Lot #385 MARILYN MONROE SIGNED & INSCRIBED BIRTHDAY CARD
A birthday card to Ana Lower’s nephew Max Ritchie from 15 year old Norma Jeane, signed and inscribed in Norma’s hand at bottom right: “To Max-/Happy Birthday/from-/Norma Jeane.” Also present is original transmittal envelope, handwritten on recto: “to Max Ritchie/from/Norma Jeane/March 22/41.” The following year Lower was responsible for “giving away the bride” during the wedding ceremony of Norma Jeane and Jim Dougherty. Also present are four black and white reproduction photographs of Norma Jeane as a teenager, most likely in Van Nuys, California (c. 1941); one featuring her with Max Ritchie, Ana Lower’s nephew (c.1941) posed on a street corner before a brick building, one with her and girlfriend and Max’s first wife Roslyn Anderson posed on a street of a residential neighborhood, one of her in a playful hitchhiking pose, standing before a sign reading: “School/Drive Slowly” on a residential street most likely in Van Nuys and one of her standing on a patch of grass on a residential street, each measuring 3 ½ by 5 inches.

 Lot #386 MARILYN MONROE – GRACE GODDARD EXPENSE DOCUMENT
A one page itemized list dated September through November 1941 in Goddard’s (Marilyn’s legal guardian) hand in pencil, detailing expenses and living costs spent on Norma Jeane. Present are expenses for Norma Jeane’s allowance, clothing, and beauty supplies. During that period, an affable Van Nuys neighbor named Jim Dougherty began driving the 15 year old Norma Jeane to and from Van Nuys High School. The two soon began dating and married the following year. 5 ½ by 9 inches.

  Lot #387 MARILYN MONROE-ELEANOR GODDARD LETTER
A two page letter (recto and verso) dated October 26, 1942 from Eleanor “Bebe” Goddard to Norma Jeane during her marriage to Jim Dougherty. In part reading (sic): “I know I’ve been awful at writing but I think of you so much…Jimmy and I are still getting along swell…I’ll write to you again next week if it kills me and tell you how my blind date goes… tell your lord and master (ha! ha! I mean Jimmy Dougherty) hello for me.” Together with original transmittal envelope dated October 30, 1942. Eleanor Goddard was Marilyn’s foster sister and was among the few close to her in her early life before fame and her transformation to Marilyn Monroe. The pair lived in a series of foster homes and spent several years together in Van Nuys, at the home of Goddard's father. They remained friendly until Marilyn’s death in 1962.

A two page letter dated October 7, 1944 from Gladys Baker to Marilyn’s half-sister Bernice Miracle. Composed while institutionalized at Agnew State Hospital, Gladys requests to be transferred to another hospital. In part (sic): “But if you would please write to the staff doctors here giving them your o.k. to let me go back to the other hospital (Norwalk) where I was before my Catholic aunt took me from there…” Together with vintage black and white photographs; one of Gladys leaning against a car and one of Bernice, inscribed on verso: “Mona Rae & Bernice Sorenson/July 18, 1842.” Photograph: 5 by 7 and 3 ½ by 5 inches. Lot #416 MARILYN MONROE – GLADYS BAKER ITEMS
A two page letter (c.1954) from Gladys Baker to Marilyn Monroe (then Norma Dougherty), composed in pencil on tissue paper while institutionalized at the Rockhaven Sanitarium in Verdugo, California. In the letter, Marilyn’s mother Gladys requests to be among people of her religion – Christian Science. In part reading (sic): “It is quite some time since I wrote you but I’ve not changed in that it is doing no one any good for me to be in here nor is it causing me to grow in Christian Science. As I told you before all Dr.’s are Sycratrists and they heal just the opposite the way they do in Christian Science. I am always bumping up against their manipulation of my mind which I know is not Christian Science…would you please remove me to a Christian Science Institution…” After a myriad of mental breakdowns, Gladys was committed to Rockhaven where she remained for nearly 15 years. Together with original transmittal envelope dated February 2, 1954. Also present is a black and white photograph of Gladys leaning against a car, gazing up from the camera’s lens. Lot #393 MARILYN MONROE PHOTOGRAPH BY ANDRE DE DIENES
A black and white vintage print photograph of Marilyn Monroe (c.1945), having photographer’s stamp on verso. 11 by 13 ½ inches. Reference: this photograph can be seen in de Dienes’ book, “Marilyn” (Taschen, 2002), page 50. De Dienes met 19 year old aspiring model Norma Jeane Dougherty in 1945 after requesting a model from her agents at Blue Book Modeling for a then upcoming project. They immediately bonded and traveled together through Western states to capture Norma Jeane in various natural settings. During that trip they became romantically involved and were briefly engaged. After their romance amicably ended, de Dienes continued to photograph Norma Jeane and well into her career as Marilyn Monroe. The chemistry between the two was undeniable; his work captured some of the finest images of the star. Many of the photographs can be seen in his book titled “Andre de Dienes/Marilyn” (Taschen, 2002).

A 1961-1962 Screen Actors Guild member card (unsigned) belonging to Marilyn Monroe, together with accompanying receipt dated December 7, 1961.
