Décès de Donald Spoto

  L'écrivain américain Donald Spoto est décédée le 11 février 2023 à l'âge de 81 ans à Køge au Danemark, suite à une hémorragie cérébrale. Il est l'auteur d'une biographe sur Marilyn Monroe (en 1993) qui reste, encore aujourd'hui, une référence.
Donald Spoto a connu plusieurs vies entremêlées: il fut moine, théologien professeur d'université, biographes de célébrités lui permettant même de devenir ami avec certaines.
Donald Spoto était homosexuel. Il a épousé son conjoint Ole Flemming Larsen en 2003, et le couple s'était installé au Danemark.

American writer Donald Spoto died on February 11, 2023 at the age of 81 in Køge, Denmark, after a brain hemorrhage. He is the author of a biographer on Marilyn Monroe (in 1993) which remains, even today, a reference.
Donald Spoto has known several intertwined lives: he was a monk, theologian, university professor, biographers of celebrities even allowing him to become friends with some.
Donald Spoto was gay. He married his partner Ole Flemming Larsen in 2003, and the couple had settled in Denmark.

Né le 28 juin 1941 à New Rochelle (dans la banlieue nord de New York), son père Michael était photographe commercial et sa mère Anne (Werden) Spoto travaillait au service d'information publique de New Rochelle. À la fin des années 1950, il joue dans plusieurs productions d' une troupe de théâtre locale (Fenimore Players) dont son père a été le président pendant un certain temps.
Il intègre un ordre religieux enseignant à l'âge de 19 ans. Il n'est pas ordonné prêtre et quitte l'ordre avant de prononcer ses vœux définitifs à l'âge de 26 ans.
En 1963, il obtient une licence en lettres classiques, maîtrisant le grec et le latin, mais aussi le français (dans sa jeunesse, il a découvert la France en baroudeur, avec juste son sac à dos). Grand cinéphile, il admire le réalisateur François Truffaut, qui lui délivre une apparition dans son film "L'homme qui aimait les femmes" en 1977. Toute sa vie, il reviendra en France en villégiature, notamment en Provence, du côté de Mougins, pour y passer ses vacances.

En 1966, il passe une maîtrise de théologie et, en 1970, son doctorat. De 1966 à 1984, il enseigne la théologie à l'Université de Fairfield dans le Connecticut puis à l'Université de New Rochelle, dans l'État de New York, enfin à la New School for Social Research. Il publiera quatre essais sur la religion: Un inconnu nommé Jésus (1998), une vie de saint François d'Assise, une autre de Jeanne d'Arc (2007) et un livre sur la prière.
En 1973 et 1974, il travaille dans une agence de publicité, "principalement parce que je voulais découvrir à quoi ressemblait le monde réel" déclarera-t-il plus tard.

Born on June 28, 1941 in New Rochelle (North of New York), his father Michael was a commercial photographer and his mother Anne (Werden) Spoto worked at the New Rochelle public information department. In the late 1950s, he acted in several productions of a local theater group (Fenimore Players) of which his father was president for a time.
He joined a teaching religious order at the age of 19. He was not ordained a priest and left the order before taking his final vows at the age of 26.
In 1963, he obtained a degree in classics, mastering Greek and Latin, but also French (in his youth, he discovered France as an adventurer, with just his backpack). A great cinephile, he admired the director François Truffaut, who gave him an appearance in his film "The Man Who Loved Women" in 1977. All his life, he returned to France on vacation, especially in Provence, near Mougins, to spend his holidays there. 

In 1966, he passed a master's degree in theology and, in 1970, his doctorate. From 1966 to 1984, he taught theology at the University of Fairfield in Connecticut, then at the University of New Rochelle, in the State of New York, and finally at the New School for Social Research. He will publish four essays on religion: "The Hidden Jesus: a new life" (1998), a life of Saint Francis of Assisi, another of Joan of Arc (2007) and a book on prayer.
In 1973 and 1974, he worked in an advertising agency, "mainly because I wanted to find out what the real world was like", he would later declare.

Il n'a que 9 ans quand il lit "Crime et Châtiment": « Je l'avais trouvé magnifique et terrifiant », dira-il. À 11 ans, après avoir vu le film "Le Masque arraché" avec l'actrice Joan Crawford, il lui envoie une lettre à laquelle la star lui répond, très étonnée par ce jeune ado qui avait aussi lu le roman noir d'Edna Sherry, dont le film est l'adaptation. Il gardera la lettre comme un talisman.

Alongside religion, cinema and literature have always been part of his life. He was only 9 years old when he read "Crime and Punishment": " I found it magnificent and terrifying ", he will say. At 11, after seeing the film "Sudden Fear" with actress Joan Crawford, he sent her a letter to which the star replied, very surprised by this young teenager who had also read the black novel by Edna Sherry, of which the film is the adaptation. He will keep the letter as a talisman.

  Il était surtout fasciné par Alfred Hitchcock: il découvre pour la première fois l'un de ses films quand il a 10 ans, "L'inconnu du Nord-Express" au cinéma du RKO Proctor's Theatre de New Rochelle. Il fait donc des recherches approfondies sur le travail du cinéaste qu'il parvient même à rencontrer au milieu des années 1970, après lui avoir envoyé uné ébauche de son travail -en fait, trois chapitres de son premier livre sur lui- espérant ainsi pouvoir le rencontrer: "Deux semaines après, j'ai reçu une lettre m'invitant sur le tournage de Complot de famille. J'y suis resté deux semaines. Nous avons parlé de tous ses films. Ce n'est qu'ensuite, je crois, que j'ai écrit à la princesse de Monaco, n'espérant encore pas grand-chose. Mais à ma grande surprise, j'ai reçu, quatre jours après, une lettre de Grace Kelly qui m'invitait dans son appartement parisien de l'avenue Foch. C'est là qu'elle me proposa d'écrire la préface de mon livre sur Hitchcock. Quel cadeau ! Ce fut le commencement de notre amitié." Et le début de sa carrière de biographe.

  Son premier livre "The Art of Alfred Hitchcock: 50 Years of His Motion Pictures" sort en 1976. Ce n'est pas tant une biographie mais plutôt un guide du cinéphile. Ce n'est qu'en 1983, qu'il publie sa biographie sur Alfred Hitchcock "The Dark Side of Genius: The Life of Alfred Hitchcock", soit trois ans après la mort de son sujet. Une biographie approfondie qui coupait à travers l'image soigneusement cultivée que le réalisateur avait cherché à projeter et plongeait dans son traitement sévère de certaines de ses stars et d'autres détails peu flatteurs. Pourtant, dans sa critique, le très sérieux Times notera cependant le manque de recul de l'auteur déclarant que " M. Spoto enregistre consciencieusement toute la méchanceté et la malignité du personnage d'Hitchcock - comme les signes forts d'une attitude sadique envers les femmes, mais, puisqu'il vénère l'art d'Hitchcock, il se donne parfois des moyens désespérés pour montrer comment tous ces défauts du personnage "enrichissent" son travail ». 
Il va même jusqu'à enseigner un cours sur Alfred Hitchcock à la New School de Manhattan, qui était si populaire que des étudiants ont été refusés.

  Lors de ses multiples rencontres avec Grace Kelly, avec qui il converse des heures durant, elle lui déclare sous forme de boutade «Quand je serai partie, je vous demande d'attendre vingt-cinq ans avant de publier votre livre sur moi; car j'espère vivre encore longtemps». Comme avec «Hitch», il semble fasciné par la beauté et l'extrême gentillesse de l'actrice. «C'était une très très bonne personne», aimera-t-il répéter. La biographie qu'il lui a consacrée, sortie en 2009, est un exercice d'admiration.

He was especially fascinated by Alfred Hitchcock: he discovered one of his films for the first time when he was 10 years old, "Strangers on a Train" at the cinema of the RKO Proctor's Theater in New Rochelle. " The film completely wiped me out. It devastated me. I found its imagery overpowering. And after that, I found that every single Hitchcock film that came along absolutely mesmerized me." he will later say.
He therefore did extensive research on the work of the filmmaker whom he even managed to meet in the mid-1970s, after having sent him a draft of his work - in fact, three chapters of his first book on him - hoping thus to be able to meet: “Two weeks later, I received a letter inviting me to the filming of 'Family Plot'. I stayed there for two weeks. We talked about all his movies. It was only then, I believe, that I wrote to the Princess of Monaco, still not hoping for much. But to my great surprise, four days later, I received a letter from Grace Kelly inviting me to her Parisian apartment on Avenue Foch. It was there that she asked me to write the preface to my book on Hitchcock. Which gift ! It was the beginning of our friendship.” And the beginning of his career as a biographer.
His first book "The Art of Alfred Hitchcock: 50 Years of His Motion Pictures" was released in 1976. It's not so much a biography but more of a guide for the cinephile. It was not until 1983 that he published his biography on Alfred Hitchcock "The Dark Side of Genius: The Life of Alfred Hitchcock", three years after the death of his subject. It was a thorough biography that cut through the carefully cultivated image that the director had sought to project and delved into his harsh treatment of some of his stars and other unflattering details. However, in its review, the very serious Times will however note the lack of hindsight of the author declaring that "Mr. Spoto dutifully records all the meanness and malignity of Hitchcock’s character — such as the strong signs of a sadistic attitude toward women, but, since he worships Hitchcock’s art, he goes to sometimes desperate lengths to show how all these character failings ‘enrich’ his work".
He even goes so far as to teach a course on Alfred Hitchcock at the New School in Manhattan, which was so popular that students were turned away.

During his many meetings with Grace Kelly, with whom he converses for hours, she declares to him in the form of a joke “When I will be dead, I ask you to wait twenty-five years before publishing your book on me; because I hope to live a long time still”. As with “Hitch,” he seems fascinated by the beauty and extreme kindness of the actress. "She was a very, very good person," he would like to repeat. The biography he dedicated to her, released in 2009, is an exercise in admiration.

Certaines de ses biographies feront grand bruit et seront médiatisées, faisant parfois l'objet de critiques comme celle sur Laurence Olivier où il déclare que l'acteur et réalisateur britannique aurait eu une liaison homosexuelle pendant 10 ans avec l'acteur comique américain Danny Kaye.
Quand à Marilyn Monroe, la sortie de sa biographie sobrement intitulée "Marilyn Monroe: La Biographie", restera une grande référence, de par les multiples recherches et accés à des archives: il remet en question les allégations portés par des témoignages suspects (Robert Slatzer, Jeanne Carmen) mais aussi en sapant les affirmations maintes fois répétées sur les supposés relations entre l'actrice et les frères Kennedy, tout en démontant les théories du complot et autre dissimulation qui entourent sa mort, affirmant que ceux qui délivrent de tels arguments ne sont motivés que par l'argent. Il participe aussi à de nombreux reportages et documentaires qui lui sont consacrés: The Mortal Goddess (1996); Marilyn à Manhattan (1998); un épisode de 2000 de Backstory d'AMC, revenant sur The Seven Year Itch; Love, Marilyn (2012); et Marilyn : her final secret (2022); il a même été invité par des fans (du club Marilyn Remembered) au service de commémoration célébrant chaque année à la date anniversaire de son décès (le 04 août) au cimetière du Westwood Memorial Park où elle repose.

As for Marilyn Monroe, the release of her biography soberly entitled "Marilyn Monroe: The Biography", will remain a great reference, through multiple searches and access to archives: he questions the allegations made by suspicious testimonies (Robert Slatzer, Jeanne Carmen) but also by undermining oft-repeated claims about the actress' alleged relationship with the Kennedy brothers, while dismantling conspiracy theories and other cover-ups surrounding her death, claiming that those who make such arguments are motivated only by money.
He also takes part in several reports and documentaries dedicated to her: The Mortal Goddess (1996); Marilyn in Manhattan (1998); a 2000 episode of AMC's Backstory, revisiting The Seven Year Itch; Love, Marilyn (2012); and Marilyn: her final secret (2022); he was even invited by the fans (of the Marilyn Remembered club) to the commemoration service celebrating each year on the anniversary date of her death (August 04) at the Westwood Memorial Park cemetery where she rests.

J'étais surprise de son âge, je pensais qu'il était plus jeune, l'ayant revu aussi dans le docu récent sur l'ADN. C'était un biographe sérieux et je pense un bourreau de travail et à n'en pas douter, un réel passionné de cinéma.

Je suis désolée d'apprendre son décès (enfin si je puis dire, je ne le connaissais pas personnellement). J'ai lu pas mal de biographies qu'il a écrites, celle de Marilyn bien sur, qui reste quand même à ce jour une des meilleures écrites sur elle. Il possédait beaucoup de documents sur elle, comme l'original d'un film rare de Norma Jeane (qu'on voit dans le docu sur l'enquête sur la comparaison de l'ADN pour établir l'identité de son père sorti l'été dernier) c'était la première fois que je le voyais d'aussi bonne qualité...J'ai lu la bio sur Hitchcock que j'ai adoré aussi. Celle sur Grace Kelly était moins passionnante et ne s'attardait que sur une courte période (quand elle voulait jouer dans Pas de printemps pour Marnie). C'est bien triste parce que je pense que l'on a perdu un grand biographe, à mon avis. Par contre, lol, tu as écrit qu'il a épousé son conjoint en 2033 (petite faute de frappe) !
