Après avoir rencontré Peggy (Marilyn Monroe) et la mère de celle-ci Mae Martin (Adele Jergens), Adele Carroll (Nana Bryant) organise une fête pour annoncer les fiançailles de son fils Randy Carroll (Rand Brooks) avec Peggy. Elle y a invité tous ses amis de la bonne société, ainsi que Billy MacKay (Eddie Garr), un comique burlesque à la retraite qui aime Mae depuis des années.
Pendant la fête, le trio de musiciens (The Bobby True Trio qui interprète "Ubangi Love Song") qu'Adele a embauché pour divertir les convives, reconnaît Peggy et lui demande de chanter, l'interpellant par "Peggy, la reine du burlesque" devant tous les invités.

After meeting Peggy (Marilyn Monroe) and her mother Mae Martin (Adele Jergens), Adele Carroll (Nana Bryant) throws a party to announce her son Randy Carroll's (Rand Brooks) engagement to Peggy. She has invited all her friends from high society there, as well as Billy MacKay (Eddie Garr), a retired burlesque comedian who has loved Mae for years.
During the party, the trio of musicians (The Bobby True Trio who interpret "Ubangi Love Song") that Adele has hired to entertain the assembly, recognizes Peggy and asks her to sing, calling out "Peggy, the Queen of Burlesque" in front of all the guests.

Les invités sont scandalisés et se sentant snobés, Peggy et Mae fuient et montent à l'étage dans la chambre où elles ont été reçues, préparant leurs valises pour partir.

The guests are outraged and feeling snubbed, Peggy and Mae flee and go upstairs to the room where they were received, packing their suitcases to leave.
Adele joins them to chat and asks them not to run away, as it will only make the situation worse.
Mae, Peggy and Randy return to the party.

Adele et Billy descendent à leur tour les escaliers. C'est alors qu'Adele se place avec le trio de musiciens et se met à chanter une chanson avec la complicité de Billy qui l'accompagne au piano (le titre de la chanson est "You're Never Too Old").
A la fin de sa prestation, elle fait croire à l'assemblée qu'elle aussi a été chanteuse de revue dans le passé. Parmi ses amies, certaines sont amusées, d'autres choquées. Billy raconte secrètement à Mae qu'Adele a inventé cette histoire pour aider Randy et Peggy. 
Enfin, Adele se retrouve au centre de deux couples qui s'embrassent, présageant un futur double mariage: celui de Randy et Peggy et celui de Billy et Mae.

Adele and Billy go down the stairs in turn. It is then that Adele places herself with the trio of musicians and begins to sing a song with the complicity of Billy who accompanies her on the piano (the title of the song is "You're Never Too Old").
At the end of her performance, she makes believe to the assembly that she too has been a chorus girl in the past. Among her friends, some are amused, others shocked. Billy secretly tells Mae that Adele made up that lie to help Randy and Peggy.
Finally, Adele finds herself in the center of two kissing couples, presaging a future double marriage: that of Randy and Peggy and that of Billy and Mae.

  Marilyn Monroe, formerly with Twentieth Century-Fox, was sweet enough to tell me I am responsible for the best break she has had - the lead in Ladies of the Chorus at Columbia. Well, I have news for her. I'm sure it was her blond beauty and talent that turned the trick and not the few plugs I've given her in the column. She is such a pretty girl. The background is the burlesque stage around the turn of the century and I hear the costumes are an eyefull.

Burlesque Queen In Love
"Ladies of the Chorus" follows the well-known story line of the show girl who falls in love with a member of a wealthy society family. The girl, played by Marilyn Monroe, is in the same burlesque chorus as her mother, Adele Jergens, who was once the toast of the burlesque route, but now spends most of her time keeping the wolves away from her daughter.
When the star of the quits, Marilyn gets her chance. She takes over the star's spot and soon because queen of burlesque herself. Rand Brooks plays the young man who falls in love with her and asks her to marry him. But Miss Jergens is skeptical because she too married a rich man and their marriage failed when his family and friends refused to accept her.
Things happen just as mother feared, byt everything works out when the boy's mother pretends to have been a lady of the chorus herself, just to show everyone that a girl can make her living in burlesque and still be acceptable. One of the bright spots is Miss Monroe's singing. She is pretty, and with her pleasing voice and style, she shows promise.
The musical numbers are on an insignig=ficant scale, and in those which are supposed to be burlesque, occasionally lacking in taste. Unrelieved by any appreciable amount of humor, the plot is unbelievable, particularly the idea of so oversolicitous a mother dancing in a chorus with her daughter.
Reviewed at the Brooklyn Fox Theatre, where the audience was apathetic. Reviewer's Rating: Fair. - TIBOR KEREKES.

Reine du burlesque amoureuse
"Ladies of the Chorus" suit l'histoire bien connue d'une danseuse de revue qui tombe amoureuse d'un membre d'une famille de la haute société. La fille, jouée par Marilyn Monroe, est dans la même troupe burlesque que sa mère, Adele Jergens, qui était autrefois une figure du burlesque, mais qui passe désormais le plus clair de son temps à éloigner les loups de sa fille.
Lorsque la star est virée, Marilyn obtient sa chance. Elle prend la place de la star et bientôt de reine du burlesque elle-même. Rand Brooks joue le jeune homme qui tombe amoureux d'elle et lui demande de l'épouser. Mais Miss Jergens est sceptique car elle aussi a épousé un homme riche et leur mariage a échoué lorsque sa famille et ses amis ont refusé de l'accepter.
Les choses se passent comme la mère le craignait, mais tout s'arrange quand la mère du garçon se fait passer pour une meneuse de revue elle-même, histoire de montrer à tout le monde qu'une fille peut gagner sa vie dans le burlesque tout en restant acceptable. L'un des moments le plus brillant est celui où Miss Monroe chante. Elle est jolie, et sa voix et son style agréables constituent pour elle de belles promesses d'avenir.
Les numéros musicaux sont d'une ampleur insignifiante, et dans ceux qui se veulent burlesques, ils manquent parfois de goût. Non soulagée par une quantité appréciable d'humour, l'intrigue n'est pas crédible, en particulier l'idée d'une mère si trop sollicitée qui danse dans la même revue que sa fille.

STORY: Burlesque chorus girl Marilyn Monroe becomes a star when Marjorie Hoshelle, featured dancer, walks out after a fight with Monroe's mother, Adele Jergens, also in the chorus. Jergens fights the wolves off Monroe's trail, but the latter falls in love with Randy Brooks. Jergens recalls her own marriage failure with a man of society, and fears that Brooks' mother and friends won't accept a burlesque queen. Brooks promises to inform his mother of Monroe's job, and invites them to stay at his mother's house. Brooks doesn't keep his promise, but his mother, Nana Bryant, accepts Monroe and Jergens, and arranges an engagement party. The orchestra leader recognizes Monroe, and reveals her burlesque fame, shocking the society guests. Monroe and Jergens retire to their room, but are persuaded to return by Bryant and Brooks. Bryant then sings a song she is reminded of by Eddie Garr, an old burlesque partner of Jergens and an "uncle" who accompanies her. She informs the audience she, too, was a professional performer, which is a lie, but thos present then accept Monroe. Bryant then suggests a double wedding, and Jergens and Garr agree.
X-RAY: A liberal sprinkling of songs, some comedy, and pretty girls make this entertaining for the lower half despite the thin story line. The screen play is by Harry Sauber and Joseph Carole, and the songs include "Ladies of the Chorus," "Crazy For You," "Every Baby Needs A Da-Da-Daddy," "Anyone Can See," "You're Never Too Old," and "Ubangi Love Song."

Peggy, is attracted to the girl and arranges an engagement party. Peggy is recognised by the orchestra leader and some of the guests are shocked. But Mrs. Carroll, after doing a song routine herself, tells her guests she herself had been on the stage prior to her marriage,
Only 'Uncle Billy' Mack (Eddie Garr), a former burlesque comic in love with May for a long time, knows Mrs. Carroll is not telling the truth. A double wedding is soon on the offing — Peggy and Randy, May and 'Uncle Billy.' The film ('Ladies of the Chorus') will be shown to-morrow and Saturday nights.

La jolie Peggy Martin (Marilyn Monroe) sort du lot parmi les meneuses de revue pour devenir une star du burlesque. Bien que sa mère, May (Adele Jergens), ancienne star du burlesque elle-même et maintenant danseuse dans la troupe, regarde Peggy d'assez près, la jeune fille rencontre et tombe amoureuse avec un mondain nommé Randy Carroll (Rand Brooks) qui souhaite l'épouser. This chorus-girl musical is worth watching for one reason only; in her second film appearance Monroe (in a sizable part) is cast as a leggy burlesque showgirl who shares the stage with her mom (Jergens) and another half dozen or so beauties. Monroe falls in love with wealthy socialite Brooks, a romance met with disapproval by Jergens. It turns out that mother got herself into the same situation years before and is just watching out for little Marilyn. The picture ends with a double wedding--Monroe to Brooks and Jergens to longtime love Carr. Monroe delivered a pair of tunes, "Every Baby Needs a Da Da Daddy" and "Anyone Can Tell I Love You" (Allan Roberts, Lester Lee). Roberts and Lee also contributed "Crazy for You," "You're Never Too Old," and the title tune. This picture still wasn't enough to convince the studio executives that Marilyn was hot property. She was dropped by Columbia after this role and it was still a few years before she became a living legend.

Cette comédie musicale de danseuses de revue vaut la peine d'être regardée pour une seule raison; dans sa deuxième apparition au cinéma, Monroe (dans un rôle important) interpréte une showgirl burlesque aux longues jambes qui partage la scène avec sa mère (Jergens) et une autre demi-douzaine de beautés. Monroe tombe amoureuse du riche mondain Brooks, une romance désapprouvée par Jergens. Il s'avère que la mère s'est retrouvée dans la même situation des années auparavant et qu'elle veille juste sur la petite Marilyn. Le film se termine par un double mariage - Monroe avec Brooks et Jergens avec son amour de longue date Carr. Monroe délivre ici plusieurs titres, "Every Baby Needs a Da Da Daddy" et "Anyone Can Tell I Love You" ( Allan Roberts , Lester Lee ). Roberts et Lee ont également contribué à "Crazy for You", "You're Never Too Old" et à la chanson titre. Ce film n'était toujours pas suffisant pour convaincre les dirigeants du studio que Marilyn était un bien en vogue. Elle a été abandonnée par la Columbia après ce rôle et il lui a fallu encore quelques années avant qu'elle ne devienne une légende vivante.

Cette longue robe de mousseline noire de soirée au buste seyant, aux manches et à la poitrine transparentes, à la taille haute, et à la jupe pailletée et ouverte jusqu'en haut des jambes est une création de Jean-Louis Berthault, surnommé Jean Louis.
Ce n'est pas une tenue de la garde robe personnelle de Marilyn; la robe appartient au département costume des studios de la Columbia.

This long black muslin evening dress with a flattering bust, transparent sleeves and chest, high waist, and sequined skirt open to the top of the legs is a creation of Jean-Louis Berthault, nicknamed Jean Louis.
It's not an outfit from Marilyn's personal wardrobe; the dress belongs to the costume department of Columbia studios.

Elle porte cette robe sexy avec des bas résilles noirs, qui ajoutent un effet de sensualité burlesque.
Tous les costumes des scènes de danse du film sont des créations de Jean Louis. Cependant, il ne les a pas créé pour Marilyn -ni pour le film- mais les vêtements ont été empruntés dans le département costumes de la Columbia, pour qui Jean Louis travaillait.

Marilyn Monroe wears the dress in the Columbia film Ladies of the Chorus, shot in May/June 1948, in a singing and dancing scene to the song "Every Baby Needs a Da-Da -Daddy". She wears this sexy dress with black fishnet stockings, which add a burlesque sensuality effect.
All the costumes for the dance scenes in the film are creations by Jean Louis. However, he did not create them for Marilyn -nor for the film- but the clothes were borrowed from the costume department of Columbia, for which Jean Louis worked.

Il est étonnant de découvrir qu'un mois avant de tourner le film pour la Columbia, Marilyn avait emprunté la robe aux studios pour une représentation théâtrale du 16 au 19 mars 1948 pour le compte de leur concurrent - la Twentieth Century Fox-  dans un showcase au "Fox Studio Club Little Theater".

It is surprising to discover that a month before shooting the film for Columbia, Marilyn had borrowed the dress from the studios for a theatrical performance from March 16 to 19 in 1948 for their competitor - Twentieth Century Fox - in a showcase at the Fox Studio Club Little Theater.
