After husband left with their two young children, Gladys Pearl Monroe illegitimately had her third child, Marilyn. However, she was unable to support her daughter and became a disturbing and distant figure in Marilyn's world.
- For a short period in Marilyn Monroe’s childhood, she was able to live with her mother. At the age of nine, her mother bought a small house where they lived together for three months.
- During this time Gladys Monroe purchased a second hand baby grand piano to put in the house. This became the only symbol of a happy moment in Marilyn Monroe’s childhood and it was something she would always cherish.
