A l'appartement des Martin, Mae Martin (Adele Jergens) et sa fille Peggy Martin (Marilyn Monroe) rentrent chez elle. Mae propose de faire du café mais Peggy n'en veut pas. Peggy s'asseoit dans le fauteuil et Mae remarque que quelque chose ne va pas. Une mise au point a alors lieu: Peggy reproche à sa mère de ne pas pouvoir sortir avec d'autres personnes. Mae lui répond qu'il est inutile d'aller à un rendez-vous avec un inconnu qui sera probablement plus âgé ou même marié avec des enfants. Peggy se fâche; elle rétorque à sa mère que celle-ci est constamment dans le jugement sans connaître les gens, qu'elle doit toujours demander la permission à sa mère pour sortir, que sa mère la traite comme une enfant. Une fois avoir dit à sa mère ce qu'elle pensait, Peggy part se coucher. Mae reste sans voix, surprise d'avoir entendu ces reproches.

At the Martins' apartment, Mae Martin (Adele Jergens) and her daughter Peggy Martin (Marilyn Monroe) go back home. Mae offers to make coffee but Peggy doesn't want it. Peggy sits in the chair and Mae notices something is wrong. A clarification then takes place: Peggy criticizes her mother for not being able to go out with other people. Mae replies that there is no point in going on a date with a stranger who will probably be older or even married with children. Peggy gets angry; she retorts to her mother that she is constantly in judgment without knowing people, that she must always ask her mother's permission to go out, that her mother treats her like a child. After telling her mother what she was thinking, Peggy goes to bed. Mae is speechless, surprised to have heard these reproaches.

Scène 03 - Captures

Les filles de la revue sont dans la grande loge partagée en commun, assises les unes à côté des autres, en train de finir de se préparer de leur mise en beauté: coiffure et maquillage. Mae Martin (Adele Jergens) se remet du rouge à lèvres pendant que sa fille Peggy Martin (Marilyn Monroe), assise à côté d'elle, se repoudre le décolleté. Comme elles se sont disputées la veille, elles s'observent du coin de l'oeil, sans se regarder ni décrocher un sourire. On entend le manager Joe (Frank J Scannell) frapper à la porte de la loge pour crier aux filles qu'il leur reste 15 minutes avant de monter sur scène. C'est alors que Bubbles LaRue (Marjorie Hoshelle), qui est la "reine du burlesque" fait une entrée royale dans la loge, se dirigeant directement vers Peggy, pour lui montrer son bracelet qui brille de mille feu. Elle dit à Peggy que si elle le voulait, elle pourrait aussi en avoir un si elle acceptait les invitations envoyées par certains hommes du public. Mae se tourne vers Bubbles pour lui dire de laisser Peggy tranquille, ce qui agace Peggy qui rétorque à sa mère qu'elle peut très bien répondre elle-même. Bubbles se moque alors ouvertement de Peggy, et Mae dit à Bubble de retourner dans sa loge. Le ton monte et Bubbles se montre odieuse envers Mae, tant en parole qu'en acte, puisqu'elle la pousse violemment et Mae tombe, retenue par les autres filles assises à côté d'elle. Alors Peggy se lève et se jette sur Bubbles, qui retombe sur le sofa placé derrière. Toutes les filles se rapprochent et soutiennent Peggy, qui moleste Bubbles avec son chapeau de plumes ! Averti par les cris des filles, Joe arrive pour séparer les deux femmes. D'un ton autoritaire, Joe ordonne aux filles de monter sur scène car le show va commencer. Elles quittent toute la loge, replacant rapidement leur cheveux; Peggy replace bien les cheveux de sa mère Mae et elles se prennent dans les bras.

The girls of the show are in the large lodge shared in common, seated next to each other, finishing their preparations for their beauty treatment: hair and make-up. Mae Martin (Adele Jergens) brushes off lipstick while her daughter Peggy Martin (Marilyn Monroe), seated next to her, powders her cleavage. As they argued the day before, they watch each other out of the corner of their eyes, without looking at each other or smiling. Manager Joe (Frank J Scannell) is heard knocking on the dressing room door to shout to the girls that they have 15 minutes left before going on stage. That's when Bubbles LaRue (Marjorie Hoshelle), who is the "queen of burlesque" makes a royal entrance into the dressing room, heading straight for Peggy, to show her her bracelet which shines with a thousand fires. She tells Peggy that if she wanted to, she could have one too if she accepted the invitations sent out by some of the men in the audience. Mae turns to Bubbles to tell her to leave Peggy alone, which annoys Peggy who retorts to her mother that she can very well answer herself. Bubbles then openly mocks Peggy, and Mae tells Bubble to go back to her dressing room. The tone rises and Bubbles is shown to be obnoxious towards Mae, both in word and deed, as she violently pushes her and Mae falls, restrained by the other girls sitting next to her. Then Peggy gets up and throws herself on Bubbles, who falls back on the sofa placed behind. All the girls come together and support Peggy, who molests Bubbles with her feather hat! Warned by the screams of the girls, Joe arrives to separate the two women. In an authoritative tone, Joe orders the girls to go on stage because the show is about to begin. They all leave the dressing room, quickly putting their hair back; Peggy tucks her mother Mae's hair right in and they hug each other.

 Joe se tourne vers Bubbles pour lui dire d'aller enfiler son costume. Elle ne l'écoute pas, le traitant même de simple larbin. Mais Joe lui rappelle les règles: bien qu'elle soit la vedette du show, elle doit se produire et il lui ordonne d'aller se préparer. Bubbles lui rétorque alors qu'elle démissionne sur le champ et quitte la pièce. Joe la regarde perplexe, mais il n'est pas inquiet car il semble qu'il ait une idée en tête de par le sourire qu'il esquisse.

Joe turns towards Bubbles to tell to go put on her costume. She doesn't listen to him, even calling him a simple stooge. But Joe reminds her of the rules: although she is the star of the show, she must perform and he orders her to go and get ready. Bubbles retorts as she quits right now and leaves the room. Joe looks at her puzzled, but he is not worried because he seems to have an idea in his head by the smile he sketches.

Les filles sortent de scène et rejoignent les coulisses. Mae semble préoccupée. Joe l'interpelle pour discuter: d'emblée, Mae s'excuse. Joe lui explique que Bubbles est partie et qu'il a besoin d'une autre tête d'affiche et ce sera Mae. Elle est surprise et ne semble pas emballée par cette idée, mais Joe l'exige car "le spectacle doit continuer". Mae rejoint la grande loge commune des filles.

The girls leave the stage and go backstage. Mae looks concerned. Joe calls out to discuss: straight away, Mae apologizes. Joe explains to her that Bubbles is gone and he needs another headliner for the show and that will be Mae. She's surprised and doesn't seem too keen on the idea, but Joe demands it because "the show must go on". Mae joins the girls' dressing-room.

Mae entre dans la loge où les filles sont toutes assises à se recoiffer. Elle attrape Peggy par le bras et lui demande de la suivre, lui expliquant que Bubbles est partie et qu'il y a donc une opportunité à saisir.

Mae walks into the dressing room where the girls are all sitting combing their hair. She grabs Peggy by the arm and asks her to follow her, explaining to her that Bubbles is gone and therefore there is an opportunity to be seized.

  Sur scène, Peggy Martin (Marilyn Monroe) danse et chante "Anyone Can See I Love You" (pouvant se traduire par "Tout le monde peut voir que je t'aime"). Dans la salle, deux jeunes hommes [Peter Winthrop (Robert Clarke) et son pote (Myron Healey)] la regardent, semblant subjugués avec le sourire aux lèvres. Pendant sa prestation, Peggy tourne la tête vers les coulisses pour faire un clin d'oeil à sa mère Mae Martin (Adele Jergens), qui envoie un baiser par la main. Mae est assise avec d'autres filles de la revue (dont Carole Gallagher) dans les coulisses et elles obervent toutes avec attention la prestation de Peggy, en faisant des commentaires élogieux. Même le manager Joe (Frank J Scannell) fait part de sa satisfaction. La prestation scénique de Peggy se termine par de vifs applaudissements dans la salle et le regard empli de fierté de sa mère.

On stage, Peggy Martin (Marilyn Monroe) dances and sings "Anyone Can See I Love You". In the audience, two young men [Peter Winthrop (Robert Clarke) and his friend (Myron Healey)] look at her, seeming captivated with smiles on their faces. During her performance, Peggy turns her head backstage to wink at her mother Mae Martin (Adele Jergens), who blows a kiss by the hand. Mae sits with other girls from the revue (including Carole Gallagher) backstage and they all watch Peggy's performance intently, making glowing comments. Even manager Joe (Frank J Scannell) expresses his satisfaction. Peggy's stage performance ends with loud applause by the audience and her mother's look of pride.

Randy Carroll (Rand Brooks) est en voiture avec son copain (Myron Healey) et son cousin Peter Winthrop (Robert Clarke) qui est au volant. Le copain demande à Pete où il les emmène, il lui répond qu'ils vont voir "Peggy Martin". Randy ne la connait pas, il n'a pas encore vu la revue où elle se produit. Son copain lui dit qu'elle est "la nouvelle chérie du burlesque".

Randy Carroll (Rand Brooks) is in the car with his friend (Myron Healey) and his cousin Peter Winthrop (Robert Clarke) who is driving. The buddy asks Pete where he is taking them, he replies they go to see "Peggy Martin". Randy doesn't know her, he hasn't seen the show where she is performing yet. Her friend tells him she's "the new darling of burlesque".

Sur scène, vêtue d'une longue robe noire à sequins, Peggy Martin (Marilyn Monroe) danse et chante "Every Baby Needs a Da-da-daddy" (pouvant se traduire par "Chaque bébé a besoin d'un Pa-pa-papa"). Dans la salle, les trois jeunes hommes (Randy, son pote et son cousin) sont sous le charme. Pendant qu'elle danse en levant la jambe au bord de la scène, Randy est totalement ébloui. Ses amis lui disent que la mère de Peggy est aussi dans la revue. Pendant la chanson, les autres chanteuses et danseuses rejoignent Peggy sur scène. Parmi elles, Mae Martin (Adele Jergens), la mère de Peggy. Elles sont habillées en tenue de baby-doll, telles des nounous tenant des baigneurs qu'elles font danser au sol. Quand elles ont terminé leur prestation et sortent de scène, Randy applaudit énergiquement, les yeux pleins d'étoiles. 

On stage, wearing a long black sequined dress, Peggy Martin (Marilyn Monroe) dances and sings "Every Baby Needs a Da-da-daddy". In the audience, the three young men (Randy, his friend and his cousin) are under the spell. While she dances, raising her leg at the edge of the stage, Randy is totally dazzled. Her friends tell him that Peggy's mother is also in the show. During the song, the other singers and dancers join Peggy on stage. Among them, Mae Martin (Adele Jergens), Peggy's mother. They are dressed in baby-doll outfits, like nannies holding bathers that they make dance on the ground. When they have finished their performance and leave the stage, Randy applauds vigorously, his eyes full of stars.

Mae Martin (Adele Jergens) entre dans la loge de sa fille Peggy Martin (Marilyn Monroe) lui demandant si elle a besoin d'elle pour se préparer. Puis le portier M. Craig (Paul E Burns) apporte un paquet cadeau à Peggy: il s'agit d'une orchidée emballée dans un paquet transparent et accompagné d'une carte où il y est inscrit: "Merci pour la plus agréable des soirées." Mae demande à Peggy de qui cela provient, mais Peggy ne lit aucun nom sur la carte. Mae trouve cela étrange et déduit que cela ne doit pas provenir de quelqu'un de sérieux, comme un homme marié.

Mae Martin (Adele Jergens) walks into her daughter Peggy Martin's (Marilyn Monroe) dressing room asking her if she needs her to get ready. Then the doorman Mr. Craig (Paul E Burns) brings Peggy a gift package: it's an orchid wrapped in a transparent packet and accompanied by a card that reads: "Thank you for the most enjoyable evening." Mae asks Peggy who it's from, but Peggy doesn't read any names on the card. Mae finds this strange and deduces that it must not be from someone serious, like a married man.

Mae Martin (Adele Jergens) entre dans la loge de sa fille Peggy pour lui apporter une énième orchidée emballée dans un paquet cadeau transparent. Peggy étant occupée, Mae lui pose le paquet sur la table.
Quand Peggy Martin (Marilyn Monroe) découvre le paquet, Mae arrive en lui demandant s'il n'y a toujours pas de nom signé, mais Peggy lui répond que non, et qu'elle aimerait savoir qui est cet admirateur secret. Mae sort en lui disant qu'elle va faire du shopping. Seule, Peggy fait défiler l'ensemble des cartes reçues avec les orchidées: "A une charmante jeune femme", "A une très belle femme", "J'adorerais vous rencontrer", "Merci, pour l'agréable soirée", et l'enveloppe portant l'adresse de "Miss Peggy Martin, Rome Theatre" comporte le cachet de la boutique de la fleuriste "Mimi".

Mae Martin (Adele Jergens) enters her daughter Peggy's dressing room to bring her yet another orchid wrapped in a transparent gift box. Peggy being busy, Mae puts the package on the table for her.
When Peggy Martin (Marilyn Monroe) discovers the package, Mae arrives asking her if there is still no signed name, but Peggy replies no, but she would like to know who this secret admirer is. Mae walks out telling her she's going shopping. Alone, Peggy scrolls through all the cards received with the orchids: "To a charming young lady", "To a very beautiful lady", "Would love to meet you", "Thanks, for a lovely evening", and the envelope bearing the address of "Miss Peggy Martin, Rome Theatre" with the stamp of the florist's shop "Mimi".
