Vente aux enchères "Debbie Reynolds The Auction" le 18 juin 2011 par Profiles in History à Beverly Hills aux Etats-Unis.

L'actrice Debbie Reynolds n'est pas qu'une simple légende d'Hollywood mais elle est aussi une fervente collectionneuse de costumes de cinéma de l'âge d'or d'Hollywood. En septembre dernier, pour Bonhams, elle avait vendu quelques pièces de meubles, de chandeliers et d'art décoratifs. Mais aujourd'hui, elle met aux enchères plusieurs pièces magistrales de sa collection, comprenant des costumes de films et des accessoires, pour le compte de Profiles in History par une série d'enchères qui commencent en juin 2011. Debbie Reynolds collectionne depuis près de 50 ans et sa collection est considérée comme l'une des plus importantes de costumes d'Hollywood des studios MGM et de la Fox, comptabilisant près de 3500 costumes, 20 000 photographies, plusieurs milliers d'affiches de films, des esquisses faites par les costumiers, et d'autres accessoires qui ont servi dans les plus grands films.
Parmi sa collection, on recense des objets qui ont servi entre autres aux films Autant en emporte le vent (Gone With the Wind), Ben Hur, My Fair Lady, The Sound of Music et Casablanca. Les costumiers sont de grands noms tels que Travilla, Adrian, Travis Banton et Edith Head. Les costumes furent portés par Marilyn Monroe, Judy Garland, Charlton Heston, Greta Garbo, Elizabeth Taylor, Bette Davis, Gene Kelly, Richard Burton, Marlon Brando, Audrey Hepburn...

Le catalogue est vendu au prix de 39,50 $. Les lots concernant Marilyn se trouvent aux pages 149-150-151-152 (Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, How to marry a millionnaire, Monkey Business), pages 166-167-168-169-170 (River of no return, There's no business like show business), pages 189-190-191 (The seven year itch).

Monroe 36," additionally stamped MGM under bust lining. This was purchased in the 1970s from the prop resale house Remember When in Salt Lake City, Utah.

lot n°538: MARILYN MONROE SURVEILLANCE RECORDS
A twenty-one typed pages dated from October 20 to November 5, 1954, containing detailed reports on the movements of Marilyn Monroe and her friends and suspected love interests. The pages are prepared for "City Detective and Guard Service" on the subject of "Dimaggio****Monroe."
They provide detailed accounts of the movements of Monroe and Hal Schaefer, Monroe's vocal coach for Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (Fox, 1953). While Schaefer was watched closely, the detectives noted everyone with whom Monroe interacted.
The entry dated October 24, 1954, reads in part, "…7:50 P.M. The Subject [earlier identified as Marilyn Monroe] arrived at 1312 Harper, parked and entered same. There was another auto parked in the drive-way, a 1950 Cadillac Conv. Lic. # 5N69948 Calif., registered to Jane Wyman--360 N. Camden Dr., Bev. Hills. Someone was playing the piano in the house. The husband of Jane Wyman is John Karger (he plays the piano), and it was our oppinnion [sic.] that Karger was in the house."
Joe Dimaggio hired private detectives to track Monroe's movements, as he feared she was being unfaithful. The detectives' observations state that one of the "operators" called DiMaggio and they noted his car in front of the building where the famous "wrong door raid" took place on the night of November 5, 1954.

Du 15 mai au 1er juin 2009, une exposition d'objets, vêtements, lettres, ayant appartenus à Marilyn Monroe peuvent être admirés au Newbridge Silverware Museum of Style de Kildare, en Irlande; dont la collection fera l'objet d'une vente aux enchères à Las Vegas les 26 et 27 juin 2009.

Plus de 150 objets de la vie privée de Marilyn y sont présentés. Cette exposition comprend des effets trouvés dans la chambre de la star le matin de sa mort. Parmi ces objets le peignoir blanc de Marilyn, peut être le dernier vêtement qu'elle ait porté. On y trouve aussi le pull orange Pucci et une tenue qu'elle porta dans Le Prince et la Danseuse. Vêtements, objets, peintures et photographies de la maison de Marilyn à Los Angeles sont présentés. L'exposition est gratuite et ouverte jusqu'au 1er juin -date qui aurait marqué le 83ème anniversaire de l'actrice.
Certains objets appartiennent à Peter Leonardi, un temps secrétaire personnel de Monroe et d'autres ont été mis en vente aux enchères par Christie's ou Julien's par la succession Monroe. C'est la première fois qu'autant d'objets sont présentés au public. Les visiteurs peuvent voir des photos de la cuisine de Marilyn Monroe avec les casseroles en cuivre;

Exposition Marilyn Monroe inédite
à l'île de Jersey

Du 25 mars au 31 décembre 2009, une exposition unique : la plus grande collection de costumes originaux de Marilyn Monroe jamais constituée à ce jour sera exposée pour la première fois, au Musée de Jersey à Saint-Hélier, la capitale de l’île de Jersey.

Au total, dix-neuf pièces, toutes portées par Marilyn, étiquetées du label du studio, sont la propriété de David Gainsborogh-Roberts, collectionneur invétéré de Jersey à qui il a souhaité réserver la primeur. Des tenues (costumes, toges, maillots de bain), bijoux et autres accessoires émouvants issus de films comme The Fireball, Niagara, Les Hommes préfèrent les Blondes, Comment épouser un millionnaire, La Joyeuse parade, Sept ans de réflexion, Bus Stop, Le Prince et la danseuse, Certains l’aiment chaud, ou encore The Misfits, pour découvrir Marilyn sous un autre jour, avec beaucoup de nostalgie.
Il sera aussi exposé, la plupart pour la première fois, des affaires personnelles tels que des dessins, vêtements, lettres, bijoux et prix (awards) ayant appartenus à l'icône de cinéma Marilyn Monroe.

L’exposition présente accessoires et robes portés dans les films suivants :

- Niagara (1952), son premier gros succès dans lequel tous ses costumes ont été dessinés dans le but d’accentuer ses courbes. Robe rose et négligé en soie noire.
- Les Hommes préfèrent les Blondes (1953) Justaucorps en soie noire et chapeau assorti.
- Comment Epouser un Millionnaire (1953) Une paire de faux diamants et de boucles d’oreilles.
- La Joyeuse Parade (1954) Une robe très élaborée et très sexy, garnie d’un panneau pour recouvrir la jambe de Marilyn pour les scènes tournées à destination des pays où la nudité est interdite. Un costume de bain des années 1950s et un bonnet de bain en forme de fleur.
- Sept ans de réflexion (1955) Une paire de longs gants noirs.
- Bus Stop (1956) Costume en satin vert et une blouse à lacets noire.
- Le Prince et la Danseuse (1957) Fourrure et robe de soirée en soie blanche.
- Certains l’aiment chaud (1959) Une robe de cocktail noire dessinée par Orry-Kelly, célèbre styliste qui a travaillé pour les plus grand studios. Sa robe était si serrée qu’elle était obligée de se faire soulever pour s’asseoir sur le piano.
- Le Milliardaire (1960) Une blouse en soie rose.
- Les Désaxés (1961) Le bikini blanc porté par Marilyn dans le film.
- Un costume porté pour Life magazine en 1958 pour une photo réalisée par Richard Avedon.
- La collection compte également une robe de soirée personnelle dessinée par Lanvin et Castillo.

Aucune indication sur le styliste ayant créé les costumes pour le film ne figure au générique. Le rôle de Marilyn est celui d'une serveuse, travallant au bar Gopher Hole, une sorte de "diner" (à prononcer avec l'accent anglais -dineure-), des brasseries très populaires aux Etats-Unis où se retrouve la jeunesse américaine dans les années 1950s et 1960s.
Les quatre scènes où apparaît Marilyn dans le film se situent dans ce bar. Et les serveuses portent toutes la même tenue: une longue jupe droite légèrement évasée qui retombe jusqu'aux genoux, un chemisier bicolore à boutons aux manches courtes, une sorte de petit chapeau coiffe bicolore sur la tête, un petit tablier noué autour de la taille, et des sandales blanches plates et ouvertes au bout des pieds.

No indication of the stylist who created the costumes for the film appears in the credits. Marilyn's role is that of a waitress, working at the Gopher Hole bar, a kind of "diner", very popular brasseries in the United States where American youth meet in the 1950s and 1960s.
The four scenes where Marilyn appears in the film take place in this bar. And the waitresses all wear the same outfit: a long straight slightly flared skirt that falls to the knees, a two-tone buttoned blouse with short sleeves, a kind of small two-tone cap hat on the head, a small apron tied around the waist, and white sandals with flat feet and open toes.

C'est à la moitié du XIXème siècle que les serveuses ont fait leur apparition aux Etats-Unis dans les établissements de music-hall et saloons, vêtues de jupons courts pour servir la clientèle masculine et ainsi les pousser à la consommation. Avec l'interdiction de vente d'alcool et la prohibition qui s'ensuit, les serveuses ont disparu des music-hall, mais les cafés et brasseries reprennent l'idée à la fin du XIXème siècle en employant des serveuses vêtues de grandes culottes bouffantes laissant entrevoir le bas des jambes. L'émergence des drive-in et diners (ces brasseries/restaurants où l'on commande des burgers avec du coca) dans les années 1930s donnent naissance aux serveuses vêtues d'uniformes, certaines en tenue de majorette ou de cow-girl, aux jupes courtes ou mini short. L'uniforme permet de standardiser la profession, de la faire reconnaître comme un vrai métier identifiable. 

It was in the middle of the 19th Century that waitresses appeared in the United States in music halls and saloons, dressed in short petticoats to serve male customers and thus encourage them to drink. With the ban on the sale of alcohol and the ensuing prohibition, waitresses disappeared from music halls, but cafes and brasseries took up the idea at the end of the 19th Century by employing waitresses dressed in big bloomers leaving see the lower legs. The emergence of drive-ins and diners (those brasseries/restaurants where you order burgers with coke) in the 1930s gave rise to waitresses dressed in uniforms, some in cheerleader or cowgirl outfits, to short skirts or mini shorts. The uniform makes it possible to standardize the profession, to have it recognized as a real identifiable profession.

Lot n°80: costume de Don't Bother to Knock
Undoubtedly the Holy Grail of any serious costume collection, presented here is a simple yet elegant green and black day dress worn by none other than Marilyn Monroe in her starring role as Nell Forbes in the 1952 drama Don't Bother to Knock. An important milestone in Monroe's career, Don't Bother to Knock was Monroe's first starring role in which she was able to show her versatility as a dramatic actress. An official wardrobe label on the inside lining of the dress reads: "1-27-1-7612 Marilyn Monroe A-66-05 #2." In fine overall condition, although numerous alterations have been made, including button removal, plaquet removal, and a replacement of the linen and lace collar. This costume is from the prestigious collection of Debbie Reynolds and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by Debbie Reynolds and Darren Julien of Julien Entertainment. Proceeds from this sale go to benefit The Debbie Reynolds Hollywood Motion Picture Museum.
About The Film: One of Marilyn Monroe's emerging films, "Don't Bother to Knock" co-stars Richard Widmark in a story about a deranged girl who gets a baby-sitting job in a hotel and terrifies all concerned by threaten to kill her charge. Twentieth Century Fox released this picture in 1952.

Lot n°145: costume de Marilyn Monroe pour Gentlemen Prefer Blondes
From one of the greatest actresses of all time in what was undoubtedly one of her finest performances, we are proud to present in this special lot a complete showgirls outfit--consisting of a black sequin leotard and matching Dutch hat--worn by Marilyn Monroe in her starring role as Lorelei Lee in the 1953 Howard Hawks classic Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Worn prominently by Monroe in the film, the leotard features a black sequin pattern across the entire bodice with an accent of rhinestones along the leg openings and a large floral pattern along the bustline. The matching stylized Dutch girl hat features black sequins across the crown and flaps and a green velvet lining with in the inside. Matching sewn-in wardrobe labels on the inside of the leotard and inside lining of the hat read, "1-25-1-4288, Marilyn Monroe, A698-69." This outfit was created by renowned costume designer William Travilla, who designed numerous costumes for Monroe throughout her career, including outfits for the film Bus Stop and the memorable white subway dress for the 1955 film The Seven Year Itch. Well preserved, this outfit stands in impeccable condition. A marquee piece from one of the sexiest women of the silver screen, presented here is a complete showgirls outfit--consisting of a black sequin leotard and matching Dutch hat--worn by Jane Russell in her starring role as Dorothy Shaw opposite Marilyn Monroe in the 1953 Howard Hawks classic Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Worn prominently by Russell in the film, the leotard features a black sequin pattern across the entire bodice with an accent of rhinestones along the leg openings. The matching stylized Dutch girl hat features black sequins across the crown and flaps and a green velvet lining with in the inside. Matching sewn-in wardrobe labels on the inside of the leotard and inside lining of the hat read, "1-25-1-4287, Jane Russell, A698-69." This outfit was created by renowned costume designer William Travilla, who created numerous costume masterpieces including the memorable white subway dress worn by Marilyn Monroe in The Seven Year Itch. Some alterations have been made, including the removal of flowers along the bustline and removal of a tie string along the front of the bodice, otherwise this outfit stands in overall superb condition. An attractive 2-piece outfit--consisting of a dress and matching jacket--worn by Marilyn Monroe in her starring role as Lorelei Lee opposite Jane Russell in the 1953 classic Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Created by costume designer Travilla, this grey ensemble features a matching grey fabricated pattern across the entire length of the dress and matching jacket. Both dress and jacket also feature a lovely satin trim accent that is highlighted by 2 grey satin trains that flow from the waist. A handwritten wardrobe label on the inside lining of the dress reads, "1-27-3-7914 M. Monroe A698-53." Well preserved, this true Hollywood artifact stands in excellent condition. A "must have" for any serious collector of Marilyn Monroe memorabilia, offered here is a peach satin leotard with fishnet overlay and a pair of peach satin gloves with rhinestones, worn by none other than the legendary Marilyn Monroe herself as Lorelei Lee in the 1953 classic Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Created by famed costume designer Travilla, outfits such as this leotard created a great controversy at the time of the film's release since it was considered too revealing for major stars as Monroe to wear. Ultimately, it was Monroe's ability and willingness to wear such outfits that made her perhaps the greatest sex symbol in the history of motion pictures! An official 20th Century Fox sewn-in wardrobe label on the inside lining of the leotard reads, "20th Century Fox, Marilyn Monroe." NOTE: The leotard and gloves were worn in the film, however, they are not a matching set and are seen separately. Originally acquired from Sotheby's and accompanied by an original Sotheby's sticker. A marquee addition to any serious costume collection, presented here is a late-1800's styled jacket and dress worn by the legendary Marilyn Monroe, performing in one of her early roles as "Clara" in the 1950 film A Ticket to Tomahawk. In superb condition, this yellow jacket and dress combination, designed true to it's period (circa 1870's) features green velvet and braid trim across both pieces with a pleated tier to the skirt. 20th Century Fox costume labeling on the inside of the jacket states "Marilyn Monroe" and on the inside of the dress, "1-25-1-3843, A-581-14 #2, Marilyn Monroe." From condition to collectability, it doesn't get any better! About The Film: In 1950, Marilyn Monroe had a small part in "A Ticket to Tomahawk. Set in 1876, Dawson wants to prevent a train from getting to Tomahawk CO on time, to keep it from competing with his stage coach line. Kit, who must get the train to its goal, forces Johnny aboard as the needed passenger. Madame Adelaide's showgirls (including Marilyn as Clara) ride along and, en route to Tomahawk, join Johnny in "Oh, What a Forward Young Man You Are."
