4-page letter dated June 15, 1944, written by Norma Jeane Dougherty to her former guardian Grace McKee Goddard.
She mentions photographic portraits that she had to do with a professional photographer, and that she would send her several of them.
She also talks about her husband Jim Dougherty who is absent: having left for the Pacific since the spring, Norma Jeane has moved in with the Dougherty parents and has been working at the Radioplane factory since April (hard work, 10 hours a day standing). We learn that she nevertheless tried to apply elsewhere (in the Army) but afraid of being surrounded only by men, she gave up, preferring to stay at the factory.
She also talks about her happiness to be married to Jim Dougherty and the love they have for each other.
Norma Jeane.
Letter transcription:
Dearest Grace,
I was so happy to hear from you. I was so thrilled to read you letter and learn of all that you have been doing able.
I will send you your picture very sortly now, I'm going down saturday to find out more about it. Also will send you lots of snapshots at the same time I send you the picture. I found out that a 10'x10' (that was the size you wanted wasn't it ?) cost exactly $ 5.00.
Jimmie has been gone for seven weeks and the first word I received from him was the day before my birthday. He sent a Cable Night Letter by Western Union saying "Darling, on your birthday, I send you a whole world of love." I was simple thrilled to death to hear from him.
I have never really written and told you of Jimmies and my married life together. Of course I know that if it hadn't been for you we not have ever been married and I know I owe you a lot for that fact alone, besides countless others. That is why I feel that I should let you know about us.
I love Jimmie just more than anyone (in a -?- way I suppose than anyone) and I know I shall never be happy with anyone else as long as I live, and I know he feels the same towards me. So you see we are really very happy together that is of course, when we can be together. We both miss each other terribly, we will be married for two years June 19th. And we really have had quite a happy life together.
I am working 10 hrs a day at Radioplane Co., at Metropolitan airport. I am saving almost everything I earn (to help pay for our future home after the war). The work isn't easy at all for I am on my feet all day and walking quite a bit.
I was all -?- to get a Civil Service Job with the army, all my papers filled out and everything set to go, and then I found out I would be working with all army fellows. I was over there one day, there are just too many wolves to be working with, there are enough of those at Radioplane Co. with out a whole army full of them. The Personal Officer said that he would hire me but that he wouldn't advice it for my own sake, so I am back at Radioplane Co. pretty contented.
Will I guess that is about all for now.
With much love,
Norma Jeane

* Date and place confused in official sources:
- Photos originally dated in 1954 in Los Angeles
(source: ArchivesMHG website at the time of online publication
photo sessions in thumbnail format)
- In the book "The essential Marilyn Monroe by Milton Greene" (2017)
and on the actual official website of Milton Greene (in 2019):
session listed in the "Peasant" album
and dated May 24, 1954, in the backlots of Fox Studio.
We also note the 2 sessions on the same contact sheet.
> However, these dates are wrong:
- The photographs of the " Peasant" sitting don't date from 1954
but from April 15, 1956: they were taken in the in the backlots of Fox Studio,
together with the "Grey Fur", "Hooker" and "Gypsy" series.
It's certain that they date from 1956 because in the series "Hooker",
Marilyn wears the blouse from the film "Bus Stop" shot in 1956.
- Another clue: Marilyn's hairstyle.
In 1954, her hair was short, with very worked curls.
In 1956, the hair was a little longer, the curls lighter.
- The clothing index: same style as for the "Cadillac" sitting taken in 1954
she wears a cropped top over a short black leggings.
- Indisputable clue: on this "Makeup" session,
she wears her Di Maggio diamond wedding ring,
although she was divorced in 1956 !

Inez Melson and her husband go to Marilyn's house at Fifth Helena Drive, to sort the belongings of the celebrity. Melson remembers that the night table was still cluttered with various bottles: "We found it constantly: sleeping pills, nembutal and seconal." Concerning about the reputation of Marilyn, Mrs. Melson then destroyed pills, throwing them in the toilet and taking the rest to put in the trash. She has later deeply regretted her actions.

At the beginning of March 1953, Marilyn Monroe barely finished shooting the movie Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, that she follows up a few days later with that of How to marry a millionaire. In these two films, Marilyn plays the role of a silly blonde who wants to meet a rich man. Photographer John Florea, assisted by Gene Trindl, will thus portray Marilyn as a seductive blonde, dressed in the clothes she wears in the two movies (outfits by William Travilla). The photoshoots taken in a studio in the spring of 1953 will thus serve as an advertising medium to promote the two 20th Century Fox films. The American magazine Collier's published an article "Gentlemen prefer Monroe" in June 1953 (> see 27/06/1953 Collier's ) where Marilyn puts herself in the skin of her character of Lorelei (the one she holds in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes) and Eye magazine publishes an article" Marilyn learns how to marry a millionaire" in September 1953 (> see 09/1953 Eye ) where the photographer Gene Trindl teaches Marilyn how to stage herself.

Miss Monroe's well-known and distracting qualities are suggested even when she sits in repose for a portrait. Her disturbing walk and talk made her a screen star. Then her songs in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and the popular record album from it sound track added something new to her reputation. A photographer ordinarily is pleased to get one fine portrait from a sitting by a subject. Any one of these ten pictures of a type preferred by gentlemen is good enough for a cover. One appears on the cover of this issue.
