Le 6 novembre 1954, Marilyn Monroe est l'invitée d'honneur d'une soirée organisée par son agent Charles Feldman, au restaurant Romanoff's à Beverly Hills, afin de marquer la fin du tournage de The Seven Year Itch (Sept ans de réflexion). Pour représenter le film, l'acteur Tom Ewell et le réalisateur Billy Wilder sont présents. Et de nombreuses personnalités, stars du cinéma et producteurs influents, sont invités: Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, James Stewart, Doris Day, Susan Hayward, Gary Cooper, Clifton Web, Darryl Zanuck, Jack Warner, Sidney Skolsky, Groucho Marx, Loretta Young... mais surtout, l'idole de Marilyn, l'acteur Clark Gable. Il s'agit de leur première rencontre et Marilyn danse avec celui qu'elle imaginait enfant, être son père ! Elle lui demande même un autographe.

Radieuse dans une robe de velour rouge au décolleté prononcé, les ongles vernis de rouge et un fourreau blanc sur les épaules, Marilyn était bien la plus belle de la soirée.
Un carton publicitaire représentant Marilyn dans la robe blanche du film était disposé sur chacune des tables des invités. Une carte photographique de Marilyn circula de table en table et les invités la dédicacèrent. Marilyn garda cette carte toute sa vie. Elle fut vendue à la grande vente chez Chritie's en 1999.

Après un exil d'une année loin d'Hollywood, Marilyn s'est installée à New York et s'est engagée dans une bataille contre la 20th Century Fox, refusant les rôles que les studios lui proposent. Le 7 janvier 1955, Marilyn Monroe organise avec désormais son associé, le photographe Milton H. Greene, une conférence de presse où sont conviés près de 80 journalistes, ainsi que quelques amis. La réunion a lieu dans la maison de leur avocat Frank Delaney, sur la 64ème Avenue à New York.
Marilyn porte une robe de satin blanc et un manteau de fourrure d’hermine, des créations du couturier Norman Norell. Elle porte des boucles d'oreilles en diamants de chez Van Cleef & Arpels.
After a year of an exil far from Hollywood, Marilyn is settled in New York and is battling against the 20th Century Fox Studios, refusing the roles that the studios propose to her. In January 7, 1955, Marilyn Monroe organizes with his partner, photographer Milton H. Greene, a press conference where are invited nearly 80 journalists and some friends. The meeting takes place in the home of their lawyer Frank Delaney, on 64th Avenue in New York.
Marilyn wears a white satin dress and an ermine fur coat, creations of designer Norman Norell. She wears earrings in diamonds from Van Cleef & Arpels.
Elle annonce elle-même officiellement la création de la maison de production "Marilyn Monroe Productions" (MMP), dont elle en est la présidente (elle détient 51% des parts), et Milton Greene le vice-président (il en détient 49%). Frank Delaney répond à quelques questions des journalistes, déclarant notamment qu’elle n’est plus sous contrat avec la Fox et qu'elle envisage de travailler pour la télévision. De leur côté, la Fox tient aussi une conférence de presse pour affirmer que Marilyn est encore sous contrat pour quatre ans.
She announces officially the creation of the production company the "Marilyn Monroe Productions" (MMP) on which she is the president (she helds 51% of shares), and Milton Greene is the vice president (he owns 49%). Frank Delaney answers questions of journalists, by stating that she is no longer under contract with Fox and she plans to work for television. For their part, the 20th Century Fox also helds a press conference to say that Marilyn is still under contract for four years.

Marilyn ne s'est pas montrée en public depuis près d'un mois, ce qui attise la curiosité des journalistes mais aussi de ses fans, dont certains sont conviés. Parmi les convives célèbres, figure la journaliste à potins Elsa Maxwell, le dramaturge Sidney Kingsley, le compositeur Richard Rodgers (ami de Milton Greene), le photographe Sam Shaw, ainsi que Marlène Dietrich.
Marilyn was not shown in public apperance for almost a month, which arouses the curiosity of journalists but also her fans, some of whom are invited. From the famous guests, are included the gossip columnist Elsa Maxwell, playwright Sidney Kingsley, composer Richard Rodgers (friend of Milton Greene), the photographer Sam Shaw and Marlene Dietrich.

15/09/1954, New York - Marilyn en jupe par Philippe Halsman
C'est le 15 septembre 1954, le même jour où Marilyn Monroe a tourné la fameuse scène de sa robe blanche qui se soulève dans Sept ans de réflexion, qu'elle se rend dans la journée au studio de Philippe Halsman, sur la 67ème rue à New York. Il souhaite d'abord, lors d'une première séance, faire une étude des émotions. Marilyn a apporté un top noir, disant au photographe: "J'ai mis de côté ce haut spécialement pour toi. Personne ne m'a jamais photographié avec." Abasourdi, Halsman farfouine dans les vêtements de sa femme, pour prêter à Marilyn une jupe qui s'accorde avec son top.
Juste avant que Marilyn ne parte de son studio, Halsman va faire une autre séance: la première Jump sitting (< click sur le lien pour voir la séance de saut) de Marilyn avec Halsman. Séances pour le magazine Life.
It is in September 15, 1954, the same day that Marilyn Monroe shoots the famous scene of her lifting white dress in The Seven Year Itch, that she goes on the afternoon to Philippe Halsman's studio, on 67th Street in New York. He first wishes, for a first session, to do an emotion study. Marilyn brings a black top, telling to the photographer: "I have saved this blouse especially for you. No one has ever photographed me in it." Bewildered, Halsman rummages through his wife's clothes, to lend Marilyn a skirt that matches with her top.
Just before Marilyn leaves the studio, Halsman will do another sitting: Marilyn's first "Jump sitting" with Halsman. The sittings are for the Life magazine.

Cette séance informelle de Marilyn Monroe se déroule le 8 mars 1955 dans le studio de Milton Greene au 480 Lexington Avenue, 45th Street à New York; elle est photographiée par Sam Shaw - Les assistants de Milton Greene, Hal Berg et Marty Bauman, semblent être à l'origine de ces clichés où on découvre les coulisses des séances. Marilyn est photographiée dans différentes tenues: en chemisier vert et jupe noire, en robe noire et fourreau, en foulard satiné orange et jupe noire, puis recouverte d'un genre de drap blanc.
Pendant la séance, Sammy Davis Jr rend visite à Milton Greene -avec qui il est ami- et prend un moment pour discuter avec Marilyn.
This informal session of Marilyn Monroe takes place on March 8, 1955 in Milton Greene's studio at 480 Lexington Avenue, 45th Street in New York, she is photographed by Sam Shaw - Milton Greene's assistants, Hal Berg and Marty Bauman, seem to be at the origin of these pictures where we discover the backstage of the sessions. Marilyn is photographed in different outfits: in a green blouse and black skirt, in a black dress and fur, in an orange satin scarf and black skirt, and covered with a kind of white sheet.
During the session, Sammy Davis Jr visits Milton Greene -with whom he is a friend- and takes a moment to chat with Marilyn.

Séance photos improvisée de Marilyn Monroe prise le 8 mars 1955 dans le studio de Milton Greene au 480 Lexington Avenue, 45th Street à New York; Marilyn venait de sortir de la loge après s'être coiffée et maquillée, vêtue d'un peignoir blanc. En la découvrant ainsi, Milton Greene aurait dit "Photographions cela !". Bien que le crédit photographique de la séance soit désormais attribué à Milton Greene car la séance a eu lieu dans son studio, Marilyn est en fait photographiée par Sam Shaw - et il semblerait que ce soit Marty Bauman, assistant photographe de Greene, qui soit l'auteur des photos prises en coulisses.

Discovering her like this, Milton Greene would have said "Let's shoot this!". Although photo credit of the sitting is now attributed to Milton Greene as the shoot took place in his studio, Marilyn is actually photographed by Sam Shaw - and it seems that Marty Bauman, Greene's assistant photographer, is the one who photographs the backstage photos.
