plus sexy au cinéma, se rafraîchit."
Cette idée de "rafraîchissement" est devenue en quelque sorte la base de mon travail d'exploitation.
Une demi-heure après mon arrivée à New York, on m'a conduit dans une suite élégante du Sherry-Netherland Hotel et on m'a dit de mettre un maillot de bain. D'autres photographes sont arrivés et ont pris des photos de moi "en train de me rafraîchir"."

It is in the context of her promotionnal tour of the United States to promote Love Happy that Marilyn Monroe arrives in New York on June 20, 1949. When she gets off the train at Grand Central station, she is dressed in a black wool suit (which she wears to the film's premiere in Rockford), and she is made to hold (fake) ice cream cones and a small ventialtor for the setting in front of the photographers; as the temperatures in New York are rather high.

Marilyn will tell (via interviews granted to Ben Hecht in 1954 which will be published in "My Story"):
"The day before I left for New York to start the tour of the USA I realised I had almost no wardrobe.
"I won't be much of an advertisement in one old suit," I told Mr. Cowan.
He gave me 75 dollars to outfit myself for the tour. I bought three woollen suits for 25 dollars apiece.
I bought woollen suits because I remembered that New York and Chicago were in the North. I had seen them in the movies blanketed with snow. I forgot it was summertime there as well as in Los Angeles.
When the train stopped in New York I could hardly breathe, it was so hot. It was hotter than I had ever known it to be in Hollywood. The woollen suit made me feel as if I were wearing an oven.
The Press agent who was supervising my trip had me pose on the train steps with perspiration running down my face and icecream cone in each hand. The caption for the pictures read: "Marilyn Monroe, the hottest thing in pictures, cooling off."
That "cooling off" idea became sort of the basis for my exploitation work.
Half an hour after arriving in New York I was led into an elegant suite in the Sherry-Netherland Hotel and told to put on a bathing suit. More photographers arrived and took pictures of me "cooling off.""

Partie en train pour sillonner les grandes villes américaines afin de faire la promotion du film "La pêche au trésor", Marilyn Monroe arrive à Rockford, dans l'Illinois, le 12 juin 1949 et n'y reste que quatre jours: elle rencontre la presse locale, se rend à la piscine, se promène sous la pluie en mini short... Elle saisit la moindre occasion pour se faire photographier.

Leaving by train to travel through major American cities to promote the movie "Love Happy", Marilyn Monroe arrives in Rockford, Illinois, on June 12, 1949 and stays there only four days: she meets the local press, goes to the swimming pool, walks in the rain in mini shorts ... She takes every opportunity to be photographed.

Elle arrive à Rockford le dimanche 12 juin 1949 en début de soirée; un buffet est organisé pour son arrivée à l'hôtel Faust, lui permettant de rencontrer les journalistes de la presse locale (comme Charlie Ayres qui l'interviewera). Elle y boit un chocolat chaud avec du lait.

She arrives in Rockford on Sunday June 12, 1949 in the early evening; a buffet is organized for her arrival at the Faust hotel, allowing her to meet the journalists of the local press (as Charlie Ayres who will interview her). There she drinks hot chocolate with milk.

Le 13 juin, elle se rend à la piscine. Vêtue d'un maillot de bain deux pièces, elle discute avec les sauveteurs (Ruth Perkins et Don Casey).

On June 13, she goes to the swimming pool. Dressed in a two-piece swimsuit, she chats with the lifeguards (Ruth Perkins and Don Casey).

  Dans l'après-midi du 14 juin, se tient la première du film "Love Happy" au State Theatre. Sur le trottoir devant le théâtre, de gros travaux d'aménagement sont en cours; des ouvriers vont installer à la hâte un pont flottant avec un petit panneau où ils y ont inscrit: "Pour les pieds de Marilyn, seulement !"
Au théâtre, Marilyn va signer plusieurs autographes aux spectateurs, au dos des tickets d'entrée.

Témoignage d'un jeune habitant de l'époque, Tom Hallden:
"C'était le jour du drapeau, le 14 juin 1949, l'école était fermée et avec l'un de mes oncles, nous avons décidé d'aller au cinéma. J'ai entendu sa voix à la radio, et il s'est avéré que c'était celle de Marilyn Monroe. Cet après-midi-là, elle se produirait au State Theatre dans le bloc 100 de West State Street. Elle a joué un rôle dans le film des Marx Brothers, "Love Happy". Nous avons acheté nos billets, sommes entrés et elle était là, dans le hall arrière, derrière un comptoir. Nous nous sommes approchés d'elle. J'avais mon livre d'autographes et je le lui ai présenté et j'ai demandé son autographe. Elle l'a pris, m'a demandé mon nom et a écrit: "Bonne chance pour toujours, Tom, Marilyn Monroe". Je l'ai encore aujourd'hui parmi d'autres: Ronald Reagan, Hank Aaron, Mickey Rooney, Peter Graves, Roger Whitaker, Lee Grant et bien d'autres. C'était vraiment une belle jeune femme."

On the afternoon of June 14, the premiere of the movie "Love Happy" is held at the State Theater. On the sidewalk in front of the theater, major development work is underway; workers are going to hastily install a pontoon bridge with a small sign on which they have written: "For Marilyn's little feet, only!"
At the theater, Marilyn will sign several autographs for the spectators, on the back of the entrance tickets.

Testimony of a young resident of the time, Tom Hallden:
"It was Flag Day, June 14, 1949, school was out and an uncle of mine and I decided to go to a movie. I heard her voice on the radio, and it turned out to be that of Marilyn Monroe. That afternoon, she would be appearing at the State Theater in the 100 block of West State Street. She had a walk-on part in the Marx Brothers movie, "Love Happy." We bought our tickets, went in and there she was, in the back lobby behind a counter. We walked up to her. I had my autograph book and presented it to her and asked for her autograph. She took it, asked my name and wrote, "Best of Luck Always, Tom," Marilyn Monroe. I still have this today along with others: Ronald Reagan, Hank Aaron, Mickey Rooney, Peter Graves, Roger Whitaker and Lee Grant and others. She was truly a beautiful young lady."

Des séances de représentation du film ont lieu les jours suivants toujours au cinéma State Theatre: Marilyn est présente dans le hall du cinéma les mercredi 15 juin, et jeudi 16 juin - les actrices principales du film -Ilona Massey, Vera-Ellen et Marion Hutton- ainsi que la venue d'un des frères Marx avaient été annoncés dans la presse.

Screenings of the film take place the following days, always at the State Theater cinema: Marilyn is present in the lobby of the theatre on Wednesday, June 15, and Thursday, June 16 - the main actresses of the film -Ilona Massey, Vera-Ellen and Marion Hutton- as well as the arrival of one of the Marx brothers had been announced in the press.

La pêche au trésor

Le flipbook, ou en français « folioscope » est un petit livre qui se lit en faisant défiler les images. Inventé par le français Pierre-Hubert Desvignes en 1860, le folioscope est un précurseur des films d'animations car les images prennent vie et se mettent en mouvement, telle une animation, en faisant défiler les pages en continu très rapidement.
Les images sont soit intégrées dans un petit livret que l'on fait défiler manuellement avec le pouce; ou les images sont présentées en vignettes que l'on intègre dans un petit appareil (le mutoscope) permettant ainsi de visionner l'animation produite par le défilement des images.
Avec l'arrivée du cinéma, les flipbooks deviennent des supports publicitaires des longs métrages, vendus comme de petits livres ou jouets. Le film "Love Happy" lance plusieurs flipbook: trois sous la série de « Flip-O-Vision » produit par Topps Production sous les deux formats (en petits livres et en planche à vignettes à découper) et un produit par Movette, American Cinefoto Corp.

The flipbook, or in French "folioscope" is a small book that is read by scrolling through the images. Invented by Frenchman Pierre-Hubert Desvignes in 1860, the flipbook is a precursor of animated films because the images come to life and move, like an animation, by scrolling the pages continuously very quickly.
The images are either integrated into a small booklet that is scrolled manually with the thumb; or the images are presented in thumbnails that are integrated into a small device (the mutoscope) thus making it possible to view the animation produced by the scrolling of the images.
With the arrival of the cinema, flipbooks became advertising media for feature films, sold as little books or toys. The film "Love Happy" launches several flipbooks: three under the series of "Flip-O-Vision" produced by Topps Production in both formats (in small books and in cutting boards) and one produced by Movette, American Cinefoto Corp.

Le film commence par plusieurs coup de sifflets suivis d'un son de bip d'un télégramme, sur un plan de Groucho Marx assis à son bureau, casquette sur la tête et cigare aux lèvres, qui s'adresse directement au spectateur en regardant la caméra. Il nous met en garde, exigeant que personne ne sorte de la salle car les diamants de Romanoff ont disparu; suivi d'un plan d'un décolleté féminin portant une parure de diamants. Puis il se présente à nous: il est Sam Grunion, détective privé dont la devise est le secret; il le prouve en nous montrant sa carte de visite vierge de toute impression. Il nous présente son CV: il est à l'origine de la révélation du scandale des mines internationales d'Uranium, précisant que les services secrets (Scotland Yard et le FBI) avaient échoué dans leur enquête. Il explique ensuite l'objet de ce que sera la trame du film: cela fait 11 ans qu'il recherche les diamants de Romanoff qui valent un million de dollars. Il est actuellement sur une piste d'une troupe de théâtre en pleine préparation d'un show musical qui se nomme "Love Happy".

The film begins with several whistles followed by the sound of a telegram beeping, on a shot of Groucho Marx seated at his desk, cap on his head and cigar in his mouth, who speaks directly to the viewer while looking at the camera. He warns us, demanding that no one leave the room because Romanoff's diamonds are missing; followed by a shot of a female cleavage wearing a set of diamonds. Then he introduces himself to us: he is Sam Grunion, a private detective whose motto is secrecy; he proves it by showing us his unprinted business card. He presents his CV to us: he is at the origin of the revelation of the scandal of the international mines of Uranium, specifying that the secret services (Scotland Yard and the FBI) had failed in their investigation. He then explains the subject of what will be the plot of the film: he has been looking for Romanoff's diamonds, which are worth a million dollars, for 11 years. He is currently on the track of a theater troupe in full preparation for a musical show called "Love Happy".

Les plans qui suivent consistent au défilement du générique des crédits du film, inscrits sur des images de répétition de la troupe sur scène.
Pour son quatrième film qui sort sur les écrans, et le premier qu'elle tourne pour les studios United Artists, Marilyn Monroe figure en dernière position des crédits d'acteurs au générique: bien que son rôle soit mineur (une scène de 40 secondes), elle figure à l'écran suivant qui répertorie les seconds rôles.

The following shots consist of the scrolling credits of the film, inscribed on rehearsal images of the troupe on stage.
For her fourth film to be released on screens, and the first she has made for United Artists studios, Marilyn Monroe appears last in the credits of the actors in the credits: although her role is minor (a 40-second scene), she appears on the next screen that lists supporting roles.
