Ladies of the Chorus - scène 17 - Captures
Mrs. Carroll explains that her husband was in business and had officies in major US cities (New York, Chicago, Los Angeles); it is then that she asks Mae what her husband was doing. Mae, embarrassed, looks at Randy, who replies that her husband was in business in Boston. But Ms. Carroll wants to know more. Luckily for the Martins, the butler Mr Salisbury (Steven Geray) arrives to ask at Mrs. Carroll to come as there is a phone call for her. So Mrs. Caroll leaves the living room.
Mae then asks Randy why he didn't keep his promise to tell the truth to his mother, about their activities (the Martins, mother and daughters, are show dancers and singers). Randy explains that he prefers that his mother know them better before telling her the truth. Mae disapproves of the lie, while Peggy supports Randy.
When Mrs. Carroll comes back, Randy pretends that he has not seen the time pass and that he must go out to do an activity with Peggy. His mother reminds him to come back on time for dinner and then Randy and Peggy go out. Mrs. Carroll invites Mae to participate, after dinner, to play bridge with her friends.
