Cet épisode de l'émission du "Lux Radio Theatre" est diffusé le 24 février 1947 sur les ondes de la CBS et enregistrée à Hollywood. Ce programme radiophonique avait la particularité de diffuser des adaptations radio de scènes de pièces de théâtre ou de films, avec la participation d'acteurs de cinéma, sur scène, devant un public. Entre les représentations scéniques, d'autres invités sont interviewés, comme c'est le cas ici de Marilyn. Chacun des intervenants est rémunéré. L'émission a un tel succès qu'elle durera près de 20 ans (entre 1934 et 1955); les studios sont basés à New York entre 1934 et 1936 puis prennent ensuite place à Hollywood jusqu'en 1955 du 1615 North Vine Street, dans les studios de CBS Radio Playhouse.
Cette émission du 24 février 1947 met en scène l'actrice Paulette Goddard qui rejoue des scènes de son film Kitty sorti en 1945.

This episode of the "Lux Radio Theater" program was broadcast on February 24, 1947 on CBS and recorded in Hollywood. This radio program has the particularity of broadcasting radio adaptations of scenes from plays or films, with the participation of film actors, on stage, in front of an audience. Between the stage performances, other guests are interviewed, as is the case here with Marilyn. Each of the contributors is paid. The show was so successful that it would last almost 20 years (between 1934 and 1955); the studios are based in New York between 1934 and 1936 then take place in Hollywood until 1955 at 1615 North Vine Street, in the studios of CBS Radio Playhouse.
This issue of February 24, 1947 also features actress Paulette Goddard who reenacts scenes from her film Kitty released in 1945.

   C'est William Keighley (photo ci-contre), l'un des présentateurs des émissions "Lux Radio Theatre" qui interviewe ici Marilyn Monroe: il la présente comme la "blonde aux yeux bleus" ayant été découverte par l'armée avant de signer un contrat chez la 20th Century Fox après avoir passé des essais en couleur. Marilyn lui répond qu'elle a été "chanceuse" et explique que les essais passés étaient destinés pour le film "The Shocking Miss Pilgrim" (sorti en salle le 4 janvier 1947 aux USA) où elle y a porté un des vêtements de Betty Grable dans le film et en détaillant par la suite les techniques modernes de pellicule de l'industrie cinématographique.
Marilyn est payée 100 Dollars pour participer à ce show radio et a signé le contrat le 19 février 1947.

It is William Keighley (picture opposite), one of the presenters and producers-host of the "Lux Radio Theatre" shows who interviews Marilyn Monroe here: he presents her as the "blue-eyed blonde" who was discovered by the army before signing a contract with the 20th Century Fox after passing color screen test. Marilyn replies that she was "lucky" and explains that the screen tests were intended for the film "The Shocking Miss Pilgrim" (released on US screens on January 4, 1947) where she wore one of Betty Grable's costumes in the movie and detailing later the modern film techniques of the Film Industry.
Marilyn is paid 100 Dollars to participate in this radio show and signed the contract on February 19, 1947.

Au départ engagée pour jouer le rôle d'une secrétaire dans le film "Dangerous Years" pour une durée d'une semaine de tournage, Marilyn Monroe joue finalement le rôle d'une serveuse (Evie) dont le tournage ne nécessite qu'une journée, celle du 30 juillet 1947. Les studios de la 20th Century Fox passent un contrat avec la production de Sol M. Wurtzel pour prêter les services de Marilyn; Sol M Wurtzel étant en charge de la production du film. Ayant signé un contrat qui lui prévoit de verser 125 Dollars pour une semaine, la guarantie du contrat lui verse la somme le 4 août 1947. 

Initially hired to play the role of a secretary in the film "Dangerous Years" for a week of filming, Marilyn Monroe finally plays the role of a waitress (Evie) whose filming only requires one day, that of July 30, 1947. The 20th Century Fox studios signs a contract with the production of Sol M. Wurtzel to lend the services of Marilyn; Sol M Wurtzel being in charge of the production of the film. Having signed a contract which provides for her to pay 125 Dollars for one week, the guarantee of the contract pays her the sum on August 4, 1947.

Tel qu'on le remarque par son habillement, Jean Peters est en plein tournage du film "Capitaine de Castille", qui est d'ailleurs son premier rôle au cinéma et dans lequel elle partage la tête d'affiche avec Tyrone Power. Le tournage du film dure du 25 novembre 1946 au 4 avril 1947.

As we notice it by its clothing, Jean Peters is in filming of "Captain from Castile", which is besides her first role in the cinema and in which she shares the headliner with Tyrone Power. The filming of the film lasts from November 25, 1946 to April 4, 1947.

De son côté, Marilyn Monroe tourne en cette année 1947 son premier film pour la Fox qui se résume par deux scènes dans "Scudda Hoo! Scudda Hay!" et dont le tournage se déroule de février à juillet 1947. D'ailleurs, Jean Peters a même passé un casting pour "Scudda Hoo! Scudda Hay!" mais n'a pas été retenue, obtenant bien mieux puisqu'elle tient le premier rôle féminin dans "Capitaine de Castille".

Il est possible que la présence de Marilyn à la cantine soit liée au tournage d'un autre film (elle n'obtient que de la figuration lors de ses premiers tournages à la Fox en 1947: "The Shocking Miss Pilgrim", "You Were Meant For Me", "Green Grass of Wyoming", et dont les brèves apparitions restent impossible à identifier dans les versions finales de ces films, se retrouvant dans des scènes parmi des foules).
Ou encore sa présence n'est que fortuite, Marilyn se rendant presque quotidiennement aux studios de la Fox, en attente de pouvoir décrocher un rôle.

For her part, Marilyn Monroe is filming in that year 1947 her first film for the Fox which is summed up by two brief scenes in "Scudda Hoo! Scudda Hay!" and whose filming takes place from February to July 1947. Moreover, Jean Peters was even tested for "Scudda Hoo! Scudda Hay!" but was not retained, getting much better as she stars with the female role in "Captain from Castile."

It is possible that Marilyn's presence at the canteen is linked to the shooting of another film (she only obtains extras during her first filmings at Fox in 1947: "The Shocking Miss Pilgrim", "You Were Meant For Me", "Green Grass of Wyoming", and whose brief appearances remain unidentifiable in the final versions of these films, being in scenes among crowds).
Or again her presence is only fortuitous, Marilyn going almost daily to the Fox studios, waiting to be able to obtain a role.

Le 14 juin 1951, Marilyn Monroe et Robert Wagner jouent une scène en essai pour le film "Chérie, divorçons" dans les studios de la 20th Century Fox. Si les deux acteurs jouent tous les deux dans le film, ils ne partagent aucune scène ensemble dans le montage final.
Robert Wagner racontera dans son livre autobiographique "Pieces of my heart" publié en 2009: "Au début de ma carrière, à la Fox, j'étais impatient d'expirer et je suis devenu connu comme le "gars des essais". C'est-à-dire que je jouerais le rôle principal masculin face à n'importe quelle actrice testée pour un contrat potentiel. J'ai fait des essais avec Marilyn deux fois : une fois, lorsqu'elle a obtenu son premier contrat avec la Fox, et une autre fois en 1951, lorsque nous avons partagé la vedette dans Let's Make it Legal. Marilyn et moi n'avions pas de scènes réelles ensemble dans le film final, mais pendant notre test, elle semblait légèrement nerveuse."

On June 14, 1951, Marilyn Monroe and Robert Wagner play a test screen scene for the film "Let's Make It Legal" in the 20th Century Fox Studios. While the two actors both star in the film, they do not share any scenes together in the final cut.
Robert Wagner will tell in his autobiographical book "Pieces of my heart" published in 2009: "Early in my time, at Fox I was eager for expire and became known as the "test boy". That is, I would play the male lead opposite any actress being screen-tested for a potential contract. I tested with Marilyn twice: once, when she first got her contract at Fox, and another time in 1951, when we co-starred in Let's Make it Legal. Marilyn and I had no actual scenes together in the final film, but durong our test, she seemed slightly nervous."

Cette longue robe de mousseline noire de soirée au buste seyant, aux manches et à la poitrine transparentes, à la taille haute, et à la jupe pailletée et ouverte jusqu'en haut des jambes est une création de Jean-Louis Berthault, surnommé Jean Louis.
Ce n'est pas une tenue de la garde robe personnelle de Marilyn; la robe appartient au département costume des studios de la Columbia.

This long black muslin evening dress with a flattering bust, transparent sleeves and chest, high waist, and sequined skirt open to the top of the legs is a creation of Jean-Louis Berthault, nicknamed Jean Louis.
It's not an outfit from Marilyn's personal wardrobe; the dress belongs to the costume department of Columbia studios.

Marilyn Monroe porte la robe dans le film de la Columbia Ladies of the Chorus (Les Reines du Music-Hall), tourné en mai/juin 1948, dans une scène de chant et de danse sur la chanson "Every Baby Needs a Da-da-daddy". Elle porte cette robe sexy avec des bas résilles noirs, qui ajoutent un effet de sensualité burlesque.
Tous les costumes des scènes de danse du film sont des créations de Jean Louis. Cependant, il ne les a pas créé pour Marilyn -ni pour le film- mais les vêtements ont été empruntés dans le département costumes de la Columbia, pour qui Jean Louis travaillait.

Marilyn Monroe wears the dress in the Columbia film Ladies of the Chorus, shot in May/June 1948, in a singing and dancing scene to the song "Every Baby Needs a Da-Da -Daddy". She wears this sexy dress with black fishnet stockings, which add a burlesque sensuality effect.
All the costumes for the dance scenes in the film are creations by Jean Louis. However, he did not create them for Marilyn -nor for the film- but the clothes were borrowed from the costume department of Columbia, for which Jean Louis worked.

Il est étonnant de découvrir qu'un mois avant de tourner le film pour la Columbia, Marilyn avait emprunté la robe aux studios pour une représentation théâtrale du 16 au 19 mars 1948 pour le compte de leur concurrent - la Twentieth Century Fox-  dans un showcase au "Fox Studio Club Little Theater".

It is surprising to discover that a month before shooting the film for Columbia, Marilyn had borrowed the dress from the studios for a theatrical performance from March 16 to 19 in 1948 for their competitor - Twentieth Century Fox - in a showcase at the Fox Studio Club Little Theater.

Venant de signer son premier contrat avec la 20th Century Fox (fin août 1946), le photographe Earl Theisen (qui travaillait pour le magazine américain Look) est engagé pour effectuer des photographies officielles de Marilyn Monroe pour le studio. C'est au cours de l'année 1947, dans un terrain de Los Angeles, qu'a lieu la séance. Aucune photographie ne sera cependant publiée. Elles ne seront dévoilées au public qu'en 2012, grâce à la fille du photographe, Ines, qui les a retrouvées et transmises à l'agence Getty.

Il s'agit de la première séance photos entre Earl Theisen et Marilyn; le photographe racontera:
"Je me souviens d'une séance que j'ai fait avec Marilyn, en 1946 ou 1947. Je suis allée la chercher chez elle où j'ai vu un gros livre sur l'anatomie humaine ouvert et tout annoté, et j'ai demandé: « Quelle était l'idée ? » et elle a dit: « J'étudie la structure osseuse du corps. Votre corps réagit en fonction de vos os. Le saviez-vous ? »
Tout ce qu'elle fait est calculé et se base sur une connaissance scientifique du corps humain, plus que quiconque, à l'exception des médecins. Elle est construite comme une machine à sexe. Elle peut l'allumer et l'éteindre. Je l'ai vue mettre la machine sexuelle en marche. Je vais me concentrer sur elle, me préparer à appuyer sur le déclencheur de l'appareil, puis en regardant dans le viseur, je peux réellement voir le sexe s'épanouir, comme s'il s'agissait d'une fleur. Si je suis pressé et que je veux déclencher trop vite, elle dira: « Earl, tu as appuyé trop vite. Ce ne sera pas bon. Continuons et finissons-en.» Vous voyez, il lui faut du temps pour créer ce truc sexuel. Et ne laissez personne vous dire que c'est dans ses hanches ou dans sa poitrine. Je vais vous dire où il se trouve. C'est dans sa tête. C'est là que c'est."

Having just signed her first contract with 20th Century Fox (at the end of August 1946), the photographer Earl Theisen (who worked for the American magazine Look) is hired to take official photographs of Marilyn Monroe for the studio. It is during the year 1947, in a field of Los Angeles, that the shooting takes place. However, no one og these photographs will be published. They will not be unveiled to the public until 2012, thanks to the photographer's daughter, Ines, who found them and sent them to the Getty agency.

This is the first photo shoot between Earl Theisen and Marilyn; the photographer will tell:
"I remember a series I shot with Marilyn, oh back in 1946 or 1947. I picked her up at her place and I saw a big book on the human anatomy open and all marked up, and I said, 'What was the idea,' and she said, 'I'm studying the bone structure of the body. Your body does what your bones do. Did you know that?'
Anything she does is calculated and is based on a more scientific knowledge of the human body than anybody has except doctors. She's built kind of like a sex machine. She can turn it on and off. I've seen her turn the sex machine into operation. I'll focus on her, get ready to shoot, and then looking in the finder, I can actually see the sex blossoming out, like it was a flower. If I'm in a hurry and want to shoot too quickly, she'll say, 'Earl, you shot it too quick. It won't be right. Let's do it over.' You see, it takes time for her to create this sex thing. And don't let anybody tell you it's in her hips or in her bosom. I'll tell you where it's located. It's in her mind. That's where it is."
