Intox: Miss Long Beach n'est pas Marilyn

Cette photographie montrant une jeune femme en maillot de bain blanc, avec une écharpe "Miss Long Beach", en train de défiler, est parfois publié sur des sites et blogs consacrés à Marilyn Monroe sur internet. Or, il ne s'agit pas de Marilyn, car elle n'a jamais participé à un concours de "Miss" aux Etats-Unis.

Cette photographie a été publiée au sein d'un article du magazine américain Glance (un magazine destiné au public masculin spécialisé dans la publication de photographies de jeunes femmes, des pin up et starlettes, en tenue de lingerie ou en maillot bain) - édition de novembre 1949 - qui présentait les candidates au concours de "Miss California". Chaque comté de Los Angeles a élu au préalable une Miss, sélectionnée pour participer au concours "Miss California", pour pouvoir ensuite se présenter au concours national de "Miss America". Le magazine propose à ses lecteurs de participer à l'élection à travers la présentation des candidates. Mais cette sélection n'est que fictive, car l'article précise qu'au moment de sa publication, la Miss California a été élue à l'issue du concours organisé et publié dans son article.

Where does the photograph come from?
This photograph was published in an article in the American magazine Glance (a magazine intended for the male public specializing in the publication of photographs of young women, pin-ups and starlets, in lingerie or bathing suits) - in the November 1949 edition - which presented the candidates for the "Miss California" contest. Each county in Los Angeles has elected a Miss beforehand, selected to participate in the "Miss California" pageant, to then be able to appear in the national "Miss America" pageant. The magazine invites its readers to participate in the election through the presentation of the candidates. But this selection is only fictitious, because the article specifies that at the time of its publication, the Miss California was elected at the end of the competition organized and published in the content.

De plus, le concours de Miss California se déroule à Santa Cruz sur trois jours: les 16, 17 et 18 juin 1949; à cette période précise, Marilyn Monroe est alors en pleine promotion pour le film "La pêche au trésor" en voyageant dans plusieurs villes des Etats-Unis. Et le 16 juin 1949, Marilyn est à Rockford (dans l'Illinois).
Par ailleurs, en dehors des concours de Miss officielles, un autre concours "Miss Long Beach Pageant" sera organisé à partir de 1950.

If the hairstyle is similar (wavy hair, the lengths of which are brought to the right side - as Marilyn did her hair), the quality of the hair is different (the young Miss has thicker hair than Marilyn's which is more supple). The Miss's legs seem to be a little longer and slender than Marilyn's.
Moreover, the Miss California pageant is held in Santa Cruz over three days: June 16, 17, and 18, 1949; at this precise period, Marilyn Monroe is then in full promotion for the film "Love Happy" by traveling in several cities of the United States. And on June 16, 1949, Marilyn is in Rockford (in Illinois).
In addition, apart from the official Miss pageants, another "Miss Long Beach Pageant" contest will be organized from 1950.

Qui est cette "Miss Long Beach" ?
Une photographie panoramique montrant la petite trentaine de candidates est publiée en haut de l'article; il semble que la "Miss Long Beach" soit la 3ème jeune femme en partant de la gauche (bien qu'on ne puisse pas lire le nom du comté de L.A sur son écharpe, on peut reconnaître la coiffure similaire). Et il est alors flagrant qu'il ne s'agit pas de Marilyn Monroe.

La presse locale d'époque ( source: newspaper.com ) permet d'identifier la jeune femme élue "Miss Long Beach" en mai 1949: il s'agit d'Audrey Green, qui a alors 19 ans. Née le 16 novembre 1929, elle s'est mariée avec son petit-ami du lycée Ray Green Jr, avec qui elle a eu six enfants. Il semble qu'elle ait vécu une vie de femme au foyer, investie dans la vie locale de son quartier de Lakewood (dans plusieurs clubs d'activité aquatique et golf). Elle est décédée le 29 septembre 2022 à l'âge de 93 ans

Who is this "Miss Long Beach"?
A panoramic photograph showing the small thirty candidates is published at the top of the article; it seems that the "Miss Long Beach" is the 3rd young woman from the left (although you can't read the name of the county of L.A on her scarf, you can recognize the similar hairstyle). And it is then obvious that it is not about Marilyn Monroe.

The local press of the time (source: newspaper.com) identifies the young woman elected "Miss Long Beach" in May 1949: it is Audrey Green, who was then 19 years old. Born on November 16, 1929, she married her high school boyfriend Ray Green Jr, with whom she had six children. It seems that she lived the life of a housewife, invested in the local life of her neighborhood of Lakewood (in several aquatics and golf clubs). She died on September 29, 2022 at the age of 93.

Born on July 25, 1931, she had a short career as a model (she notably made the cover of Life magazine in August 1948); she married twice (with James William Codding in 1967 then with Edwin Mark Wilson in 1973); she died of a blood disease at the age of 43, on March 27, 1976.

Le concours de "Miss America" se déroule à Atlantic City le 10 septembre 1949. Jone Ann Pederson termine cinquième; c'est la brune Jacque Mercer ("Miss Arizona") qui est remporte le titre. Née le 07 janvier 1931, elle a alors 18 ans. Elle marque l'histoire des Miss: mariée à son amour de lycée Douglas Cook quand elle a été élue, elle divorce pendant son année de "mandat de Miss". Suite à ce scandale, une règle est promulguée qui oblige les candidates à Miss America de signer un engagement jurant qu'elles n'ont jamais été ni mariée ni enceinte.
En 1952, elle se remarrie mais divorce 11 jours après. Elle fait des études à l'Université où elle rencontre le footballeur Richard Curran (qui fonde une agence de publicité) avec qui elle se marrie en 1953; ils ont ensemble deux enfants et divorcent en 1974. Après avoir participé à une production théâtrale en 1953, elle travaille dans l'enseignement à Phoenix. Elle se marrie pour la 4ème et dernière fois en 1978 et décède d'une leucémie le 02 février 1982 à l'âge de 51 ans.

The "Miss America" pageant is held in Atlantic City on September 10, 1949. Jone Ann Pederson finishes fifth; it is the brunette Jacque Mercer ("Miss Arizona") who wins the title. Born on January 7, 1931, she was then 18 years old. She marks the history of the Misses: married to her high school sweetheart Douglas Cook when she was elected, she divorced during her year of her "Miss mandate". Following this scandal, a rule is enacted that requires Miss America contestants to sign a pledge vowing they have never been married or pregnant.
In 1952, she remarried but divorced 11 days later. She studied at the University where she met the footballer Richard Curran (who founded an advertising agency) with whom she married in 1953; they had two children together and divorced in 1974. After participating in a theater production in 1953, she worked in education in Phoenix. She married for the 4th and last time in 1978 and died of leukemia on February 2, 1982 at the age of 51.
