  Joe DiMaggio et Lefty O'Doul ont quitté Tokyo et sont arrivés à Kawana dans la matinée du vendredi 05 février; et Marilyn Monroe, accompagnée de la critique de cinéma japonaise Kazuko Komori (cf photo ci-contre), connue sous le nom de "la Tante de Komori" et qui connait bien le milieu Hollywoodien, ont quitté Tokyo en train et sont arrivées à Kawana plus tard dans la journée.
A peine arrivée à l'hôtel de Kawana, Marilyn va rester au lit, car elle souffre toujours de maux de ventre. Joe DiMaggio dit à la presse que son état de santé est du à l'excitation du voyage et à des tensions nerveuses. Kazuko Komori passera aussi la nuit dans le même hôtel.

Pour le dîner, Marilyn a commandé un steak d'agneau fin et sec, de la salade et du thé au citron sucré.
Les jours suivants, elle se fera notamment livrer, par le service en chambre, une omelette de riz: elle aime tellement ce plat, qu'elle en commandera à deux reprises pendant son séjour. L'omelette de riz est toujours aujourd'hui proposé à la carte de menu du restaurant.

Kawana se situe sur la péninsule d'Izu, dans la ville d'Ito, et appartient à la préfecture de Shizuoka.
Ils logent tous au grand complexe hôtelier luxueux de Kawana, entouré d'un immense terrain de golf et où se trouve une grande piscine. Marilyn, Joe et Lefty resteront trois jours à Kawana, passant les deux nuits à l'hôtel Kawana; Marilyn et Joe sont dans la chambre n°316.
Il semble qu'ils aient tous passé le week-end à se reposer et à profiter du cadre de vie: ils ont joué au billard, se sont détendus dans les fauteuils rembourés devant les cheminées Art Déco de l'hôtel, ont dîné dans le restaurant de l'hôtel aux poutres apparentes sous les plafonds, et ont pu ainsi bénéficier d'un peu d'intimité, loin de la foule et de l'agitation médiatique qui les secoue depuis leur arrivée au Japon.

Joe Di Maggio and Lefty O'Doul left Tokyo and arrived in Kawana on the morning of Friday February 5; and Marilyn Monroe, accompanied by Japanese film critic Kazuko Komori (see photo), known as "Komori's Aunt" and who knows the Hollywood scene well, left Tokyo by train and arrived in Kawana later in the day.
Barely arriving at Kawana's hotel, Marilyn goes to stay in bed, because she still suffers from stomach aches. Joe DiMaggio told the press that her state of health was due to the excitement of the trip and nervous tension. Kazuko Komori will also spend the night in the same hotel.

For dinner, Marilyn ordered a thin, dry lamb steak, salad and sweet lemon tea. The following days, she will have a rice omelet delivered by room service: she likes this dish so much that she will order it twice during her stay. The rice omelette is still offered on the restaurant's menu today.

Kawana is located on the Izu Peninsula, Ito City, and belongs to Shizuoka Prefecture.
They all stay at the large luxurious Kawana hotel, surrounded by a huge golf course and where there is a large swimming pool. Marilyn, Joe and Lefty will stay in Kawana for three days, spending both nights at the Kawana Hotel; Marilyn and Joe are in the room n°316.
It seems that they all spent the weekend relaxing and enjoying the surroundings: they played billiards, relaxed in the upholstered armchairs in front of the hotel's Art Deco fireplaces, dined in the hotel restaurant with exposed beams under the ceilings, and were thus able to benefit from a little privacy, far from the crowds and the media agitation that has shaken them since their arrival in Japan.

Joe DiMaggio et Lefty O'Doul profitent de l'immense terrain de golf attenant à l'hôtel pour aller jouer au golf, qui est l'une de leur grande passion, avec M. Takeda, président de Hochi Shimbun, et M. Takashi Shoriki du Oji Paper, le fils aîné de M. Matsutarô Yomiuri Shôriki.
Mais pas Marilyn Monroe qui est gênée dans ses mouvements par son pouce cassé (elle porte toujours son attelle). Par ailleurs, elle se sent toujours fatiguée et malade: en plus de ses douleurs abdominales et de la fatigue et du stress cumulés, les diverses injections de vaccins pour sa prochaine tournée en Corée nuisent à son rétablissement et la rendent nauséeuse et léthargique. Elle serait ainsi donc restée à l'hôtel pour se reposer.
Après le dîner, Joe et Lefty jouent au billard.

Jean O'Doul, la femme de Lefty O'Doul a pris l'avion de San Francisco le 04 février en destination d'Honolulu, Hawaï, où elle est arrivée la nuit du 04 février. Elle prend ensuite un avion de la Pan Am pour venir au Japon: elle arrive à Tokyo en fin d'après-midi (vers 17h00). Elle passe la nuit à l'hôtel Imperial de Tokyo.
A Honolulu, elle a téléphoné à un animateur radio, Joe Rose, pour lui confirmer que sa venue au Japon est dans le but d'accompagner Marilyn pour sa tournée en Corée et dont l'organisation se précise: les dates sont du 16 au 19 février, avec au moins deux shows par jour; il est déjà prévu que Marilyn chante aux soldats le titre "Somebody Loves Me", que le pianiste qui l'accompagnera sera le Caporal Al Guastefeste, âgé de 21 ans et originaire de Long Island, avec la troupe de musiciens "Anything Goes".

In Honolulu, she called a radio presenter, Joe Rose, to confirm that her coming to Japan is to accompany Marilyn for her tour in Korea and whose organization is becoming clearer: the dates are from the 16th to the 19th February, with at least two shows per day; It is already planned that Marilyn will sing to the soldiers the title "Somebody Loves Me", that the pianist who will accompany her will be Corporal Al Guastefeste, aged 21 and originally from Long Island, with the troupe of musicians "Anything Goes".

Puis ils partent en taxi pour se rendre dans un petit village de pêcheurs, pour lequel Joe porte un grand intérêt: il était lui-même fils de pêcheur et aurait du suivre les traces de son père si sa mère ne l'avait pas encouragé à poursuivre ses efforts dans le sport du base-ball. Marilyn et Joe traversent le village à pied, se rendent sur le petit port, et se prêtent au jeu des poses photographiques avec les habitants. Le photographe David Cicero, envoyé par le magazine militaire américain Stars and Stripes, les prend en photos, avec d'autres photographes japonais (comme Reiko Iwashita).
Au début de leur promenade, le couple bénéficie d'une certaine tranquilité et intimité. Mais au fur et à mesure de leur visite, ils rencontrent quelques locaux et notamment un jeune garçon de 10 ans qui reconnaît Joe DiMaggio, qui est une idole du base-ball au Japon. Dans cet endroit reculé du Japon, le cinéma n'est pas un produit culturel connu des habitants, tandis que le base-ball a séduit toute la jeune génération du pays. C'est la première fois depuis leur arrivée que Joe DiMaggio passe en premier plan en redevenant la star. Rapidement, plusieurs personnes du village commencent à se regrouper autour d'eux et à les suivre.

This is the first time since their arrival that Joe DiMaggio has come to the fore by becoming the star again. Quickly, several people from the village begin to gather around them and follow them.
It is said that they invited an old lady from the village to the Kawana Hotel.

Le 11 février 1954, Marilyn Monroe et Joe DiMaggio quittent Fukuoka tôt le matin pour se rendre à Hiroshima: ils vont à l'aéroport d'Itazuki (à Fukuoka) et rendent rapidement visite à la compagnie 6160th Air Base Wing, qui appartient au 68th Fighter Squadron; puis ils prennent un avion de la JAL (Japan AirLines) à 8h15 et atterissent à 9h10 à l'aéroport d'Iwakuni (le plus proche d'Hiroshima, car l'aéroport d'Yoshijima qui était à Hiroshima avait été détruit par la bombe atomique) où ils rencontrent le réalisateur O'Toole. Pendant le trajet en avion, le capitaine de bord a dévié la trajectoire pour survoler les îles de la mer intérieure de Seto et leur montrer la beauté des paysages. A leur arrivée à Iwakuni, la presse rapporte que 5000 fans les ont accueilli à l'aéroport.

Ils font ensuite 20km en voiture qui les amène à l'auberge "Issaen / Ichaen", avec des jardins typiques japonais, située à l'opposé de la rive de Miyajima à Aki, où ils prennent un copieux repas. Puis ils vont à Hiroshima.

L'air grave face à la tragédie, Marilyn soupire à plusieurs reprises.

  Puis Marilyn, Joe, Lefty O Doul et Bobby Brown visitent le centre d'études épidémiologiques et génétiques sur les survivants des bombes atomiques et sur leurs enfants [qui furent victimes du premier bombardement atomique, neuf ans auparavant, le 6 août 1945] au ABCC (Centre de Commission des victimes des bombes atomiques), remplacé en 1975 par la RERF (Fondation de recherche sur les effets des rayonnements). Le bâtiment du ABCC se trouve sur la colline du parc Hijiyama à Hiroshima.
En fait Bobby Brown connaissait le Dr Jack Lewis, interniste à l'ABCC, car il était son ancien camarade de classe à la faculté de médecine. Le Dr Robert Miller, pédiatre à l'ABCC, se souvient dans ses mémoires que le personnel avait été surpris par la visite du couple de stars et dès leur arrivée, tout le monde à l'ABCC s'était afflué pour les apercevoir.

Then Marilyn, Joe, Lefty O Doul and Bobby Brown visit the center for epidemiological and genetic studies of survivors of the atomic bombs and their children [who were victims of the first bombing atomic bomb, nine years earlier, on August 6, 1945] at the ABCC (Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission), replaced in 1975 by the RERF (Radiation Effects Research Foundation). The ABCC building is located on the hill in Hijiyama Park.

He was one of the first hematologists to use chemotherapy to treat leukemia and lymphoma.
After the war, in the early 1950s, Dr. Moloney directed from 1952 to 1954 research for the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission in Hiroshima, Japan.
He kept a journal of his research from which this photograph dated February 11, 1954 is taken.

Après cette visite, ils vont à l'hôtel auberge de l'île (Hôtel Issaen / Ichaen) où ils sont invités pour le déjeuner. Puis Marilyn et Jean O Doul restent à l'hôtel pour se reposer pendant que les hommes (Joe, Lefty et Bobby) vont coacher l'équipe de base-ball d'Hiroshima.
L'après-midi, Marilyn et Jean prennent un bateau pour aller visiter le monument du sanctuaire d'Itsukushima (le "Miyajima Shrine") et d'autres vues emblématiques de l'île dans la mer d'Inland.

Le 13 février 1954, Marilyn Monroe accompagne Joe DiMaggio au stade de baseball de Hiroshima, au Japon. Il faut rappeler que la venue de Joe DiMaggio au Japon était lié à la promotion du baseball (sport populaire au Japon). Joe, qui avait pris sa retraite, était devenu consultant. En se rendant au Japon, il faisait une pierre deux coups en y allant avec Marilyn, qu'il venait d'épouser, permettant ainsi aux jeunes mariés de s'offrir une lune de miel. Pour ce voyage, Bobby Brown (ex joueur des Yankees) et Frank O'Doul (ancien manager des Seals de San Francisco) ainsi que la femme de ce dernier Jean O'Doul, les accompagnent. Dans son emploi du temps, Joe devait participer à des manifestations publiques en offrant des cours aux équipes professionnelles de baseball japonaises, comme ici l'équipe Hiroshima Toyo Carp et celle des Hanshin Tigers.

On February 13, 1954, Marilyn Monroe accompanied Joe DiMaggio to the baseball stadium in Hiroshima, Japan. Des petites filles japonaises offrent des fleurs à Marilyn Monroe. Sur cette photographie, l'une des petites filles est Aiko Tachibana (Aiko Mizuma), petite fille de Nobuyuki Ito, président de l'équipe Carp, qui sera interviewée pour le journal Chugoku Shimbun le 01/01/2018:  "J'avais cinq ans et on me demandait parfois d'offrir des bouquets de fleurs aux visiteurs d'Hiroshima. Avec ma soeur, on offrait des fleurs au Don Cossack Choir. Je me souviens d'être montée sur scène à la salle publique d'Hiroshima pour la première fois. Cependant, malheureusement, je ne me souviens de rien de Monroe et DiMaggio. Cependant, ces photos sont dans un album de famille depuis longtemps."

Un animateur a annoncé à la radio la venue de Marilyn au stade où Joe doit venir délivrer un entraînement: cette annonce radiophonique est entendue par des milliers de japonais qui se rendent ainsi au stade. Les 5 000 spectateurs présents vont ignorer l'entraînement sur le terrain (avec Joe DiMaggio, Lefty O'Doul et Bobby Brown), n'ayant leurs yeux portés que sur Marilyn. Elle traverse le terrain avec Joe et la presse rapporte qu'elle aurait été poussée et bousculée par la foule quand elle a voulu rejoindre les gradins où est assise Jean O'Doul. Les reporters japonais présents évoqueront dans leurs colonnes un "Ouragan Monroe".
Elle va s'asseoir dans le carré VIP des gradins, va dire dans le micro « Merci beaucoup, domo arigato, domo arigato » et va rester 30 minutes. Elle repart ensuite à l'hôtel. On raconte qu'au stade, elle se serait disputé avec Joe et qu'ils se sont réconciliés le lendemain matin (Marilyn aurait été vue à l'hôtel en train de pleurer dans les bras de Joe).
  Un responsable de l'équipe 'Hiroshima Toyo Carp' qui était au courant de la visite du couple Marilyn Monroe et Joe DiMaggio à Hiroshima, parle de la venue de Marilyn au stade (extrait du livre « Hiroshima Carp Folktales Behind the Scenes : I Love the Carp » de Megumi Nishimoto):
"Monroe s'est assise à la longue table de diffusion pour regarder son mari, DiMaggio, qui entraînait, derrière le filet arrière. Hideyuki Watanabe, un responsable de l'équipe Carp, était assis sur le siège de diffusion. Lors d'une journée de match typique, il commence par les poignées de main et est en charge du système de sonorisation pendant le match. Il y avait des rumeurs selon lesquelles Monroe viendrait ce jour-là, et même s'il s'agissait d'un entraînement, il y avait environ 3 000 fans présents, il y avait une retransmissions dans la salle. Au bout d'un moment, Monroe se leva de son siège, mais Watanabe s'assit à côté d'elle et respira le même air pendant quelques minutes, plongé dans une émotion qui ne peut être décrite avec des mots. Après cela, lors du match entre la première équipe et la deuxième équipe, la voix d'annonce de Watanabe était inhabituellement douce, claire et limpide.

A presenter announced on the radio the arrival of Marilyn at the stadium where Joe is to come and deliver training: this radio announcement is heard by thousands of Japanese who go to the stadium. The 5,000 spectators present will ignore the training on the field (with Joe DiMaggio, Lefty O'Doul and Bobby Brown), having their eyes focused only on Marilyn. She crosses the field with Joe and the press reports that she was pushed and jostled by the crowd when she wanted to reach the stands where Jean O'Doul was sitting. The Japanese reporters present will write in their columns of a “Hurricane Monroe”.
She will sit in the VIP section of the stands, will say into the microphone “Thank you very much, domo arigato, domo arigato" and will stay for 30 minutes. She then goes back to the hotel. It is said that at the stadium, she had an argument with Joe and that they reconciled the next morning (Marilyn was seen at the hotel crying in Joe's arms).
A manager of the 'Hiroshima Toyo Carp' team who was aware of the visit of the couple Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio to Hiroshima, talks about Marilyn's coming to the stadium (excerpt from the book "Hiroshima Carp Folktales Behind the Scenes: I Love the Carp” by Megumi Nishimoto):
"Monroe sat at the long broadcast table to watch her husband, DiMaggio, coach behind the back net. Hideyuki Watanabe, a Carp team official, sat in the broadcast seat. During a typical game day, he starts with the handshakes and is in charge of the public address system during the game. There were rumors that Monroe was coming that day, and even though it was a practice, there were about 3,000 fans present, there was a broadcast in the hall. After a while, Monroe got up from her seat, but Watanabe sat next to her and breathed the same air for a few minutes, immersed in an emotion that cannot be described in words. After that, during the match between the first team and the second team, Watanabe's announcement voice was unusually soft, clear and crystal clear. Monroe exited the same way she entered, through the left entrance.Just as I was about to get into a taxi for the return trip, the fans I was holding back rushed over and I was almost crushed by the Kuroyama crowd."
For this event, Marilyn is wearing a Travilla dress that she borrowed from Fox Studios, which she wears in the film "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes."

Après sa tournée de quatre jours pour booster le moral des soldats stationnés en Corée, Marilyn Monroe quitte la Corée le vendredi 19 février au soir. Avec Jean O'Doul qui l'a accompagnée en Corée, elles se rendent à Kobe (dans la préfecture de Hyōgo), où elles y retrouveront leurs époux -Joe DiMaggio et Lefty O'Doul- qui doivent y délivrer des entraînements de baseball.
Cependant, elles n'ont pas pris un vol direct: elles ont transité via soit Tokyo (tel que semble l'indiquer les articles des quotidiens de la presse américaine le 20 février) ou soit à Osaka (à la base aérienne d'Itami). Il est cependant plus probable qu'elles aient pris un vol jusqu'à la base militaire d'Osaka, d'où elles étaient parties le 16 février, et où Marilyn et Jean ont pu rendre les effets vestimentaires qui leur avaient été prêtés par l'armée (l'ensemble kaki ainsi que le blouson et les rangers pour Marilyn).
On ne sait où les deux femmes ont passé la nuit: elles ont pris l'avion pour Kobe soit le vendredi soir, soit le samedi matin.

After her four-day Tour to boost the morale of the soldiers stationed in Korea, Marilyn Monroe left Korea on the evening of Friday, February 19. With Jean O'Doul who accompanied her to Korea, they go to Kobe (in Hyōgo prefecture), where they will meet their husbands - Joe DiMaggio and Lefty O'Doul - who must provide basic training baseball there.
However, they did not take a direct flight: they transited via either Tokyo (as the articles in the American press dailies on February 20 seem to indicate) or either Osaka (at the Itami air base). However, it is more likely that they took a flight to the Osaka military base, from where they left on February 16, and where Marilyn and Jean were able to return the clothing items that had been lent to them by the army (the khaki ensemble as well as the jacket and rangers for Marilyn).
It is unclear where the two women spent the night: they flew to Kobe either on Friday evening or Saturday morning.

Marilyn et Joe partagent la table avec Seizo Noda (président des chemins de fer électrique Hanshin et propriétaire de l'équipe de baseball Hanshin Tigers) et avec Matsutaro Shoriki (propriétaire du journal Yomiuri Shimbun et manager de l'équipe de baseball Yomiuri Giants). Ils rencontrent des Geishas (comme Shime Fukushima) et on offre à Marilyn quelques cadeaux.
Junko Fukushima, la nièce de la Geisha Shime Fukushima, racontera que sa tante disait de Marilyn: "C'était une très jolie femme avec des cheveux dorés et duveteux qui se balançaient."

In the evening: Marilyn Monroe, Joe DiMaggio, the couple O'Doul and Bobby Brown are invited to a "Sukiyaki" party (a Japanese dish, a sort of beef fondue), organized by the Central Baseball League (dinner given in honor of Joe) where they eat in a typical Japanese-style setting, sitting on tatami mats and eating with chopsticks and feasting on "Tempura" (fried fish fritter dish) at the "Isami" teahouse (of a Ryōtei restaurant, a type of luxurious and discreet restaurant in Japan) in Hanakumacho, a district of Kobe (at the time, a dynamic Geishas district).
Marilyn and Joe share the table with Seizo Noda (president of Hanshin Electric Railway and owner of the Hanshin Tigers baseball team) and with Matsutaro Shoriki (owner of the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper and manager of the Yomiuri Giants baseball team).
They meet Geishas (like Shime Fukushima) and Marilyn is given some gifts.
Junko Fukushima, the niece of Geisha Shime Fukushima, will recount that her aunt said of Marilyn: "She was a very pretty woman with golden, fluffy hair that swayed."

Ils resteront deux jours à Kobe, repartant le 22 février au matin, passant les deux nuits à l'hôtel Oriental de Kobe qui est le plus ancien hôtel du Japon, ayant ouvert ses portes exclusivement aux étrangers dans une ancienne colonie étrangère en 1870, peu après l'ouverture du port de Kobe.
Le journal Kobe Shimbun publiera un article sur la venue de Marilyn et Joe à Kobe, indiquant qu'une foule de 40 à 50 personnes attendaient dans le hall de l'hôtel Oriental, y compris des invités étrangers, des soldats américains et des employés de l'hôtel.

They will stay two days in Kobe, leaving on the morning of February 22, spending the two nights at the Oriental Hotel in Kobe which is the oldest hotel in Japan, having opened its doors exclusively to foreigners in a former foreign colony in 1870, shortly after the opening of the Kobe port.
The Kobe Shimbun newspaper will publish an article about Marilyn and Joe's visit to Kobe, stating that a crowd of 40 to 50 people were waiting in the lobby of the Oriental Hotel, including foreign guests, American soldiers and employees of the hotel.

 Marilyn Monroe et Joe DiMaggio avaient prévu d'aller faire du tourisme à Kyoto mais ils ont annulé la sortie: d'une part, parce que la météo était mauvaise (temps enneigé) mais aussi de par la santé de Marilyn. Après les quatre jours intenses où elle s'est produite sur scène devant des milliers de soldats américains basés en Corée, Marilyn a beaucoup de fièvre et a même contracté le début d'une pneumonie. Elle s'était en effet produite sur scène vêtue d'une fine robe à bretelles, laissant ses jambes, ses bras et épaules découvertes, alors qu'il faisait très froid (il pleuvait et parfois même neigeait - cf photo ci-contre: Marilyn chante sous une pluie verglaçante).
Marilyn se repose donc à l'hôtel Oriental de Kobe.

Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio had planned to go sightseeing in Kyoto but they canceled the outing: on the one hand, because the weather was bad (snowy weather) but also because of Marilyn's health. After the four intense days where she performed on stage in front of thousands of American soldiers based in Korea, Marilyn had a high fever and even contracted the beginnings of pneumonia. She had in fact performed on stage wearing a thin dress with straps, leaving her legs, arms and shoulders uncovered, even though it was very cold (it was raining and sometimes even snowing - see photo opposite: Marilyn sings in freezing rain).
Marilyn is therefore resting at the Oriental Hotel in Kobe.

 Marilyn Monroe, Joe DiMaggio et le couple O'Doul se rendent à Itami, une base aérienne américaine d'Osaka (qui est aujourd'hui l'aéroport international d'Osaka) pour prendre un avion de la JAL (Japan AirLines) pour se rendre à Tokyo.
Leur arrivée à Haneda, l'aéroport international de Tokyo, s'est effectuée dans une ambiance très calme, à l'opposé du tumulte qu'ils ont subi à leur arrivée. Les japonais étaient en fait occupés à regarder un match de combat de lutte retransmis à la télévision et notamment dans le hall de l'aéroport ! Seule une petite foule les a acceuilli sur le tarmac.

Ils se rendent à l'hôtel Imperial de Tokyo, ce même hôtel où ils ont séjourné à leur arrivée. De plus en plus fiévreuse (sa température est de 40°C et elle souffre de mal de gorge), Marilyn reste au lit pour se reposer, si bien qu'il est même question de reporter leur départ du Japon.
Il est possible que le praticien et maître de Shiatsu, M. Tokujiro Namikoshi, qui a soulagé les douleurs que Marilyn avait au ventre au début de son séjour au Japon (à Tokyo, les rendez-vous ont toujours eu lieu à l'hôtel Imperial) soit à nouveau intervenu pour la soigner (puisqu'il sera intervenu en totalité à sept reprises).
Dans la soirée, Joe DiMaggio déclare que "Sa température a un peu baissé ce soir mais elle ne se sent toujours pas bien et nous devrons attendre que le médecin la voie demain matin avant de savoir si nous pouvons rentrer chez nous demain."

Meanwhile Marilyn has slimmed down to the point where her chassis never looked better, and anyone who thinks she is unhappy about Arthur Miller’s recent wedding just doesn’t know her. She was alerted well in advance of the nuptials, and couldn’t care less.

Marilyn Monroe ended a Mexico City vacation yesterday returning to Hollywood in dark glasses, mink coat, tan slacks and a gaily coloured blouse. The movie queen wore little or no makeup when she stepped from the plane at Los Angeles International Airport. It wasn't established immediately how long she'll remain in the film capital or whether she'll be working. She told newsmen she may make a movie, "Something's Got to Give," but she wasn't sure. "It's supposed to be a comedy," she added. Asked about boy friends, she was especially vague.
She said she didn't know whether ex-husband Joe Dimaggio planned to visit her. She denied knowledge, in fact, of the baseball celebrity's whereabouts.
