Du 9 juillet au 22 septembre 2019, exposition Divine Marilyn à la Galerie Joseph de Paris. 

Pour la première fois en France, cette grande exposition sur 850m2 regroupera les trois plus grands noms de la photographie américaine : Sam Shaw, Milton Greene et Bert Stern - qui ont immortalisé Marilyn Monroe à différentes époques de sa vie au travers de près de 200 photos ou documents. 
Elle sera réalisée avec la collaboration de Meta et Edith Shaw, filles de Sam Shaw ; Joshua Greene, fils de Milton Greene, et Olivier Lorquin, Président de la Fondation Dina Vierny – Musée Maillol pour Bert Stern.

L’exposition visera à montrer à travers des clichés inédits que Marilyn était loin d’être la « Pin-up blonde » qu’elle prétendait être et qui lui avait servi de masque lors de chaque sortie publique, mais qu’elle était également une femme enjouée et vraie, loin de l’image à laquelle elle est souvent rattachée.
Marilyn a réussi à construire sa propre histoire et sa légende, au-delà de l’image emblématique que les industries de la publicité et du cinéma ont fait d’elle.

 Sam Shaw

De 1952 à 1962, Sam Shaw capture un grand nombre de clichés de la vie privée de la pin-up, notamment son quotidien de jeune épouse auprès du dramaturge Arthur Miller, une période où elle semble comblée de bonheur.
50 photos respirant la simplicité seront exposées dans ce corner, mais aussi des clichés emblématiques, comme celui de Marilyn retenant l’envolée de sa robe blanche au-dessus d’une bouche de métro à New York, sur le tournage du film de Billy Wilder « Sept ans de réflexion ».

Milton Greene

  Un autre corner mettra en avant 50 photos du photographe Milton Greene. Des clichés iconiques qui ont fait le tour du monde comme ceux de la star en tenue de ballerine.
Grâce à son travail tout en finesse et en élégance, Milton Greene rappelle la capacité de cette femme aux mille visages à changer de personnage avec un naturel qui étonne.
nb: Joshua Greene, le fils de Milton sera présent au vernissage.

Bert Stern

  Mondialement connu pour avoir été le dernier photographe à immortaliser Marilyn Monroe, Bert Stern sera également à l’honneur à travers l’exposition de douze tirages grands formats de la « dernière » séance photo de Marilyn qu’il réalise pour Vogue en 1962, quelques jours avant sa disparition. Une séance photos qui durera 3 jours pendant lesquels 2571 photos seront shootées.
Stern avait capturé une Marilyn sans fards, dans un moment de liberté et d’abandon mais c’est elle-même qui avait choisi les photos sur les planches contact avec le souci constant de contrôler son image.

Symbole de la culture Pop et du Street-Art, Marilyn est souvent revisitée sous d’autres formes. Collages, pochoirs et dessins, une quinzaine d’oeuvres d’artistes émergents y seront exposées.

Norma Jean avant Marilyn
L’exposition retracera également le parcours et la métamorphose de Norma Jeane Baker en Marilyn Monroe.
Un morphing photo depuis ses clichés de bébé jusqu’à cette jeune fille aux boucles brunes qui rêvait de devenir célèbre.
Elle avait très vite compris  que  si elle faisait un grand nombre de couvertures de magazine, elle deviendrait vite très populaire. La jeune femme multiplie donc les séances photos, que ce soit pour gagner sa vie comme avec ce calendrier de 1949 où elle apparaît nue, ou pour construire les premiers échelons de sa carrière. En posant devant une multitude de photographes, Marilyn Monroe voulait être regardée et aimée par le public, mais aussi remarqué par les studios de cinéma.

Marilyn pendant la guerre de Corée
Alors qu’elle était en voyage de noces en Japon avec son mari Joe DiMaggio, Marilyn s’est rendue en Corée pour divertir les soldats américains à la fin de la guerre de Corée en 1954. Un épisode méconnu de sa vie que les commissaires d’exposition ont pu recréer grâce à des films d’archives et des clichés réalisés par les quatre photographes officiels mais aussi par des photos prises par les soldats eux-mêmes.

Tournage de "Sept ans de réflexion"
Un corner consacré à l’histoire de la photo la plus célèbre et la plus sulfureuse du cinéma hollywoodien. Une scène culte qui élèvera Marilyn au rang des légendes mondiales, mais qui provoquera aussi son divorce avec Joe DiMaggio.

 Lot 143: MARILYN MONROE WORN BLACK COLOBUS COAT
A mid-1940s black colobus coat worn by Marilyn Monroe to the 1948 film premiere of The Emperor Waltz (Paramount, 1948). The coat has broad shoulders, a cordé collar, a satin lining, and a Jerrold's Van Nuys, Calif. label. Although the black colobus is currently on the endangered species list, it was quite fashionable in the 1940s. Monroe wrote in a letter to Grace Goddard dated December 3, 1944, "I found out that its [sic] possible to buy a Gold Coast Monkey Coat. I shall write to you about it later." The coat was gifted from Monroe to Jacquita M. Rigoni (Warren), who was the great-niece to Anne Karger, mother of Monroe's voice coach, Freddie Karger. Monroe had a close relationship with the family, and the coat has remained in their possession. Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Jacqui Rigoni detailing the family's relationship to Monroe and the history of the coat.
The monkey species used to make this Marilyn Monroe monkey fur coat is on the Endangered Species list. U.S. Endangered Species Act regulations required by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service impose certain regulations on the sale of this coat. Please read the following carefully:

Lot 144: MARILYN MONROE FAN FROM THE PRINCE AND THE SHOWGIRL
A vintage lace fan used by Marilyn Monroe in the film The Prince and the Showgirl (Warner Bros., 1957). The folding hand fan is used by Monroe in the ballroom scene in the film. The frame and guard are embellished with floral motif carvings embellished with pink, blue, and gold-metallic paint. The accompanying letter from the consignor explains that the fan was gifted by Monroe to William Louis George Le Brun, known as Louis Le Brun in the film industry, who was the Chief Production Accountant for Warner Bros. in the United Kingdom. When Monroe was taken ill while filming, Le Brun, who was responsible for overseeing the distribution of all finances, which involved the insurance and wellbeing of the cast and production team, stayed by her side. As a thank-you, Monroe gave him this fan, or more specifically gave the fan to his wife as an apology for keeping Le Brun from his family. At the time the fan was received several of the fan blades were broken, presumed to be from use during filming. The fan has remained in the possession of the Le Brun family since the gift was made by Monroe.

A double-sided two-page letter written to Marilyn Monroe from "Uncle Art," who was a relative of Monroe's foster mother, Grace Goddard. The letter reads in part "So glad you are making satisfactory progress in school. I advise that you be particularly diligent in the cultural subjects...sad is the fate of the young woman who has not the ambition to so model and mold her language and conduct as to have [illegible] herself to the point where she can mingle with cultured people inconspicuously." The letter is written on International Correspondence Schools of Scranton, Pennsylvania, stationery, undated and signed "Devotedly Yours, Uncle Art."

 Lot 155: MARILYN MONROE BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S SCRIPT AND REPORT
A clean copy of the screenplay for Breakfast at Tiffany's written by George Axelrod and dated July 9, 1959. Monroe was considering the part, and she sought the opinions of her professional team including the Strasbergs, her husband, and management team. The script is accompanied by a single-page, typed "report" dated September 23, 1959, which also has the name "Parone" typed to the left of the date. Literary luminary Edward Parone was at the time running Monroe's production company and most likely is the one who wrote this single-page, scathing review of the script, leading with the simple sentence, "I think not." It goes on to criticize the screenplay, determining, "I can see Marilyn playing a part like Holly and even giving this present one all the elan it badly needs, but I don't feel she should play it: it lacks insight and warmth and reality and importance." It has been long reported that Monroe declined the part upon the advice of Lee Strasberg, but this document provides further evidence that other people in her inner circle advised her not to take the role. Lot 158: MARILYN MONROE MEDICAL FILE
A medical file pertaining to cosmetic surgery performed on Marilyn Monroe. The file includes facial X-rays and doctors' notes from the office of Dr. Michael Gurdin, M.D., and the X-ray office of Drs. Conti and Steinberg. Dr. Gurdin's chart on Monroe begins on July 14, 1958, and lists the patient as Marilyn Miller with addresses in New York and Los Angeles. The chief complaint listed is "chin deformity" and goes on to give a medical history that begins in 1950 and ends in 1962. Listed are a 1956 bout of neutropenia in England; 1957 ectopic pregnancy in New York; and 1950 cartilage implant in chin that the doctor observed had slowly begun to dissolve. Those with knowledge of the implant procedure have explained that this was done in association with a tip rhinoplasty, a procedure involving the tip of Monroe's nose only, not the bones. The last entry is dated June 7, 1962, and reports a fall at between 2 and 3 a.m. resulting in swelling and tenderness of the nose. Monroe was brought to Dr. Gurdin by her psychoanalyst, Dr. Ralph Greenson. Monroe was referred to Drs. Conti and Steinberg for X-rays. For her visit to the radiologists she was given the alias "Miss Joan Newman," and that name appears on the paperwork with Monroe's Brentwood home address. Six X-rays are in the folder: a frontal facial bones X-ray; a smaller X-ray that is a composite of the right and left sides of her nasal bones; and four small dental X-rays into the roof of Monroe's mouth, looking upward toward the nasal bones. The conclusion, written by Dr. Conti and dated June 7, 1962, is that there was no damage to Monroe's nose due to her fall. A more recent evaluation of the X-rays indicates a very minute hairline fracture of this bone. Monroe had turned 36 less than a week earlier. On June 8, the following day, Monroe was fired from the film Something's Got to Give (20th Century Fox, 1962).

An original Bob Mackie costume design sketch for Marilyn Monroe in her role as Ellen Arden in the unfinished film Something’s Got To Give. The mixed media on board sketch shows Monroe wearing the complete costume suit consisting of a fur-trimmed coat and shift dress. At right, a smaller sketch shows the costume without the jacket, and at left is a small sketch of the back neckline. A fabric swatch is affixed to the upper right corner. The sketch is initialed “T.S.M.” in the upper right corner and dated “5/14/62” on verso. Mackie created this sketch as a 22-year-old in his first Hollywood job working as a sketch artist for Jean Louis. Monroe liked the Jean Louis designed costume so much she wore the ensemble to her last public appearance, a charity event for muscular dystrophy held at Dodger Stadium on June 1, 1962. Accompanied by the book Marilyn in Fashion: The Enduring Influence of Marilyn Monroe by Christopher Nickens and George Zeno (Philadelphia: Running Press, 2012) featuring an image of Monroe on set wearing this costume.

 An original Bob Mackie costume design sketch for Marilyn Monroe in her role as Ellen Arden in the unfinished film Something’s Got To Give (20th Century, 1962). The mixed media on board sketch shows Monroe in a red skirt suit with a swing jacket trimmed in leopard print and a leopard hat. Two fabric swatches are affixed to the board at upper right corner. A small piece of paper is affixed to the upper left corner with typed information that reads “Outfit Worn On Day Off/ Also In Courtroom Sequence” with handwritten notations in an unknown hand. Additional sketches appear to the right of the primary image, and three sketches of different aspects of the costume are drawn on verso. Notations on verso in upper left corner and dated “2-23-62.” The sketch was created by Mackie as a 22-year-old in his first Hollywood position as a sketch artist for costume designer Jean Louis.

Hugh Herbert, 149 pp, February 19, 1947 (with revision pages dated as late as March 4), burgundy leather cover stamped in gilt to upper cover with film's title and "F. Hugh Herbert." Some pages annotated in ink by Wood, who also inscribed her name, character's name address, and phone number on the title page, and some of her dialogue in pencil on the verso of the last page. This was Wood's eighth film, but is better remembered as the movie in which Marilyn Monroe utters her first speaking role.

John Huston's film noir The Asphalt Jungle marked one of Marilyn Monroe's most important early, breakthrough roles, as gangster Emmerich's (Louis Calhern's) much younger moll, Angela. At the time, Monroe was virtually unknown and this contract states she received only $300 per week for her work on the film.

Lot 207: A Marilyn Monroe suit from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

Twentieth Century-Fox, 1953. Gray wool jacket with cream-colored embroidered linen collar, wired so that it stands, hook-and-eye and black button closure at the center, fitted at the hips, with partial gray crepe lining; together with a matching knee-length pencil skirt with a navy grosgrain waistband and buttons that attach to the jacket (to prevent the skirt from moving when Monroe danced), and a small slit in the back, bearing a bias label inscribed in black ink, "1-69-1194 M. Monroe A-698-40." Monroe, as Lorelei Lee, wears this suit when she and Dorothy (Jane Russell) go shopping in Paris, the hotel refuses them, and they wind up at a sidewalk café, singing "When Love Goes Wrong."
Provenance: Purchased by Debbie Reynolds from Fox in 1971; Butterfield & Butterfield, Entertainment Memorabilia, March 14, 2000, lot 5842.
A 1949 musical based on a novel by Anita Loos, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes was initially purchased by Fox as a vehicle for Betty Grable. However in light of Grable's waning popularity and comparatively high salary (almost ten times Monroe's), studio head Darryl Zanuck decided to cast the starlet Monroe instead, borrowing Jane Russell from RKO to serve as her costar. Gentlemen Prefer Blondes was a massive success and 1953 became Monroe's breakout year. She and Jane Russell put their handprints in cement at Grauman's Chinese Theater to celebrate the film's premiere, Monroe appeared on the cover of Photoplay and received its Fastest Rising Star award, and also appeared on the cover of the inaugural issue of Playboy.

Lot 208: A Marilyn Monroe red saloon gown from River of No Return

Twentieth Century-Fox, 1954. 19th century style saloon gown with a red cotton bodice adorned with large black sequins in a swirling pattern with black sequin trim along the neckline and each of the three shoulder straps, a black satin bustled skirt with matching red cotton trim with black sequins on either side of a high slit, and a yellow silk rose at the hip, bearing a label inscribed in black ink, "1-25-1-4413 A713-06 / M. Monroe"; and a matching pair of red cotton panties with red lace and green ribbon trim, bearing a label inscribed in black ink, "1-25-1-4413 A713-06 / M. Monroe" and a Fox cleaning tag. Monroe wears this dress while singing "One Silver Dollar" in the saloon.

River of No Return stars Monroe as Kay Weston, a singer in a mining tent city in the Northwestern United States. Matt Calder (Robert Mitchum) arrives there in search of his son Mark and meets Kay, who has been looking after the child. Kay and her fiancé (Rory Calhoun) later set off on a rafting trip to Council City, and Matt rescues them after they run into trouble on the river. River of No Return was directed by Otto Preminger and shot on location in national parks in Canada to take advantage of the beautiful appearance of the landscapes on CinemaScope.
Monroe wears this dress in her first scene of the film. As Robert Mitchum enters the tent and walks around the stage, watching Monroe sing and strum a guitar, neither he nor the audience can take his eyes off of her. The image of Monroe in the dress also appears on the original one sheet poster and features prominently in the other promotional material surrounding the film.

Celebrity photographer Bert Stern is intimately linked with Monroe by the 2,500 photographs he took of her for Vogue less than two months before her untimely death. Stern later compiled those photographs for his book The Last Sitting, and this photograph was printed as part of a portfolio of ten prints in 1978. This sultry close-up of Monroe is a classic example of her vamping for Stern's camera.

Lot 215: A Marilyn Monroe signed U.S. Dept. of Defense identification card

Card serial no. 129279, undated, signed ("Norma Jeane DiMaggio"), inscribed under the signature by the military policeman who issued the ID, with "VOID" across the body of the document. On the verso of the card, Monroe has stamped her fingerprints in black ink. Accompanied by a press photograph of Monroe visiting the Tokyo Army Hospital on February 5, 1954.
This is the file copy of the ID card issued to Marilyn Monroe during her famous visit to entertain the American soldiers in Korea. Monroe had just married Joe DiMaggio on January 14 of that year, and they traveled to Japan for their honeymoon. She received this ID card from the US Army Provost Marshall's Office in Tokyo before flying to Korea. Monroe performed in ten shows over four days before a total audience of 100,000 soldiers.
In 2008, Bonhams sold Monroe's copy of this ID card, with the date February 8, 1954, the preceding serial number of 128278 and an identical inscription from the MP on duty, for $57,000.
Provenance: Accompanied by a notarized letter of provenance from the consignor, describing how he purchased the ID card from the estate of one of the military policemen on duty that day.

George Cukor's Let's Make Love was Marilyn Monroe's penultimate completed film role. Yves Montand stars as a man impersonating an actor impersonating himself in a play costarring actress Amanda Dell (Monroe). The finished film runs 119 minutes, which indicates that various scenes were probably deleted from this lengthy script. Monroe's then-husband Arthur Miller and Hal Kanter also contributed to the screenplay.
 

Lot 219: A large collection of rare contact sheets of Marilyn Monroe in Let's Make Love

Twentieth Century-Fox, 1960. 134 contact sheets, in two sets bound at tops in clasps (one set totaling one-hundred and twenty-one sheets; the other, thirteen), each with twenty (though sometimes less) 2 3/4 x 1 3/4 in. black and white photographs, "Approved Set" inscribed on first sheet of smaller set in permanent marker, Advertising Code Administration "Approved" and "Disapproved" stamps on versos with dates in green and red ink, housed in a Kodak Photographic Paper box inscribed, "Monroe / Somethings [sic] Got to Give" (though the photographs are from Let's Make Love).
Taken throughout the production of Marilyn Monroe's penultimate film, there are approximately 2,700 individual black and white images in this collection. Monroe is pictured in almost every shot, though her costars Yves Montand, Tony Randall, Gene Kelly, Bing Crosby, and others are also prominently featured, as is director George Cukor. Most of the photographs were taken during filming, but there are also many candid, behind-the-scenes images. Monroe herself went through the contact sheets and crossed out dozens of images she didn't like, using a thick black or red ink pen, and sometimes crossing herself out so thoroughly that she couldn't be seen at all. Thankfully, she left hundreds of shots untouched.
